02/28/07: White Sox vs. Rockies Game Thread!
Interesting that Danks pitching coach from last year said he only throws 88 to 90 mph. Most of the scouting reports when we traded for him said he throws 90 to 93 mph.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Feb 28, 2007 -> 10:17 PM) BA rocked a double. 1-for-3 on the day. Said the ball went about 450 feet. Seems like we have 4 or 5 doubles from our main offensive guys.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Feb 28, 2007 -> 10:14 PM) Just got back from class, can anyone give an overview so far? Buehrle and Garland got shelled, and Jenks threw about 10 pitches (with no control), and pulled himself after calling Ozzie and Herm to the mound. No update on his condition.

Needless to say, if there's any injury report relayed on the radio, please report it here.

QUOTE(CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Feb 28, 2007 -> 09:43 PM) 3 pitchers 3 diasters . Well, at least MacDougal is as dependable as it gets. I almost wonder if Jenks was trying to overthrow too much, as he usually starts off in the low 90s in ST.

BP might have to lower our projected win total to 70 now.

Well, this is about the worst thing that can happen. Jenks called for the trainer, and is getting pulled.

To be honest, Singleton sounds much better right now. There's not as much dead-air time, and he sounds more energetic than he did in the past.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Feb 28, 2007 -> 08:11 PM) Well on the sunny side, Mark is getting cheaper by the pitch. I'm very happy we didn't sign him to a 4 or 5 year extension. I was thinking about this over the offseason, but what Buehrle needs right now is to switch to the NL. The AL seems to have a good game plan against him after seeing him for 5 years now. BTW: this has NOTHING to do with the start of this game. Just a thought I've had about Buehrle for a few months now.

Cancel the postgame....and season. So, who can we get for Buehrle?

Frank Thomas Blue Jays Story
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Feb 28, 2007 -> 07:48 PM) Yup, cheering for an individual over the White Sox, w000000000000000000t. I'll never understand it, and trust me, there are plenty more who don't, it doesn't make any sense. I agree with you 100 percent. This is close to being as bad as people that say "oh well, I'm not mad that he hit a walkoff homer, at least (insert player's name) is on my fantasy team". I hated Timo Perez, but I still rooted for him because he was on the White Sox. On the other hand, I would never root for a player against the White Sox.

OFFICIAL 24 RETURNS THREAD
The more I watch the shows back-to-back, the more I realize how much better Prison Break is than 24. The twists and turns on Prison Break actually make sense, while the 24 stuff is so recycled.

KW on Mike North
QUOTE(Beltin @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 03:48 PM) They got the Cubs' draft picks. At 96 losses for the Cubs and another 91 for the Nationals, that should equate to a competitive team 5 or so years from now. Compared to the type of prospects they could have received for Soriano, those draft picks are mediocre. It's too bad we don't have any toolsy outfielders, as we could have gotten Soriano easily from Bowden.

KW on Mike North
QUOTE(Steve9347 @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 03:35 PM) That would have been the worst trade of all-time. And that's why Jim Bowden is an idiot and the Nats got nothing for Soriano.

KW on Mike North
QUOTE(U can putitontheboarrrrd...YES @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 03:08 PM) He did no such thing. He said that last seasons rumors of the Nats trading Soriano for player X were false and that he would not hesitate to make any deal if he thought it would help the ballclub win. You could tell exactly what he was saying about the trade, and that how he sometimes have to respond when certain trade rumors are not accurate (in this case, he said he's not someone who's afraid to pull the trigger on a trade). I actually heard a similar story about what went down with the Nationals, and that they were asking for a lot more than just McCarthy for Soriano. They were asking for McCarthy, Broadway, and Fields.
-
KW on Mike North
Even though he didn't say this in exact words, KW basically inferred that if the Nats would have taken McCarthy straight up for Soriano, he would have pulled the trigger on the trade.

JOSH FIELDS
If we're going to be anywhere near as bad as this projection believes, I hope we struggle early, which will force KW to get something in return for Buehrle at the deadline.

JOSH FIELDS
QUOTE(Felix @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 03:02 AM) Why not give Fields more time to blossom (offensively and defensively in LF) at AAA though? How do we know his year last year wasn't a fluke? I mean, it was his first REALLY good offensive year in his minor league career (and afaik, he's never played LF regularly), and I'd rather give him the time he needs to prove he's ready for the majors as opposed to rushing him and potentially screwing him up mentally. That's why I suggested we give him the chance right now to win the spot, instead of just hoping that Pods comes back from his injury. We all know that Pods is a very below average player if he's not 100 pct, and it's questionable how healthy he'll be during the first few months of the season. I don't care how crappy the coaching was during Winter Ball....it's inexcusable that Fields didn't get more playing time in the outfield this offseason.

QUOTE(ptatc @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 09:38 AM) Let's see you don't want a pitcher in the majors who hasn't proved anything however you want a hitter who isn't proven in the majors to play a position he has never played before in professional baseball? You must rank defense lower than you do speed on the hierarchy of baseball skills. I know you really dislike Floyd but to start a guy in a position he hasn't played before and expect anything good is just silly. Remeber the early years of Lee in LF? Fields is a good athlete, and compared to what Pods offers defensively in LF, I would gladly like to see Fields get a chance to prove he can play out there.

JOSH FIELDS
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Feb 27, 2007 -> 12:24 AM) I really don't think you can take anything from a performance in the first intersquad game of spring. Good or bad. These guys aren't fine tuned yet, and the intensity level is not nearly as high. As Allen Iverson said "we're talkin' about practice". Does anyone think KW has put his neck on the line with a Gavin Floyd? Its almost universally thought in baseball that this guy really can't be considered a top prospect, and KW sees him almost as elite. In a way, I can't see JR ever pulling the plug on KW, but if the offseason moves blow up in his face and the White Sox don't contend, he may not have a choice. According to someone on another site, BP has the Sox pegged at 72-90. I can't see even a worst case scenerio playing out that badly, but if it did, someone would have to be held accountable. If that happens, the Sox will go into rebuilding mode next year. There's no way that Ozzie can be a manager during that time, as he's too much of a competitor. If the Sox tank this year, I think we'll have a new Manager and General Manager. I don't want this to happen at all though, as I'd like to see us continue to compete like we have for the last decade or so. A rebuilding season so soon after a WS championship would probably cut our attendance in half.

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 11:24 PM) I was waiting for a complete overreaction to this game before making this post. Whiny Pessimists view point of today's game: If a player does well at the plate and the pitcher is one of our expected starters = our starting pitching sucks If a player does well at the plate and the pitcher is one of our minor leaguers = our minor league pitching sucks If a player does well at the plate and the pitcher is a NRI = no big deal for the batter If the pitcher is doing well and the batter is a minor leaguer = Not impressive for the pitcher and the minor league batter sucks If the pitcher is doing well and the batter is a major leaguer = Our batter sucks For those situations above it doesn't matter if he is a minor leaguer or a major leaguer. Just ignore the negative Nancy's. Or someone can just be making a general comment about a pitcher after some of the recent things being said about him in the press. It would be amazing if Floyd can be a better than average 5th starter. However, I don't think he has a great chance of succeeding if he starts off in the majors right away. If he is trying to become a sinker pitcher, then I would like to see him master it in the majors before throwing him right into the fire. The best news to come out of today is that Uribe is back and playing. Hopefully that situation is in the past. Here's a question I have: why are the Sox so scared to give Fields the chance to win the LF position? With Crede in the plans for this year, and with other players who could fill in at 3rd base if needed, why not see if Fields can adapt quickly to the position?

JOSH FIELDS
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Feb 26, 2007 -> 10:43 PM) And regardless of that, if his sinker/curve is working, he should be more than acceptable as a #5 starter in the majors. Floyd has never done anything to prove he can be a #5 starter. He's just as much of a question mark as all those busters we tried 3 years ago. Unless he clearly outpitchers the other contenders this ST, I hope he's not just handed the position by Ozzie/KW.
