  1. I'd rather have a 5 mil/yr bust (Dye) than a 15 mil/yr bust (Ordonez). Dye won't be hitting .190 all year, he's started swinging better. Still a good signing as far as I'm concerned.
  2. QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ May 17, 2005 -> 04:10 PM) I have no problem with them using Everett in RF and Willie at DH or moving Iguchi to DH and using Willie to play 2B. That would be the best scenario, IMO. Willie has no instincts for the OF. He has the speed to play CF, but ARow actually covers more ground because of the jump he gets on the ball. Willie is a good defensive 2B, so is Iguchi. For consistency purposes, I think I'd slot Willie at DH, but if he's at 2B giving Iguchi a breather from the field, we don't lose much if anything defensively.
  3. Rowand is hitting the cover off the ball since moving to the #3 spot. I think it might make sense to move Paulie down in the order and take some pressure off. Everett could bat in the cleanup spot, with Uribe/Pierzynski 5th. Move Kong and Dye down to 6th and 7th.
  4. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ May 17, 2005 -> 06:34 AM) Actually working for Crede though. He's at least getting a hit or on base once a game if not more. Joe Crede is hitting .209 in May. Who are you watching? Konerko should sit for a day or two like Ozzie did with Dye. Not that Dye has lit it up, but he's certainly taking some better swings.
  5. Need 3 lefties in the pen. If you send down Cotts or Walker, Munoz should get the call. Not concerned about his ERA, he's got a 3:1 K/BB ratio, seems to have the best control of the AAA group. Send Vizcaino down and bring up Bajenaru. Vizcaino is useless.
  6. Garcia had no velocity last night. At least, not until he had coughed up the 5-2 lead. Then he seemed to realize he was pitching in a game. Marte is the only consistent lefty we have in the 'pen. But good lefties are hard to come by. I don't think it would hurt to try Munoz, other than using up an option. In the end, it's one game in crappy weather. The Twins are 6 games back and getting beat on by the Rangers.
  7. Daily Herald. Too many crappy articles from the idiot at Sun-Times, he hates Reinsdorf too much. Trib is owned by Cubs, enough said. Southtown can be good, although sometimes you'd almost think Reinsdorf owns them.
  8. Can't say I know the guy, and normally a 3-yr analysis is very valid. However, he made very minor reference to the fact that Mark's stats improved in '04, and have continued to improve in '05.
  9. My dad is the one that got me hooked on the White Sox. At SoxFest I got a bunch of autographs on a soxfest map, topped off by Bill Melton writing Happy Birthday to him. Now, my bar bill was upwards of $200 because I'd been feeding Bill the Ketel One while he made fun of Willie Harris at our table, but my dad got a kick out of hearing we were talking to him, he will be ecstatic at the autograph. Just whipped cream on top of what has been so far an ice cream sundae of a baseball season.
  10. Forgot about Tejada. Still think Jeter will get the votes, but yeah, Tejada has to be there.
  11. I knew I was a die hard in '93 when a buddy and I drove 6 1/2 hours from Carbondale up to see Game 2 of the playoffs (without tickets in hand, we bought from scalpers), watched the game, and drove 6 1/2 hours back to Carbondale after the game. I had season tickets in 2003 even though I live 4 hours away in Iowa.
  12. People forget the All-Star game is as much a popularity contest as anything else. Garland, Hernandez and Buerhle are all on if they continue at current pace. Hermanson, if he indeed is now our full-time closer, will be there as well, barring a collapse on his part. Iguchi will not be there unless there is an injury to Roberts or Soriano. Podsednick and Kong won't be there because their averages suck. No shortage of OFs with all-star numbers. Varitek and I-Rod/Lopez will have the C spot taken. SS will be Guillen and likely Jeter will be elected starter. Amazingly, even with our historic start, I just can't see us getting more than 4 pitchers and no position players on the team.
  13. "I don’t like the ballpark, or the uniforms. Those are just matters of pure opinion, and not things about which I’ll change my mind" Well, his analysis may suck, but at least he's closed-minded
  14. Harris is the DH tonight. Wonder if he gets to bat cleanup too.
  15. http://www.charlotteknights.com/pressbox/news/burke.html A bit old news, but Jeremy Giambi was released when Burke was reassigned to Charlotte.
  16. QUOTE(JimH @ May 12, 2005 -> 07:43 PM) Anderson isn't hitting .330 either, so before you call baloney, check the stats and check what's going on with the player. I have commented several times that he's been striking out a lot, isn't that a factor in determining readiness, especially for a player not noted for striking out a lot? My bad, he's currently at .311 with a .914 OPS. :rolly 12 BBs and 34 Ks in 119 ABs. K/AB ratio needs work, but he's taking walks, so its not like he doesn't have strike zone judgement. There's nothing there to indicate he couldn't contribute now, which is the whole point of my post. That he went 0-4 last night is entirely irrelevant to his readiness. Same with McCarthy's last outing. You have to consider performance over a period of time.
  17. Heads, where you at? I'm in Iowa City area.
  18. There seems to be a rash of judging minor leaguers based on one outing going around. First McCarthy isn't ready because he had a bad outing last time, now Anderson isn't ready because he went 0-4 last night. Hey, Jon Garland just got ripped for 6 runs in his last outing, I guess we need ship his ass to AAA. Anderson has been ripping AAA up, he's batting around .330. McCarthy just got IL Pitcher of the month. Those guys have been consistently good at every level, they could contribute now if called upon. I don't think we need Anderson right now, I think Ozuna and Timo will be fine for the week Everett may need to rest. But this baloney of labeling guys not ready because they had a bad game has to stop. EVERYONE has bad games. Mark Prior got crushed in his rehab outing at Class A. Should he still be in the minors? No.
  19. Neyer has always been an idiot. There's nothing to learn from what he writes. Ever. He reads Bill James' books, then does horrible analyses trying to use what he has read. He's also a KC fan, and his suck-ass team is in last place, and their manager just resigned. So he's probably being pissy about that. If you want to learn about sabermetrics, read Bill James. Do not read Neyer, that's stupidmetrics.
  20. QUOTE(AddisonStSox @ May 11, 2005 -> 04:30 PM) You don't "buy" the arbitration "arguement" huh? You do understand how arbitration works do you not? No, I don't buy it. And yes, I know how it works.
  21. QUOTE(JimH @ May 11, 2005 -> 04:20 PM) They are, that's why McCarthy is getting valuable experience as a starter in Charlotte at age 21. I don't mean to imply that it is bad that he is at AAA doing just that. However, I would neither agree that starting at AAA is somehow more valuable than contributing to the big club in the bullpen. There is no greater preparation for mlb hitters than pitching to mlb hitters. I merely point out that refusing to improve the ballclub because we might have to spend money 3 years later as opposed to 4 would be very wrong.
  22. QUOTE(JimH @ May 11, 2005 -> 04:16 PM) All fair points ... But I'm not sure why this is being discussed, since KW and Guillen have both said what McCarthy's role is for 2005 (step in for a starter if needed). I realize this is a message board, but Roles change. Is it likely they will bring BMac up in such a role? No. But it is a valid suggestion that merits comparison to other possibilities for strengthening the bullpen. I would even go one step farther and say it is more likely they would use him in such a role than trade for a Billy Wagner. Vizcaino and Takatsu are struggling, but we have Hermanson and Marte available for the closer role. What we need is a setup/long relief man to replace Vizcaino. Takatsu is likely to pitch setup for the rest of the year.
  23. The arbitration argument doesn't fly. You make the moves that give your team the best chance to win now and in the future. We have a golden opportunity given our start this year. If a move to improve the team was rejected because we wanted to save a couple bucks 3 years from now, it would be wrong.
  24. Well, you're welcome to your opinion on the issue, but that's what it is; an opinion. As is mine. Saying that it is wrong to bring up BMac "hands down" is ludicrous. As mentioned earlier, there are severals paths for pitchers to use to develop. Bringing up BMac now to contribute to the team in a role where he could be effective would not be "wrong". It would be a development path. As for stretching him out again, not likely. Buerhle never had to be stretched out again. More importantly, BMac would already have mlb innings under his belt if needed to move to the rotation to replace an injured/traded player. Cotts is not a comparable pitcher, Cotts' problem wasn't that he wasn't stretched out, Cotts' problem is he's a 2-pitch pitcher with mediocre command ill-fit for a rotation spot.
