Despite the fact that the sox are able to spin next weeks discount ticket prices for the angels series off as "Mark Buehrle appreciation series", they finally seem to be getting it. Tickets for the weekday series against the angels are going to be discounted, Upper Reserved reduced from $23 to $9, Lower Reserved reduced from $38 to $27, and Bleachers from $38 to $27. The sox are saying the $9 price if for Marks perfect 9 innings, and the $27 is for his perfect 27 outs, nice PR spin there. Basically we all know how they botched the weekday series against the Dodgers by charging Prime prices for tickets and drawing lowly crowds in the low 20,000s, so this is an effort to avoid the same scenario. Which is actually really nice to see the sox being proactive and actually doing something about their previous poor decisions with weekday prime prices. Its so much better to get fans in the ballpark buying concessions, parking, souvenirs, etc. Im happy to see the effort being made!

QUOTE (EvilJester99 @ Jul 31, 2009 -> 03:55 PM) IIRC you can trade a player on the DL if the commissioner approves it.... BIG loophole then huh -

I like the deal but I have a couple questions. Are the padres eating any salary or not? I thought u couldnt trade a player on the DL? Also we should make a quick poll just to see who is liking and who is not. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 29, 2009 -> 05:08 PM) We had a thread yesterday saying he had a sore back. ahhh ok thanks gents
-
Is there something wrong with Thome, nothing has been said but he is out of the lineup 3 games in a row now. Seems kind of odd considering nothing has been said or mentioned.
-
Ive said it a million times...Josh has proven over and over again he cant play at the major league level, he doesn't belong here. His defense is poor and he cant cover a major league fastball. See ya.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 27, 2009 -> 10:48 AM) He won't sign before the end of the season, that's guaranteed. His agent is Boras, that's the way they roll. You want to extend him now, you offer him 10/$250. Otherwise he's hitting the FA market. The Sox should have a legitimate shot at him if they're really interested. The question is...how much do you offer a guy who's been as inconsistent, esp. in the AL, as Holliday was this year? Do you offer enough to beat what other teams might offer? Based on the last 2 years of reduced numbers and his age of 29, I'm not sure I go beyond like 3/36, and I think that's the kind of offer someone else would beat. I don't like spending stupid money, and I think someone offering him a lot would be tantamount to paying stupid money. yeah when u say stupid $$ comes to mind you remind me of JD Drew. An obvious players who should be something like 4/36 who is getting 5/70. Dumb!

So our pitchers for this series goes Danks, Buehrle, and then Colon. My question is does anything think that having two similar throwing lefties pitch back to back is bad thing, especially for Buehrle. Is there any sort of disadvantage for Buehrle having the twins hitters basically see similar style pitching the night before. Would it always make more sense to break them up and go Left/Righty? Is there anything to be said for this theory at all? Game 1: Danks/Perkins Game 2: Buehrle/Baker Game 3: Colon/Liriano

QUOTE (maggsmaggs @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 03:47 PM) I am fairly confident, one of them will be back, maybe both. Of course, at reduced rates likely. But it's not like we really have better alternatives in the minors nor are there much better options in free agency. You would hope that one would be willing to be the DH again at maybe $5 million, giving the Sox some more money to add to the club in free agency. Yeah im pretty sure Jermain Dye is going to be back. They have an option on him. Im not sure if he will be the RF or the DH. I guess if he is the RF then they could easily bring back Thome for DH at some sort of reduced price. Dye has been a beast this year, well except for the last week or so where he has started to pull off the ball a little and roll over. He looks a little pull happy right now and has been making a ton of outs on the ground to 3B and SS. But nonetheless hes still a producer.

QUOTE (Chet Lemon @ Jul 26, 2009 -> 12:16 PM) I have read many hypothetical/speculative trades involving Dotel from all types of sources. Why would the Sox want to move him this year? Linebrink has been disappointing. Pena has not pitched well at all this year. Jenks' WHIP is rising. Second to Thornton and maybe DJ, I think Dotel is one we need this year. I think out of necissity we dont lose dotel. Plus he seems headed to be a type a free agent so we would get a draft pick for losing him at the end of the year.

Black Jack McDowell on tonight's loss and closers
joeynach replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Whats intersting to me is that both nites where he pitched like garbage I noticed one thing. I strong reluctance to just throw hard fastballs. Id say a majority of his pitches were some sort of change, slider, or cutter. I rarely saw him just try and throw a hard well located fastball. My initial gut feeling was that they must have a scouting reports on Rays hitters that say they sit mainly fastball, or jenks and the staff feels like they have more trouble with other pitches. But the problem is if thats the case that takes Jenks away from his bread and butter. Im not really here to suggest there is velocity issue again with Bobby cuz his heater is really about 93-95 mph. It was his lack of willingness to throw it, and throw it for strikes which was disturbing. Im not sure what the case is, but the fact he doesn't trust that pitch as a closer/couldn't locate it is a little dis-heartening. Maybe he is going through some injury, maybe he was coached on no throwing fastballs to their hitters....I dont know. Either way its all awfully strange. -
Its too bad they could just find a way to dump fields or just demote him, thats the guy who belongs in AAA the most. I mean seriously its freaking obvious for years now that Josh Fields cant hit a major league fastball. He belongs either out of baseball or in the minors getting at bats on how to hit stuff over 89 MPH.
-
I can only see him moving to 2B or SS, I dont really care which on Alexi plays, if the sox acquire or sign some established 3B. Someone outside the organization, but u know that if they dont feel that player is out for them then Beckham is your man at 3B next year as well.
-
Well good luck to him and his wife, I hope the days hes gone we have blowout wins and his services are not needed.
-
Can he replace Josh "I cant hit a fastball" Fields? Pleasseeeee??

QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Jul 9, 2009 -> 03:17 PM) The only thing about Poreda is that he still does not have a passable enough of a change to be a starter. See him once and he's tough to face, see him twice and he's not so bad, see him three times in a game and he's throwing BP I agree with that completely. I wouldnt take him out of the BP just yet. When Colon is ready he will start.

One time I actually took a dump on the plane.....thats like forbidden yo!!

U say the economy is bad and its going to be tough for you to draw fans. So you go ahead and raise ticket prices, especially for a weekday mid june series. Then it turns out attendance is actually down....HMMMMM....how about...LOOK IN THE DAMN MIRROR!!!

QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Jul 5, 2009 -> 07:23 PM) Jones is Baltimore's lone representative. Zobrist has had a pretty good season, so Maddon almost has to take him over the competition. Granderson - you got me there. JD has to be in over Granderson; there's really no excuse. Mind boggling
-
Someone please explain to me how .308/12/46 = Jones .286/16/44 = Zobrist .256/18/34 = Granderson are all better than .291/20/51 = Dye Seriously I dont see the logic. I thought the ASG was to select the best players, period! How is Curtis Granderson's .256BA even come close to an all star game, thats just embarrassing. And how does Ben "who the hell are you" Zobrest make the team with those eh not bad numbers. I mean seriously is this some kind of joke. Are these the best players or is someone trying to be nice to someone, this is Major League Baseball...not little leagues. It should be "your the best you go, your not you dont, u want to go, then get better" DONE

QUOTE (letsgoarow @ Jul 4, 2009 -> 04:26 PM) He hasn't left the golden corral except to go to the bathroom, and grab a snack at taco bell. That reminds me of a story I heard out of cubs spring training a couple years ago where they couldnt find or get ahold of Daryle Ward apparently when they were about to have a game. Turns out he was like down the street eating a taco bell. Lol

Seriously what the hell is up with this guy. He wasn't pitching that awful, I believe his ERA was around 4. Then all of a sudden he goes to the DL with swelling in his knee. Since then I have heard absolutely nothing about him or his situation. Anyone got anything?
