Im goin to the game tomorrow and I need some help figuring this thing out. Lets say the bears beat the Texans and Packers and finished the season 10-6. Lets also say the Vikings beat the Giants, who have nothing to play for, at home next week. They both finish 10-6, went 1-1 against each other, and went 4-2 against their division. So then what? What is the tiebreaker?

Red Sox and Angels NOT signing Mark Teixeira
joeynach replied to MHizzle85's topic in The Diamond Club
Personally I dont think the angels want to commit 8 years and 180M abouts to Texeria or anyone. They seem to be a little more fiscally responsible. They seems like a team that more or less doesnt like going past 90-100M contracts. -
I dont want Taveras at all, we already have the same player in Owens. Taveras cant hit and has a terrible OBP thats why he is being non-tendered. Not really the guys u look to pick up to build a team.

I see your point, we definatly do not have the rotation, as of now, to compete for the pennant or World Series. We do have a solid front 3, but that too usually fails to win a competitive division when all said and done. Im sure KW is planning something. Most likely 1 minor leaguer will be in the rototation. As for the other spot I imagine its penicled in via trade or FA, though there isnt much I would want from the market that isn't demanding at least 5 years 80 mil.

Its a good deal for the Tigers. Especially since all they gave up was their version of Jeremy Reed or Ryan Sweeney. I would take Jackson and plug him into 45h or 5th in rotation and see if he could develop some control and command. I know hes a bit hit or miss, but hes got great stuff. As far as I am concerned just in terms of talent (not production) its a steal for the Tigers.

http://www.reuters.com/article/ousiv/idUSTRE4B62A620081207 Yikes the Tribune Co is said to be close to bankruptcy, this is not a good thing. I dont really care how it effects the cubs and what not, but to have such a large local firm in trouble like this is not good. People's jobs as well as the iconic Chicago media outlet are at stake. What would happen if there was no more 720AM, Ch 9, Chicago Tribune, etc.

Players arent going to get their demands this year, with this economy. Furcal wanted 4/52 and only recieved offers in the 4/35-40 range. Hudson wont get 40 or 50 mil. Hes most likely looking at 3/24 or 4/36 tops.

I wouldnt do this deal unless Im getting at least Gallardo back...if not Gallardo + Hart, which would probably require some throw in on our part...Broadway, Richard, etc? Then trading Dye is not a big deal which you would use to get back some of the young pitcher(s) u traded away with Jenks., Dye for Edwin Jackson being ideal. At the point our rotation would be primed with young quality rather proven arms poised to compete for several years to come.

QUOTE (SEALgep @ Dec 4, 2008 -> 10:41 PM) I'd like for the Sox to pony up to get Sheets. Risky? Sure, but nice upside. That would really make the rotation look like a strength again. Um are u serious. The white sox dont sign pitchers for more than 3 years, with the exception of Buehrle. No Sheets, no Sabathia, no top FA pitcher...ever.

AJP defense in general is just poor. Hes not the sox starting catcher b/c his defense. The guy can hit pretty well and is fundamentally sound. Hes a good game caller and works well with our staff and Coop, he is well liked for his work ethic. The point is he will make $ and be ur starter as long as the positives outweigh the negtives, and they do. Its really hard to find the perfect offensive and defensive catcher who calls good games, there are only so many Maur's and Martin's out there. AJP is not a top catcher but he is by no means below average at all.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 2, 2008 -> 09:54 PM) With the Braves' new "mid market" financial mindset and Vazquez's "arguably unreasonable" contract to be a 4th starter...I think we're looking pretty good with this deal. It was obvious we had to get rid of Swisher and Vazquez, along with Cabrera, Crede and Uribe. Our roster is already 20% different and we're just getting started. The question is whether we cut deeper and deal Dye and/or Jenks. U know whats gonna happen. Vazquez is still gonna be his some old afraid to pitch like a man self, but his #s will look better pitching in the NL and his home park is now one of the most pitcher friendly parks out there. Not to mention he gets all those vaunted NL lineups he will have to face; Pit, Cin, Fla, Was, Sdg, Sfo, Col, Az...yeah u get the picture.

I like the idea that we are getting some exciting prospects here, re-loading the farm, and didnt really have to give up any core players or fan favorites. Swish and Vazquez were basically disappointing players and by no means are crucial pieces to the puzzle. Vazquez ability to eat innings will be missed, but hopefully the sox can find another 200+ IP guy with an ERA lower than 4.67 who can beat teams other than the Royals and A's. As the roster currently stands this team does not look remotely like a pennant contender, but it doesn't quite look like an all out firesale/rebuild either. Also it appears that the sox now currently have some payroll flexibility to round out the roster for this year, if KW is so inclined. I guess the point I am try to make is that I like the fact the KW has rid this team of essentially dead weight. While it trims some payroll, not the biggest of contract committals, it still leaves the the team rather competitive, but adds a base of future talent as well. We will see where KW goes from here, but its worth noting that Thome and Dye both come off books after 09. See the trend here.

7:42pm: O'Brien believes Chicago's return to be Flowers, Lillibridge, third baseman Jon Gilmore, and pitcher Santos Rodriguez. 7:05pm: MLB.com's Mark Bowman says the White Sox will actually receive four players in the deal. They'll choose from a list of five, with Flowers and Lillibridge their top targets.

QUOTE (sircaffey @ Nov 20, 2008 -> 07:25 PM) Well some, like myself, would argue that 2B is a bigger hole than 3B. Betemit > Getz, imo. So if you had to start one, I'd rather it be Betemit. Plus, what Roberts would do to this lineup would be well worth the chance. Not to mention the 2 draft picks at the end of the year. I do like the idea of getting the draft picks.

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Nov 20, 2008 -> 06:39 PM) I actually think the O's will lower there demands for Roberts finally. Its going into the last year of his deal, the team has no reason to keep him around when obviously the Rays, Yanks and Red Sox own that division. Clayton Richard, Marquez and Getz or Fields should be enough to bring him over. He is basically a 1 year stop gap (and a hell of one at that). He would give us that leadoff hitter we desperatley need as well. I think you can count us out of the Orlando Hudson sweepstakes. This move just doesn't make sense for the Sox with the direction they are headed. The Angels are not giving up there reliable leadoff hitter for Paul Konerko- plus where would that leave us for 1b options? Crisp is overrated. Im glad he is no longer available. The best fit for 2009 is obviously Roberts. Its up to Baltamore to finally cut ties with 'there hero' I wouldn't trade fields unless I know im signing Casey Blake or a legit 3B. Wilson Betemit does not do it for me. Whats the point of getting Roberts for 1 year to leave a huge hole at 3B that could be the sox Achilles heel in 09.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 15, 2008 -> 02:00 PM) http://www.isfauthority.com/images/35thStr...erings-2of2.jpg http://www.isfauthority.com/images/35thStr...erings-1of2.jpg There are doors where the current offices are. Maybe they will put the restaurant/bar and gift shop there. That looks good but doesnt add up to what we have seen in the past. I heard from my friend who works for the sox that the restaurant/bar stuff we have seen has not yet been approved for construction nor finalized in any way. In fact when I showed him what I found he was like where did you find that. Seems like what we see above is step 1 of the improvement process. The restaurants/bars area is most likely then for the 2010 season since we know its still in prelimnary design phase. That being said the new ramp structure outside Gate 5 looks like an important step in creating this new area, it clears the space for the construction and allows ppl to enter and exit through 1 point, the way u would want it if you were going to get them into new shops and bars etc.

I would only look at Wood if we traded Jenks, hes not worth the draftpick we would have to give up to acquire him as a mere set up man. Hes basically the same type of pitcher as Dotel and we are already on the books for his 6 Mil or whatever.

QUOTE (SoxFan562004 @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 04:57 PM) He will likely fall back into his 06 and 07 numbers playing 1st base with the NYY A .250 hitting infielder with 25 Hrs...ok great

I am absolutely dumb founded by this trade. It looks like a salary dump, yet Swish makes no real $. We didn't even get a prospect on the yanks top 10. WTF is this, there better be more to it.

Some more names that might make sense to KW
joeynach replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
I know we have a rather larger payroll and thats a finally nice thing to see, but aside from Torii Hunter last year we are never linked to any big name free agents. Im starting to get sick of always having linkages to players that are cheap, old, rebounding from injury, looking for a change of scenery, in someone else doghouse, coming off disappointing years, etc. Im not saying we need 150 Mil payroll like red sox, we should be totally competitive with a payroll around 100 Mil, but come on. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 11, 2008 -> 08:13 PM) Because they would ask for more than Fields...probably Fields AND Poreda, in order for this deal to go down. Kenny would counter with Fields AND Broadway/Richard, but they wouldn't bite in all likelihood. The memories are still too fresh about Borchard/Thornton and Morse/Reed/Olivo for Garcia. We've absolutely hosed them the last two trades. I think they will be much more hesitant a third time around....they're not super-desperate to trade him, he's well liked by the organization and his teammates. Those are sunk costs, I doubt a GM would take that into account in doing whats currently best for his team.

QUOTE (sircaffey @ Nov 10, 2008 -> 07:31 PM) I'd make a call to the Pirates about Capps. I think he's about ready to take a step up the closer rung. The pirates would be willing to trade Capps, but only if he does or is on the verge of making real money. If hes cheap no matter good or bad the pirates will keep him.

Greene sucks stay away.

Beltran makes 18.5 Mil in 09, 10, and 11 then becomes a free agent. He also has a full no trade clause. Plus I dont even want Beltran all the much. Hes a good run producer but why should we take on 55.5 Mil for 3 years for a guy that hits about .275-.280 with 30 Hrs. Thats basically Dye's career averages. If we trade Jenks and Vazquez I want Reyes at least.
