QUOTE (bbilek1 @ Aug 20, 2013 -> 05:12 PM) Brett Lawrie fits that mold. He'd be on the list of players I'd approve of trading one of those two for. They have to find some left-handed hitting though. One of the reasons I think Morrison makes sense.
-
A deal for Santiago or Quintana will have to target a Colby Rasmus-type, meaning a young hitter with pedigree who hasn't broken through yet.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 20, 2013 -> 04:04 PM) If the Padres aren't going to resign Headley, and they need pitching that badly, why couldn't you just deal them Rienzo and Snodgress for Headley? Personally, I have no problem with that deal. Headley is too big of a risk.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 20, 2013 -> 02:16 PM) I've been trying to come up with a guess as to a 3rd baseman who would work for both sides in such a deal but I've been struggling. Any ideas? (focusing on 3b with the assumption the Sox will go hard after Abreu to fill their 1b hole and will not want to trade for a young catcher with what they currently have on their roster). They need a hitter (more like two) more than a 3B. The easiest positions to find one are LF/1B. Quintana, Santiago, need to be dealt for the best young hitter available.

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 01:17 PM) Why would I say Viciedo, Marty? This a serious conversation. If it's a serious conversation why would you say clone Dunn? How would you improve he team's OBP?
-
QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 01:13 PM) Cloning Adam Dunn. At least you didn't say Viciedo.
-
QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 01:01 PM) I'd give up no more than Webb or Petricka. How do you expect to improve the team OBP.?
-
QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 12:54 PM) Lifetime .342 OBP and 4 HR's this year and you want to trade one of the best young starters in baseball for him. Maybe we can get Lyle Overbay, Ross Gload and Nick Johnson while we're at it. If the Sox can get him for less by all means they should do it. He's a very good fit for what the team needs as he gets on base.

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 12:40 PM) Seriously? He walks a little, has declining power and is on the verge of being fat. Everything about him screams roids. He's also ugly and has a stupid haircut. He is left handed though. The guy can get on base.

QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 12:39 PM) First off, I would not trade for Logan Morrison. This is what I would do if I were Hahn. Sign both Morales and McCann to 2-3 year deals. Next would be finding left handed relief help. JP Howell and Pedro Feliciano come to mind to try and help this bullpen. I would pick up Lindstrom's option to just to give a little depth to the bullpen. As far as the starting rotation goes, I think if Erik Johnson isn't ready, sign one of Josh Johnson, Edinson Volquez or Tim Lincecum. But if Johnson is then push Rienzo to the bullpen to take Axelrod's spot. As far as trades, this is how I would go at it. I could definitely see the Angels being interested in Santiago and/or Quintana. I would rather keep both but for the sake of making the team better, I would trade Santiago to the Angels for CJ Cron, Alex Yarbough and Mike Morin. I then would still try and trade Alexei so I would trade him to the Cardinals for Pete Kozma, Charlie Tilson, and Tim Cooney. Line up would be CF De Aza 2B Beckham C McCann DH Morales 1B Dunn RF Garcia LF Viciedo 3B Gillaspie SS Kozma Bench C Phegley UTIL Garcia OF Danks Free Agent Rotation Sale Quintana Danks Erik Johnson Josh Johnson/Edinson Volquez/Tim Lincecum Bullpen Rienzo Lindstrom Howell Veal Petricka Jones Reed Thoughts? Waste of money, window is too short with McCann and Morales.

QUOTE (daggins @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 11:55 AM) Johnson is one of the best SP prospects in baseball at this point so they won't trade him except in a package for a big bat. Santiago I could see moved for LoMo plus MiLB pieces. His walks sap his value, although he has been better as a starter. The main question is why the Marlins would be buying when they are as bad, if not worse, than the Sox? Maybe the Marlins want to get (even) younger.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 11:40 AM) Santiago or Johnson for Morrison would be an absolutley horrific move. We're talking about a guy who is arb-eligible next year and has basically shown as much as Viciedo at the major league level. On top of that, he's an infamous "LF" which you've personally claimed you don't waste time developing, since they are so easy to come by. Trading our best pitching prospect or a major league starter with top of the rotation potential to get said player makes this the strangest and most contradictory suggestion you have ever made on this board. Morrison has the attributes needed for a prottype #3 hitter. 119 OPS+. Who are other young hitters who can be targeted?
-
QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 12:02 PM) Logan Morrison sucks. My God... Logan Morrison? Jesus, Marty. You don't like a 119 OPS+?
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 11:24 AM) to be determined Come on now . . .
-
QUOTE (Jake @ Aug 18, 2013 -> 11:18 AM) Marty, that would be a horrendous overpay for LoMo. His price would be more like Dayan, which I'm sure you would be all for. If you can get him for less then by all means yu do it. What did you think of the return for Alex Rios?

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 17, 2013 -> 05:30 PM) The difference between a closer and a setup man really isn't anything other than what's between the ears... I think there's that, but his stuff is a tick below what makes me comfortable with a closer.
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Aug 17, 2013 -> 04:39 PM) If he does well. He'll take Lindstrom's spot in the bullpen. Having Jones and Reed in 8 and 9 is still very good. I'm not sold on Reed as a closer for a contending team. I think his stuff is best suited for set-up.
-
I think Petricka is best suited as a 6th-7th inning guy.

"off the field" issues blamed for Ramirez's high error
Marty34 replied to southsider2k5's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Aug 15, 2013 -> 12:11 PM) Ramirez has struggled defensively, but he's been far from awful. Like most he's had a bad year overall. -
What we're learning is the Sox don't have many desirable players. Not a shock.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 07:02 PM) So you are telling me that Frank Thomas exited his mother's womb and that very second knew what an 86 MPH slider looked like? Obviously, I kid. But beyond my over exaggeration, of course you can teach it - to some extent. It's the same as bat speed as is the same with running the bases - you can teach certain things and train certain ways to improve, but at some point in time, natural talent is necessary and some guys simple don't possess it. I think pitch recognition is a skill that can be refined with repetition, but there is only so much improvement that can be made.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 05:21 PM) In terms of results, no. But one of them has a much better chance to improve if coached correctly. I'm not sure pitch recognition can be taught.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 05:39 PM) As long as we're clear that every cuban has the wrong bat speed. I don't think bat speed has much to do with ethnicity.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 14, 2013 -> 05:04 PM) LOL, that's timing and pitch recognition, not bat speed. I'm not sure I can think of anyone on the White Sox with better "bat speed" than Viciedo. ROFL. One guy will swing through the pitch because he starts to late, the other guy because he starts too early. Does it matter?
