QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 11:10 AM) Hanging out with the sign Ubaldo Jimenez crowd. I'll take my chances with Jimenez.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 10:49 AM) I 100% agree that our starting pitching depth was overrated by some here. However, I think most of those posters used that "depth" as reason behind not signing a mediocre free agent starter, which is still the right call for us. Tanaka made sense for us, guys like Santana did not. Regardless, hitting on this #3 pick will be crucial for the long-term well being for our rotation. A $50M investment in another starter would have provided stability in the rotation without any downside (if he's bad, he's bad.)

I think Beck was referred to by the 7 starter crowd. I don't recall Axelrod being mentioned.

I think the nightmare scenario for the Sox is Hoffman gone and Rodon still on the board. They very well may like one of those HS arms more than Rodon, but given their way of rebuilding how could the pass on Rodon? They'd get a ton of heat.

QUOTE (SCCWS @ Apr 19, 2014 -> 10:12 AM) I found it strange at the time that before spring training the article that ran about Paulino being ahead of Rienzo. Obviously some combination of Hahn, Coop and Robin were already ticketing him to be the 5th starter. Then the results of spring training did not change that opinion. Either some combination of that group totally missed the boat or the other 5th starter candidates are really not legit. If the next in line are really weak, Hahn should have acquired another arm over the winter in case a starter went down to injury or totally flopped. Considering Johnson and Paulino had a limited resume of recent MLB success and Danks had some questions surrounding him, another arm should have been added via trade or FA. This is exactly right. I believe the reason that Paulino was ahead of Rienzo this spring is because they spent $2M on Paulino.

Where's the we have 7 starters crowd? We still have two weeks left in April and we're down to 4.

QUOTE (scs787 @ Apr 18, 2014 -> 08:39 PM) Is Leury available today?? I'd throw him out there again, f*** it. Already gave up when you let Paulino take it on the chin. I think this is Leury's day to thrown on the side so he should be available.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 18, 2014 -> 08:33 PM) He has been in the majors for 3 weeks. You don't have to be sold on him, but I don't see how you can write him off already. Not writing him off, but . . . don't think he'll be the "monster" some thought.

Worse signing than paying $4M for a month of Manny

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 18, 2014 -> 08:22 PM) Yes, his bullpen signings suck so far, but neither of those guys were gonna be around for the next Sox playoff team anyway. Eaton, Abreu, Davison are the offseason transactions that matter. Not the makeshift bullpen on a losing Club. You're ok with Abreu?
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 18, 2014 -> 08:16 PM) But the lottery ticket fifth starter ruins the entire offseason. Hey, if you got an agenda, gotta stick with it all the way. Downs, Bellisario.

QUOTE (Big Hurtin @ Apr 18, 2014 -> 08:15 PM) Who was the last Sox starter who was this bad consistently? I honestly can't remember. Navarro?
-
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 18, 2014 -> 08:10 PM) Totally. That young leadoff hitter he traded for and first basemen he signed are so awful. Not sold on either one of them yet.

Early returns on Hahn's offseason pretty bad.
-
how did Hahn miss Fielder's gut when he was putting together our pen.

Nice write up on Rodon can't vouche for the source This quote from the article is great, but it reads like Boras' negotiating stance: Rodon's mechanics nag me, don't like his follow through seems like it would put a lot of stress on his arm. Video

16k's for Hoffman through 8. Trainer and manager came out in the 7th, but Hoffman waved them away before they got to the mound. Hoffman can really repeat his delivery. Broadcast says KW is there.
-
Watching the Hoffman game, he looks really good 11 k's in 5. Thing is, the defense playing behind him is as brutal as that one scout said. Don't put much stock in his mediocre numbers, this guy looks the part of a top-of-the-rotation starter, imo.

Kolek's kind of velocity at that age raises the TJ surgery red flag to me. With all the advancements with that surgery, Tommy John the guy who first had it done, still holds the record for wins after surgery.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 17, 2014 -> 09:05 AM) To me, Hawkins being a legit top prospect again would be the comeback of the year. It would go a long way in making up for the bad luck with the Garcia injury. Hawkins still looks out of sorts to me on the video I've seen, not as bad as last year though.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Apr 16, 2014 -> 12:08 PM) US Celluar is the most easily accessible stadium in Chicago and has the best ammenities. There are no neighborhood places to go after Bears, Bulls or Blackhawk games. Metra built a stop for the White Sox and usage was so low they discontinued the post game train and run nothing special for the White Sox except possibly on Opening Day. White Sox fans could be among the worst in sports. So what.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 16, 2014 -> 09:28 AM) So why haven't the Bulls,Bears, and Blackhawks taken a hit? Because Baseball depends on the average Joe to fill its seats more than the other sports (you left out the Cubs.) Not too mention the Hawks you know winning big.
-
If the Sox had another starter I'm pretty certain they could hang with KC. If Detroit regresses who knows. Leyland's a smart guy when it comes to knowing when to walk away . . .
-
Good write up. I just want Rodon off the board when the Sox pick. Don't want to deal with that Boras factor along with his uneven performance this year.

QUOTE (Bruce_Blixton @ Apr 15, 2014 -> 10:07 AM) I know most people are expecting the Sox to take a pitcher at #3 but if both Kolek and Aiken are off the board at that point I'd like them to take a hard look at Alex Jackson. High school position players are always a boom or bust proposition but this kid looks like a monster in waiting. and . The main thing I notice is how quiet his stance and swing is, he takes a shallow stride but is still able to generate huge power. He reminds me a lot of a right-handed Joey Votto. Jackson looks really good, put him in RF and let his bat carry him to the majors. I'd rank the draft for the Sox this way: 1. Hoffman 2. Aiken 3. Rodon 4. Jackson 5. Kolek 6. Beede If the Sox don't deal with Boras for Rodon (can't blame them) Jackson becomes a more viable option I think. I could see them reaching for Beede though.
