QUOTE(Jabroni @ May 11, 2005 -> 02:59 AM) What team knows that they are going to make the WS or even the playoffs at the trading deadline? It's a calculated risk. We traded for Freddy Garcia before the deadline and didn't make the playoffs. You can't use hindsight to say it was a stupid move. We knew the chances of signing garcia were much greater than the chance of signing wagner ( 0 percent).

QUOTE(rangercal @ May 11, 2005 -> 12:15 AM) I still say the time to test hermanson is now.... If he proves other wise, trade for a closer. I have a good feeling dustin can come through. If he can close out games fine or not we need another reliever brought in. Both vizcaino and shingo are very not good thus far.

QUOTE(Cy Garland @ May 10, 2005 -> 11:50 PM) What happened with him? He is hitting .195 or so... but he is still getting on at nearly a .400 clip. If i was giambi i would be laughing at the yankees for how bad i suckered them.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ May 10, 2005 -> 11:33 PM) I knew it was one or the other. Vizcaino's gotta pick it up no doubt, he's been pretty immune from criticism so far (although there was the Cleveland outing). That was not the case in the game thread tonight.

QUOTE(rangercal @ May 10, 2005 -> 11:28 PM) that would take a lot of work to fake it. who knows though. The guy who faked it admitted it.

QUOTE(quickman @ May 10, 2005 -> 10:23 PM) last time I checked we were up 6-4 in the 7th. bullpen lost the game. Contraras didn't pitch well but he was out by the time we grabbed the lead. You cannot walk two in a row and then give a home run up to a teams 8 hole hitter. You have to put away those hitters expecially considering how good the devil rays have been hitting this year.
-
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ May 10, 2005 -> 10:30 PM) How many games has he lost by doing so so far?? 1. I'd take 1 out of every 6 starts any day of the week. Chances of that holding up is slim. I hope so but it is doubtful. It is a known fact the more runners you let on the greater of a chance they have to score.
-
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ May 10, 2005 -> 10:25 PM) I'm sorry, but you don't lose games by how many walks that have been given up in the game. You lose games by giving up runs. It's a proven fact. Look at the mlb.com. It'll say Runs in bold and the team with the lower amount loses. Contreras while walking people has gotten out of his jams for the most pasr this year(again, other than today). You're not going to get that out of anyone else you're going to be able to trade for. McCarthy is fairing no better with his walks in AAA. Not giving runs up while issuing walks will only last so long. He hasn't had any really bg inning but if he keeps allowing walks at this rate the big innings will come sooner rather than later. Walking players doesn't automatically lose you the game but it makes the chance of losing that much greater.
-
QUOTE(quickman @ May 10, 2005 -> 10:15 PM) despite contraras tonight, the bullpen lost this game, same as last night. Two quick lead-off walks then a home run to their eight hole hitter? That plays into the loss as much as anything else in my opinion.

QUOTE(sayitanitso @ May 10, 2005 -> 10:11 PM) I wouldn't want to if the player is only going to be here for the rest of the season then leave after its done to test free agency( i think huffs contract is done after this season). If the player we got was staying 3+ years then it would be less painless. No.

QUOTE(JimH @ May 10, 2005 -> 10:09 PM) If Hermanson is your closer, which I agree with, then Guillen held him in reserve for a possible closing situation. I know what you're saying, but the manager holds the closer in reserve for a possible closing situation ... and we are crucifying that???? Isn't the bigger issue this: Contreras is a wild card in terms of his control, Shingo is not the pitcher he was last year, they need to figure out this closer situation once and for all? Note: I think we all saw who the closer is. It's Hermanson, seeing as he didn't pitch the 9th. This is a May game vs. Tampa Bay, it's not the 5th game of a playoff series. I am not crucifying that. I am saying in general i think it would be the smarter thing to do. A few managers do that and it seems to work out just fine. I think we need to bring in a studly closer as do many others... and it doesn't have to be wagner because i think we will have to vastly over pay for his services considering he will not be brought back. I also hope contreras some how puts together a pretty good season so that we can trade him off in the off-season.

QUOTE(fathom @ May 10, 2005 -> 10:07 PM) Am I the only one who would like to see Uribe batting 3rd right now? He's our best hitter, and he's the most likely person to be able to knock in Pods if he steals 2nd base, etc. Everett isn't getting the job done right now. Bat widger third.
-
QUOTE(sayitanitso @ May 10, 2005 -> 10:06 PM) I agree as long as we don't give any of our good prospects in a trade. You have to trade some good talent to get talent in return. This is not mvp baseball.
-
QUOTE(C_LEE45 @ May 10, 2005 -> 09:57 PM) JR this team is in good shape NOw lets not let this get away go out and get us a BIG BAT NOW,iam tired of the so so player like J Dye ,Crazy Carl go out and get a SUPERSTAR hitter, like Abreu,Aubrey Huff or even Carl Crawford. Also i HOPE we seen the last of dingo Takatsu and iam ready for Mcarthy too, so its time KW tobring Mcarthy up and trade Dingo and conteras for a hitter Abreu you is too expensive. Huff is gonna be very expensive prospect wise. Crawford just signed a long term deal which means he is basically goinng no where. The most likely fit out of those three would be huff by a long shot.

QUOTE(JimH @ May 10, 2005 -> 09:59 PM) So then Shingo is your closer? No. At this point hermanson is. I wanted hermanson to start the 9th whether we were tied or had the league. Hermanson gives us the better chance to extend the game in my opinion and that is what we were looking for at that point in time. Worry about closing out the game once you get the lead, not before hand.
-
QUOTE(JimH @ May 10, 2005 -> 09:55 PM) Tough to argue with your logic, given the result. Let's look at it this way ... Suppose you have Hermanson go the 9th and 10th and let's say for sake of argument the White Sox push one across in the 11th. You have Shingo, Politte, and Walker left in the pen. Logic says you go with Shingo, so now your closer (Hermanson) isn't closing out the game ... Shingo is. Shingo was not out there in a save situation. Maybe Politte instead of Shingo in the 9th, maybe. Who gives us the better chance of extending the game to the 11th inning at this point? I would have taken my chances with hermanson in the 9th over shingo and i was pissed when i saw shingo coming out.
-
QUOTE(JimH @ May 10, 2005 -> 09:49 PM) That's great, I tend to agree. It was not a save situation in the 9th. I want our stopper out there in a tight game. Especially considering he can go multiple innings. Doesn't make sense to put out arguably one of our worst relievers at this point in a tied game in the 9th inning.
-
QUOTE(JimH @ May 10, 2005 -> 09:44 PM) Yes I agree. Cotts was the best and he gave up the big double to a left handed hitter. Everyone did not perform to expectations. Vizcaino should have faced the lefty. Vicaino can get lefties out and cotts, well, not so much.
