  1. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 01:01 PM) That is an insane amount of value for Mat Gamel. You could probably get two decent prospects each from Jenks and Contreras alone. You throw in Jeffress maybe you have a deal, but as good as Gamel could be this is not a fair return Highly doubt you could get Gamel for Contreras and Jenks.
  2. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 12:09 PM) Gamel's lefty and has a Player of the Year award on his minor league resume recently. Jenks, Contreras, and Fields might not be enough to get him. Old pitcher, high salary , Fields worth nothing, Jenks is the only valuable piece. Now if we paid part of JC's salary it might be worth it for the Brew Crew but I doubt it. Yep, not sure Contreras, Jenks, and Fields would be enough. Replace Fields with Richard and I think you get a lot closer to a deal. Dealing Contreras, Jenks, and Richard in the near future would be the Sox dealing these guys at the top of their value and I think that's a good idea. I don't have confidence in Richard as a member of a championship rotation in the AL. Leverage his performance so far this year into getting another piece of the core if you can. It doesn't have to be Gamel, maybe the Rangers could use this package though I suspect that they'd be more wary of these guys pitching in the AL in that ballpark.
  3. QUOTE (jenks45monster @ Jun 20, 2009 -> 12:07 PM) He's too old? Come on now, he's 25. He's 25 AND IN DOUBLE A!! That's the very definition of too old. All things being equal, you need corner OF'ers in the AL, particularly at the Cell, who crush the baseball. Gartrell isn't one of those guys.
  4. Gartrell's too old and doesn't play a premium defensive position to be considered a solution to any of the Sox's problems. At best he might be a corner OF'er who can mash lefties. Basically a 200 AB guy.
  5. They're selling out, made the playoffs last year and I'd assume it's at least as important to them to make the playoffs this year. With that in mind, would they deal Matt Gamel for a pckage of Contreras, Dotel, and Fields? Actually, I'd probably swap Jenks for Dotel to get the deal done.
  6. This team needs to find its engine (3-6 hitters) for the next 4-5 years as quickly as possible. Best Case By 2011 (in-house options): 3. Beckham 3B 4. Quentin LF 5. Allen 1B 6. Flowers C Probably too much to ask for, but if that would work out they'd have a ton of dough to spend on the best possible DH and they have a history of spending for a DH. Probably because they love getting what they pay for and there are fewer positions more predictable than DH.
  7. Hershiser likes what he has seen from Mitchell. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?...e=ncaa_baseball
  8. Only if he'll agree to get back on the mound so that Coop can fix him.
  9. As of this moment, are we still sellers? I think so because we have the toughest schedule left.
  10. In Wise's defense they need somebody on the bench who can pinch-run. Can't use Nix/Getz as that guy because you don't want to lose your middle-infielder as a pinch-runner.
  11. This whole "Ozzie hates Beckham" is ridiculous. The Sox clubhouse is filled with veterans, can't be an easy place for a highly touted rookie to break in. It would be even more difficult for Beckham with his teammates if Guillen gave him the "teacher's pet" treatment.
  12. In the interim Fields to LF, Pods/Anderson split CF. Look at this as a chance to make certain Fields can't hit before giving up on him.
  13. FWIW, Kevin Goldstein of BP absolutely loves the Mitchell pick. Thinks he's a top 10 pick on talent alone
  14. It's a rebuilding year and that's ok. I'm at the point where I want to see Beckham at short everyday with Ramirez at second and Fields at third.
  15. Viciedo won't play third in the majors (see Carlos Lee). Will his bat be good enough to play a corner OF spot? He's progressed some at Birmingham, but where are the extra-base hits?
  16. I thought from the beginning that the plan for Betemit was to be insurance for Konerko/Thome. They could afford him on the bench if two of Getz, Ramirez, Fields, were producing to management's expectations.
  17. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 5, 2009 -> 08:54 PM) Carrasco, even pitching as well as he has, would not even get you a #8/9/10 prospect in another organization. Unless it was the 2007 White Sox minor league system...then you could trade him for Owens/Brian Russell/Andy Gonzalez. Understand, but unless you think Carrasco is going to be a contributer to the next contending White Sox team, deal him for whatever you can. Borchard brought back Thornton and teams will overpay for pitching at the deadline.
  18. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 5, 2009 -> 08:40 PM) If things go bad the rest of the year, I hope we give Carrasco a chance to start. My initial reaction to this is no. Tear that bullpen apart in a firesale. Don't want to expose Carrasco in a starting spot and lower his trade value.
  19. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 2, 2009 -> 10:25 AM) He'd be getting Pence for the next 4 years...I don't think KW's going to give up on our young prospects for a one-year rental. They have who they think is their dynamic young OF'er, Danks. Pence would be a luxury, one that would most certainly cost Beckham or Danks.
  20. QUOTE (fathom @ Jun 2, 2009 -> 10:16 AM) What if instead of going after a pitcher, KW is trying to acquire a dynamic young outfielder, and will go after Pence with a package of Poreda, Flowers, etc? Have to give up too much for Pence, wouldn't be able to get an arm in July.
  21. QUOTE (shipps @ Jun 2, 2009 -> 10:04 AM) He has had three errors all year and you guys are exaggerating his range to his right. At second base going to his right would be exploited just as much if not more. Atleast at short he snags a ton of what would be base hits up the middle. I thought he was only adequate defensively last year at second too. Though I will say, his arm did allow them to turn a lot of DP's they otherwise would not have, that was a big plus.
  22. QUOTE (lostfan @ Jun 2, 2009 -> 09:49 AM) I don't know about terrific, the guy is plenty athletic and makes some really nice plays, but still pretty inconsistent and prone to boneheaded plays. Plus his range to his right is pretty meh IMO, he disappoints me when I see him make a token effort to get to a ball that it seems like he should've gotten to. Agreed. He's been adequate at short, hasn't shown great range to his right and been only ordinary on pop-ups. He isn't someone you should reject switching back to 2B because of his defense at short, that's for sure.
  23. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Jun 2, 2009 -> 08:38 AM) Where would he play? I wouldn't give up to much for a 35 year old shortstop, who will be a free agent next year. He'd play third or short with Beckham playing the spot he doesn't and Ramirez moving back to 2B. They can add a bat and still have prospects to get a pitcher later as maybe Houston is looking to dump some salary and would be willing to take Fields/Getz/Minor League pitcher not named Poreda.
  24. Why would the Sox have a scout following the Astros when Oswalt isn't pitching? An IF of Konerko, Ramirez, Beckham, and Tejada would be an impressive upgrade. Question is what would it take to get Tejada?
  25. QUOTE (kyyle23 @ May 27, 2009 -> 05:48 PM) and Jake Peavy has given up 7 HR in 67 innings, but you think he is a good alternative here? And Peavy plays in the spacious Petco, Oswalt plays in the bandbox Minutemaid park. And Peavys salary escalates to obscene levels You know why Peavy is a better alternative than Oswalt? He's the better pitcher today *and* he's four years younger. Still, I'd have big problems picking up his option. And just because they can't get Peavy for less than ~$70M doesn't mean they should pay Oswalt $35M.
