QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 04:40 PM) I am not for trades for trades sake, but if something can put us over or provide a need go for it. Considering the market, there are plenty of players available for teams that could help them win a division or a wild card. Burnett is probably that player for the O's. The only player that really would put us over the top that is remotely close to obtainable is probably Roger Clemens. Even then, he most likely won't be traded as the Astros make a run at the NL Wild Card. When you look at the rosters of selling teams, probably the best guy out there is Wagner who isn't a significant upgrade (mostly since closer isn't a need position and we have several very good bullpen options), at least to the point where the World Series is a sure thing. A utility player most likely isn't going to make the difference between making the playoffs and wining the World Series, although you're right in that Randa helps the Sox by spelling Crede. Other than that, no available player is going to put us over the top. The difference making players are on contenders or are otherwise untradeable. When I commented that flexibility doesn't imply an unnecessary trade, I basically agree with you in your idea of what is a necessary and unnecessary trade. I was making the comment because some feel that AJ Burnett or a similar major player is a necessary trade and that not trading for him shows that JR isn't truly committed financially to this team. That's not true. It's just a reality that the difference makers in MLB aren't going to get traded during the season.

QUOTE(Balance @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 04:05 PM) Can Gload play third base at all? Especially in light of Crede's sore back? I'm not the only dunce!

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 04:27 PM) Then they BS'd everyone when they said the payroll this year was to give them the "flexibility" to go for it in June/July like they said at Soxfest. Flexibility doesn't imply making an unnecessary trade.

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 03:50 PM) Gload is not wanted on this team. I don't know how many ways this can be said. Maybe next year. Is Gload the new Wunsch?
-
QUOTE(kapkomet @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 03:49 PM) Dream on. Gload is not coming back. Yeah he is, too play 3B.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 03:39 PM) I'm glad you clarified just how your computer got stickier. As I started reading your post, I got concerned. This thread has taken a turn for the worse. Sorry guys.

I believe KW. At least, he better be telling the truth. It's not worth the cost to get Schmidt or Burnett if it involves trading talent from the MLB team. Maybe we'll get a minor deal off, but just adding Frank back to our line-up was a pretty good "acquisition". Gload will be nice, if he ever gets up, too.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 03:10 PM) Will do Score. Now are we talking monitor, keyboard, tower, or what?

QUOTE(soxfan3530 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 02:14 PM) this thread is one of the dumbest yet. Oh, this board is full of intelligent threads. For example, check out the genius that started today's Ross Gload thread.

QUOTE(TheDybber @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 02:58 PM) No, for the love of god...don't. Why? It'd make one helluvan avatar.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 02:55 PM) If we get Wagner I will hump my computer when I read the story Do you have a webcam? Can you film that?

Somebody might want to show that to Kasey Blake.

It's a great article, I must say. I think everyone on this board has to admit that they're waiting for the bottom to fall out.

Burnett blockbuster would be a big risk for O's

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 12:14 PM) Please note...those last 2 points would also apply to anyone who tried to sign/trade for Burnett. and Burnett isn't even that great of a pitcher. -
QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 09:40 AM) He had a bad outing against a team that owns him. I feel like every team owns him.

was I serious? you'll never know EDIT: Honestly, I forgot about the throwing lefty thing. You see a lot of lefties playing infield, but I forgot that they had to throw righty. Also, haven't seen Gload play in a long time. Oops.

Gload is getting healthy, it sounds like and hopefully will join the team soon. My question: can he play 3B to spell Crede sometimes?
-
I'd say the purpose of this potential trade is mostly to free up a roster spot so that Jenks can remain on the 25 man roster once Duque comes up. I don't know about the prospects in question, but they're probably really only an added bonus.

QUOTE(Texsox @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 07:20 AM) The bullpen isn't Ozzies strong suit. And yet, Marte, Politte, Cotts, and Hermanson are all doing very well in 2005. Actually, Politte, Cotts, and Hermanson are posting career best stats in ERA (and Hermanson had a few damn good seasons as a starter and Politte has had some nice seasons in the past, too). Maybe Ozzie doesn't know a damn thing about the bullpen and that's just luck and three guys are having career best seasons for him... or maybe he knows exactly what he's doing to get the most out of his guys. Given that the success and failure of bullpen pitchers is highly situational (this is supported by the high level of fluctuation in the performance of relievers from year to year), I'm more inclined to believe that it's something that Ozzie, or at least Cooper, is doing.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 08:50 PM) Pedro has been awesome. Schilling has been a non-factor. Quite right, but I meant moreso the tandem to raise the point that maybe the scariest potential postseason tandem presented is the one of the White Sox. The only one that really comes close is the Astros.
-
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 08:36 PM) The Red Sox also had Curt Schilling and Pedro Martinez. I like Mark Buehrle and Freddy Garcia -- I like 'em a lot, but they're no Schilling/Pedro. Yeah, but Schilling/Pedro are no Schilling/Pedro this season, either.

QUOTE(Winning Ugly @ Jul 16, 2005 -> 10:56 PM) I don't know who started the Peavy rumor, but it's a pipe dream that's not gonna happen. Waste of thread space. I think you can argue a lot of the rumors are a waste of thread space...

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 17, 2005 -> 12:07 PM) Its been reported today that the Red Sox will have AJ by the end of the week, I think its a dead issue. Wasn't Schmidt a White Sox about 3 weeks ago?
-
QUOTE(sircaffey @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 02:56 PM) Even if we didn't sign Burnett after this season, the trade wouldn't necessarily be a rental in a way. We still free up the $8+ million Jose would have made. That could easily go to someone of similar impact that Burnett would have. AJ Burnett and Kevin Millwood will be the best two FA pitchers on the market next year, given that Schmidt's option is picked up. If you mean spend the money for a pitcher of Burnett's impact, that is unlikely.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 15, 2005 -> 02:41 PM) I'm not sure what you mean but by this year's performance and other than Santana's 04 2nd half, MB > Johan. Hmm... I'm trying to make a point. Basically, Burnett might be a little bit better (or maybe not once you adjust for league and park) than Contreras. Even if he is better, he isn't really in a different class. I would say Burnett and Contreras are both ideally suited as #3-5 staters (bottom of the rotation). Neither has produced like an ace. Thus... why trade? You're giving up something (either Marte or Everett and maybe a prospect) to get something that really isn't a significant upgrade over what you have.
