  1. Does making a weekday series including one afternoon game on a thursday all Premium priced games have anything to do with it. You bet your ass it does. Nice move by the sox, especially in a week economy to price fans away from coming to typical low attended weekday games to begin with.
  2. Someone please tell him that when he dumps the Cecil Fielder like wind up in his swing like he is going to crush ever ball out of the park then he can speak. Until then he is simply a poor defender, pull happy, occasional homer hitting, low batting avg, below average Major league baseball player. PERIOD!!
  3. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jun 1, 2009 -> 11:53 PM) All of Josh's mechanics are messed up. What I noticed tonight was that his load and step are completely out of whack. The basic way of hitting and generating some of the power in your swing is to have a nice balanced swing where your hands go back and you turn your hips while you step forward. While Josh is stepping forward, he is only doing that hitch thing. His hands don't move back and he doesn't turn his hips while his foot is in the air, all he's doing is that hitch where he brings his hands up. By the time he steps down and his foot is on the ground, he then brings his hands back and turns his hips. So, at the time he is suppossed to be coming forward, he's just starting his load, with his foot already being on the ground. All of his mechanics are f***ed up. It's a pity too, cause there's no doubt he's got the tools. I also don't care about him finishing up with 1 hand. I've never believed that really affected your swing. Think about, when you make contact with the ball, it doesn't matter what your swing looks like at the end. You gotta focus on getting that bat through the zone with some velocity and putting a charge in the ball. Whether you finish up with 1 hand or 2 hands on the bat, all that matters is what your swing looks like when you make contact with the ball. EDIT: After re-watching Josh's swing several times in slow-mo, I've changed my original paragraph. BINGO BINGO BINGO. And if this is something easy for us fans watching on TV to see...well then. Where is the discussion on this from Stoney, or Farmer. Where is the discussion on this from Scott Merkin, Cowley, or any other reporters. Why does this seem to be something only we on this board are noticing, its freaking obvious. Fields needs to learn and practice, not strikeout over 200 times this year and be given an automatic shot again next year. The guy needs a lot of help its obvious. The swing clutch, the inability to hit anything 90+ MPH or belt high, the man simply does not belong as a starting players for any MLB team. Homers, Hits, anything that he does aside is all a band-aid on the problem. Poor mechanics and Poor approach will kill his career, dont let a week or two fool you, this guy has a lot of work to do (not at the ML level), before he should even be considered an everyday player.
  4. Anyone else pretty disgusted with Josh Fields' swing mechanics....I mean wow does this guy look like the epidemy of the go back to the minors to work on it type guy or what. I mean not only can he never hit any fastball above 90 MPH...PERIOD, but his little stupid clutch/hitch before he swings is pathetic. Its like the worst part of a swing I have ever seen. Then of course he cant hit anything thigh high or above, becuase well lets face it, the damn swing clutch slows him down. Then you see his right hand, fly off the bat as he wraps his bat around his body with his follow through with only 1 hand. Seriously, WTF is wrong with this guy. He seems like the exact opposite of the type of hitter Ozzie and KW have been preaching for years now. Honestly, go away Josh Fields it looks like you have a lot to work on in the minors still! I cant be the only one who sees this.
  5. When Fields decides to modify his swing and get rid of that ridiculous hitch/clutch motion then he will finally realize his potential. Until then he will continue to have trouble catching up to 90+ MPH fastballs, strikeout a ton, and be lucky to continue his nice .237 avg. Its that simple.
  6. QUOTE (whitesox32 @ May 11, 2009 -> 12:48 AM) Good to see Bobby defend his teammates but still even if you did throw it with intention DON'T ADMIT IT! Sometime you do, like when its gotten real out of hand with our guys getting hit. Someone needs to stand up and come right and say it and do it. Enough said
  7. This team is carrying 07 style dead weight, just not major players at all. 07: Pods Erstad Mackowiak Andy Gonzalez Luis Terrero Alex Cintron Danny Richar 09: Pods Wise Lillibridge Betemit Nix Contreras (sorry to say it)
  8. A couple things I think would make the field look better and would be quite simple; paint the Sox logo on grass behind home plate (like the Yanks, Tigers, etc have), and place brick facade around the backstop between the batters boxes. I think both would really add to the look and feel of the park, both live and on tv.
  9. Finally...ive been asking, waiting, and yearning for a real scoreboard for some time now. I really like the one they put in Cleveland and Toronto a few years ago and was hoping the sox would make this minor but impactful change.
  10. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 24, 2009 -> 10:12 AM) I just realized that my above description could actually apply to two different cities. Either one would be a good choice. Albuquerque and Santa Fe, New Mexico. I also think Salt Lake City might work as well as New Orleans (made more sense before Katrina).
  11. Maybe its not so much about Ticket Sales as it is about Sponsorships and Corporate Spending (outings, conferences, etc). After all the populations of these AL Central Cities isn't that small. You are still talking about finding 30,000+ ppl to go see a ballgame in cities that have millions in population. If you have a quality team in a pennant race you will get ur 30-40K fans per game. At that point its more about the media, sponsorships, corporate events, skybox reservations, etc. Just look at the metro populations of AL Central cities....as long as the team is good they should still draw. Chicago - 9.5M Detroit - 4.5M Cleveland - 2M Minneapolis - 3.2M Kansas City - 2M
  12. Well I made my own spreadsheet and for 2009 were at $95 MIL. That doesn't include buyouts, signing bonus or our backup catchers salary. I did plug in all Pre-Arb figures as 400K. I think its pretty accurate. So if we add signing bonus, back catcher @ 400K, and buyouts that probably an extra $2mil. So lets say we go opening day at $97 Mil. My last years figure not including signing bonus or buyouts for opening day was $117 Mil. The sox have trimmed about $20M from their payroll or about 17%. That makes sense considering the lack of sponsorship revenue and the rumor flying around that Kenny might have been as much as $10M over last year. The interesting thing about all this is that if u remember the message boards circa 2002-2005 there was tons of payroll talk. JR not spending, big market vs. small market, sox are cheap, blah blah. The sox payroll in their championship year in 05 was $75M. Its funny to think that now we are in a down year and our payroll is gonna be close to $100M. Really shows how far we have come in the last 5 years, there is no arguement now, the White Sox are a large market franchise.
  13. Money. KW had to get the team payroll down, looks like about 15-20 mil. There is very little room for an increase in talent with a cost cutting offseason. Im not saying the cost cutting isn't necessary either. From what I heard KW was over budget last year and with the economy most teams are projection at least 20% drop off in Revenue from last year. So it only makes sense that KW has taken the payroll from like $115 last year to $95 this year. While at the same time got rid of some roster dead weight and added some youth/speed. It more less translates into a transition year. The good news is some teams have transition years and fall off the map and shed 40 mil in payroll, like the padres and rockies. The sox are in a transition year and still have some serious talent and a $95 mil payroll. True this off season defiantly did not add any considerable upgrade to the roster and revenue for team (and all teams) most likely will be down considerably. But the sox are positioned better to replace age with youth and speed for next several years and begin to phase out the dinosaur sluggers, by which you usually dont add $10M plus veterans to ur team. Thats basically it in a nutshell. The good news is no one else really did anything significant either (outside the yanks) given the on avg about 20-25% decrease in leisure spending.
  14. Anyone have a problem with the sox signing Ben Broussard to a minor league deal. I think its fine, its just an insurance in case PK goes on the DL for a while at some point.
  15. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Feb 3, 2009 -> 10:23 PM) I believe estimates were in the 1.75 to 2 million range. Check your books on the World Series im sure its in there.
  16. Broadway should come no where near the 25 man roster., PERIOD!!
  17. QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Jan 21, 2009 -> 08:23 PM) as of right now, the back up is guna be someone from the minors right? none of them can hit. that is disappointing. i guess we really dont have money to spend lol Yeah Im pretty pissed the sox couldn't get Blanco for the 1 year 750K he signed with the Padres for. He is exactly what we needed.
  18. pretty freaking stupid. The sox stadium is gonna look pathetic if they go into the season with a knocked down ramp and a half constructed new entrance in place.
  19. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Dec 25, 2008 -> 04:20 AM) Ever go to the "O" in Oakland? That place thinks their known for hot dogs, but they really just suck. Yeah I have and it does totally suck.
  20. QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Dec 25, 2008 -> 04:36 AM) Were you watching Man Vs. Food tonight too? Yea
  21. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Dec 25, 2008 -> 04:53 AM) Whoa! Dude, thank you very much for sharing that!!! I saw food shows featuring Primanti Bros. and I've always wanted to go there. In fact, I was just talking to a friend about taking a road trip to Pennsylvania for it. I don't mind going to a place similar right here in Chicago, even if it's at Wrigleyville. I just saved the address on my phone, and I'm gonna try and go there sometime in the spring or summer on a day off. Since it's Wriglyville, I just GOTTA wear one of my personalized Sox jerseys, which one should I wear? The white home jersey? Grey away? Or the black alternate jersey? Also, if you don't mind me asking, what's the best way to get there? I'm from the south suburbs (Orland Park) and the only train I'm familiar with is the regular metra train that ends at Union Station downtown. I'm not too familiar with the L-train routes, so when I get off the train at Union station, which L-train should I get on? The red line? Yes walk to state street and get on the Red Line heading north (to howard). Get off at addison station and walk west to clark then make a left on clark and walk south a couple blocks. Should be right there.
  22. I go to grad school at the University of Pittsburgh and when I got out there I had never had the famous sandwiches from Primanti Bros. They are really freaking good if you have never had them before. They put the meat, coleslaw, and fries, all on the big french puffy bread...all served hot off the grill. Then I come to realize there is a copycat place, essentially identical right here in Chicago. There is a place in wrigleyville called Lucky's, right on Clark St just a little south of Wrigley. Its seriously identical, menu, food, prices, style, etc. Dont know if this is a patent issue, not sure if you can patent a style of food or method for preparing food, but if you have ever heard of Primanti Bros from Pitt just know that you can find the same thing here in Chicago. 3427 N Clark St.
  23. QUOTE (WHITESOXRANDY @ Dec 24, 2008 -> 06:07 PM) Chris Coste. I completely agree. I was hoping the Sox would get him when they signed Toby Hall. Coste would be perfect for the Sox. And, he'd come as cheap as anyone. Synder is getting an extension from the Dbacks. I wonder why we haven't heard anything about the sox making an offer to Henry Blanco at this point.
  24. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Dec 24, 2008 -> 07:06 PM) Lewis is a good player and I'd have no problem with the Sox trading for him, but I doubt the Giants have any interest in dealing him, seeing as how they are pretty much in a full blown rebuilding. And Anderson would play CF on any team that he's on if he's starting. That's where all of his value is. Latest headline on MLBtraderumors.com, "Angels Standing Pat With Current Outfield". It even says they are going to let Garett Anderson walk, so why on earth would they then go after Dye, a very similar player in terms of age and production. Dye and PK both aren't going anywhere unless we are 15 games out at the break and some NL team is desperate.
