Chief Illiniwek.....HE GONE!!!
CanOfCorn replied to whitesoxfan101's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE(thedoctor @ Feb 16, 2007 -> 08:37 AM) word. as for this decision, i'm in favor of it. it was time. yes, it was a tradition, but i tend to agree with 101 that all this handwringing over some white guy prancing around in a costume was overdone on both sides. i'm tired of the argument and happy that at least part of it go away. as an alumni, i care that my university offers great educational opportunities, is at the forefront of research, and has student-athletes that we can be proud of. i don't really give a damn about the mascot. it did nothing to enhance my undergraduate experience. Also as an alumni, it did enhance my undergraduate experience. I looked forward to football games (they were actually good when I went there) and got goose bumps every halftime. I also went to a game in the early 80's when I was in Jr. High and the Chief was one of a few things I remember (also beating the snot out of Indiana). I know a former Chief and he has always held that position in incredibly high regard. I am saddened by this move, disappointed that the University didn't do more to fight the NCAA, but will take it in stride and support the University going forward. But, they will definitely be under more scrutiny for awhile. RIP...Chief Illiniwek. -
QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Feb 15, 2007 -> 01:34 PM) I'm also baffled that people think it's ok to spew hate as long as you're being "honest." It's not ok...but you have no right to tell him to say or not say it.

QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Feb 15, 2007 -> 12:24 PM) Is it true that the 'on time departure' record for airlines is based on when all the passengers are on board, not when the plane actually takes off? Often times they know well in advance that the plane will not take off on time, but they still make all the passengers board so that it doesn't hurt their record. I think it's when they close the doors to the plane. But I could be wrong.

QUOTE(Heads22 @ Feb 15, 2007 -> 10:30 AM) Someone has some faith in Mean Gene. I'd think KState is on teh way up if I wasn't so sure Prince will eff it up somehow. Mangino can't get over the hump. Mizzou is and always will be Mizzou. I sure hope the future of the North is ISU and Nebraska. I'm getting we'll see a little bit of what Chizik is made of this year. I've seen Gene down here in Austin for a couple years...and while I don't know what kind of recruiter he is...he's a good coach. His defenses are fast and swarm to the ball. If it works for the Bears, it'll work for the Cyclones!

The other issue is that he wasn't threatening anyone. He was speaking about himself. Now, if he said something along the lines of, "If Amaechi was on my team when I played, I would have beat the crap out of him." That's unacceptable. It's a threat to a group of people. What he said, while ignorant, where his personal feelings.

QUOTE(Jenks Heat @ Feb 15, 2007 -> 12:10 PM) Small Ball encompasses hitting behind the runner and the hit and run as well as bunting. I hope the emphasis is on fundamentals. The think the start of last season was a result of Big Ball and when it faded we could nto resort back to Small Ball for some reason. I do not understand why Konerko, Dye and Thome will not practice bunting. Thome especially when the shift is on. Because Konerko and Thome wouldn't beat it out. Even with the shift. Dye, on the other hand, does have some speed and should practice bunting to move the Wheels Konerko and Molasses Thome over. That is, if he's batting 5th.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 15, 2007 -> 09:51 AM) If this was hollywood they could just send him to rehab and everyone would forget it ever happened. Or he could blame his parents. Whoops, sorry, that was the 90's. I applaud him for his candor. I vilify him for his ignorance.

QUOTE(Jimbo @ Feb 14, 2007 -> 01:40 PM) How do you not get to the top of the big 12 north...that is a whole lot of crap. Well, Nebraska is improving, Iowa State will improve with Chizik aaaaaaannnnddd I believe the Buffs were 2-10 this year, soooooooo I'm guessing it's not as easy as you might think.

Blah-beddy, blah-blah... The Sox are going to be fine. I'll take a contending Sox team over a team that goes in the tank every couple of years...a la the Marlins. Sure, they reach the pinnacle and catch lightning in a bottle twice...but it's definitely harder to keep my attention when you are losing 2 out of 3 than winning 2 out of 3. And it certainly is much more fun to watch when there's a good blend of young and seasoned players. At least to me it is. Garcia gawn...McCarthy gawn...Gload gawn...Cotts gawn...instead of looking back on this offseason and the good/bad parts to it...why don't we look forward to Saturday when pitchers and catchers report? Or April 2nd...opening day? Move on people...move on....

According to Chicago Tribune...Phil Haig has signed a LOI with Illinois. Have a good redshirt year, Phil, and welcome aboard.

Not if he can get them back to the top of the Big 12 North, he won't. And especially considering the whole Neuheisel/Barnett fiascos before him. This is tame.

QUOTE(sircaffey @ Feb 14, 2007 -> 10:16 AM) That was me. I didn't ask for a trade that turned out successful. I asked for a trade that at the time that it was made, everyone agreed Kenny made a fantastic deal (value wise). The Garcia trade with Seattle was MUCH debated. I think we are much too close to the team to judge objectively. We had a lot of people saying Olivo would be excellent given time. IIRC, Reed was our top OF prospect at the time. Of course, all Sox fans want Kenny to grab as much as he can...we should, that's why we are called fans. But, it doesn't work that way. There are waaaaay too many factors that go into it that we dont' know about.

Jim Mora, Jr. and Rivera have both been rumored to be interviewed for the job. I can't imagine Jimmy Johnson leaving the booth, IMO.
-
There's one aspect that people are forgetting...money. Either money right now or in the future. Equal talent is definitely an aspect of every trade...but we have to think about the money that comes off the books or the Sox won't have to pay. Just keep in mind that there are many factors that go into a trade, not just talent for talent.

Ooooh, how I wish I had the cojones or lack of self-respect to have sent something like that to my ex. I don't know if Tex or Soxy have been left for another which ended in a divorce, but "Dan" but down every broken and bitter man's dream to paper. I had to laugh.

QUOTE(Jimbo @ Feb 13, 2007 -> 01:32 PM) This team would suck healthy....cmon!! Please, I beg of you, if you want to post this, do it in the College Basketball thread, not in this one.

Comparing the AL Central Starting Rotations

QUOTE(spiderman @ Feb 11, 2007 -> 05:23 PM) What's more likely - Vazquez to pitch how he has the past several seasons (a 4th starter) or get his head straighted out, and develop into a shutdown ace ? I think we both know what's more likely to happen, but I hope you are right. Do you go with the team that has proven success, i.e. 2005 White Sox, 2006 Tigers? Do you go with the team that has upside, i.e. Tigers, Indians, Twins? Will Kenny Rogers win without the "dirt?" Is Maroth healthy again? Will Verlander bounce back after a huge workload? Will Cliff Lee finally have the breakout year people are predicting? Will Sabathia report to training camp off the Bob Wickman diet? Is Sowers the real thing? Can Santana continue his success (I would say, yes)? Will Silva and Bonser pitch up to their potential? Buehrle is in his contract year and is in good shape. Garland has gone 18 wins in back-to-back seasons. Contreras is a question mark because of health and age. Which Vazquez is going to show up? I think I'd rank them this way (because I'll go with what I know over what I don't know): 1. Tigers 2. White Sox 3. Indians 4. Twins 5. Royals -

Being Jewish, the whole open casket thing is weird to me. I've been to two open casket wakes and they both made me feel uncomfortable. I don't think there is a good answer to this question. I think by asking us, it may mean that you aren't sure, and if that's the case, I would err on the side of caution and say don't bring her. But, she's your daughter, and if she understands, then maybe she'll be ok?

From the Chicago Tribune: It was between 11:30 and 11:45 pm and they were around Assembly Hall, so maybe they were coming back from working out. Unless they were at someone's house partying, there aren't many bars on First St.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 13, 2007 -> 11:20 AM) Yeah, the coach gives you your best record ever, and he needs to go. This is why some franchises just dont win. No s***. I don't know how much pressure AJ Smith is under, but it's got to be 10x as much now. He won the battle, but now he has to win the war.

ON Mike and Mike this morning, Golic was saying that the Chargers shouldn't hire an assistant head coach, like Jim Caldwell of the Colts, a coordinator, like Rivera or even a college coach because this team was 14-2 last year and like Fotop said, has probably the best talent in all of football. They need someone with experience, a "retread." Someone who can come in and basically say, "Alright, you had success last year, we aren't going to change much." I don't think Pete Carroll wants to be back in the NFL anyways, even though he would be a retread. Maybe someone like a Jim Mora, Jr.? Probably too young. Golic was saying a possibility could be June Jones. He and the Chargers owner have a good relationship, his def. coordinator is Jerry Glanville, who runs the 3-4 and June is an offensive minded coach. Might not be a bad fit.
