  1. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 07:27 PM) Actually, I would say that Phoenix might even have a chance at a championship without prowess at the defensive end, if they can accomplish 2 things. 1. They need to own the defensive boards. This is not an option. Those rebounds will lead to fast breaks, and giving up offensive boards will destroy the few defensive stops they get. 2. They need to be very close to the top of the league in steals; same reasons as above. Fast breaks and defensive stops. If they can do those things well, they will keep people from scoring more than 100-110 against them, and they will actually be able to outscore everyone else. The biggest problem I saw with the Suns in the Spurs series was rebounding. The Spurs owned the boards, which prevented a lot of the Suns fast breaks and gave the Spurs a lot of 2nd chance points. They're not going to own the defensive boards or any boards for that matter, that's the point. Any center that they throw out there will be waaay undersized. They have no perimiter defense outside of Marion, who is more a mid-range guy like Kirilenko or Posey. Of the 15 or so pertinent defensive categories, the only one that they show up in is least fouls committed, and even that is a fluke. They can never be a good all-around defensive team. Hell, they'll never have one particular area of defensive excellence.
  2. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 05:49 PM) This is a good trade for both teams A good trade for both teams? They just traded their best inside player, a guy who at only 6'9 and 225 pounds was tough enough to play center for them down the stretch. Let's review: 2005/2006 Knicks PG: Stephon Marbury (16.5 million) SG: Allan Houston (19.1 million), Anfernee Hardaway (15.7 million), Jamal Crawford (6.5 million), Quentin Richardson (6.3 million) SF: Tim Thomas (14 million), Shannon Anderson (6.7 million), PF: Maurice Taylor (9 million), Malik Rose (6 million), Junkyard Dog (6 million) C: ??? Keeping track? 106 million spread out for this crap with no center. The only promising young player that they have is Mike Sweetney, whom Isiah wanted/wants to trade. No trade is a good trade for the Knicks. Isiah also wants Vince Carter, Jalen Rose, etc.
  3. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 02:13 PM) Although his shot selection has not been the greatest as of late, he is still one of the top rebounders for his position and a solid NBA player. By no means am I calling him a superstar or even star at this point, but I've seen enough of his game in high school, college, and the NBA to know his basketball IQ is not as bad, or s***ty, as you put it. Richardson is an energy guy first and foremost, a tough rebounder for his size, and an above average defender out of the SG slot. That said, the addition of Kurt Thomas is pertinent to what they're trying to do over there. I'd also let go of Joe Johnson and go after a defensive stopper like Raja Bell at SG and a couple of solid bench players, as they'll still have plenty of offense in Stoudamire/Marion/Nash/Thomas. I know that Phoenix wouldn't have a fan base if not for offense (due to lack of interest, as is the case with many west coast teams), so I won't hate on their philosophy. Still, they will never be able to win a championship without areas of excellence on the defensive end. You look at teams like Detroit, San Antonio, and Indiana, and they could shut down both the paint and the perimiter. The Suns just don't have the personnel to do anything like that. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 02:13 PM) And now I have to think about what that does to Matrix's numbers in terms of fantasy...His boards will surely go down... Who cares about fantasy numbers? His natural position is SF. He could play tough mid-range defense out of that slot and be opportunistic out on the perimiter, whereas, at PF, he's getting murdered as guys are backing him down and getting easy shots. Marion at PF is almost as retarded as Odom, Walker, or Jamison at PF...these SFs just don't have the length or beef required to hang with PFs like Duncan, Garnett, Jermaine O'Neal, Sheed, Brand, Martin, Randolph, Howard, Okafor, Boozer, Webber, etc.
  4. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 06:27 PM) If this kid can play...then maybe we can finally start trying to hit the San Antonio Twin Towers style ball that Krause envisioned when we drafted those 2. Was that Jerry's master plan? Twin Towers? My grandmother could outrebound and play better defense than Curry. Oh wait, I forgot, Curry opens everything up in the lane so that others get rebounding opportunities, and that's why there are a dozen SGs in this league who grab more rebounds per game than he does, including Bobby Sura. Someone's gonna get stuck with a big f***ing stiff. Let's just hope that it's not us. 6 years/67 million? 5 years/52 million? Is that the going rate for half-assed centers?
  5. "Escape From New York" comes to mind immediately. Also, "Young Guns Pt. II" with the Jon Bon Jovi theme.
  6. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 23, 2005 -> 01:03 AM) I only did it once. Honestly, I am a good driver and abide by all laws and rules. This is what you said on page 2: You took it to the mall once, and you thought that you were a rebel.
  7. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 04:15 AM) Adios Munchacho. Oh, hell yeah. Toss that motherf***er out with the rest of the garbage.
  8. QUOTE(Jabroni @ Jun 21, 2005 -> 04:09 AM) C.C. Fatbathia's beautiful line against the Red Sox tonight: 4.2 IP 9 H 9 ER 0 BB 5 SO 2 HR He gave up a career high 9 ER and he is now 5-4 with a nice 4.66 ERA. That's f***ing terrible. 9 earned runs in less than 5 innings. What's even crazier is that the Indians nearly came back to win, losing by the score of 10-9.
  9. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jun 20, 2005 -> 08:34 PM) I hope we destroy old man Maddux for his Buehrle comment. Reporter: Mark Buehrle said that you use a spitball. Maddux: Who is Mark Buehrle? Umm, you need to recognize that the reporter is at fault in this particular situation. If I was Maddux, and you asked me this question, I'd have taken a shot at Buehrle as well. Besides, after Maddux found out what the deal was, he joked that he had never used a spitball, but he used a "sweatball" against Tony Gwynn, and he still couldn't get him out.
  10. How I'd rank the divisions: 1. NL East 2. AL East 3. AL Central 4. NL Central 5. AL West 6. NL West The NL Central has (arguably) more quality starters than any other division, what with Clemens, Oswalt, Pettite, Prior, Zambrano, Carpenter, Morris, Mulder, Sheets, Perez, etc. The AL Central is good, don't get me wrong, but we can't compete with the East.
  11. QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Jun 18, 2005 -> 04:56 PM) Utley has 30 hoemr pop, so it's not that crazy. But Castillo is terrific. He isn't running though now so it's a question of when he gets his legs/hip back. Just for the record, I was against the Lee-Pods trade wanting to deal Konerko for Castillo to leadoff for us. Maybe I'm sleeping on Chase, but still though.... Luis Castillo: Kicking ass since 1999 Chase Utley: Kicking ass since April of 2005 I choose Utley
  12. QUOTE(farmteam @ Jun 18, 2005 -> 03:56 AM) Dunno why, but I've always liked Luis Castillo. Good average, very good steals (will usually be near the top in steals) and can be an excellent leadoff hitter (even though Pierre is the leadoff hitter in Florida, as it should be). Also, good defensively, IIRC. The defense should be numero uno when discussing Luis Castillo. He is perhaps the best defensive second baseman in the majors (at least top 3). He is also hitting .330 with a .425 OBP this year. This is a bizarre thread. Chase motherf***ing Utley gets ranked ahead of Castillo? Tadahito Iguchi, LOL?
  13. Great interview. A few highlights: *Mark's favorite cheese is pepper jack *When it comes to burgers, he's strictly a ketchup man. No mustard under any circumstances (he had that Clint Eastwood tone goin'), *His favorite video game is Tiger Woods Golf *He reads both the Tribune and the Sun Times...he doesn't prefer one over the other. *He's a die-hard Cardinals fan for life, and he wouldn't mind playing there in the twilight years of his career *His neighbor stalks him...he called the score and asked if he could come over and shake his hand *He said that a s***load of guys put spit on the ball. When asked to snitch on a specific player, Mark refused to do so, although he said that someone is guilty on the north side *He believes that the Sox should let people into the upper deck for free during the weekdays, as the Sox would still make a good deal of money on parking and concessions.
  14. B&B just said that Maggs and Urbina got into a fight on the team plane. I guess that Urbina had a few too many or whatever. Ugueth also had a verbal confrontation with Troy Percival. If anyone has more info, post it.
  15. QUOTE(ozzieguillen @ Jun 16, 2005 -> 04:51 PM) When you get caught, you're a cheater, but if you don't get caught, you're a smart man. There is a lot of people using it, but they don't get caught. You gotta admire Ozzie sometimes. Sure, I often cringe when he mismanages the bullpen, or brings Timo in to pinch hit when there are much better options on the bench, but no manager just comes out and says something like this. Call him a rat, a snitch, etc. At least he's righteous (for the most part) in his blatant honesty. He is so much better than Dusty Baker that it's hard to put into words.
  16. What a shame. IMO, in the history of the Chicago White Sox, here are your three best outfielders: Joe Jackson Magglio Ordonez Harold Baines And that is the particular order that I'd put them in. White Sox Players 1901-2004 Call me crazy, call me demented, but that's what I came up with after researching everything.
  17. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ Jun 16, 2005 -> 03:58 PM) BTW, I see Hamerhead in here. I made it over to that German deli the other day and went to town on the Haribro gummies! That's a nice little mall, although it reeks of German snobs. Did you get any beef jerky? :salivating
  18. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 16, 2005 -> 03:21 PM) Are you defending marijuana? It's a drug. It's illegal. That's all their is to it. Go slam down some beers, then.
  19. QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 16, 2005 -> 03:15 PM) Good grief.. sorry I even posted this. :headshake Hey, no problem. Very few things in life piss me off more than people who will criticize weed and then go slam down some beers (not saying this is you). It's so hypocritical that it makes me sick to my stomach.
  20. QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 16, 2005 -> 02:49 PM) Why the hell are you asking me...?? I think the assholes caught with coke, pot, meth, roids, etc, etc, etc.. should be IN JAIL. Alcohol is a hell of a lot worse than weed, though. I'll never understand why people lump marijuana in with hardcore drugs like cocaine, crystal meth, paint thinner, etc. You can abuse alcohol to the point where it destroys your family, particularly when you're the breadwinner or so-called "head of household". I've seen it happen numerous times to friends and friends of friends. You can abuse weed to the point where....well, let's just say that you won't be going on wife and child-beating expeditions and wiping out families on the highway. Less extreme examples include being unbelievably obnoxious in public and starting fights (Sox games, for instance). Smoke too much weed and you'll catch a headache, basically. It makes you passive, paranoid, etc. It's not physically addictive. Anybody who smokes weed can stop any time they want to, as opposed to alcohol where you have to go to Alcoholics Anonymous for a month or whatever, and that s*** doesn't even cure you in the majority of cases.
  21. QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Jun 16, 2005 -> 02:41 PM) It wasn't that bad of an analogy. I would imagine that The Portland Trailblazers' attendance drops would be partly attributed to their criminal persona. Again, we're talking about what, marijuana possession? Gun possession? You're probably an idiot if you're carrying a loaded pistol in Oregon or you're trying to get through a metal detector with weed wrapped up in aluminum foil, but it doesn't make you a straight-up criminal (a felon to be more specific, a danger to society). Mike Ditka is more dangerous to society than any Portland Trailblazer could ever be, what with his numerous DUIs. When you hop into your car severely intoxicated off of some Jim Beam, you pose a major threat to those around you. And yet, Ditka is still a hero to the masses, a true marketing tool. Hell, he's my hero. I'm not gonna deny it.
  22. QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jun 16, 2005 -> 01:51 PM) The thing is though that society tends to reward "criminals" all the time. Look at Detroit and Indiana in the NBA, for example. Detroit? Who are you referring to specifically, Rasheed Wallace? IIRC, he's been arrested for marijuana possession, but nothing else. Does he give off a criminal vibe on the court because he lets his emotions get the best of him? The Pistons are clearly a classy team. They're all hard-working, team concept players. And like I said when it happened, if Ben Wallace is a criminal for going after Artest, then so is everyone else who has ever pushed anyone on the court. That would include guys like Larry Bird and Michael Jordan. If you play enough basketball (and I know I have), you're gonna end up getting into a shoving match or two, especially when you get fouled in a flagrant manner.
  23. Holy Mary Mother Of God. We were down 6-2 right before I hopped in the shower not even 20 minutes ago, and now we're up 9-6? Unreal. Cheat = The Man
  24. Chris Carpenter pitched a CG shutout against the Blue Jays yesterday, giving up only one hit and one walk. His WHIP is now 1.21, so I'll be expecting him to crack the Top 20 when I update this thread in a couple weeks. Chris might be the best-kept secret in all of baseball right now.
