QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 26, 2007 -> 05:59 PM) Jameson whiskey on the rocks. My first few bottles I had to add some water, but over the course of the year (got into it when my parents came back from Ireland and fell in love with it) I'm finally able to handle it straight up for the most part. About 2 glasses (4-5 shots) and I'm good for the night. Thank you, sir. Was about to post this. There is nothing better than Jameson on the rocks. If you don't think you can handle whiskey or don't like the taste, let it sit in the ice for a few minutes and you're golden. It tastes fantastic. (But don't chug.)

We all know about his injuries. He didn't even pitch last season. But, if the Sox can deal Contreras and rid his salary, is Prior worth taking a risk on? Word is the doctor gave him a very good prognosis after his shoulder surgery and we all know, that when this guy is on, he just about as good as any pitcher in the league. I also can't imagine what the Cubs would ask for him, except that they'd probably ask for too much for a pitcher who hasn't thrown 200+ since 2003. But with all the talks about trading Contreras and taking a risk on Colon or another sort, I feel like Prior looks like the most attractive option--given the price to get him is right. I certainly feel like he has the highest ceiling in terms of a reward factor.

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Nov 26, 2007 -> 12:00 AM) What is this freezing rain and snowflakes stuff you speak of?? It's interesting stuff. It's generally white unless a dog uses it as its washroom. I try to avoid these sections of frozen rain. Now, my favorite part about this stuff is that you can pack it together into a ball and throw it at people's genitalia. I hate warm weather. I love snow.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Nov 23, 2007 -> 07:11 PM) Occasionally in this thread you'll see lists about 'Best Games Ever' and I'm surprised to see that some of my favorite games don't end up on these lists. I find it interesting because I think a lot of these lists depend on how the person 'grew up'. For example, if you're anything like me, you grew up with either Sega or Nintendo, not both. I shouldn't say "not both" -- that only applies to the original systems, so Sega Genesis vs Nintendo/Super Nintendo. Around the time of Sega Dreamcast -- which was before Playstation 1 but at the same time of Nintendo 64, right? -- I bought both Dreamcast and the 64 (I'm pretty sure I'm on a correct 'timeline' here, someone can correct me if I'm wrong). Anyways -- I've certainly digressed enough -- here's my list of top games (in no specific order). And my rankings are, generally speaking, based along how long these games held a strong 'enjoyable' sense in my mind. In parenthesis I may clarify or specify a specific part of each game. I'll also try to keep it oldest to newest and please, feel free to list your own and/or critique mine: Sonic 2 NHL '93 (? -- it was the last one with fighting, so '93 or '94) World Series Baseball '95 The Resident Evil Series (oddly enough, I've never played the game that is considered the best in this series -- RE 4 is it?, the one for Gamecube. In my mind the original Resident Evil was the best, followed by Nemesis, Code Veronica and 2) Mario 64 Supersmash Brothers GoldenEye The Wrestling series for Nintendo 64 (No Mercy, WCW/NWO Revenge, etc etc -- all were fantastic) SOCOM 1 and 2 MVP 2005 HALO (Multiplayer only, and only for the first Halo -- I haven't attached myself to 2 and 3) It's a shame -- I'm sure I'm missing out on a ton of games. I left Madden and NCAA off the list, even though those are the games that currently consume most of my gaming time. I want to get into a good multiplayer game online but I haven't found one. Someone mentioned CoD4 online is more of a free-for-all, KILL KILL KILL game while I'd prefer a little more strategy. Maybe that new Tom Clancy game that BobDylan mentioned might be something I'd like... Some great games on there. But I feel like if I picked some of those up today and started playing, they wouldn't lend me any more than an hour or two of fun. But if I picked up something like Metroid Prime or FF7 or Chrono Trigger, my week is shot dead for those games. Of course, though, it's all just personal preference.

QUOTE(DrunkBomber @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 04:15 PM) I did end up getting Uncharted. Everyone in there said it was much better than either of the other two games. They said Cod4 was good, but if I dont plan on playing online its not that good. The single player campaign in CoD4 is actually quite good. The online is where the replay value is at with that game, but I got tired of the online play. It was too deathmatch oriented and that's not my style. I bought Uncharted as well, and it's a great game. The campaign mode is slightly more fun than CoD4, but I don't think it has the replay value of CoD. I don't feel like a lot of single player only games have a lot of replay value, though. The games I pick up again and again are the ones I go online with. It makes sense you didn't like Resistance if you don't play online--the campaign mode is terrible. But online is packed and probably has the best online format of any FPS out there. You can play just about any type of game you want, you can find all your friends quite easily and the clan support is the best I've seen from an online game.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 25, 2007 -> 05:30 PM) And we would start who in his place? We are going to have 2 rookies in the rotation already, there is no better option than Jose to eat innings at this point. Dropping Contreras and his salary is the first step towards making a run at Johan when/if he hits the open market. The Mets asking for the 5 mil is the kicker--if they want cash, send a better player. If they don't want cash, send whoever they want. Also, you can take a one year flier on Colon, who has the same risk/reward factor as Jose, but with a lower price tag and no second year locked on. Unloading Jose also gives them the opportunity to spend a little extra on a CFer. I still also feel like KW will improve upon the rotation before spring training hits. The problem is that I don't think KW can fill the three glaring holes this team has right now--CF, Leadoff hitter, 3rd starter. I feel like he can fill two, if he's good, but not all three.

QUOTE(iamshack @ Nov 20, 2007 -> 05:56 PM) We are all dumber for having read this nonsense. Why waste our time, your own time, the electricity required to run your computer so you could enter in these posts? Why don't you just admit you wanted to look cool by posting something you merely were guessing on but wanted to make it look like you had some inside information? The timing of the news which stated Hunter did have dinner with Hicks and Daniels made you look like a jackass, and then you began backtracking from there, with this "it's just my opinion" nonsense. Just to think logically for a minute, WHY would there not be an announcement already if there was ALREADY a deal completed? Because you are not stating that a deal WILL occur in the next 5 days, you are stating that a deal has ALREADY occurred. Can you please explain to us why the White Sox, Rangers, and Hunter himself would all be bs'ing everyone like this? Logically. Why? Seriously. I wish I could have the 10 minutes I took to backtrack and read such a pointless argument back. I am substantially dumber. I am going to have to drop out of college because I've lost mass brain cells from it. I might as well have done opium my whole life--it'd be the same effect as reading this argument. ...Alright, a little dramatic. But christ, what a nonsensical argument. I'll settle it. Torii Hunter is not a White Sox, yet. Stay tuned.

QUOTE(CrimsonWeltall @ Nov 18, 2007 -> 11:14 PM) The guns are unique and interesting. What do you mean they're all too powerful? You think it's too easy to die? Find a medic. I'm not sure what you're looking for in terms of clan support. It's not difficult for clans to get together and face each other on their servers. As far as spys and snipers are concerned, they're classes which contribute to the team as a whole but generally work alone. Yes, I finished the original on NES (eh), Super Metroid (great), and one on Gameboy I don't remember much about (also eh). Can you not name a clever or memorable puzzle from Metroid Prime? The puzzles don't really have names. And it's been years since I've played any of them, so no, I can't really recall any puzzles or name them. However, I do remember, in the 2nd Metroid Prime, the very last puzzle where you had to find all the keys to open the last room and fight the final boss was an absolute b****. Not very a fun puzzle.

QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Nov 18, 2007 -> 09:18 PM) Hey, I'll get in on the TF2 bashing. As I said about ten pages back, it's the most disapointing game I have ever played. I paid 45$ to play the beta early as I was in extreme hype mode. But I hate it. Despise it. Will never go back to it. Unplayable. If I had it in disk form I would break it in half. Which is unfortunate, as I waited, very, very paitiently for 9 years for the game. But after 9 years of playing TF 1.5, I simply cannot play TF2. It's a piece of crap. But still, plenty of people like it. I just do not. Did you play the 3rd Metroid Prime? I traded my Wii for a 360 so I never got the opportunity to see how it was.
-
QUOTE(CrimsonWeltall @ Nov 18, 2007 -> 12:08 PM) 1. l disagree with almost every element of your list (haven't played them all). I also notice your list tends greatly toward console shooters. No mention of Battlefield, UT, Quake, etc. Did you play TF2 on 360 or PC? And what exactly do you not like about TF2? The fact that it's tough to Rambo? I think that's a good thing. If you really don't want to cooperate with people, you can always play Sniper or Spy, who don't require much assistance. The only downside at the moment is the lack of maps, which should get better of time since HL2 has always had an very active community. 2. Which is good, why? To allow the player to spend 30 minutes backtracking to pick up a missile pack? I'm a console gamer. Of course I'd list all the console shooters. I played the 360 version of TF2 and wasn't impressed in the slightest, neither was my roommate who played the original TF (and was addicted) and also TF2 for the PC. The maps are lacking, the guns are limited and all too much powerful all together. There's no clan support, which, if it's TEAM Fortress 2, why the f*** not? And, judging from what you say about Snipers and Spy's, you must not understand the team elements of TF2, either. As far as MP, free roaming games are generally a puzzle just in the fact that the map is open for the gamer and he's not limited to only pushing forward. HL2 is sort of like playing the original Mario; the only way to go is forward. There's never a thought lingering in the back of your head saying, "Wait, did I miss something back there?" The open map is beautiful in that it nearly forces the player to explore every crevice within every room. In linear games, all you gotta do is shoot all the guys and then you can go forward. Sure, it can be fun, but it's almost impossible to screw up. The fact is, if you don't like wide open puzzle games (and since you're denying that MP is a puzzle game, you're clearly wrong), don't play MP. If you want to stick to the linear games that require more hand-eye coordination than brain power, great. Both games are fantastic in their own right as well as terrible in their own right. However, Team Fortress 2 sucks and will always suck. (I'm also guessing you didn't finish any of the Metroid games if you're asking me if I thought any of the puzzles were clever. Considering each game is just one, long, giant puzzle... yes, I thought the puzzles were clever.)

QUOTE(CrimsonWeltall @ Nov 18, 2007 -> 03:57 AM) Portal was short, but sweet. What current team-based shooters would you consider so much better than TF2 right now? Battlefield? Quake Wars? I don't disagree that it is awkward having a game and a nearly identical port of a game sitting on the same top 10 list. Metroid Prime is worse than ANY of the 5 elements of the Orange Box. Various areas are blocked based on your progress in the game. Just because it requires a lot of backtracking doesn't make it some non-linear dynamic game full of choices for the player. 1. Halo 1,2,3. Counterstrike. Call of Duty 4 (and even probably 3). Resistance Fall of Man. Rainbow Six: Vegas. Every Socom game ever made. I could continue. TF2 is absolute crap compared to the very best of online shooters. Plus, you can go off in most of these games and do your own thing--just go around shooting people in things like "Free-For-All." TF2 is an extremely limited and tired game. 2. Metroid Prime is free roaming in that, yes, while certain parts of the map are blocked off until you solve a puzzle, every part of the map that you've unlocked is free game up until you've beaten it all.

QUOTE(CrimsonWeltall @ Nov 18, 2007 -> 03:49 AM) It wouldn't be on there because it blows. Horrendous controls, boring weapons, plenty of jumping (always a treat in first-person games), and massive amounts of tracking/backtracking through ugly, uninspired levels. The only reason anyone liked Metroid Prime was its name. It's more a puzzle game than a FPS. Graphics are overrated. I guess you don't enjoy a good, long puzzle?

QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Nov 17, 2007 -> 08:07 PM) Ever play MP? Why wouldn't it be on there? MP is the most critically acclaimed game of all-time, no doubt(Well, technically, that would be OoT according to the site, but MP had 3 times the amount of reviews). I have no doubt there is not a game out there with more of a unamimous love then there is for MP. What the developers pulled off there was, well, amazing. As for Zelda, it's not a RPG. And it's still the most heralded gaming series out there, even more so than Metroid, Final Fantasy, and Metal Gear Solid. What would you put above OoT in terms of greatest games ever? I can only think of a few acceptable answers, and a lot of those are from pre-review days. The fighting genre is one regarded as the best genre out there by the gaming media(Or at least it was throughout the 90s and early 2000s). Never played or heard much from Tekken 3, but SC is a game I have always seen in r discussions about the best games ever. No surprise it's on there. Zelda has many of the underlining tones of an RPG, most of which make up the game. About the only difference is the fighting system. And there is no way any of the Zelda's are better than say, Final Fantasy III or VII. I disagree that Zelda is at the helm of game reviewers out there. Just read reviews of all the Final Fantasy's that come out and note that, generally, in the reviews, they say something along the lines of, "Games just don't come out with a higher pedigree than the Final Fantasy series." And then they ultimately say how good it is based on the previous games--as there aren't any other games to compare it with, even very similar RPG's. The Final Fantasy series, now having 12 games and coming on 13 (which consists of 2 games for the 13th installment) has pretty much set the standard for the RPG genre...every single time they release a game. According to Famitsu, a Japanese gaming magazine, these are the top 10 games of all time as voted on by its readers: Final Fantasy X (2001) Final Fantasy VII (1997) Dragon Quest III (1988) Dragon Quest VIII (2004) Machi (1998) Final Fantasy IV (1991) Tactics Ogre (1995) Final Fantasy III (1990) Dragon Quest VII (2000) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (1998) From the Zelda series alone, I'd put two ahead of OoT. Windwaker and A Link to the Past. There are several other RPG's that I'd put ahead of any Zelda game as well, the most recent being Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.

QUOTE(CrimsonWeltall @ Nov 17, 2007 -> 08:01 PM) Half Life 2 is already on there at #10. Although I agree that HL2 is slightly overrated (and HL1 extremely overrated), the Orange Box is awesome. It isn't a remake. It's HL2, plus two-thirds of what is basically 'HL3', plus one of the most original games of the year (Portal), plus one of the best multiplayer games of the year. If you want to disqualify it for being a compilation instead of a single game, that's fine. But taken as a whole, it's pretty deserving. ...Certainly more so than Metroid Prime or Tekken 3. How are they on there? Portal took about 5 hours and wasn't anything too impressive. Team Fortress, compared to all the other multiplayer online shooters out there, is a joke--not to mention they used the same maps they had in the original Team Fortress. By remake, I meant they remade it from the PC for console gaming. Metroid Prime is far superior than any of the games on The Orange Box. Even the original Nintendo version. Free roaming gameplay > Linear gameplay... just about always.
-
QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Nov 17, 2007 -> 07:34 PM) Why wouldn't it be? At least the PC version. 360 version probably shouldn't be close to up there. Every other game there, Metroid Prime, SM64, OoT(Widely regarded as the best game in the series[And best game of all-time for that matter], although like you not my favorite), HL2, Soul Calibor, and RE4 are pretty much "the games" when you start a discussion on the best game of all-time. I think we're going to see that with Galaxy too. It's incredible. Then put Half-Life 2 in there, not The Orange Box, a s***ty-remake with some tag-on games like Team Fortress. Besides, Half-Life 2 wasn't even that good aside from the physics engine they put in. And how does a fighting game get mixed in with the best of all time? Fighting games suck in that they're extremely limited for the player. Whatever story somebody puts in a fighting game is bogged down in that, in-between fighting, there is nothing else to do. And the replay value? Okay, I'll kill the guys again on an unlocked difficulty level? The Zelda series is great, yes, but overrated. As far as RPG's go, none of the Zelda games even probably sniff the top 5 RPG's of all time. The Final Fantasy series alone probably has 3 games better than any Zelda.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 17, 2007 -> 09:52 AM) thats garbage... Zelda: Ocarina of Time is by far the best game of all time. I don't even think it's the best game in the series. That list of top 10 rated games is b.s. to begin with. I mean, The Orange Box is in there.

QUOTE(longshot7 @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 12:57 PM) You ever see LA Confidential? Also, I saw No Country for Old Men last night. I was VERY disappointed. I won't go into spoilers but the movie was as perfect as a movie can be until this one unforgivable thing happens - and it leaves such a bad taste, it ruins the rest of the movie. I predict that people will go gaga for it anyway - and it will be vastly overrated. Both Javier Bardem & Josh Brolin are terrific though. Name it with spoiler alerts around. I've seen it, I want to see what you're talking about.

QUOTE(Jenksismyb**** @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 04:20 PM) MGS is probably the new psp game. Assassins Creed is getting some great reviews. I think I'll be picking that up tomorrow. Rent it first. I bought it today, it's garbage, IMO. The "tutorial" is about an hour and a half long, and once you get into the action, you have to a bunch of "investigations" which are mundane and don't require any skill what-so-ever from the gamer (unless following an arrow on the map is considered skill) before you actually get to assassinate anyone. If you've read the IGN.com reviews, you probably know about the second character in the game. The second character is totally worthless and just a waste of time. That second character is also a pansy-ass-pretty-boy. I don't think I mentioned yet that the dialogue and writing in the game is bad. It also seems there is more storytelling than actual game playing. It's a P.O.S. game, if you ask me. I can't wait until Mass Effect comes out next Tuesday, because Assassin's Creed is going back to Gamestop.

Movies that were as good as, or better than, the book
BobDylan replied to NorthSideSox72's topic in SLaM
Oh, the movie "Adaptation" was far, far, far, superior to the book, "The Orchid Thief." Sure, it's not truly an adaptation as the movie was just Kaufman writing about his struggles to adapt the book. But it sure as hell turned out better. -

QUOTE(Iwritecode @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 10:43 AM) Also from the same book, Stand By Me. The Shinning was pretty good too although the book was a bit better IMHO. Misery comes close too. The book was a lot better. If not for Jack Nicholson's superb acting job, Kubrick's adaptation of that book is pure crap. God, I'm starting to sound like a Stephen King fan. Which I am, but not much of one. And speaking of Kubrick, his adaptation of Lolita was pretty bad too. (Though, still a decent movie.) I'd be interested to see what people say about the Coen Brothers new movie, "No Country for Old Men." I've never read the book, but damn, the movie was incredible.
