2013 TV Thread
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Jun 24, 2013 -> 08:48 AM) Great finale for Mad Men. Is next season the last one? I think I remember reading that it was. I liked the finale as well. I've wondered how long it would take the other partners to grow tired of Don's antics. One question I had, though: Did I miss something about Peter going to California?

Dunn?
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Jun 21, 2013 -> 10:17 AM) No one's ragging on Konerko because he's a had a fantastic and fairly consistent career of like 15 years and he just sucks now because he's 37, always injured, and generally cooked. His career is ending, that's all. Dunn is like 31 and signed a huge deal with us only to immediately suck. Way different. Well, Dunn is 33, and he's never been as consistent as Konerko. Thankfully he's only signed for one more year. Unless he's traded (ha!), he'll be around next year, frustrating us while somehow hitting 30+ HRs. Right now, though, he's not one of the biggest problems on this team.

Who does Hawk hate?
Hawk's right about the no accountability issue. And he hit the nail on the head with the statement, "this has been horses*** baseball." As far as who he doesn't like, it's hard to tell. I don't think he cares much for Keppinger, Flowers, and maybe De Aza. He loves Konerko and Beckham, and I think he likes Dunn.

Who are our trading partners?
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 20, 2013 -> 08:50 AM) Keep in mind, it's a very safe assumption that the White Sox will get zero of the exciting players people are looking at. Sigh...I know, but it's nice to dream. I certainly hope something good will come out of this horrendous season.
-
Who are our trading partners?
I'm actually looking forward to seeing what the Sox can get. I've never really looked at other teams' prospects because the Sox are typically buyers (or at least standing pat) at the deadline. But there are some really exciting prospects out there that would be great for the Sox.
-
Who are our trading partners?
Alen Hanson and Alex Dickerson from the Pirates would be a couple nice additions, especially if Alexei were to be traded. Dickerson could be that elusive left-handed bat the Sox need, and he could be the first baseman of the future. Both of these guys are pretty highly ranked in their system, though. It could be very difficult to pry them away.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 14, 2013 -> 02:24 PM) I never once said DFA the guy. He simply sucks. I just wanted to point that out because at the time of that thread there was a lot of talk about him not sucking. Here's the last thing I'll say about it, and then we'll agree to disagree. You're saying he sucks as if he has no chance to ever be a good baseball player and add value to a team. His hitting has slumped, and time will only tell if he will start hitting better and balance out as at least an okay offensive piece. Defensively, he's very good...and that's something the Sox haven't had for a while at 3rd base. He's young, and this is his first full season at the MLB level. He's not a player we need to worry about right now as these team has a slew of problems. He may end up sucking and be a bust, but I'm willing to give him the time, especially considering the alternatives.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Jun 14, 2013 -> 12:50 PM) I'm just giving you s*** haha. Isn't this Gillaspie's first season on the mlb level? He's good with the glove so far. Roll the dice and see if he's gets better. He probably has more jacks than Morel did when he first came up. I think people are more upset with the hyperbole than anything else. =) This was my point, but if Steve says he sucks then he must suck. DFA him tonight, and let's roll with Keppinger and his lackluster defense and worst offensive production.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 14, 2013 -> 11:49 AM) The entire roster is loaded with bad players. My entire point about Gillaspie is that he's garbage, yet people speak of him fondly. I suppose he's spoken of fondly because he's not one of the biggest problems on this team. As I said, he's not great by any means. But he's not garbage. However, I'll just drop that argument with you. I'm going to worry about the bigger problems.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jun 14, 2013 -> 11:16 AM) If by "cool" you mean "accurate", then you'd be correct. Unless, of course, you've redefined an 83 OPS+ as "doing ok". The guy's pitiful. He's not great, I'll agree there. But he's not pitiful. There are plenty of other players on this team that are more pitiful. I'm a lot more concerned about Dunn, Konerko, Keppinger, and the catcher position. Gillaspie was a bench guy, then he was a starter and played pretty well, then went to a platoon with Keppinger where he started slipping. Who knows if he'll be good enough to be the Sox 3rd baseman of the future. Defensively he's very good. He still needs to work on his offense, and we need more time to decide whether or not he's pitiful.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jun 14, 2013 -> 09:28 AM) Steve will not let this Gillaspie stuff go because Conor Gillaspie is a serial cereal pisser. That and it's not cool to say Gillaspie's actually doing okay. You gotta go against the grain and say he sucks...because that's cool.

You're Hahn, who are you looking to trade first?
Realistically, does any team take a look at Dunn? If he continues to hit well and gets his average up to .200, along with 25+ HRs by the deadline it's possible I guess. But it would be a salary dump for next year plus I'm sure the Sox would have to send some money. Who knows though?

White Sox draft thread: Day Two
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 7, 2013 -> 02:04 PM) Please everyone else listen to this statement, I was enjoying the information in the thread. I second this. This thread was, for a while, a good read. Let's get it back on track.

AND THAT'S A WHITE SOX WINNER!!!
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 6, 2013 -> 07:09 AM) http://espn.go.com/blog/sweetspot/post/_/i...e-love-baseball ESPN Cover Story....SOX/M's Remind Us Why We Love Baseball Good article, but if the Sox end up being sellers, there's more here than Rios to trade. I liked the tirade over what Selig likes more. Hit the nail on the head there.

Roster Changes Coming?
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 4, 2013 -> 09:01 AM) And right now, there's no reason to make a deal unless someone offers the moon. That's just how the game is played. I agree. And I don't imagine anyone is going to offer the moon quite yet.

Roster Changes Coming?
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 4, 2013 -> 08:23 AM) You don't make trades on June 10th unless you have a really good deal on the table. But you definitely are listening. And I imagine Hahn's phone is ringing with folks asking about the likes of Peavy, Rios, and maybe a few bullpen arms.

Roster Changes Coming?
QUOTE (Marty34 @ Jun 4, 2013 -> 07:42 AM) No way this team avoids 90 losses. I disagree. It's possible but not likely that they lose 90 games. They were at .500 before this horrendous losing streak started. This streak won't last, and more than likely they'll have a winning streak or two of 5+ games. I don't think this team will compete for the division, but you never know. Detroit doesn't want to run away with it yet. I imagine if nothing major happens with the roster this team will end up with about 78-80 wins.

Roster Changes Coming?
I expect a coach to be fired soon if things don't turn around. I'd like to see some roster moves, but what would said moves consist of? Trades, demotions, DFAs?

Dunn?
QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 2, 2013 -> 09:51 PM) I think your last line is completely ridiculous. If you or I made such a decision in the business world, no matter how "logical" it seemed to be at the time, we'd be so fired, so long ago. It's results that matter. Kevin Pritchard chose Oden over Durant. He did so for logical reasons. Look up all the articles before that draft and just about everybody said he had to take Oden. And it cost Pritchard his job. KW flopped in taking on Dunn. It's pretty much ruined our team cause of that huge contract and also the buzzkill he brings to the squad on a daily basis. In the real world, it would be Dunn who would be fired. Unfortunately, baseball isn't the real world. When KW signed Dunn it looked like a good deal because of Dunn's history. No one, not even Dunn himself, could have foreseen what a disaster he's been. There are plenty of bad deals made in baseball. The Dunn signing looks really bad because of his performance in 2 of the 3 years of his contract so far. Blame KW all you want, but it comes down to Dunn. He's at fault because he can't hit a baseball anymore.

Conor Gillaspie is not a good player
Someone is crabby today. I can't even take this thread seriously because of the title alone. And then the mass insult, calling anyone who likes Conor Gillaspie a Meathead. But, no one should take anything Steve says personally. As I said, he seems a bit crabby today. However, is Conor Gillaspie awesome? No. Does he suck? Absolutely not. The guy was TRADED for to fill an important spot as a left-handed hitting bench player. He has gotten a chance to play everyday due to injury. And he's done a pretty good job playing everyday. A .283 BA with 7 doubles, 1 triple, and 3 homeruns is not the definition of sucking. Oh, and he plays pretty good defense. Maybe there's a little extra love being thrown his way simply because the Sox haven't had a guy like this playing third base in quite a while. He's a pleasant surprise. If he continues to get a chance to play regularly for the rest of the season, he could still be a .260+ hitter with 10-15 HRs. I'll take that along with his good defense. Of all the problems this team has, Conor Gillaspie is not one of them. He's really one of the last offensive players I'd worry about. Conor Gillaspie doesn't suck. The only thing that sucks here is this thread.

2013 Films Thread
Watched Jack Reacher last weekend. Decent movie, but having read most of the Reacher novels, I just can't accept Tom Cruise as Reacher. However, he played the part pretty well (aside from the fact that he's about 8 inches and 90 pounds smaller than the real Reacher), and he had some good one-liners. Also caught The Impossible and Side Effects. The Impossible was great. Emotional, terrifying, good effects. Side Effects was a very good, quiet thriller.

Where is Phegley?
QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 28, 2013 -> 03:02 PM) Because selling high on Peavy and Rios is the right thing to do because it is going to be impossible to build a team around them that will win a World Series. Why? Because of money or something else? Peavy's contract is pretty team friendly, and Rios' contract actually looks okay with his performance so far. You could build around Peavy for one more year (or more if he signs another nice deal), and maybe Rios re-signs a decent deal. Not necessarily likely, but if you want to trade them for "the best possible value", what is it that you want? Starting pitching, relief pitching, a catcher, outfielders...?

Where is Phegley?
QUOTE (Marty34 @ May 28, 2013 -> 11:15 AM) Nate Jones realistic ceiling is a 6th-7th inning guy. Send him down and when he shows he can get someone out again bring him back up. He has no business on a ML roster right now. And replace him with who? Who down in the minors right now could fill his spot?
