QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 1, 2014 -> 09:18 AM) This thread is about future payroll obligations. Sale and Q are signed to very team friendly contracts. Future obligations aren't very high. If a couple of these younger guys pan out, there should be plenty to spend on guys better than the Felipe Paulinos of the world. We already know there is plenty now or they wouldn't have risked Tanaka saying yes. I don't understand the idea of waiting around for middling pitching prospects to develop and wasting Chris Sale.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 07:35 PM) Because it's really hard to do. Scherzer is about the only one that fits that description. It's really hard to win a World Series too. You have to break a few eggs to make an omlet.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 07:34 PM) 2 big time free agents. Like Shields and a lefty bat, and this team is in contention for years. That would bring the payroll obligation up. Sure you wouldn't rather find the next Paulino? LOL

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 07:38 PM) Shame, I thought we'd wind up picking up the options on Sale and Quintana. I'll be sorry to see them released. I guess you don't understand the meaning of obligation.

2015 $46M 2016 $41M 2017 $30M 2018 $22M 2019 $14M A Scherzer, Shields, or Lester makes a lot of sense if the offense proves to be the best in the division.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 06:13 PM) Or just get Marty to admit that Jose Quintana is already a #2 starter. Why are you so adverse to adding a pitcher better than Quintana.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 04:57 PM) Out of the available options who would be plausible? Is there another big time Japanese starter maybe available next fall? If not, particularly from the RH side, it's Scherzer at $200 million, Lester at maybe a similar amount although that makes no sense as he's a lefty, or perhaps Shields at a slightly lower amount. But of course, if you actually look at his numbers, Quintana in his early to now mid 20's is only a tiny step behind what the veteran James Shields has done the last couple years, and so if you take into account you're getting his aged 33-37ish seasons, you're unlikely to get a better pitcher than Quintana over that deal. So in order to sign someone better than Quintana this offseason, it's either a Japanese pitcher I don't know about who becomes available, or it's Scherzer. Plan B it is then, sign a #3, trade for a top starting prospect to pair with the #3 pick.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 04:53 PM) If something comes up, what choice to they have? It isn't about being dumb, it is about reality. Look here is what they were looking at for today. Quintana -pitched yesterday- out Rienzo- pitched two days ago- out Carroll - pitched three days ago - out Danks - pitched four days ago, could he have gone on short rest? probably not after throwing 123 pitches in last outing- out Sale- DL, not eligible - out Paulino- DL, no eligible - out Johnson- sent down Saturday, can't come up for 10 days after send down without a DL spot being used - out Leesman- sent down April 23, means he can't pitch in majors again until something like May 2 or 3 unless a DL spot is being used - out Axelrod- Not on 40 man roster, needs someone to be waived to activate. Also started April 28 - out Surkamp- started four days ago, could have been called up to start on short rest, but is sporting the nifty .404 BAA and 6.00 ERA in Charlotte, plus a sexy WHIP of over 2.00- Um, pass. Duente Heath- Not on 40 man roster, has made one start this whole year, going 5 IP. Tommy Hanson- Slot did fall in line with opening, but has only made two starts this year, going a total of 9 IP in those two starts. Also not on 40 man roster, meaning someone else needed to be moved to get him to Chicago. So now I ask, what is the not dumb move there? DL'ing Paulino.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 04:33 PM) I can think of about 150 million reasons. You thought the Tanaka bid was a sham, huh?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 30, 2014 -> 04:21 PM) Still on this schtick no matter how many times you've been called out for it I see. What's the problem with signing a pitcher better than Q.?

QUOTE (TRU @ Apr 29, 2014 -> 05:01 PM) Paulino is absolutely a lost cause. Hes never been good, one outlier year that he ended up with a mid 4 era, everything else is putrid and having any faith that he was going to come in here with a year layoff and be useful was foolish thinking. No one should be jumping the gun on Johnson, but he was awful up here to start the year. No reason to think he cant get it together. Paulino on the other hand, he has no business seeing the active roster again. It's going to be interesting to see how they assemble the rotation over the next couple of years. Outside of Johnson, there's nothing in the minors. Do they sign a top free agent, slot him at #2, Q at #3 or take a longer-term approach by signing a FA at #3, deal for a top pitching prospect and pair that guy with who they take in the draft.

Will Sox be buyers, not sellers, at the trade deadline?

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 09:58 PM) Right but they aren't old. They'll be there next year, and probably better. Rather than gamble on on Jimenez/Santana, give up a draft pick and sink tens of millions into what so far has amounted to a 50/50 shot at being good (Santana solid, Jimenez disaster), they see what they actually need for next year. Going into the year, there was reason to believe their SP prospects could have been ready. Hindsight is 20/20, but there was too much uncertainty to gamble the future. They have such little pitching depth and such payroll flexibility that there's little chance that a free agent starter was gambling with the future. Putting stress on Sale to cover for a tired bullpen is really gambling the future. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 06:23 PM) Outside of Santana and Jimenez, what could they really have done? I was hoping for someone like Hammel, but Paulino was their choice for a cheaper lottery ticket. Don't get me wrong though, I was hoping for a swing man like Capuano given the lack of pitching depth in the organization. Anything, but what they did. Putting as much stress on Sale's outings as they did was just asking for trouble. First reason to get a starter was to protect Sale and Quintana, next was if the offense is turned around they could compete in a weak division. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 06:17 PM) Yeah, but that was clearly by design. To be honest, I don't think the Sox could afford losing such a big portion of their fan base if they went into a Theo-Cubs style rebuild. I have no problem with getting players that are so close to the majors, as it's not like the Sox have had a good history of developing hitters that spend a long time in their system. I have no problem with the older core, but they should have done something on the pitching side in case they were right about the offense. They could end up missing a golden opportunity. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 06:15 PM) Well I assert it's a younger core and since you can't be bothered to do antyhing other than repeat your reply, I win. Winning these things appears to be important to mods. Have at it my friend. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 28, 2014 -> 06:09 PM) How on Earth could anyone write that as though it's true? Sale 25 Abreu 27 Gillaspie 26 Garcia 22 Viciedo 25 Eaton 25 Quintana 25 Davidson 23 Flowers 28 Phegley 26 Nieto 24 Semien 23 Webb 24 Petricka 25 Jones 28 The White Sox literally have 1 guy who will be over the age of 30 in 2 years and still under contract: John Danks. In 2 years Jones will be 30 and so will Flowers. If they're all held onto (not likely) that's 3 guys who might actually be on the back side of their careers 2 years from now. That's an older core for a rebuild. Putting it another way, they are further along their development cycle than typical rebuilds. -
I bet the Sox think a sore Hoffman is still better than dealing with Boras.

As I said this winter, this is an older core by rebuilding standards and they have to hit the ground running. Thankfully, they've done that. Too bad the Sox didn't address the pitching situation in a serious manner. -
Abreu didn't hit his first homer until his 25th AB was it?
-
If I were Jeff Manto, I'd leave the names Flowers and Viciedo off the resume.
-
Terrific baserunning by Beckham leads to a run.
-
It's too bad they didn't spend some money on the pitching staff because this offense might just be the real deal.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 27, 2014 -> 02:20 PM) Don't really buy that either. 8 years ago we had our manager regularly joking about hiding from the giant rats every time he went to Wrigley, and hell, the fact that the Trib owned the Cubs gave Sox fans a regular reason to complain about unfair coverage. I don't think changing the amateur free agent signing rules went unnoticed by the Cubs.
