  1. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 03:45 PM) Here's how I read that: Bmac would be expendable because the sox would try to sign AJ to a long term deal. If the sox got Schmidt, then it might only be for the next few months, maybe 1 yr. Then Bmac would be ready That's very insightful. I bet that's actually KW's line of thinking.
  2. Anyone think Frank needs some bench and we should try Everett at DH for a bit?
  3. QUOTE(daa84 @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 09:17 AM) I heard the Mike and Mike report too, but what i heard a few days ago, i believe it was gammons (i know not everyone thinks hes reliable) but he said the giants have been shopping schmidt for about a month. if you ask me, they are trying to drive up the price by sayin he isnt available. IMO the giants are nuts to not move him. they are better off trading him for prospects now ,and then using the 10 million dollars they save in free agency next year. this is the real trade KW should be lookin at. it will cost less than burnett in terms of prospects/ml players, youll get a guaranteed year of schmidt next year, whereas burnett could be a rental, and i personally feel that he is a better pitcher and if he gets even close to being 03-04 schmidt, he can dominate a playoff series better than burnett can. to me this deal is a way better option than burnett, who will prolly go to the Os anyways The Giants can attack 2006 in a few ways, but I think they definitely expect to compete if Bonds comes back. The past few seasons, their recipe for success was to have the best MLB pitcher (Schmidt) and the best slugger (Bonds) and to surround them with some good/role-playing talent. Clearly they are hurting without Bonds and with an injured Schmidt. Their roster is pretty decent, so if they think Bonds is coming back in 2006, then they should probably keep Schmidt and make one last run at it. If they think Bonds is coming back, but want to trade Schmidt, they need to get (via the trade) at least one or two players ready to make an impact next season to compete, plus to use the bonus cash to get another good role-player. If Bonds doesn't come back, then they're probably best to go into rebuilding mode and get as many prospects as they can for Schmidt. Without Bonds, they'll have a tough time mustering the offense necessary to win in 2006. Thus, they should try to assemble a crop of young players to compete in 2007. Thus, their actions this trading deadline should reflect their expectations on Bonds return in 2006. If they think he's coming back, hold onto Schmidt or only trade for a few major league ready players. Otherwise, prospects are fine. I'm guessing their thinking over the last month is that Bonds is less likely to play all or a significant portion of 2006 and that is why their asking price has apparently dropped.
  4. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 07:29 AM) The Sox lost last night? And the Twins won? OH MY GOD! SOMEBODY NEEDS TO GET TRADED FOR SOMEONE ELSE! HEADS NEED TO ROLL! SOMEONE NEEDS TO DO.......SOMETHING!! THIS IS BAD PEOPLE! NOT BAD LIKE IM NAKED AT SCHOOL IN MY DREAM BAD, BUT MORE LIKE I AM NAKED AT AN ALL MALE-SCHOOL IN MY DREAM BAD. THATS REALLY BAD PEOPLE. IF THE WHITE SOX DONT TRADE JERMAINE DYE AND AARON ROWAND AND BRANDON MCCARTHY FOR KEN GRIFFEY JR STRAIGHT UP, THEN IT WILL GET WORSE! PLEASE, SOMEONE DO SOMETHING! A 5 GAME WIN STREAK TO START THE SECOND HALF AND A 12 GAME LEAD OVER THE TWINS ISNT ENOUGH. ITS TIME TO PANIC PEOPLE! LOUD NOISES
  5. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 08:33 AM) But if we lose, a lot of people will be here to say that we should have done something...and in that case, they'll be right. But if we lose and we did something (for hypothetical purposes, say we obtain one of Guardado, Wagner, Griffey, Schmidt, or Burnett), then what? People will say we shouldn't have done something? Clearly he's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't. I know we all want to win the WS really bad, but I don't know if that's should be the basis for judging KWs deadline moves.
  6. Just so everybody is aware, Schmidt last night: ND 7 IP 7 H 3 ER 2 BB 10 K Game was in San Fran. Is his consistency starting to come back?
  7. QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Jul 20, 2005 -> 07:05 AM) f*** McCarthy...we have a chance at something here, we need to go for it. If we don't make the trade, we still have a chance at something here. Giving up 3 pitchers (although one is designated and one is somewhat estranged), just doesn't seem like a good business decision (think the Ritchie trade).
  8. QUOTE(SHAFTR @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 11:34 PM) Contreras, Takatsu and a high prospect (McCarthy?) for Schmidt. I'd do it if they would. I could feel good with Buerhle, Garcia, Schmidt & Garland playoff rotation. I could live with that as long as the high prospect isn't McCarthy.
  9. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 10:46 AM) We clearly need him to also be the 7th outfielder on this team before we bring him back. He's gotta take his time learning to play 3B
  10. QUOTE(ISF @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 10:09 AM) Guys, it's clear you don't stand a chance in hell against the red Sox in the playoffs. Clement over Buerhle easy. Arroyo over Garland, no contest. Schilling/Foulke is in a different galaxy than Hermy/Politte. I just don't see how you guys can drink that much kool-aid.... He forgot to tell us Wakefield over Garcia.
  11. QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 09:41 AM) Red Sox had a good pen last year. Foulke and Embree were good, Myers, Timlin, and they had Arroyo in there, too. Not sure you could say that pen stacks up as nice as ours does now.
  12. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 09:28 AM) Very f***ing doubtful. They may want Shingo, but Arroyo? He's a solid pitcher and they are in a 3 team battle that might only have one team survive to see the post season. Agreed. Arroyo is too much. Maybe Mueller, if we're lucky. To whoever said you need a great pen to win the WS... did you see who won the WS last year?
  13. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 08:23 AM) Umm, nothing really makes a team a sure-fire winner. But it does give us the best bullpen out there. And that my friend, is what wins playoff games. If you read this board long enough, everything wins playoff games: starting pitching, bullpen, slugging offense, manufacturing runs... Anyway, I think Wagner would have a similar price tag to Burnett. Wade's job is on the line and I doubt he'll give up a huge piece of his team if he can't get current MLB contributors.
  14. QUOTE(LosMediasBlancas @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 08:34 AM) f*** Maggs and every former Sox player, true fans hate them all. and f*** the wave while we have our pants down.
  15. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 08:38 AM) I've been hearing from all over(an example is BBTN) that the Phillies won't deal him, Utley or Abreu at the deadline. They think Wagner is a huge part of the team and that he's a difference between wins and losses. Gammons also said that he expects Wagner to resign with Philly. No way Wagner resigns in Philly, he hates the city and the team. The day he was traded there he swore he'd sign with St. Louis when his contract was up and make the Astros regret the trade. I think he restated a similar comment recently.
  16. Ed Wade's job is on the line. He won't trade an MLB star for at least MLB talent to try and make one last desperation run this season.
  17. QUOTE(HSC's Biggest Fan @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 07:25 AM) Can't beat the Living on a Prayer sing along Great song.
  18. QUOTE(retro1983hat @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 07:04 AM) The WAVE is so against what being a Sox fan is all about. Oh really? I forgot that all Sox fans are actually Puritans and that we're not allowed to have fun or do dumb stuff from time to time. Uh-oh, I just saw a girl's ankles, I guess I should go scourge myself. I'll be back in a few minutes, guys.
  19. Just a quick guess, but we are 31-5 against AL Central after yesterday? And we are 62-29 overall? Therefore... we're 31-24 against non AL Central teams, by my math.
  20. You know, when the game is in hand, there's nothing more fun than doing the wave. During blow-outs, we do it all the time at ND Stadium. I know as a hard core fan that I'm supposed to hate it, but it's really fun when you do it at the right time. So I'm an idiot.
  21. Does Wagner transform this team into a sure-fire World Series winner? No. Therefore, we don't need him.
  22. QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 05:54 PM) :sleep You'd think by now other teams fans wouldn't come on here talking trash, I guess not. It's all Hawk's fault! Is Mr. Logan banned yet?
  23. QUOTE(fry the twinkies @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 05:54 PM) I believe those waiver wire rules only apply after July 31. You are correct. Designating for assignment basically means that the team is out of options on a player (or never had them to begin with). Placing a player on waivers is a totally different situation.
  24. QUOTE(fry the twinkies @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 05:43 PM) Phftt... The Sox have plenty of speed. Pods, Gooch, Crash You're right about Pds. I have no idea who Crash is... Ozuna? Yes, Ozuna is fast, too. But Gooch isn't fast. Don't make that mistake. I'd say we're fine with Ozuna off the bench to use as a pinch runner in a playoff situation. Having Harris would be a luxury.
  25. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 04:57 PM) Jeff Weaver is a boras client just like Derek Lowe. There is about the same chance as Ronny Woo taking over for SouthPaw as our mascot as this happening. Does agent matter at this point? Lowe already has a fat contract. As with all trades, it depends what we'd have to give up for Lowe and how much the Dodgers would pay for him. I'm lukewarm on such a deal at best. 4.27 ERA with a 5-10 record in a pitcher's park? Ewww.
