We're 23 pages in, and I'm still seeing pictures of hot chicks. I have stopped myself from saying anything up to this point, but seriously, a lot of y'all are borderline retarded. What's the difference between us and Cubs fans again? Good God.

QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Aug 19, 2005 -> 03:17 AM) Huh? Just off the top of my head, I know Hampton was 4. And looking it up, Payton was 4 (I knew he was high, just didn't know where exactly). And certainly they've had more than that. Do you mean recently? There is no question that he was talking about recent Bears history, and you can't blame a guy for having Curtis Enis waaaay the f*** out of mind. Since 1965: 1965: Both Butkus and Sayers were Top 5 picks (3 and 4 respectively). 1972: Lionel Antoine 1974: Waymond Bryant 1975: Walter Payton 1979: Dan Hampton 1982: Jim McMahon 1998: Curtis Enis 2005: Cedric Benson

QUOTE(hammerhead johnson @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 09:04 PM) I'll be watching to see if anyone else emerges, but I wouldn't bet on it. You know what? Someone's gonna have to emerge, what with their first three picks spent on CBs and Walls coming back from inury. We'll see, it's gonna be interesting. If that secondary comes together, they'll win 11+ games. And if Courtney Brown and Gerard Warren finally fulfill their potential to go along with impact players in Pryce, Wilson, and Williams in that front 7? They could meet New England in the AFC Championship game. That's a lot of ifs, though. -

QUOTE(rangercal @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 08:59 PM) I.e Bailey for Portis And what a deal that was. Outside of Bailey and old-ass John Lynch, that secondary is trash. I'll be watching to see if anyone else emerges, but I wouldn't bet on it. -

QUOTE(GoSox05 @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 07:34 PM) denver has good running backs cause of there godamn ilegal chop blocks. there offensive line has ended a couple seasons for some DE They always have damn good personnel on the O-Line because they make it their #1 priority, just like Kansas City and St. Louis. And their schemes are just top notch. Backs like Droughns, Gary, Anderson, Griffith, and Bell are nothing special. Well, to be fair, the book is still out on Bell. Point is, you can bring in just about any run-of-the-mill schmuck at HB, and they'd have an outside shot at 1200+ yards. -
QUOTE(Texsox @ Aug 16, 2005 -> 02:26 PM) Hammer, it's in the details. I believe we have a linguist in the William Clinton tradition. Note: Officially Hmmm, you're probably right. I need some coffee.

Christie has the brains (on the court), and he's in great shape. He would help a good overall squad that needs some stopgap defense out of the SG slot. He's old, but not that old. -

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 09:50 PM) Basketball numbskull for saying that Joe Johnson improved on defense and is now a pretty good defender?? Go to any real basketball messageboard and say that and they'll laugh at you then continue to ban you. Naah, you misunderstood. Let's not forget that you have been s***ting on these here threads for quite a while now. It doesn't all boil down to just one particular conversation. Sometimes it's better to just read and NOT respond. You know what I'm saying? -

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 08:09 PM) Whatevr the case I think the Bears defese is going to surprise you Hammer. While Ian Scott seems average the Bears organzation has had nothing but good things to say about him which leads me to believe he might be better. Also Alex Brown was like a step away from so many sacks last year and he has worked hard this offseason to improve that and get a quicker jump and we havent seen a healthy ogunleye yet. Our defense is extremely balanced and there is no one pacific weak link in it that you can point at. Sure there is Hunter Hillenmeyer and Ian Scott but they arent bad at all just not great. And Hunter showed last year he could be really good while filling in for Urlacher some but im not completely sold on him. I love the Bears defense. If they were to lead the league in takeaways, I wouldn't be surprised. On the other hand, our lack of depth at LB and CB are major holes that can not be taken lightly. We can get by with adequate players at oen particular DT slot, there is no question about it. The NFL is a confusing league. It's difficult to know anything definitively because of injuries, shelf-life, roster turnover, etc. One thing I know for sure is that depth rules all. That's why I have the Patriots at #1, even without Johnson (who retired on July 28, right over my head) and Bruschi. I'd say that they're a no-brain pick for best defense, and the only team that comes close in my eyes is Jacksonville. And just because Buffalo and Carolina have excellent defensive squads, it doesn't mean that they are both locks for the playoffs. Same with Jacksonville, Baltimore, and Chicago. They all have major holes on offense that could turn them into mediocre overall teams. Carolina is my Super Bowl pick in the NFC, but will I be surprised if they don't make the playoffs? Nope. The NFL is crazy like that. -

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 07:52 PM) ask his wife? I'm not good with the NBA Doug Christie still has some quality defensive play left in the tank. He's a shadow of his former self, though. I'd take him for a year or two. -

QUOTE(AirScott @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 05:54 PM) if Hutchinson doesn't play well in the first 4 weeks, Orton probably will get a shot. you're right, the Bears have shown us they will. hell, me and my buddy were bored last night, so we ended up running down all the starting QBs the Bears used since Jim McMahon left. our final count (just off the top of our heads) was 14. this was everyone from Jim Harbaugh to Erik Kramer to Steve Walsh, then guys like Moses Moreno and Craig Krenzel. I still think there were more, though. Peter Tom Willis Motherf***ing phenom. -

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 05:42 PM) to hammer for taking the time to put all that together. Obviously people are gonna argue with you when you make that many judgements, but on the whole it looks really really solid analysis. Except Lance Briggs grade of course. Thanks, bro. Briggs was a tough call, but I figured that people would think I was a Bears dope if I called him All-Pro Caliber. I was generous with the Mike Green rating as well, because most feel that he's merely adequate. -

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 12:45 PM) And the buffalo guys can be underated all they want they arent Pro Bowl players and for you to think so makes me Chris Kelsay No player is poised for stardom on defense more than the third-year pro out of Nebraska. Chris started the final 9 games last year and wound up with 37 tackles, 4 1/2 sacks, one interception, two fumble recoveries, and 15 quarterback hits. He has a terrific first step and his motor allows for consistent playmaking from the backside. He bulked up this past offseason in order to become sturdier against the run. Aaron Schobel Schobel's sack numbers dropped from 11 1/2 in 2003 to 8 in 2004, but he enjoyed his best all-around season. Aaron is a relentless pass-rusher with speed off the edge. His biggest improvement came on run defense. He has gotten stronger at the point of attack and has learned how to better use his hands to keep offensive linemen off of his body. But this is all pointless, I suppose. If you think that the Ravens are the best defense in the NFL, and the Bears are the second best, I can't argue with you. -

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Aug 15, 2005 -> 12:45 PM) Well now your saying our other DT's are adequete players right now which just shows that its not really a hole. This is one of the first things that I said before I typed the depth charts: Very, very simple. There is no way in hell that one could be completely accurate with this s***. So much of it is subjective. But it would be cool if people actually read things through before responding. -

QUOTE(DukeNukeEm @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 09:59 PM) Tillman, Harris and Brown all have the talent to be All-Pro's, but in all honesty, they all might not pan out. Tommie Harris is thought of as a star around the league, actually. IMO, he is our most valuable defensive player. You can make good arguments for Urlacher or Brown, though. -

QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 10:42 PM) The bears defense has no holes in it really unless you want to say Hunter Hillenmeyer but he didnt look that bad last year. As long as Azumah stays healthy he is a solid CB and has gotten better at the position each year so thats definitely not a hole as of now. Our DT is far from a hole 2. Ian Scott showed last year he could handle it pretty well. He is by far not pro bowl material but he isnt hurting the defense he is a pretty solid player. Ravens are the only team that id say have a better defense than us right now. Jacksonville you overate and the Panthers arent as good either. They have Jenkins, Peppers, Morgan, and Minter the rest arent amazing at all. Ricky Manning had a horrible year last year and Lucas isnt anything special. And their OLB's are not really that much better than Hillenmeyer. Buffalo is a really good defense 2 but I think we might be better. Although i wouldnt call Clements, kelsey, or Schobel all pro calibur. Ian Scott, Alphonso Boone, and Tank Johnson are all adequate players right now. Azumah is a run-of-the-mill CB if I've ever seen one. Great special teams player, though. Nate Clements is a motherf***ing stud CB. Schobel and Kelsey are two of the more underrated defensive ends in the NFL, your point is proof of that. Are they not rated very highly on X-Box or playstation? The Ravens are not an elite defense. Ray Lewis is nowhere near what he once was...he couldn't shed blocks for s*** in the 3-4. They have holes at both DT slots, OLB (with the departure of Hartwell), Strong Safety, etc. You have them ranked ahead of New England? Jacksonville and Carolina are top defensive teams. Really now, there is no argument there. When I think "Devastating Front 7", those two come to mind immediately. Their secondaries ain't too shabby either. Ricky Manning is somewhere between adequate and above average, but closer to the latter. -

The White Sox have had three in the Top 20 for the majority of the season (Buehrle, Garland, Garcia), but when I do my next update, there is a good chance that they'll hve nobody on this list. Dontrelle Willis fell from #10 overall to #28 overall, and now he's back to #13 overall. Brett Myers continues to fall. He's at #27 overall right now.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Aug 14, 2005 -> 05:32 PM) I'll let someone else have the honors. I am 100% sure the Bears will have the best D in the NFL this year barring injuries. The Bears could never, ever begin to approach the Elite 4. New England Jacksonville Buffalo Carolina Let's take a look at this more closely. I will only list players who are above average (aka solid) or better. If you're merely adequate, you represent a hole as far as I'm concerned. First off, one of the deepest defensive squads in the history of the NFL: New England FS: Eugene Wilson (All-Pro Caliber) SS: Rodney Harrison (All-Pro Caliber) CB: Duane Starks (Solid), Randall Gay (Solid) CB: Asante Samuel (Solid), Tyrone Poole (Solid) OLB: Willie McGinnest (Solid), Rosey Colvin (Solid) ILB: Ted Johnson (Solid) ILB: Chad Brown (Solid), Monty Beisel (Solid) OLB: Mike Vrabel (All-Pro Caliber) DE: Richard Seymour (All-Pro Caliber) DT: Vince Wilfork (All-Pro Caliber) DE: Ty Warren (All-Pro Caliber), Jarvis Green (Solid) I'm counting 16 guys who are solid (aka above average) or better. There is not one hole on this defense. It's New England, and then the following 3 teams: Jacksonville FS: Deon Grant (Solid) SS: Donovan Darius (All-Pro Caliber) CB: Rashean Mathis (All-Pro Caliber) CB: Kiwaukee Thomas (Solid) OLB: Akin Oyodele (Solid) MLB: Mike Peterson (All-Pro Caliber) OLB: Daryl Smith (Solid), Greg Favors (Solid) DE: Paul Spicer (Solid) DT: Marcus Stroud (All-Pro Caliber), Tony Williams (Solid) DT: John Henderson (All-Pro Caliber), Rob Meier (Solid) DE: Reggie Hayward (All-Pro Caliber), Bobby McCray (Solid) Buffalo FS: Troy Vincent (Solid) SS: Lawyer Milloy (All-Pro Caliber) CB: Nate Clements (All-Pro Caliber) CB: Terrence McGee (Solid) OLB: Jeff Posey (Solid) MLB: London Fletcher (Solid) OLB: Takeo Spikes (All-Pro Caliber) DE: Chris Kelsay (All-Pro Caliber) DT: HOLE DT: Sam Adams (All-Pro Caliber) DE: Aaron Schobel (All-Pro Caliber) Carolina FS: HOLE SS: Mike Minter (Solid) CB: Ken Lucas (Solid), Ricky Manning (Solid) CB: Chris Gamble (Solid) OLB: Thomas Davis (Solid) MLB: Dan Morgan (All-Pro Caliber) OLB: Will Witherspoon (Solid) DE: Julius Peppers (All-Pro Caliber) DT: Brentson Buckner (Solid) DT: Kris Jenkins (All-Pro Caliber) DE: Mike Rucker (All-Pro Caliber) Now that we have the elite 4 out of the way, we have the teams ranked 5 through 13 IMO in no particular order because it's too tough to call at this point. Those teams: Chicago Pittsburgh Philadelphia Baltimore Denver Dallas Washington Tampa Bay San Diego Now, let's take a closer look. As I have said, I won't even attempt to put these teams in any particular order. I'll also have a 14-22 bracket for teams that are middle-of-the-road. Some might wonder why I don't have the NY Jets or Atlanta in the Top 13, but I'll go on to explain later. They'd round out the Top 15 IMO. Chicago FS: Mike Green (Solid) SS: Mike Brown (All-Pro Caliber) CB: Charles Tillman (Solid) CB: HOLE OLB: Lance Briggs (Solid) MLB: Brian Urlacher (All-Pro Caliber) OLB: HOLE DE: Alex Brown (Solid) DT: HOLE DT: Tommie Harris (All-Pro Caliber) DE: Adawale Ogunleye (All-Pro Caliber) Now, scroll back up real quick and compare the elite 4 with the Bears. We just can't f*** with those teams. Philadelphia FS: Brian Dawkins (All-Pro Caliber) SS: Mike Lewis (All-Pro Caliber) CB: Sheldon Brown (All-Pro Caliber) CB: Lito Shepherd (Solid) OLB: HOLE MLB: Jeremiah Trotter (Solid) OLB: HOLE DE:
