The NBA Really Sucks
hammerhead johnson replied to Benson&Rexage's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 08:34 PM) I agree with SA/Detroit being a series of a lack of offense, not two great defensive teams. Those are the two best defensive teams in the league, what are you talking about? That reminds me of what people were saying when the Pistons played the Pacers in the Eastern Conference Finals last year. Not enough excitement. Meanwhile, I was loving every minute of it like Doug E Fresh. -
QUOTE(WilliamTell @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 07:52 AM) lol oh he better not go there. I think you'd be pleasantly surprised if you had Patterson on your team. He's a tough defensive-minded player who will break his back for you, definitely the type of guy that Sloan needs. He still has another 3+ years left. That would be an excellent pick-up for the Jazz.

His last two starts combined: 7 IP, 13 ER, 18 H, 4 BB. Yikes. Time for Brett to come waaaay back down to Earth. Cris Carpenter, on the other hand, has been sensational. His last three starts combined: 26 IP, 1 ER, 9 H, 3 BB. This is his first appearance in the Top 20, and he shot right up to #11 overall. The Sox (Buehrle, Garland, Garcia) and the Astros (Clemens, Oswalt, Pettite) have three starters apiece in the Top 15, and two starters apiece in the Top 10. That is insane. Sabathia was on the verge of breaking into the Top 20 back on June 14, but he's been absolutely terrible since then.

QUOTE(qwerty @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 08:57 PM) Balta, bigsqwert, oil can, nvxplorer, milkman, kyle23, rock raines are some of the main ones from the last month or so. It seems like there are about 50 of them. Looking at the list of people who have registered this year, there are definitely more than just two quality posters, though. I regret saying that.

QUOTE(TheBigHurt @ Jun 27, 2005 -> 05:24 PM) Hasn't happened and won't happen. I happen to be good at arguing, at least where I CAN argue. "Past statistics are not relevant to the future" I'm sure that you've won plenty of debates in your time. Hit the road, man. You're just another terrible poster from the 2005 class. How many quality posters have registered on this site since the beginning of the year, maybe two?

From 1991 to 1999, Belle averaged 39 HR, 38 2B, and 122 RBI per season. He'll get in at some point.

QUOTE(qwerty @ Jun 26, 2005 -> 05:20 PM) Thomas was hitting .302 on june 12th of last year then he got hurt on june 15th against florida. While he was playing through his injury he lost roughly .30 points on his batting average. I don't think it is out of the question that is he was healthy he would have hit right around three hundred with fourty plues homers. You think that Steve might have been sleeping on this information due to the fact that he just became a White Sox fan last month? I'm just kidding, Steve. -

QUOTE(qwerty @ Jun 25, 2005 -> 08:06 PM) He won't be coming here but i doubt he stays with the cavs unless they get things turned around a hurry. Sure it's his home town and all but winning and championships> being at home on a s***ty team. What they do this year will end oup telling their future for years to come. I know they are looking at sarunas jasikevicius, he would be huge for them. I think that the Cavs are f***ed in the long term. They play in the wrong division. You have two perennial championship threats in Detroit and Indiana, a team on the rise in Chicago, and a futures team in Milwaukee. I can't see the Cavs making any progress...they are missing so many pieces and Ilgauskas can't possibly last much longer. I know jack s*** about Sarunas Jasikevicius...what position does he play? -

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jun 25, 2005 -> 05:15 PM) I would say Amare's defense is average at best. He even admitted it when they got eliminated and said that he'll make sure he improves his defensive play. That's what I love about him. He has fire and determination to improve. Next year I expect him to make a couple of steps into being a defensive beast. What about when he's playing the 4 and he's banging with prototypical PFs like Brand, Martin, etc? He played out of position all year. There is a very, very thin line between average and above average, though. It's hard to make a definitive argument, either way. I'll go with above average on the strength of his incredible athleticism, energy, and more importantly, the fact that he's a mean, balls-out motherf***er. He can't range the middle due to his lack of awareness, that has definitely been established. -
Happy Birthday to one hell of a poster.

QUOTE(Jake @ Jun 25, 2005 -> 04:24 AM) Chandler - This guy is terrible on offense. Sure, he puts down a monster dunk now and then, but the guy plays like he's 6'6" on offense. He goes to the hole like a lot of guards would against PF's and C's, trying to avoid contact and being afraid to attack (like fading away and throwing up runners) and he can't score like a guard well. Get used to it, because he can't dribble for s***. He doesn't play 6'6, I don't understand that portion of your analysis. He plays like a guy who can't dribble and has zero post moves. Those runners have no fluidity to them. He's just goofy on the offensive end, and there is no upside. He can provide maybe 12 PPG off of offensive boards, tips, and free throws. That is plenty, considering his value to the team from a defensive/rebounding perspective. Always remember that scorers come a dime a dozen, and elite defenders in a 30 team league are precious commodities. The irony of the situation is that you spend so much less money on defense. Look at Ben Wallace, he's making 6.5 million per year. That's less (in some cases waaaay less) than what Jamal Crawford, Allan Houston, Shannon Anderson, Quentin Richardson, Anfernee Hardaway, Tim Thomas, and Stephon Marbury make per year, and that's only the Knicks. -

QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Jun 25, 2005 -> 04:40 AM) Amare an above average defender? I'm surprised by that one. The guy doesn't know where he needs to be most of the time and compensates with his incredible athleticism. Take a look at what the other team's top post players did against him in the playoffs. Gasol hit 28 twice, Dirk had 34 once and 28 twice, and Duncan had 28, 30, 33, and 31 in their wins. All of those guys put up good numbers and shot high percentages, and that didn't just happen in the playoffs. Amare has the athletic ability to be a stud and putting another real post defender in there istead of Marion will help, but he's nowhere near being a top post defender right now. Honestly, for a guy with his size and athleticism, his shot blocking ability is a disappointment. I agree, he's nowhere near a top post defender, but I'd say he's definitely above average out of the 4 against beefy, prototypical PFs. He can bang a little bit and alter some shots. Finesse guys out of the 4 are going to give him problems (Dirk, Gasol). He is clearly overmatched if he's going heads up with a damn near 7'0 freak like Duncan or Garnett. But otherwise, I like his defense out of the 4, primarily due to the fact that he's a vicious motherf***er with incredible athleticism (as you stated). Also, Stoudemire played C for the bulk of the regular season and the playoffs, so he wouldn't be guarding Dirk out on the perimiter, or Gasol from a dozen feet out. He'd be on Erik Dampier, Lorenzen Wright, etc, and helping out when those PFs would make their moves in the paint. Amare's actual height is 6'8, and he doesn't have Ben Wallace type awareness or strength, so he's clearly not cut out to be a ranger in the middle. They had to find a way to get Johnson and Richardson out on the court at the same time. And back to Joe Johnson -- I've been thinking about this all day, and how a player can just be a stroke over the first several years of his career with a total lack of focus and desire when it comes to guarding people, and then all of a sudden emerge as a quality defender, an energy guy. I even broke out all of my old basketball mags looking for scouting reports just to make sure that I wasn't going crazy. I came across the precise phrase weak defender. What has changed? Contract year? Seriously, I'm baffled. -

QUOTE(qwerty @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 09:06 PM) He didn't even average a steal per game in nearly 40 minutes per game. He is definitely not a gambler like hughes, he was always in front of who he was defending last year. He is an athletic freak, he can play the full 48 games in a row if you ask him to and that is with him going full speed ahead. I mean he led a pedal to the medal team in minutes per game last year, that says something to me. What was really impressive last year is his three point shooting, nearly at 48%. His second half steals numbers are pretty crazy, though. He had 23 in March, but only 9 in December. That's the primary reason why I compared him to Larry Hughes...I've seen him get burnt quite a few times on botched steal attempts, especially in the second half this past year. When I think of the Phoenix mid-range defense from 04/05, I think of swiss cheese (less holes than Washington, of course). Stoudemire, Marion, and Richardson are all, at the very least, above average defensive players. To me, Nash and Johnson were the primary holes on the defensive end, not even bringing up secondary factors like guys playing out of position. -

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 09:04 PM) Yep. Saying he is weak defensively was way off, in my opinion. I'd have classified him as weak coming into this year. It is a fact that he's taken a s*** on the defensive end in previous years. If you can find any comprehensive scouting reports from the past few years, they will reveal as much. I don't see how things can just drastically change overnight, but you know, whatever. -

QUOTE(qwerty @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 08:45 PM) I do know that alot of people are impressed with his defense. Several teams want him because of both his scoring and defensive abilities because they are lacking defense in that position. Either way he is gonna geta a nearly max contract this summer. His steals numbers are impressive, although, like Larry Hughes, he takes way too many chances and just doesn't seem to want to play defense at times. I think he's incapable of containing a Top 10 scoring threat out of the SG or SF slot even when he's playing his best possible defensive game. I'm sure that there have been exceptions, I'm just going on what I've seen. -

QUOTE(qwerty @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 08:28 PM) Joe defensive is pretty damn good defensively. Are you thinking of linton johnson? Really? From what I've seen of him throughout his career, he's gotten torched an awful lot. He doesn't have that rep either (unless I've been sleeping and he put in more effort on the defensive end this year). Maybe I went too far in calling him a weak defensive player, but he doesn't really do much for me. -

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 24, 2005 -> 01:05 AM) Yet someone suggested to let him go and pick up raja bell...Maybe their NBA package didn't include Suns games... Joe Johnson is clearly a good player, and suggesting that they let him go and pick up raja bell when they've been trying to figure out how to re-sign him since practically before this season sounds ridiculous... You won't get an argument out of me as far as his scoring potential is concerned, but Johnson is a weak defensive player who tends to disappear at times. I see guys like that all over the league. He's not worth the money, IMO. -

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 06:56 PM) Let me put it this way...Curry is not a rebounder, and Chandler is not a scorer. Not yet anyway. But if you have both of those guys on the floor, they compliment each other, and they'll make each other better at what they do. And I still think that both will only get better with time. The sky is the limit for Tyson Chandler. He's a balls-out motherf***er who will break his back for the team. With his physical tools, and more importantly, his passion for the game and his determination to win, you can begin to see why myself and certain others on here are salivating. On the other hand, you have Eddy Curry. No passion, no balls, no heart, no work ethic, no determination, no nothing. There might be a shortage of centers in this league, but that doesn't mean you give a loser 6/67 or 5/52. -

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 07:40 PM) Apparently the Kincks are trying to move Tim Thomas as well. I say they have to move him and Marbury because when the Knicks are ready to compete with their core, those guys will be old. The Knicks got the better player, but they also gave up a future first. Plus they lost a low post presence. As it stands now, Jamal Crawford is on the bench now from what I hear. First off, the Knicks have no core, but that is so obvious that further elaboration is pretty f***ing far from necessary. You consider a core to be Richardson/Crawford/Sweetney? That is an absolute nightmare. Marbury: 2005/2006: 16 Million 2006/2007: 18 Million 2007/2008: 20 Million 2008/2009: 22 Million Unless you can clone Isiah and place him in the GM position for the Raptors or somebody, no team is going to take on that enormous contract from a guy who is arguably the biggest loser in the NBA. I say arguably because you still have guys like Antoine Walker and Jalen Rose around.
