Tyler Flowers is your 2014 starting catcher

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 06:16 PM) Which is why you don't take massive gambles that have high risks of ruining your franchise for five years. Like paying 32+ year old, injury-prone free agents $15-25m per year because of their successful "track records." You can lose that way, or you can lose rebuilding, but some how losing and rebuilding (not spending money) is a victory to some. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 04:59 PM) Which of these 3 numbers do you think is a more accurate prediction of what Andy Wilkins would do in the big leagues if called up right now: his .380 OBP at Birmingham in the first half of 2013, his .312 OBP at Charlotte in the 2nd half of 2013, or the .350 average OBP over the entire season? His .350 OBP is closer to his true talent than his .312. -

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 04:59 PM) Then again if they had followed your advice last year, they would be figuring out how to handle not only Adam Dunn's contract, but also Greinke and Hamilton. Forget about [hewhoshallnotbenamed] or [hewhoshallnotbesigned]. You win some, you lose some. -

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 03:27 PM) Are you here just to alienate people ? You're definitely not a Sox fan. You seem so miserable ,like you have all the answers and you can't comprehend why the Sox don't do things your way. I do have all the answers many of them are even right. I strongly disagree with some of the ways the White Sox are currently conducting business and apparently it rubs some the wrong way. -
QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 04:38 PM) Interesting how you point the finger at others but do not want it pointed back at you. Most adults grow out of childish behavior such as this, makes me wonder about your age. I did not point the finger at Balta. He directed a personal attack at me which I responded to.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 04:30 PM) So how did you do in the prediction game last year? No comment.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 04:16 PM) No. However, you don't understand how baseball works. You see, there are different levels in baseball. There is such a thing known as "minor leagues" where a combination of young players and guys who aren't good enough to play in the big leagues play baseball games during the year. A typical baseball organization will have 6-7 different levels including 1 big league team and 5-6 "minor league teams". These minor league teams are given different names based on their skill levels. The lowest level teams are Rookie ball and "A" ball. At higher levels are AA and AAA ball. Guys who perform well at one level will often move up to a more difficult level. Thus, if you see a guy like Andy Wilkins who puts up a .380+ OBP at AA ball and .312 at AAA during the same season...those numbers should be broken apart because the 2nd number was performed against higher level talent. You should attempt to familiarize yourself with how minor league systems are structured before commenting. Very few people who are at AA ball and perform worse during their first visit to AAA ball will immediately start playing better in the big leagues than they did at AAA ball. Major league baseball talent is much, much better than AAA level talent and MUCH MUCH better than AA level talent. Therefore you should not project that a guy who put up a .312 OBP at AAA will put up a .350 OBP at a big league level until he takes a step forward at AAA. This is fantastic progress. Why it was just this time last year that you predicted the 2013 White Sox to WIN 90+ games. Gold Star for you.

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 04:10 PM) He'll get his chance soon enough. Have some faith, Hahn is smart. With most teams money is usually an overriding factor in roster decisions and playing time. By any measure, the Sox do not have to be one of those teams at the moment. They are doing it by choice and coming off a 99-loss season, it's the wrong thing to do.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 04:09 PM) Andy Wilkins's OBP at Charlotte was .312. I see his overall OBP as .353, is that incorrect?
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 04:05 PM) Which is why he should be playing every day at Charlotte to see if his value going forward can be turned into something non-zero. And any situation that has a 1b jumping from putting up a .735 OPS at Charlotte to starting at the big leagues is a bald-faced attempt to screw up the team and the player long-term. Wilkins is 24 y.o. whether he was on the OD day roster or is brought up in July, it's immaterial to his development.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 03:59 PM) It's very rare that high school pitchers go in either of the first 2 picks let alone both. The bust factor is just too high for that amount of money. One of the first 2 picks will be one of the college pitchers. I agree with this. Wonder how far guys like Rodon or Hoffman fall.
-
QUOTE (Vance Law @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 03:54 PM) I was kinda joking, pointing out that numbers put up in an extremely insignificant number of at bats in March in Arizona are meaningless. Andy Wilkins has half a season of AAA under his belt where he put up a .735 OPS. Adam Dunn is 4th in MLB in home runs over the last 2 seasons. Wilkins has more value to this team going forward than Dunn does.
-
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 03:57 PM) That's one of the pillars of rebuilding. We clearly have very different ideas about what that word means. I don't think the patience will be long with Adam, if he gets out of the gate slowly. Pillars, no, but you don't think this team has room for a 24 y.o. left-handed hitter that put up a .350 obp last year?
-
QUOTE (DirtySox @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 03:38 PM) I'd wager that Rodon will demand 1-1 money even at if selected 3rd. Boras is his advisor and he has the option to return to school for his senior year a la Appel if he so wishes. No wonder Hahn was talking Rodon up during the broadcast Friday. Down to Hoffman or Beede.

How much $$ will we get for Dunn when we inevitably trade hi
Marty34 replied to Vance Law's topic in Pale Hose Talk
The Sox will shake a couple million out of the Rays or Pirates and having him on the roster this year will be declared worthwhile, sadly. -
QUOTE (Vance Law @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 03:22 PM) What about Andy Wilkins? I hear ya, but his fate has been sealed for a bit now it seems. I get the Konerko re-signing, but this roster a week before the opener is a mess for a team that is rebuilding. Guys like Danks and Wilkins are guys they should be finding AB's for. Instead they want to keep Dunn in an attempt to save an insignificant amount of dollars.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 02:11 PM) Excuse me do you have to take it so literally ? Give it a rest . I know talents like Trout come along very rarely but he's big and fast and an outfielder with big upside. He's the cloest thing we have to Trout so he is OUR Trout. Our Trout is a bootleg version by comparison then. Typical White Sox. -

QUOTE (staxx @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 01:53 PM) I don't think that he was implying he had Mike Trout potential. I think he was trying to make the point that Garcia can be a franchise-changer for the white sox in the way that Trout did for the Angels. Obviously not on the same level, but still significant. I don't know that Garcia can be a franchise-changing player. Best speed/power position player prospect since Ray Durham. -
QUOTE (GreenSox @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 11:36 AM) Do yall really believe that Danks has suddenly become an excellent hitter? I hope so, but the chances are remote. Still, he could do an okay job, certainly enough to warrant trading of De Aza, if someone offered something decent. Boggs was a disaster. Great that his contract wasn't guaranteed. The thing is Dunn has got to go. Piddling around hoping he's good enough so that someone picks up a couple million of his salary is pointless, but that's what we've come to expect with the White Sox

QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 08:45 AM) For what its worth, yesterday during the Sox/Giants broadcast, Hawks was very critical of taking a high school pitcher in the first round of a draft. Maybe it has changed in recent years (it probably has), but Hawk has been a pretty reliable mouthpiece for this outfit. I doubt they take a HS pitcher at #3.

Danks did not deserve to be sent down. Hopefully, two of Dunn, De Aza, and Viciedo are gone in the next week.

QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Mar 23, 2014 -> 09:36 AM) You didn't mention Avisail . But of course you have to mention him weather you like him or not . And I know you don't . You have to admit he has a s***load of upside. He's big strong and fast . He is the our Mike Trout. He has that much potential. Yeah, yeah yeah... O swing schmo swing. Trying not to be dismissive of your concerns since you make every effort to be fair in your arguments. But geez if you're gonna point out every potential flaw in every prospects repetoire it gets tedious . Will he ever realize that huge potential ? I don't know but it will be fun and frustrating watching. Garcia does not have Mike Trout potential. He's an interesting prospect, and we've had so few position players like him in recent years that I can understand the excitement, but he is nowhere near Mike Trout. -

QUOTE (StRoostifer @ Mar 22, 2014 -> 04:19 PM) I will happily answer your question once you've answered the two questions I have already asked twice. Otherwise I'm done with attempting to have a discussion with someone that only wants to point out or in some cases even make up things to complain about. Your question can't be answered. I only know that (according to reports) the Sox were looking for Major League ready prospects in their trades. -

QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Mar 22, 2014 -> 03:43 PM) We're on the same page on nearly all of this. Our dispute is regarding the "sense of urgency" you seem to think we're lacking, myself believing they've shown plenty of it, just not wanting to cross the line from urgency into "all-in" style desperation. Hahn's trying to build something more sustainable, but still very quickly in the grand scheme of rebuilds. We both believe Sale gives us a much better chance in a short series - that's one of the main reasons I'm in the camp of not trading him. Maybe you'll feel better about it after JR ponies up to fill the remaining holes next offseason - I really think that's the general "plan". This year is about building the system, short (Davidson), medium (the draft), and long-term (LA 16 y.o.'s), to augment a competitive 25 man, while evaluating needs and seeing what can be gained in trades of those that don't fit the profile, or are deemed redundant. And midseason moves (I'll predict a JCastro, Grandal, or GSanchez acquisition) could bring us a lot closer to the finish line. I think the short-term road map to a World Series for the Sox is having the most dominating starter (Sale) in the playoffs. I think it is extremely risky to try to build something sustainable around him given the length of time it will take because of the general fragility of pitching. I probably would feel differently if he wasn't locked into an amazingly team-friendly deal, but the worse case scenario for this franchise is he gets hurt during the rebuild. If we are waiting on Beck, Bassit, etc, we could be dangerously close to frittering away one of the best assets in MLB today - Chris Sale and his contract.
