  1. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 11:54 AM) Your theories on cores and payroll point to nothing but a constant roster rollover with no way to sustain success. All you do is continue to take the finish line and move it back in order to justify what you want them to do with the money that you have earmarked for spending. This is why I barely get involved with any argument you lead. It isn't worth my(or anyone else for that matter) time to discuss something that you will change your mind on in 3 months. Or 3 minutes. This is the reason you should stay out of these conversations. Roster rollover with no way to sustain success means exactly what?
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 11:08 AM) If the money being spent makes them competitive that year, yes. Otherwise the money spent that year would be equally well served being lit on fire. It's better to sign a guy a year or two early when the team is rebuilding than to wait because 1.) it's cheaper, 2.) the core will be a year or two younger when that contract rolls off the books.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 10:44 AM) From the guy advocating spending all possible resources on free agents this year. Isn't the best time to spend money when the team has a young core.
  4. QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 10:49 AM) Why? He's running a profitable business. He doesn't owe you anything. You're absolutely right.
  5. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 10:06 AM) I felt it was safe to assume when you didn't respond to post #408 To the contrary, that "All In" was executed poorly, another half-measure.
  6. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 10:02 AM) But you're against spending money on risky free agent signings now, because Adam Dunn. What do they need more revenue for? When did I say that?
  7. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 09:39 AM) And everyone else gets the reality that you can't spend money you don't have. As I outlined the other day, a few of Marty's recommendations would have the team over $200 million in payroll this year. Chairman Reinsdorf should sell the team if he can't figure out a way to grow revenues.
  8. QUOTE (flavum @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 09:19 AM) If Beckham starts on the DL, Semien will probably start at 2B. SP- Sale, Paulino, Quintana, Johnson, Danks BP- Webb, Cleto, Veal, Downs, Lindstrom, Belisario, Jones OF- Viciedo, De Aza, Eaton, Garcia IF- Gillaspie, Ramirez, Garcia, Semien, Dunn, Abreu, Konerko C- Flowers, Nieto DL- Keppinger, Beckham To be cut- Purcey, Putnam, Gimenez, Tekotte, M Johnson, Liddi Seeing it broken down like this, that is one ugly roster. On a positive note, it's a good thing that bullpen won't see a lot of leads.
  9. QUOTE (beautox @ Mar 26, 2014 -> 04:52 AM) Thats why I'm a firm believer we go after Rasmus for CF this offseason or Despainge if he defects defects. Both fit our age and competivness curve. As for C I still think Hahn will eventually make push for Grandal. As for DH if Dayan perfoms this year we're in good shape if not and we start out semi hot I would love to see the sox pursue Morales. It would be kinda funny if the sox continued to foster a very pro cuban lineup with the possible inclusions of despainge, grandal and morales. I don't think the Sox will win a bidding war for Rasmus and after that there is very little of use in terms of free agent position players. My guess is the Sox max offer to a free agent would be 5y/$75M. I think one of Shields, Masterson, or Josh Johnson signs with them most likely for less than that figure.
  10. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 10:02 PM) Revenue? Do you mean payroll? If so, are you honestly still b****ing about Reinsdorf not spending more than he takes in? I'm sorry, but it's not like we're dealing with a Loria type owner here. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the Sox make a profit most years, but I seriously doubt it's anything of significance. I'm guessing most sports ownership groups operate in a similar fashion, so I'm not exactly sure what your beef is. You basically sound like a whiny little entitled brat by going on about this relentlessly. Can you please just give it a f***ing rest and stop derailing every thread? I mean revenue.
  11. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 09:57 PM) That's because no one thought it was a stupid move. And popular opinion was wrong. (Fangraphs too.)
  12. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 09:45 PM) No one is against spending money. EVERYONE is against making stupid moves in free agency. Not true. The reaction to the Dunn signing was decidedly pro around here.
  13. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 09:25 PM) Everyone looks like a Reinsdorf apologist when arguing with irrational Reinsdorf rants. This does not explain SS2K5's posts against spending any money.
  14. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 09:14 PM) Pfft, reality is overrated anyway. You are such a Reinsdorf apologist.
  15. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 08:36 PM) Baseball needs more GM's like you for Rick Hahn to trade with. Trading cheap #3 cost control starters, to acquire full price #2 starters? Awesome. You act like the Sox are a small market team. We've been over this, but there are no laws limiting revenue.
  16. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 05:47 PM) Yes, but my point is that I don't see why we need to trade him to get a better pitcher. We're going to need a good #3 also. This is where you try to sign someone or deal prospects, and that's a 2015-16 problem. This year we need to see if (1) we can depend on a Danks bounceback and (2) we have mid or back-end guys in Johnson and Rienzo going forward. Because the value of an established #2 starter, should one become available, is going to be prohibitive and if you take Quintana off the table, we likely wouldn't have enough.
  17. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 02:31 PM) Yet you're the only one in the thread that thinks it matters. The rest of us understand that he's likely about a 3 win pitcher (assuming health) being paid like a castoff free agent, and that is super useful to any team. If the Sox find themselves in a situation where they need their second best starter to be better than Quintana, his contract extension should make him a valuable commodity in that pursuit. That would fall under your "super useful to any team" criteria, no?
  18. I'll be there, if anyone wants t meet let me know.
  19. QUOTE (Charlie Haeger's Knuckles @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 01:33 PM) bolded above = plausible deniability. If that's the case, the only time in his career that MARK BUEHRLE was any thing more than "a #2 starter" was in 2001 and in 2007. 2013 Jose Quintana >>>>>> every year of Buehrle's career EXCEPT 2001 and in 2007. Everyone LOVES Mark Buehrle, including me. But somehow the year the Sox let him walk, they backfill the rotation with not one, but TWO lefthanded starting pitchers that ARE better than Buerhle - with both having ceilings to be even better than they currently are. Go Sox. I'm not the only one in this thread that isn't sure that Quintana is a #2 on a playoff team.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 12:59 PM) So you're saying Jose Quintana, who pitched like a #2 starter last year, in his 2nd season, isn't done developing yet? Awesome. So we have our #1 and #2 rotation pitchers signed for 5+ years and have no immediate need for anything but back-end starters. I don't know that Quintana is a #2 on a playoff team.
  21. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Mar 25, 2014 -> 11:46 AM) I don't necessarily believe that Quintana is a #2 starter, but frankly, a mid-rotation starter doesn't put them over the top and they have a lot of younger or cheaper pitchers that they want to see pitch. You can't do that if you bring in said pitcher, and it stunts the development of those other pitchers. It's likely going to take at least 2 full major league seasons for these pitchers to develop even if they are good. Anyone after Johnson we're talking 2017, just too long to wait when you have money.
  22. QUOTE (southside hitman @ Mar 24, 2014 -> 08:20 PM) For the sake of the argument, let's assume Q "settles in as a #3," which I am not agreeing to. But if he's a #3 starter, why in the world would you trade a #3 starter with a very team friendly contract for a slightly better pitcher and throw one of our top pitching prospects??? If Johnson slides in at #3 and you trade Beck who would be our #4 and #5 in that scenario? Hahn gave Q this contract because he is going to pitching with Sale at the top of our rotation for a long time. He's not going anywhere. If they were sold on Quintana as a #2 why didn't they pick up a mid-rotation starter this year in free agency? My thought is they either trade for another top-of-the-rotation starter or Quintana proves to be a #2 and they sign a mid-rotation free agent.
  23. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Mar 24, 2014 -> 09:24 AM) He is so bad. He had to roll over and ground out to SS at least 100 times last year. I can't recall a Sox player who made as many soft outs as Keppinger did last year.
  24. Several of you have asked, in a dispatch from The Ultimate Champion he requested that I pass along that he thinks this was an awesome extension.
