QUOTE(ZoomSlowik @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 03:06 PM) The Marlins also didn't have the best record in baseball, or a closer who is 17 for 18 in save situations, or three starters with an ERA under 3.30. They're a team that needed some help in order to get to the playoffs in the first place, and they just barely snuck into the playoffs. Then things started breaking their way. Additionally, Urbina was somewhat of a risk. He came from the Rangers with an ERA around 4.19.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 02:53 PM) Boston owns Contreras. Prior to 2001, the playoffs owned Randy Johnson. Things change. My memory is short and that was a long time ago... what were those trades?

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 02:31 PM) Would you mortgage the future for a WS title??? I would, in a heartbeat. There comes a time when you get one chance to take it all, and you do what is necessary to go the final step. Look at cubs fans, all they can talk about it what if, what if. I dont want to be content with just making hte playoffs, I want to win it, if it means trading a prospect, then so be it. Because a prospect is just that, someone who is not proven. And there are NO cant-miss prospects. I would trade a future role player for a title any day of the week, hands down. There are NO can't-miss win you the World Series players, either.

Balta, you're on fire, Bravo! Anyways, you're exactly right. This team is good enough to get to the post season as it is. The question remains if we will have the necessary "play-off heroes" on our squad to go the distance. We have enough talented role players that I think we're set for the post-season. Mortgaging the future is a mistake at this point. If we can get a great player cheaply, then that's really great and I'd appluad KW for his shrewd GM skills. Otherwise, I think we should be pretty happy with the squad.

I love second base.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 01:06 PM) A trade can save a team, like the 2004 BoSox, or it can really hurt a team and seriously damage its future, as would have happened if the Marlins or Angels went shopping. Bravo! Since I'm silly and lazy and don't want to look something up... who did the 2004 BoSox trade for during the season that was such a big deal? If you're referring to the Nomar deal, was it really that big?

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 10:21 AM) its ok to dream big Wedge, I wont stop you. Thanks. Hey, did any one hear the rumor that we might be after Chavez? if you think I'm serious, check the battery on your sarcasm detector.

QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Jul 1, 2005 -> 10:07 AM) Carl Everett of the Chicago White Sox. Everett for Lowe?

Hey guys! I heard a rumor that we might be interested in trading for Eric Chavez, the 3B from Oakland. He had a tough start to the season, but he's really turned it on latley and his defense is something else! \newbie

QUOTE(Dam8610 @ Jun 30, 2005 -> 10:12 PM) The only team I can think of that has a competitive 1-2-3 to Buehrle-Garland/Garcia would be St. Louis's 1-2-3 of Mulder/Morris/Carpenter in any order, because one isn't much better than the other two, but all 3 are VERY solid. Mulder's been pretty brutal this year (not bad, but not up to his usual), but he could right himself by October, I suppose.

Twins in a 2 game set.

THIS IS OZZIE'S FAULT!

Everyone in this draft sucks. It's going to turn out like the 2000 draft.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 01:46 PM) And how has El Duque faired lately? What is his prognosis? Rest didn't help him last time. Schmidt has won 3 in a row. Using your logic, Houston would never have traded for Randy Johnson in 1998. He was horrible in Seattle that year, and was going to a bandbox where he dominated. If Schmidt is consistanly throwing 94 or 95 then its a pretty good gamble to go for it all. Did Johnson help Houston get to the World Series in 1998? I believe the answer is no. What did Johnson cost Houston? Two future All-Stars. So was it worth it to Houston? Half a season of a stud pitcher for 5 or 6 years of two All-Stars.
-
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 01:28 PM) Career wise I don't know. I think Duque has a better ERA. Past few years, I'll give you the argument that he's better. As far as right now, Schmidt= or > El Duque, but they aren't far off in comparison as of right now. Precisely... they have comparable ERAs despite Schmidt pitching in a pitcher's league and park.
-
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 01:17 PM) OK. I'm dropping it now. Schmidt >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>El Duque That's all I have to say. I disagree. Schmidt>>El Duque I'm being half serious.
-
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 01:13 PM) Jesus Christ. I don't think he's that far off.

Is Baj one of the Untouchables? Might he go?

QUOTE(VAfan @ Jun 29, 2005 -> 09:34 AM) I've advocated a trade for Schmidt and Vizquel with the Sox giving up Contreras, Uribe, Anderson, Gload, and a lower prospect (or their choice of Takatsu/Vizcaino). Isn't the whole point of trading for Schmidt so that Schmidt can replace El Duque/McCarthy in the rotation? Doing this really doesn't affect this, right?
-
OK. If you watched the game tonight, you saw a great performance by a great pitcher almost go for naught. Would Jason Schmidt have helped our offense tonight? We have had plenty of starting pitching thus far, and I don't think it will drop off to a significant level. Now, consider a few weeks ago when Frank came back to the line-up. Remember the effect that seemed to have on the rest of the team? Remember how the Sox have generally put up better offensive numbers since then? That should tell you something about the effect that even adding a solid regular bat to the line-up would have (a la Randa or someone that can hit consistently from the SS spot). Then imagine if we got Chavez or the ilk. We didn't lose the 2000 playoffs because of a lack of pitching. We lost because our bats disappeared. I'm concerned that we'll lose in the 2005 playoffs for the same reason: no bats to begin with.

QUOTE(qwerty @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 06:26 PM) Fine these f***ers who do not swing. 25,000$ each time someone strikes out looking. so you'd rather have guys swing at anything close than take a few very close pitches? -
QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 28, 2005 -> 05:04 PM) Uuuum, no. He is an All-Star. Everyday Eddie sounds good to Ozzie....reeeeeeal good. Oh, OK. We should go get Giambi, too. He's an all-star.
