QUOTE(fathom @ Jan 9, 2007 -> 04:25 PM) I'd take the Tigers starting rotation over the Sox, and I'd put our rotation on par with that of the Indians. Agree on the Tigers...not on the Indians. They would have to show that they can hack it for a full season first. And it's not fair anyway, Sabathia can be counted as two...maybe two-and-a-half starters.

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jan 9, 2007 -> 04:47 PM) Big deal. He hurt his team just as much as he helped them with that ridiculous record. He should have taken some days off and been a bit more healthy instead of caring so much about that record. It is ridiculous that he belongs in the hall for that record alone. Ridiculous. Hmmm...ok, Cal Ripken: AL Rookie of the Year 2-time AL MVP 2-time All Star Game MVP 2-time Gold Glove 8-time Silver Slugger 19-Time All Star Most Home Runs for a SS His career range factor is higher than Omar Vizquel He paved the way for taller SS (see: Alex Rodriguez, Miguel Tejada) Mark McGwire: AL Rookie of the Year 12-time All Star 1-time Gold Glove 3-time Silver Slugger Yeah, not so much. -
QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Jan 9, 2007 -> 04:40 PM) I can't find them anywhere, all they have on NFL shop is 2X. I'm kicking myself for not buying one earlier, but I thought I would at least be able to get one online. Wait until the conference champs shirts come out and then you won't even think twice about the division champs shirts! /knocks on wood...A LOT!

17. Right about where I thought I'd be as well...although there were a few "Yeah, but...." questions which were hard to answer. Especially the Joint Chiefs or United Nations. Yikes. Talk about a rock and a hard place.

Chicago writer submits blank HOF ballot

Hey, he has a right as a voter to vote or not vote. To vote for who he wants to vote for and who he doesn't want to vote for. He made a statement and he has his views...so what. Ripken and Gwynn will still get in. -
What I remember is when I was CD club member. When I was sick of CDs (or when I got those two 20 free CD shipments when I didn't order it and was never charged for it) and wanted to sell them back, many times they wouldn't take them back because it had that special BMG/Columbia House bar code on it. Or they would give me less. I would never join again, but if you are looking to build up your collection fast, and have some money to spare...it's not the worst thing you can do.

QUOTE(knightni @ Jan 9, 2007 -> 02:28 AM) I'd say .250 10HR 58RBI, solid D. And don't forget, he makes Dye and Podsednik better, not to mention the pitching staff. I'd be happy with those numbers.

QUOTE(Hideaway Lights @ Jan 9, 2007 -> 09:51 AM) I predicted 95-105 wins based on a 2005 that was now apparently an 87 win team overacheiving, so maybe that prediction was actually off. There's no way in hell Garland ever has that 2005 year again in my opinion, and there's no way in hell Contreras has that kind of run again. That run was Santana like. Every time he was on the mound I knew he was going to win. The truth is somewhere in the middle. They were probably talent wise a high eighties winning team that way overacheived in 2005, and they were probably a talent wise a low to mid nineties team last year that underachieved. Keep in mind that we got about as much as anyone could hope for from Thome, Dye and Thorton last year. It's not like there weren't people who greatly exceeded expectations despite the disappointments. I'm not sure how anyone could argue this team is better or even as good on paper than the 2006 team for 2007. In my eyes it's at least 5-10 games worse. Now for 2008 and beyond, we will see. But I've been down this road a few times and seen too many Baldwins and Ruffcorns to know that prospects don't mean anything necessarily. You are absolutely right about the truth being in the middle. And you are right about Thome and Dye, but I think Thornton has more. I can definitely argue that this team is better than last year. First, and probably the weakest argument, is that they have more rest. Not only were the Sox coming off the World Series run, but some were coming off of the World Baseball Classic. Second, it's not how well you hit the ball or how hard, it's when. What the Sox did in 2005 was clutch hitting. Last year, not so much, it came in home run bunches. If Ozzie can get his team to do some bunting, some smart base-running, manufacture runs, which I think he will stress in camp, then this team will be better offensively than last year. Third, the fifth starters of past years weren't the high ceiling guys that we have now. Well, maybe they were, but there was one of them. And they were handed the job...sound familiar? Now, we have a competition between all the pitchers Balta mentioned before. A competition of high ceiling guys is better than handing the job to one high ceiling guy, IMHO.

QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Jan 8, 2007 -> 12:45 PM) So, Bush is going to give a speech on Wednesday evening setting out a "new plan" for Iraq. Here are some discussion questions... --Will you watch the speech? --What do people think it will include and not include? --Which of those things do people think will be effective, if any? --If you were him, right now, what would you do for Iraq? Is this part of or separate from his State of the Union? Just curious. I will try to watch it. Include: Lots and lots of thanking of the troops there and returned. Lots of diatribe about how the parties have to work together to form a united front. Won't include: A love letter to Nancy Pelosi. Any solid exit strategy. Effectiveness: I think this will be like a open sore...we will leave it alone and it will go away on its own (only in the face of another, equally disgusting sore). What I would do: Man, what can he do? He has to stay the course. He's got to buckle down and figure out the best way to a) get us the heck up outta there, 2) leave Iraq in a stable place and d) do it while straddling the Republican-Democrat fence. In the immortal words of Jim Carrey in Bruce Almighty: Good luck with all that.

Normally, I can't stand the guy, but I thought this was an interesting take on pitchers. It's in the insider portion of the site, so I'm only going to highlight the one paragraph. Basically, the article is saying that GMs are too quick to use "major league tested" as a reason to pay a pitcher, i.e. Jason Marquis. Just because he's MADE millions, doesn't mean he should MAKE millions. Used Cubs and Giants as examples of overspending for pitchers. Then he said this: Pretty interesting. Neyer on ESPN Insider

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jan 7, 2007 -> 06:16 PM) Interestingly, if people recall, I believe Anderson actually put together a pretty good spring training last year. 21/68, home run, .845 OPS in the spring. And he's hit over .300 in ST both years where he was in camp with the big boys. So ST might very well be the least of his concerns. Or so we hope. He should have a month or two in the big leagues to get going, and by get going, I basically mean hitting in the .230's or so. That's all I want from him to start the season, he doesn't have to be good with the bat, just not bloody awful. With his defense, he should just give us more than an NL team gets out of its 9 hole. And anyway, in terms of the general topic of this thread...trading Brian Anderson now is a terrible idea. Why? Because right now, Anderson's value is basically as low as it could possibly get unless he hits .160 the next 3 years. Right now, anyone who wants to acquire him will be trying to do so with the hope that they can "Turn him around" and get more out of him than we could because he does have a lot of talent. But teams would do the same thing at the end of next season, and probably the season after that if he's still struggling then. On the other hand, if he can learn a few things somewhere along the line, and put together a good season, then suddenly his value goes right back up. Think about this...how much would the Sox have cost themselves if they decided to trade Crede in the middle of the 05 season, when he was still struggling before he finally worked the kinks out of his swing (and there was sure a lot of talk about replacing him with Eric Chavez, for example). By holding onto Crede, the Sox saved talent, they suddenly found themselves holding a much more valuable trading chip in Crede, and they've saved themselves over $15 million in the last 2 seasons alone. What have you heard? We're trading for Chavez?

QUOTE(Hideaway Lights @ Jan 8, 2007 -> 11:10 AM) I just got my Buehrle jersey back from being numbered and lettered.... but I think the White Sox need to trade him and Vazquez and finish building for the future. We are an 83-87 game winner right now. I don't see how anyone could argue otherwise with Vaz in the 4-slot and a cast of thousands in the 5-slot. Sure, we still have a great lineup and we have a great bullpen, but the winner of this division the last several years has had starting pitching as its major strength. Can you really count on Contreras having another great year at his age and with his injury history? Can we really count on Garland to carry us again? Can we really count on Buehrle to rebound? These are all HUGE contigencies. Even if all three go as well as possible there is still the question of Vazquez and Floyd/Sisco/whoever. In any case, we are NOT signing Buehrle to a five or six year contract. Reinsdorf has never done it, and he will not do it now. So why not get something for him? You're not getting enough for him midseason. Additionally, Vazquez still has value in the NL. I would HATE to see Buehrle go but I think it makes the most sense with the moves we have already made. If you thinkthe Sox are an 83-87 win team this year...and the Sox do trade Buehrle and/or Vazquez now...are you prepared for a 4th place finish and barely making .500 if at all? I'm not. I, personally, would rather have the Sox compete year after year. If that means that we trade some of our chips and let some go with just draft pick compensation, then that's what it means. If the teams is competing year after year, it's a lot easier to catch lightning in a bottle when you are consistently winning. One exception to that rule would be the Marlins. Tore down and built back up.

QUOTE(spiderman @ Jan 6, 2007 -> 08:44 PM) Why should the White Sox ante up if they feel their prospects can carry the load? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of acquiring all these young arms ? I'd love to have Buerhel here long-term, and I think the Whie Sox probably do as well, but I don't see them bending very much considering they are so high on their prospects, and KW has spoken at length about how out of control the market is. Because, Mark Buehrle is 28 years old. He's just comign into his prime. He doesn't throw hard or with a lot of torque on his arm. He doesn't deserve 7 years, $126 million, but then again, no pitcher does. If the Sox could give him 4-5 years for maybe $14 - $16 mil per...I think that would be good. If he turns it down...he turns it down...but I think the Sox should try. He isn't 38, he's 28 people.

Iowans Get Screwed Out of NFL Playoffs

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Jan 5, 2007 -> 03:03 PM) The Fox station in Des Moines and CBS station in Cedar Rapids are gonna be pulled from cable tonight unless someone steps in....which means we need an antenna to watch the playoff games....or a dish. This sucks. Iowa gets cable? Why don't you just weave together some corn stalks and silk and hook one endup to the rooster-shaped weather vane on top of your grain silo and the other end to your old Zenith "Porthole" television? That should work just fine. -
We aren't in a weaker situation. We have two players that COULD, and I stress COULD, play short until we find someone we like. Cintron and Ozuna can play SS. That being said, Uribe won't sit out the year.

I normally wouldn't do this but...Jeanne Zelasko? Why? I mean...why? I would like to put her, Kevin Kennedy, Tim McCarver and Joe Buck's baseball personality into a Super Bass-o-matic 3000 and make a McKenneBuckasko smoothie which I will drink...promptly throw back up...make a vomelet...and throw it up again in a vat of bleach. QUOTE(Rooftop Shots @ Jan 4, 2007 -> 09:41 PM) I was at that game. That's when Cameron and Boone Both went back to back jacks TWICE in the first inning. I think it was the first time in history it was ever done. Cameron hit 4 jacks that day, and when he put the 5th one on the warning track, The Cell gave him a HUGE ovation! And why not? We were down by 7,000,000,000, runs anyway. We saw history the first inning. Why not see history made twice in the same game by being the first to hit 5 jacks in a game? It's a shame it didn't happen. On a different note, somebody quote me if I'm wrong, but wasn't that also Rauch'e ML debut? Can't remember!! I was as well...my wife got us into a box so at least we got to eat well for the drubbing. But I remember being pissed because we got there a little late and missed the first back-to-back jacks. At least we got to see the other three. And when Cameron juuuuuusssst misssssssed that 5th hr, that was pretty sweet to see the crowd get up and cheer.

QUOTE(IlliniKrush @ Jan 4, 2007 -> 01:22 PM) For only 16 games, i believe they would without a doubt. If the sox play only every other sunday at home, people would jam the place regardless of opponent. It's way easier to be a bears fan in this town than it is a baseball fan, as it's a shorter season. As i said earlier, they attract the 'dumb' fan very easily. That may be true...but there is a split between two teams in Chicago and yet everyone gets behind the Bears. Plus, I think there have been more memorable personalities that have resonated with the Bears fans than almost every other team. Blackhawks are probably second in that category. -
QUOTE(Rex Kicka** @ Jan 3, 2007 -> 06:38 PM) George Michael... But the way he falls asleep behind the wheel all the time, I think I'm circling the drain. Elvis Costello would be kickin too. QUOTE(mr_genius @ Jan 3, 2007 -> 06:39 PM) I think Einstein's main scientific rival, Werner Heisenberg, had 7 kids. Federline might catch him though. No, but I think Shawn Kemp passed all of them...combined. Anyway, and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't there a time in everyone's life, usually during puberty, when we all struggle with our sexuality? And during that time, sides are "chosen?" Well, then, we are all human and don't make the right choices in our life. So, for all of the homosexuals that "battled" it and became heteros, that could mean two things to me: 1. They couldn't take the societal pressure of being homosexual and decided it would be easier (although I can't imagine living a lifestyle you aren't completely comfortable with would be easier). 2. Something in their body changes and they honestly have changed their preferences. I'm not sure this is possible, but the human body is an amazing engine. And that being said, for every 10 homosexuals trying to live their lives as a heterosexual, you would have to speculate that a couple heterosexuals are trying to live their lives as homosexual. Which is kinda interesting to think about. And one more thing, off my topic, PA, whose church shouldn't they be married in? Yours? All of them? I think it's up to the members of that faith to allow or not allow same-sex marriages. Last time I checked, weddings and marriage is about love, not God. But, that is how I feel...not everyone feels that way, and that's OK.
