QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jul 10, 2005 -> 05:00 AM) I'm pretty sure Hughes could shut down Arenas I'm pretty sure that Arenas would tear him a new asshole like 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. Stick with weed, dude. There's no need to be experimenting with them hardcore drugs.

Bobby Jenks to be on the Score
hammerhead johnson replied to Al Lopez Ghost (old)'s topic in Pale Hose Talk
Jenks actually sounded like he had a brain. I wonder what the hell he was thinking when he was in the Angels organization. Also, I'm beginning to wonder why the Angels would just give up on this guy as well as Derrick Turnbow. Derrick has seemingly turned the corner and found himself some control, although we have yet to find out if Jenks can be relied upon on a consistent basis. -
QUOTE(upnorthsox @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 01:48 PM) For that comment Hammerhead's daughter will make the DVD cover of Girls Gone Wild XV........... That is precisely what will happen. I know I'm like super conservative or whatever, but I look down on any dude who would associate himself with some whore who posed nude in a magazine for everyone and their father to see. I think Scotty Pods is a dope, but I sure as hell like to watch him run them bases?

Also, nitetrain just said that Sleepy has given him "hope" for all basketball fans on this board. That may very well be the most hilarious thing that I have ever read on here.

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jul 9, 2005 -> 02:58 AM) Thank you. You have given me hope for basketball fans on this board. And yeah, I don't get how anyone calls Joe Johnson a bad defender. He's an above average defender. Some people improve on things hammerhead, especially in 2 years. He was a pretty poor defender when he was defending nothing but PG's while with Philly and with Washington, but as a SG, he's an + on the ball defender and he's great at anticipation of the pass. He's simply a ballhawk. I'm still trying to figure out who the poster child was for Washinton's absolutely atrocious defense this past year. Hmm, let's see. You have confused Kwame, slow-footed Brendan Haywood, sweet Antawn, a compulsive gambler in Larry Hughes, etc. Here comes another football analogy. I'd liken Hughes to a CB who will get 10 interceptions, but also get burnt for a touchdown like damn near every game. Here's a difficult concept: It's not wise to go for the turnover every freaking time. You have to pick and choose your spots. Being overly opportunistic is not necessarily a good thing. And in regards to Joe Johnson, here's an exact quote from a review before the 2004-2005 season started: Tell me something. How was his defense coming into this season, and also, name me some guys who have drastically changed overnight (in less than a year's time, basically). This ought to be fun. I'm not saying that I'm right, I just want to hear why I'm wrong.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 11:52 PM) So what's that 5 good SG/SF types now, and C or PG still? Yep, abandon all hope. Childress and Smith had me thinking otherwise last year, but it's back to business as usual for the Hawks. Forever in suck mode.

Hold on, she let everyone see her assets for the cash? Wow, what a classy chick. Sounds like someone I'd like to breed with. Scotty boy :headshake

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 11:21 PM) Hughes is a pretty good on the ball defender. There's a reason why he was first team All NBA Defense. There's a ton of guys who are towards the top for steals and don't get the award so to suggest that he only got on because of his steal numbers is pretty poor. No, it's not poor. What is poor is the fact that you spend so much time researching basketball, and you still don't know what's up in a lot of cases. Maybe you're just not looking at the right things, I dunno. It's pretty much common knowlege to any serious basketball fan that Larry Hughes is a run of the mill defender. I mean, you only have to watch a couple of games to find that out. Pretty good on-the-ball defender my ass.

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 10:35 PM) all you people can do is rip Cleveland for signing him. He is not a superstar, but he is a solid player that does a bit of everything. He ain't worth no 13 million. I'd give him maybe 6. I'm ripping Cleveland the organization, the straight-up laughingstock. There is plenty of comedy to be found in the NBA, Cleveland is just one of the many destinations.

QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 10:27 PM) comparing the NFL and the NBA makes no sense. I was talking about adapting to the competition within your division by focusing on certain facets. This applies to all of the major sports. I'm not comparing any two sports straight up. Sure it makes sense, analogies don't get much more simple than that. QUOTE(aboz56 @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 10:27 PM) He led the NBA in steals last year and was All Defensive First Team. And that is one of the biggest travesties I've ever seen since I became a serious basketball fan like 15 years ago. 1st Team NBA defense, OMG. Larry Hughes is a run of the mill defender out of the SG slot. He just doesn't have what it takes to play consistently good defense night in and night out. You wanna see a compulsive gambler who can't stay in front of guys? Look no further than Mr. Larry Hughes. Hell yes box score fans will tell you he's a good defender, I wouldn't expect otherwise.

QUOTE(knightni @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 09:44 PM) PM FlippedOutPunk. Tell him that you wanna see Lil Flip. He'll send you a picture. Now now, I ain't falling for that.

What the f*** is a lil flip?

It's gonna be one hell of a battle between the Cavs and the Bucks for last place. You need defense in the worst way, but you sign Larry Hughes for what, 13 million per year???? What's worse is that you have these defensive powerhouses like Detroit and Indiana in your own division. Sweet Jesus. For example, in the NFL, in a division like the AFC East let's say, teams adapt. The Jets go out and draft Abraham, Elllis, Robertson, and Vilma in consecutive drafts. The Bills go out and get Takeo Spikes, Pat Williams, Sam Adams, Lawyer Milloy, etc. How else are you gonna pose a threat to that crazy motherf***ing defensive powerhouse in Boston? I'm certainly looking forward to seeing the Cavs get whooped. Perhaps they'll win 45, but they're still gonna get their asses handed to them in the first round. Talk about a stooopid f***ing organization, OMG.

QUOTE(ChWRoCk2 @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 04:31 AM) 3. cleveland is doing s*** gammons u idiot Does "doing s***" mean putting up numbers like these for pitching: Team ERA: 3.68 Team WHIP: 1.23 Team BAA: .246 Hell yeah they're a f***ing surprise. I have no problem with them being on this list. I figured that they were a team on the rise in 04, mostly on the strength of their up-and-coming position players. But strangely enough, it has been their pitching that has them 7 games over .500 I don't watch BBTN, but at this point, they all gotta be acting like they know. I can't imagine that they'd want to dwell on their terrible Sox predictions show after show after show.

I knew this would turn into one of those threads with like Q101 playlists and what not.

QUOTE(3E8 @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 03:57 AM) But I've seen him take bad routes so maybe it can't account for balls you don't get to. I'm not trying to s*** all over anyone's parade , but Scotty Pods couldn't play defense to save his life. Some people may think that he's capable because of his speed, but really, he is bottom of the barrel when it comes to fielding. But yes, as noted by OttawaSox in the post right above mine, he puts a lot of pressure on the opposing defense, and that ain't showing up in any box scores. Also, as noted by the Cheat, that is his one and only tool. A very, very important tool, nonetheless.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 01:38 AM) Jimmy Piersall also thinks the White Sox are going all the way. Right on. He has talked about our pitching and our defense up the middle time and time again. s***, he's an expert on defensive baseball and fundamentals in general. One can learn a s***load if they listen to him on a consistent basis. I loooove Jimmy Piersall, always have. To the creator of this thread: boooooooo

QUOTE(forrestg @ Jul 8, 2005 -> 03:15 AM) Podsednik has not not only become a great leadoff man but the man who goes first is also a team leader something that statistics don't always show. I guess that you have to be charismatic to even get on base and put yourself in a position to score runs, lol?

QUOTE(VAfan @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 09:19 PM) I think people just get wowed with his "stuff", which of course is why KW traded for Jose Contreras last year Jose Contreras is ancient. Hell yes people were wowed by his stuff when he was in his prime. I'm wowed by Burnett's stuff, and I have yet to determine how this is a bad thing? Of course you don't want him on your team for $10 to $12 M per when you have Buehrle/Garland/Garcia plus a bunch of other guys that need to be signed in the near future, not to mention the "small things" to take care of as dybber noted. But if I'm a team like the Tigers or Indians let's say, and I have some money to work with, AJ for $10 M per year is a good deal as he is now entering his prime (28-32). As stated, he had an 87% quality start percentage entering July, he strikes out an even 9 batters per 9 IP, his WHIP is very respectable (1.22, was lower going into July), he allows 2.3 walks per game (not terrible), he has 99 hits allowed in 113 IP, etc. Am I putting too much weight in his 2005 stats? I don't think so, as he's just now entering his prime (sorry for reiterating). Remember, it's not a bad thing to pitch 6 innings every time out and hand it over to your bullpen, unless you're Atlanta or somebody and you have jack s*** to work with. With an 87% quality start percentage going into July, he should have more than just 5 wins. 14 quality starts, 5 f***ing wins? Therefore, you'll never hear me talking about win totals, as that has sooo much to do with how your offense and bullpen performs. I'll take WHIP and ERA every freaking time. Ben Sheets and Randy Johnson had literally two of the best seasons in teh history of pitching last year, but they both won less than 15 games. EDIT: Johnson went 16-14, Sheets went 12-14

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 07:43 PM) how so? Walks, inconsistency, about to be a high dollar player. And Aj will command more money that JC in his new deal, especially going into FA'cy Rock, From what I read on here, you usually know your s***, but AJ had a 87% quality start ratio going into July (Quality starts in 14 out of 16 starts). He's damn good, an no, I'm not delusional enough to buy into ANY AND ALL trade talk discussed on here, but I'd like him on my team.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 7, 2005 -> 07:11 PM) Heres something to chew on. Aj Burnett = Jose Contreras Ain't Burnett the guy who has quality starts like 80 to 85% of the time, up there with Roger Clemens, Roy Oswalt, and Chris Carpenter? Or am I wrong?

QUOTE(Jordan4life_2005 @ Jul 4, 2005 -> 08:37 AM) You seen to have an obsession with defense. lol I bet your ideal team would be Dalembert, Chandler, Bowen, Artest, Hassell? My ideal 12 man squad, the team that I'd send to smash all competition in the olympics: PG: Kidd/Tinsley SG: Pierce/McGrady SF: Artest/Prince/Bowen PF: Duncan/Garnett/Jermaine C: Shaq/Wallace Snubs: Amare Stoudamire, Dwyane Wade
