QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 10:16 PM) Meanwhile, you don't need to be tea-leaf reader to know why Hamels is appearing on many more teams' radar, and big markets are staying clear of ZG. Did you see the articles last week? Which makes Greinke perfect for the Sox because they can't compete with any other team's farm systems.
-
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 10:09 PM) You are aware that he's pitched in 5 consecutive post-seasons? A real shrinking violet that Hamels is. But does he have the desire to pitch in Chicago?
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 10:05 PM) Much more than Greinke, yes. I think you are dead wrong.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 10:01 PM) No way, way too expensive and hasn't pitched nearly as well this season. I really don't see how the Sox add these huge contracts to their payroll the next few year. Then a 3-month rental is perfect.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 09:58 PM) So let me get this straight. You want to trade for someone who we're not even sure has desire right now to pitch in a pennant race or in a city or media market like Chicago? You're just going to force him to pitch for the White Sox? Then you're going to not only trade away our future and give the guy $100-110 million? Have you lost your mind? When this whole thing blows up, are you going to blame KW? Please repeat after me...at this moment, I, Marty34, will never hold KW responsible for any Zack Greinke trade going completely awry and setting the franchise back for half a decade. I, Marty34, realize that when there's nobody hitting homers for the White Sox in 2014-15-16, I will have myself to blame for the completely punchless offense. Are you sure Hamels has the desire to pitch in Chicago during a pennant race?
-
What about Cliff Lee as a compromise to Grinke and Hamels? He's at $75M over the next 3 years.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 09:48 PM) Unless you're his personal doctor and know Zack well, sticking him into the heat of a pennant race in Chicago might be the worst thing for him. You don't gamble away Viciedo, Jones, Mitchell, etc., for that type of risk. Sure, Hamels. But nobody else. This social anxiety disorder is something that could flare up at any moment, just like Hamilton's drug problems. I, for one, am not willing to mortgage the future of the franchise on it. Not without a ton of DUE DILIGENCE on it, and even then, I would only do it if I had solutions for the bullpen issues. When the future of the franchise is Viciedo, Jones, Mitchell, it's ok to mortgage it.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 09:40 PM) I wouldn't do it for Greinke. I would for Hamels. Then I'd offer him a lot of money to stay. Pair him with Sale, Quintana and Peavy, and you have an awfully good chance at beating the Rangers...more so than with Viciedo. Next year, you see where the cards fall....if you can sign Hamels and Peavy wants to stay, you tell him you'll bring him back on a 2/$20. If he has problems with that, you let him walk. Do it for either Hamels or Greinke. Cliff Lee for that matter.

QUOTE (Carter224 @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 09:34 PM) If they want any chance of capitalizing on the lead we have now, and hopefully staying there, they need to make a move like that.. We cant sit back and say "Hey we got all these rookies and are in first, this will surely be sustained!" Not only that, but you absolutely have to capitalize on the season Chris Sale is having. Get to the postseason, back him up with Peavy and Greinke and take your chances. When the alternative is having a 30 homer LF'er on a team struggling for third place in its division, it's a no-brainer.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 09:25 PM) I think we all accept he's not a 2 ERA pitcher, but he seems like he could be a solid #4/5 for cheap for years to come. With the way Greinke has pitched of late, who's to say Greinke will pitch better the rest of the way than Q? Fathom, you sound pretty optimistic on the next 3 years or so for the Sox. What are you basing that on?
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 09:01 PM) Trading Viciedo for someone who's only a rental would be just a terrible idea. Look at the contracts being thrown around for Hamels and Greinke. 20 million dollars...yeah right, Sox won't be offering that. Do you think the Sox will have a better chance to win a World Series in the next three years with Viciedo than they have at this very moment. If the answer is anything other than yes you can't keep him.

QUOTE (Springfield SoxFan @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 08:47 PM) Wish we could be after Septimo's performance tonight, I think Thornton is here to stay. Probably. After this game, it's best to deal Viciedo for the rotation upgrade and Jones for pen help. Of course, you'd have to add sweetners, maybe even Quintana, but you have to do it at this point.
-
QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 08:47 PM) The same people saying that having so many rookie pen arms proves that the farm system doesn't suck are the same clamoring for the veteran in the 8th. Ain't that the truth.
-
QUOTE (GoodAsGould @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 08:36 PM) He left a guy who is our lefty specialist in against 3 lefties and everyone is screaming bloody murder lol.... the fault isn't on Robin it's on Septimo who needs to be demoted. Agreed. For all we know they are trying to decide about dealing Thornton (Yankees rumor.)
-
QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 08:07 PM) Our resident fan of Cubans. I take offense to this comment. Ethnicity has nothing to do with it.
-
Viciedo needs a platoon partner.
-
Coop has fixed Axelrod. Was only a matter of time.
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 07:17 PM) The thought crossed my mind, but I can't see KW trading our only dependable left-handed reliever. I could see it being Nate Jones, if KW thinks he can turn around and acquire a veteran RH reliever. Betances was the Yankees' #3 prospect heading into the year, and despite his struggles, would be a very good trade chip for us. If the choice is Thornton or Viciedo, to shore up the starters you have deal Thornton and worry about his replacement later.
-
QUOTE (Melissa1334 @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 07:09 PM) can we afford to lose him? meaning i dont have that much faith in him but hes a lot better than any other lefty we have. Well, they have to give something to get that starter and I'm sure Bentaces would be flipped for that purpose. Pick up another lefty reliever (Mujares. KC?) after you get the starting staff settled.
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 06:56 PM) Apparently the beat-writer for the Yankee's AA team. He has another tweet that says the Sox have scouted Betances' last three starts. Looks like he was just sent down to AA after struggling in AAA and has had exactly three starts for them. This rumor is somewhat interesting. Thornton maybe?
-
Axelrod is a good candidate to have go away for three years trying to refine a knuckler. It's his only hope.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 06:30 PM) Well, he pitched in relief on Friday night. Sox are treating him like he has a rubber arm even though he's shown no evidence of being able to handle the extra work load. He hasn't shown he can handle any workload.
-
1 run an inning might not win this game.
-
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 05:28 PM) Because clearly, he's keeping us from winning now. Might as well keep Axelrod in the rotation then.
-
QUOTE (Stan Bahnsen @ Jul 16, 2012 -> 05:26 PM) Bad one's, yes. Considering that Dunn, Konerko and Rios will either be gone or declining at that juncture, we will clearly need his power bat. Or we could just win with Ozzieball. Why do you need his power bat in '15 when there won't be anything around him.
