Garcia to Philly for Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 04:25 PM) Except we have 5 good starters. Im actually beginning to like this deal. We got a top young arm, who had some issues under a TERRIBLE coaching staff, and a top young pitching prospect, for no-fastball freddy who is basically a one year rental player for them. The last time the market went this way for arms, the smart thing to do was stock up young cheap pitching from within your system, which we now have done. Haeger, Broadway, MC, BMAC, Floyd and Gio is a nice young stable to have. Who's this imaginary 5th starter people keep saying we have? If we traded Garland, I only count 4 guys we can legitimately say should be starting.

It's official: JR and KW are trying to give this city back to the Cubs. If we trade Garland for two mediocre players, there's going to be a lot of outcry. Not only that, but Anderson would be gone also.

The years of no 5th starter are about to return!

QUOTE(It @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 03:46 PM) Supposedly the Astros are getting Jon Garland Astros get Garland? It would be a big mistake if the Sox traded Garland. The worst thing is that if they do trade him to the Astros, I'm sure Tavares will be involved. Can we fire KW and Ozzie before this happens?

Disturbing article about the Sox's plans
QUOTE(soxpride77 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 02:15 PM) This is exactly what I was thinking, why not be a club like the Twins and A's? Develop your starting pitching in the minors, and then as soon as they get good and warrant a big contract, trade them away to restock the minors with quality young pitchers. Because we're not a small market team!

FWIW, the Sox weren't talking with Bonds today. There was no mystery team. That's why Rogers said it was a bad rumor.

QUOTE(whitesox1976 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 06:24 AM) On paper is looks like the dumbest trade I have ever seen. Nothing tops the Durham for Jon Adkins trade. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 06:25 AM) I'm actually pretty proud of myself that I've avoided saying anything reactionary or stupid in this thread seeing as how I was one of the first to post. That Thome trade thread wasn't exactly my best moment. You should put in your sig that the Sox will never go after Tejada...it's going to become tejadatalk.com around here.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 06:13 AM) He is still 42 going on 43 next July. The Steroids simply won't fix that. Yes, but the Cell is such a launching pad compared to San Fran. I try to watch as many Bonds at-bats as possible, and it's amazing the warning track power that he had last year. If he hits those same balls at the Cell, a good handful of them are in the seats.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 06:11 AM) That OBP goes down quite a bit if they actually do pitch to him. And I bet the production does quite a bit too. Bonds would hit 10-15 more homers a year if he played at the Cell compared to San Fran.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 06:03 AM) I'm not even going to comment on the whole Bonds thing unless it does happen. A lot is going through my mind with that. I'd just like to say that if the Sox do sign him (probably a 1 pct chance of this), I'll glady buy someone's season tickets from them if they want to stop rooting for the White Sox.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 06:02 AM) I for one don't have a problem with the concept of trading another starter, and I've been saying that for weeks, given this market. If we trade another starter, then who's our 5th starter?

QUOTE(Capn12 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 05:59 AM) No Fathom, I'm pretty sure that I was vocal in EVERY start he made...at least we get 5 innings of non-craptastic effort from Javy when HE pitches...I'm a huge Garcia opponent, so I don't mind us ridding ourselves of him I thought you only hated Podsednik?

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 05:59 AM) And the Williams response was that the Sox are still open for business, not that they don't intend to resign Buehrle. From what I read, he said they were open for business in regards to trading another starter.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 05:57 AM) Well, It's not the best deal I could have hoped for, but it's at least not the worst either. So where exactly did that Phil Rogers article get the quote from KW that says he's not going to resign anyone? Or is that just something Rogers is inferring (which, as far as I can tell, is the truth). Considering Rogers asked other executives for their opinion on it, I think it's 100 pct legit.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 05:55 AM) I'm with you and Rowand44 on this one. I'm going to wait for this to pan out and then react. Nothing to get you're panties in a bunch for now. Sure, we all thought we could get more for Freddy, but we don't know the type of deals that were on the table or the real value that Freddy had. Relax, take a breath, and let's not throw away the next 3 seasons because we traded away 1 player. I might be the only one, but I dreaded games where Garcia was pitching. I never was confident we'd win with him on the mound, and I hated knowing how slow he'd work and how a walk turned into a double. I'm excited at the thought of watching McCarthy start next year.

Disturbing article about the Sox's plans
QUOTE(3 BeWareTheNewSox 5 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 05:51 AM) I hate the deal, but where does Phil get that there is no chance of bringing back the other starters? Supposedly KW said that he's not going to extend anyone's deal today.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 05:51 AM) That could be true but I still think Buehrle has more value than Garcia. And let me say the only way I'm a proponent of dealing Mark is if he was honest and said he wants to break the bank this contract since it will be his last one (which I'd respect). I think the Cardinals, by missing out on Schmidt, will now have the big dough to spend on Buehrle next offseason.

Garcia to Philly for Gavin Floyd and Gio Gonzalez
Phil Rogers is the Sam Smith of baseball. I'm stunned he didn't have a full list of proposed trades for the Sox now. Also, as the article shows, the "open for business" comment was in regards to making more trades to add to the team, but rather it's in regards to trading more starting pitchers.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 05:49 AM) I don't give a flying f*** about the non smart fan, I want to win. I hate when people worry about terrible press, it's about wins, not press. And we'll never see crowds like 2006 saw again unless we win the World Series and the bandwagoners return, it's just life. Yes, but the non-smart fans are the ones who are going to the games, and that equates to higher attendance = higher payroll (or that's how it should be). Bandwagon fans are only good for baseball for that reason.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 05:48 AM) If thats the case, than we deal Buehrle for Pelfrey and Heilman or Pelfrey & Milledge or swing him for Sanchez, Melky and someone else from the Yanks. Than you end up having Jose, Garland and Vaz in your rotation as the veteran 3 and than see what sticks with the other two knowing that Floyd, Bmac, Pelfrey are all potential top of the line rotation guys and behind that you'd have Gio/Broadway/Haeger (two of which are again at least middle of the rotation and in Gio's case potential #2). After the Garcia trade, my opinion is that the you're going to have to lower your desired package by a lot.

QUOTE(EvilJester99 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 05:47 AM) Hopefully KW isn't serious about the rebuilding crap....just when you have the city by the balls you don't let go for this kind of bs. Considering KW's less than adequate ability at getting equal talent when he trades veterans, I hope he's not our GM if we do go into a rebuilding mode. However, as others have mentioned, it's pathetic to even be discussing this after the last two years and the attendance we've brought in.

QUOTE(quickman @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 05:45 AM) There you go, like I said, the rebuilding is starting now. Lets see how this affects tickets next year. back to the old plan. Even if KW is bluffing, this is terrible press. Especially considering the Cubs are spending so much money, this really looks bad for the Sox (to the non-smart fan who just bases their opinion on what they read in the papers).

QUOTE(greg775 @ Dec 7, 2006 -> 05:44 AM) Why is the Trib propaganda? That writer is very fair, he's nothing like Moronotti. He said he asked KW flat out if all those starters would be out and he said yes. I wouldn't shoot the trib messenger. And it explains the panic mode that KW went into after the Schmidt/Lilly signings.
