  1. QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ May 16, 2012 -> 05:47 PM) But what rotation doesn't have similar concerns? Tell me this, how many AL rotations would take over the Sox? I'd put the Sox 6-7th. Mediocre.
  2. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 16, 2012 -> 05:40 PM) No, I'm wondering which White Sox players you actually enjoy as players. I'm guessing Konerko has a shot because KW had nothing to do with his aquisition, but other than that................. Why do you guess that?
  3. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 16, 2012 -> 05:40 PM) No, I'm wondering which White Sox players you actually enjoy as players. List changes pitch-to-pitch.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 16, 2012 -> 05:30 PM) Who do you like on the White Sox? I haven't met any White Sox players, Dick.
  5. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ May 16, 2012 -> 03:59 PM) No. Do your magical prognostications? EDIT: And I'm hardly a numbers guy. I'm definitely in the bottom third here of SABR knowledge/belief. But if you're going to make nonsense claims like the Sox rotation is mediocre and Dunn isn't a 3-hitter, you should be able to support them with something other than your musings. I guess concerns over Danks and Humber's performances and Sale's elbow are just musings.
  6. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 16, 2012 -> 01:00 PM) 1. The beauty of that though, is that if you can bracket Dunn with 2 righties who are hitting (Konerko counts, Beckham doesn't) and you have De Aza leading off, then you're going to either get your #2 hitter facing a lefty, your #4 hitter facing a lefty, or you're going to destroy a team's entire bullpen in one inning. The only reason this isn't working right now is that all 3 of our options for the #2 slot have been terrible. 2. So, if the White Sox came inot this season with so many question marks in their rotation, you'd therefore agree that this year must be considered a rebuilding year? After all, you've got a journeyman #5 starter who you said can't be counted on and a rookie #4 with a tired elbow since he was in the bullpen last year. 1.) Many (most?) AL teams carry 7 relievers, so you're not going to destroy a pen by bringing in 2 pitchers for Dunn/Konerko in a key situation. The other thing with Dunn, he K's so much that you want him hitting in DP situations, not with a guy on third and less than 2 outs. De Aza gets on steals 2nd, moves to third on an ground out that's where you dont want Dunn up. Don't mistake the fact that even though I don't think Dunn is a 3 hitter that I don't think he's the best option right now. He is, but this lineup is one quality bat short. 2.) If it is a rebuilding year then KW screwed the pooch by giving our worst pitcher the most money, right?
  7. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ May 16, 2012 -> 11:04 AM) Dear Lord, what website do you think you're on? This is Soxtalk, not some message board where you get to say illogical things and then not back them up. I want numbers! Just a few regarding the rotation for you: Starter WAR is best in the AL, QS percentage is 2nd best in AL, 3rd most IP in the AL. I haven't found an easy way of comparing 3-hitters (that's for people who are better at fangraphs than I am), but I guarantee you Dunn is amongst the leaders. It's nice that you have opinions, it would be nicer if you could back them up with anything substantive. You numbers guys kill me. Do your numbers tell me how the Sox starters will fare from here on out?
  8. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 16, 2012 -> 07:57 AM) Can you give any actual reason why we should believe you other than repeating it and hoping you're not challenged on it? I figured this was self-explanatory. 1. I don't believe Dunn is a 3 hitter because of his radical splits. 7-9th innings, sometimes 6th he can be nutralized by a lefty matchup. 2. Humber and Danks can't be counted on to fill heir respective roles in the rotation and of course Sale with the creeky elbow. Adds up to mediocre SP..
  9. QUOTE (Jake @ May 15, 2012 -> 10:42 PM) This is asinine. Our rotation is more than solid. Our 3/4 hitters are both having career years. ADA is shaping up to be a great, young CF'er that is under contract for nothing. 3B is by far the largest need, followed by second base. Hopefully Dayan Viciedo makes LF not a need any longer, maybe Beckham could take care of 2B as well (maybe not). Just as De Aza isn't a CF'er Dunn isn't a #3 hitter and certainly isn't any long-term solution. As far as SP goes I think we're closer to mediocre than to being solid.
  10. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 15, 2012 -> 09:01 PM) I did not use the word "here" in that post yet you quoted it as though I did. Sorry. No one in this thread agrees with me.
  11. As far as team needs go, my order would be: 1.) top of rotation starter 2.) #3 hitter 3.) mid rotation starter 4.) CF'er/3B (tie)
  12. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 15, 2012 -> 08:55 PM) You keep saying that, no one agrees with you, people pepper you with numbers, you ignore them and repeat what you said before as if no one made any points in disagreement. By "here", you mean this thread? Yes, no one in this thread agrees with me.
  13. Rios is a better CF'er than De Aza. The White Sox would be a better team switching Rios to CF and De Aza to RF. The beauty of this move is it costs no money and blocks no prospects.
  14. Looking at that group of prospects bunched from 12 down, looks like a minefield. Not sure you wouldn't get just as good of a prospect picking 30th as you would 13th. Maybe it wouldn't be so crazy to go off the board and take take someone like Trehan at 13.
  15. I'll preface this by saying that I don't follow the draft as closely as many, but I don't understand Deven Marrero as the 14th best prospect available. I get that he's a very good defensive SS by all accounts, but I don't see him being able to hit. Is him being the 14th best prospect in the draft reflective of this being a bad draft? As an aside I hope Max Fried falls to the Sox.
  16. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ May 15, 2012 -> 06:29 PM) That's a good bet for anybody, and has nothing to do with your contention that we should move him to a corner platoon role for no reason. Of course there's a reason. He's a poor CF'er.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ May 15, 2012 -> 05:12 PM) Then again outside of a couple of players that is truth for all. True.
  18. QUOTE (fathom @ May 15, 2012 -> 04:56 PM) Hate to ask this, but did it look gone off the bat? Hit it too high. RF'er had it all the way.
  19. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 15, 2012 -> 05:04 PM) If he doesn't get hurt, I'd say they're very good. Guys don't drop off when they hit 32, they may slowly start to tail downwards after that age, but there's no brick wall, and there's plenty of hitters who learn more as they go on and keep getting better. His speed may be weakening by 32 and pushing him towards a corner OF spot, but the kid is flat out hitting, and that doesn't just vanish outside of big contract guys who shift to the AL. I say odds are less than 50/50 De Aza is on the team in 4 years.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 15, 2012 -> 05:01 PM) Then why does his age have anything to do with anything? What are the chances he continues to hit at 32?
  21. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 15, 2012 -> 04:58 PM) Just like everyone else who isn't guaranteed a ton of money, if you don't perform, you wind up doing something else. I know, KW acquired him so he has to suck. Everyone sucks. Why even play the games. Your reply was "Captain Obvious". If he continues to hit he'll be on the team when he's 32.
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 15, 2012 -> 04:57 PM) Then thankfully it doesn't cost us anything to remove him. What kind of silly statement is that? It was in reply to Dick Allen's silly statement.
  23. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ May 15, 2012 -> 04:48 PM) Considering he's going to be fairly cheap for a while, if he continues to hit, he'll probably be on the roster. And if he doesn't continue to hit?
  24. QUOTE (fathom @ May 15, 2012 -> 04:27 PM) The question to ask is whether or not the Sox would be better with De Aza in LF, Rios in CF and Viciedo in RF. I don't necessarily think it would make too big of a difference, so I think for the long term, you let De Aza play in CF and hope he can be your CF even after Rios' contract expires. De Aza is 28 I don't know that he'll be on the roster by the time Rios contract is up, much less be the CF'er.
  25. QUOTE (ScottyDo @ May 15, 2012 -> 03:39 PM) So you'd rather have an average-hitting, exceptional defensive corner outfielder platooning than an exceptional-hitting, average defensive CF? That's in a vacuum, not considering that we'd have to find an alternative (i.e. Rios). As everyone else has said, Rios was AAAWFUL last year, and I think you know that. Go ahead, give me sample size as an excuse and I'll hand it right back to you. Marty, this is a ridiculous position to take. We have a handful of legitimate MLB hitters and you're somehow finding a way to criticize one of them. Attention should be paid elsewhere if you have a problem with team makeup. I guess I did criticize De Aza as a hitter by saying he can't lefties, but that is the truth. The other criticism about his fielding has nothing to do with him as a hitter.
