QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Sep 14, 2013 -> 10:29 AM) Throwing away our financial flexibility on some B prospects is the correct way to the rebuild the team? When the alternative is adding to this team from the available free agents, yes.
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 14, 2013 -> 10:14 AM) How did that work in Toronto? +1

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Sep 14, 2013 -> 10:11 AM) Seems like a fool-proof strategy to rebuild this team quickly. You're missing the point. It's to rebuild the team correctly.

I've gone back and forth on what the best course of action is this winter and as this season draws to an end, I think 2016 is a realistic season to think about contention. I hope there are opportunities to use their money over the next couple of years to take on bad contracts for prospects instead of signing any free-agents.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 10, 2013 -> 05:06 PM) The results are directly correlated to the process, don't you think? I don't think they were having success spotting low ceiling guys either unless they were intentionally drafting players who could not play in the majors. *Cough* Dave Wilder *cough*.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 10, 2013 -> 12:40 PM) This reminds me a ton of the discussion about high/low ceiling pitchers. In 2005-2006, KW was drafting pitchers that were "low ceiling" guys, guys like Broadway, who had long college careers but didn't have the kind of stuff Chris Sale brings to the table. The idea was to get them up to the big leagues fairly quickly and possibly have them set up as trade bait. People got mad because the Sox were taking "baseball" guys rather than drafting guys with big time talent and trying to develop them. This strikes me as people being mad over precisely the reverse. Going after toolsy, high-risk, high-reward players is exactly what people spent years demanding the Sox do. People are upset with the results of Sox drafting. Nobody gives one damn about the process.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Sep 9, 2013 -> 03:27 PM) Right but also look at what the Jays did. Sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't. The Red Sox also already had a ton more talent than us. Pedroia, Ortiz, Ellsbury, Salty. Their offseason was about finding a new group of complementary pieces. Not to mention a far better system.
-
QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Sep 9, 2013 -> 12:27 PM) Exactly. The time is now. Our winning pitching window just opened. The Sox are going to lose 95+ games the time isn't now.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Sep 7, 2013 -> 05:30 PM) I think at some point, you have to worry about the failures. I don't want Reed blowing saves. I don't want our young hitters failing in big situations. What I don't mind is Ax failing or Keppinger sucking. Now that we're playing some of what we hope will be the next core, I think it hurts when they absolutely suck, even in the long run. I think you have to be concerned about the starters behind Sale during this streak. I think Santiago has taken a step back. Is it fatigue or is he always going to be a guy who throws a lot of pitches. If it's the latter that means he's likely a back-of-the-rotation pitcher.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 7, 2013 -> 05:18 PM) It has just devolved into petty trolling to make a non-existent point. That is the big problem. +1

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 7, 2013 -> 05:10 PM) And this type of post is the exact kind of worthless trash I mean. Sorry Balta, but Reed is just another bullpen arm.
-
QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Sep 7, 2013 -> 04:57 PM) Nothing you said here makes a case for Reed being a bad closer. His stuff is short of what you want from a closer.
-
QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Sep 7, 2013 -> 04:46 PM) Oh man, I agree wholeheartedly and furthermore I hate any complaining about individual player's so-called mediocrity (Flowers, Keppinger, Gillaspie, etc., etc.). All teams have "mediocre" players and to see complaining all season long about our guys who are "mediocre" gets awfully tiresome. "Mediocre" is being kind.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Sep 7, 2013 -> 04:39 PM) I don't mind people cheering for the draft pick nearly as much as the people waiting to celebrate every failure by declaring how right they were about player x being mediocre because of a single outing. The garbage about Reed in this thread is a perfect example. Please. The reason why this team is battling for the 2nd pick in the draft is because it is not very good. Addison Reed is just another bullpen guy.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 7, 2013 -> 03:56 PM) Yet he has a better WHIP and BAA than Chris Sale. This is the silliest thing I've ever read on Soxtalk, building a case that Addison Reed is better than Chris Sale.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 7, 2013 -> 03:58 PM) He's the least of this organization's problems right now though. If you can get a big time package in return for him this offseason, by all means, do it. I agree he's the least of their problems, I don't think you can get a big return for him. His stuff just doesn't warrant it.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 7, 2013 -> 03:52 PM) He seems to be a very average reliever. To his credit, it's ridiculous they pitched him all those games in a row. It's no shock he's struggled since then. His stuff at the major league level just hasn't been what it was reported to be in the minors.
-
QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 7, 2013 -> 03:50 PM) Great win for the Orioles. That would have hurt a lot. 6-15 to 100 losses. t is hard to lose 100.

Addison Reed is not a closer.

I think Quintana for Lawrie would be a pretty fair trade and one I'd make so long as they replace him short-term with a free agent signing and longer-term by taking a pitcher in the draft. More than focusing on a player though, it would be interesting to see what the best offers available for Quintana and Santiago are.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 4, 2013 -> 01:11 PM) BS. The guy is going to be 50 in January. Do people really believe that he has finally been humbled at this age, after not being humbled after all of the other controversies that the guy has been through over the years? He learned now as opposed to when he said the players didn't owe the fans anythign during the 94 strike? Or when he ripped the White Sox after his release as a player? After his Cuba comments? After his "f**" comments? After the Oney stuff? NOW, he gets it? Please. Put the heatlamp back on the guy, and he'll meltdown just like he always has. You know before you hire Guillen it's going to be scorched earth policy when you have to let him go. Just like Billy Martin, if he manages the team to the playoffs, World Series it's worth it.

Can't non-tender one of your best hitters regardless of how many mental mistakes he makes. He wasn't nearly this bad last year for example.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Sep 1, 2013 -> 12:32 AM) I know this is completely random, but what else can Obama do? Make a case to the public of why it's in the United States best interests to act militarily against Syria. Americans are war weary and saying it's morally the right thing to do is not enough.

Interviews with 9 Winston-Salem prospects

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Aug 31, 2013 -> 04:57 PM) Among other things. Everything he has shown so far has only proven me to be correct. In fact, a week or so after my thread he blocked the W-S Dash beat writer on twitter for tweeting about his struggles. Acts like that just exude confidence in his maturity. You're taking Twitter to an extreme my friend. -

QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Aug 31, 2013 -> 04:40 PM) That is definitely debatable but I am not looking to open that can of worms again. You got ripped for passing judgement on a kid you don't know based on his twitter feed.
