  1. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 2, 2007 -> 08:54 AM) http://www.suntimes.com/sports/colleges/28...jamar02.article It's the exact defense I was expecting from him (he didn't have a cell phone is accurate after all) but i'm going to be sick. Reading this makes me convinced yet again he'll be back on the Illini after taking a plea. And if he was so suicidial, why we he having the time of his life at senior night. This story his more holes than the Cubs pitching staff. I'm not trying to rip on you, but have you ever had a concussion? I'm going to be the lawyer here and say, isn't it POSSIBLE that, because of the concussion, he made some ridiculous decisions? I've had a couple of them myself and let me tell you...the only thing I could think about was the pain, not throwing up, and where the hell I was. I'm not backing off my stance that if he wants to play, he's going to have to earn back that scholarship...or just walk-on, but to turn your back on someone is cruel.
  2. QUOTE(Beltin @ Mar 1, 2007 -> 06:57 PM) You have inspired me...."Can O' Konerko" Very nice. And I thank you. May your can overrunneth with...um...corn.
  3. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 1, 2007 -> 03:14 PM) 800+ years and Eve was still pushing them out. That's some longevity. There was an old lady who lived right outside of Eden...she had so many children, her uterus fell out! OOOOHHHH!!! Yeah, not the same.
  4. But lots of Cubs. And notice how many lead-off options are on there and not Scotty Pods. Maybe K-Will did a GOOD job this year...hmmmm. Check it.
  5. QUOTE(Jimbo @ Mar 1, 2007 -> 12:46 PM) Try living in Kansas for 5 years, yikes. Luckily, Lawrence has many hills so no chance of a touchdown. Are you talking weather or the football team?
  6. QUOTE(Controlled Chaos @ Mar 1, 2007 -> 09:05 AM) Is anyone even going to ask why the teacher had to do this? ss2k5 you just nailed the big difference between when we were kids and the kids now. When we were kids, at least in my case...the teacher was always right. My parents wouldn't fall for me saying "oh the teacher made MY test harder cause she doesn't like me" or "the teacher is just picking on me", but my sister, who is a teacher, has parents coming in accusing her of that all the time. It's like are you kidding me?? If I did something wrong in class and was punished or I had bad grades and messed up, my parents never blamed my teachers. They blamed me and they were right, cause it was always me..no matter what I would say about my teacher. I could just imagine coming home and telling my parents the teacher taped me to the chair. First thing out of their mouths would be "What did you do to make her do that? Now it's "what did that abusive teacher do to my poor baby" I completely agree. Except, she was a substitute teacher. I dont' know about you, but I remember giving them HELL! She shouldn't have bound kids to the chair or taped their mouths shut, but it's hard to come into a class, not knowing the kids and the kids not knowing you and immediately have that mutual respect. PS...in high school, my French teacher slapped a student for talking back and you know what happened...nothing. Should she have slapped him? No. Did he deserve it? You bet he did.
  7. I said football, but if I could split my vote, I would put a 20% vote with baseball. It depends on if the manager calls pitches or not. If not, then football, if so, then baseball.
  8. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Feb 28, 2007 -> 05:29 PM) Yeah, Flash posted these here. Thanks. Wow...someone over there is smoking some SERIOUS crack. Twins? Without Liriano? And an unproven staff besides Santana? Whew. I'll give them the Tigers and Indians. Ridiculous!
  9. Does he own any other sports teams other than the Mavs? Arena? Minor partner in something else?
  10. QUOTE(Al Lopez @ Feb 28, 2007 -> 04:42 PM) Murphy on the Score today had someone from BP, and he said that their early projection for the Sox this year was... 72 and 90. Which struck me as a mite pessimistic, but there you have it. They thought our question marks in the outfield, 5th spot in the rotation, Uribe, and our tough division would add up to one hell of a bad year. Did that person give the predictions for the entire division?
  11. This story is just so sad. Like someone said, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. One thing that would help would be to cut some of the paperwork and red tape involved for the health professionals. But, since it's government...that won't happen. And just to add my two cents...I would pay extra to insure all children under the age of 18. But I'd like to see that it actually is going to it, cuz I don't trust the man.
  12. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Feb 28, 2007 -> 10:15 AM) That is true, I misrepresented all of Christiandom as being wrapped up with the fate of the corporeal body. Those people aren't the folks up in arms about the claims made by this film though. For my part, I think the claim that the tomb has anything to do with a historical living Jesus is a crock, despite the filmmakers' statisticians who say there's at least a 600 to 1 chance the tomb and remains are Jesus'. I hope they make sure it doesn't say Jeebus, who, as we all know, was Jesus' evil twin. And it doesn't really matter anyway, because, again, the sequel is NEVER as good as the original. Seriously, though, I would watch it just to see what they have to say. Anytime there is empirical evidence that challenges ANY part of faith, even the merlot or shiraz debate that Flaxx brought up earlier, it sends the church historians and leaders scrambling to explain. And that can chip away at certain people's faith.
  13. I Stephen Bardo. I would watch out for Missouri State and UNI. Missouri State is squarely on the bubble and UNI can get hot at any time. Wichita State could get hot too, but they could also bomb out very quickly...in fact...I think they would be more on the bomb out quickly side. That being said, Go Salukis! (And that's from an Illini fan)
  14. QUOTE(rowandrules83 @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 10:51 PM) Very true. The moment a potential employer is willing to offer you x amount of dollars, almost everyone feels that their current employer could and should at least come close to matching the dollar amount. If the employer won't match it (especially if they can afford it), many people would feel less valuable and take the higher salaried job. Many of us do this throughout our careers, but surprisingly we act appalled when a professional athlete does the same thing. We do say this, but what I think Balta is saying is the difference between $20,000 and $40,000 is significant for us. But, when you get to millions, it doesn't matter as much. You can easily support your family on $10 mil/year as $12 mil/year. Which is true. But, there's always more to the story. And ego plays a HUGE part in it. Balta, if you don't have that kind of ego, then kudos to you, because that's a great trait to have. Work cuz you love it, not for the accolades or the cash. But, I don't think your job puts you in the public eye like athletes. No one boos you if you screw up day-to-day, calls you names like Princess Dye or Judy Garland, rips you apart in the papers and then calls you the savior or MVP of the team the next. Plus, you don't have an agent in your ear saying, "You are better than the dollar amount they are offering," over and over again. There are players out there that don't care and I wish Jermaine were more outspoken about what he did. Because maybe more players will get the message. BUT, only one team wins every year...so in lieu of that, get yo money!!!
  15. QUOTE(rowandrules83 @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 05:51 PM) i don't know if it was about necessarily about being the highest paid cf or whatever. He helped that franchise finally win a title, then when he hit free agency, he got offered 4 yrs 40 mil (the same amount they gave renteria, who wasn't even on the 04 team), and the whole time during the free agency period, they discussed trades for the likes of crisp and j. reed, making it seem like signing him wasn't their top priority. To contrast, when varitek hit free agency the year before they made signing him their top priority. if the red sox truly absolutely wanted him back they could have spared a few million more, seeing as they have the 2nd highest payroll in the land And those same fans who loved him? if he re-signed for less and struggled last year, don't think for a second they wouldn't turn on him. Fans expect "loyalty" from players, and we'll be loyal to them...as long as they don't suck, then we forget about loyalty because "We pay their salaries, we have a right to boo." Very well put. And I might also add that these players have surrounded themselves with people that tell them how good they are...agents, lawyers, advisors...and that's not including friends and family. So, just about every player overvalues himself. And don't forget...when a hack like Jason Marquis can get 3/$21mil, or Ted Lilly gets 4/$40mil, what does that say to someone who outperforms him, like a Buehrle? Wouldn't you feel the same way, Balta? I know I would.
  16. Win at Iowa and they are definitely in. Lose at Iowa and a win in the Big 10 tourney, they are in. Lose at Iowa and lose first round Big 10 tourney...squeeze your butt cheeks, cuz it's going to be close, but probably out.
  17. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 08:09 AM) Chief Black Hawk is a major figure in Illinois history - more so than the Illini tribe, really. He was among the last resistors in the area. The army eventually tracked him down, chased his band across northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, and eventually ran them into the Mississippi where most were shot to death trying to cross. So, like the Illini name, the name itself is reverent, not offensive. You don't see some cartoonish feather-headed mascot parading around the ice at half time, do you (admitedly, its been a few years since I've been to a Hawks game). No you don't, but the U of I has also been criticized about it's use of the Chief logo on clothing and on the field. In fact, when I was there, they changed the mid-field logo from the Chief to the Block I. And I'm pretty sure that the university has a pretty tight rein on the use on clothing and other things they sell. You don't see it on uniforms at all. So...the Blackhawks should be included in this discussion, although I think it's the best uniform in all of sports, too bad what's inside that uniform...not so good.
  18. QUOTE(longshot7 @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 08:29 AM) Agree with this, with the following example. The Chicago Blackhawks is not an offensive nickname, but if they had an Indian chucking a tomahawk on ice skates would be. Just like the Tomohawk Chop is racist & degrading. I think you need to explain more than that. Not the second part, but why you think Blackhawks is not offensive.
  19. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 06:53 AM) Consistent doesn't necessarily mean all-or-none about names. For example, I think names like "Illini" or "Utes" are perfectly fine, but I find Chief Illiniwek to be unacceptable (so I think the right decision was made here). Why? Because the name is not an insult, but the chief and its behavior are. So, I'm consistent in my view. Just don't be offensive. If U of I really wanted to keep the chief, all they had to do was work with the tribe(s) and come up with a way for it not to be insulting. If they couldn't make that work, then just don't do it. Of course, I have it easy, being a Cyclone. Can't really offend a weather system. But even that name is inaccurate, really, since a cyclone is just any low pressure system. The problem being, what if another tribe found the Seminole offensive? Or anyone for that matter. So what if the Seminole tribe is ok with it. The way it is now, if one person finds it offensive, then it should be done away with. Illini is part of the state name, so I don't think that was ever in real danger. Ute, same thing.
  20. QUOTE(Texsox @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 05:26 AM) NSS, here is the balancing act. When the prisoners are put to work, they are now competing with workers that did not commit a crime. The government stops buying from Company A in Tallahassee and starts buying from Pontiac Prison. Unless the work is self-sustaining, like, ranching or farming for food for the inmates. Fixing problems with the prison itself. Plumbing/electrical...ok, maybe not electrical. But, make the prison self-sustaining...no work, no eat. It's no different than you and I not doing chores growing up.
  21. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Feb 25, 2007 -> 07:15 PM) Thats actually been my personal stance all along. My experience with my own mascot being retired, as well as high schools around where I grew up makes me think that all should be retired no matter who supports what. The NCAA obviously has a double standard in place, and its one that is somewhat influenced by money. The funny part of the argument is that many high schools who arent governed by the same body were made to give up their mascots. At the same time we have considered professional sports teams untouchable by the same law. Of course this only applies to Native American mascots as the Washington Bullets were made to give up their name because it was too "hostile". There should be a blanket rule covering all of sports or at least all college sports. There shouldn't be any exceptions and its the exceptions which are making people more angry about their collective situations. If all schools no matter what were made to give up their native American mascots, then i don't think there would be nearly as much emotional grief for as many people as there has been. That's the heart of the situation right there. Nothing to complain about if all institutions had to do away with it.
