NCAA Refs/Gambling/Fixes
QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Mar 19, 2006 -> 07:21 PM) Fix or no fix, the NCAA and their stance on reffing is still an atrocity. Can anyone explain why Shows was placed on this specific game? The refs have sucked in college basketball all season. Is this a surprise to anyone? The Illini game wasn't even one of the 5 worst I've seen all year. The two Duke-Fla St games were much worse in my opinion, as the refs basically handed Duke the first game, and FSU the 2nd game. The only legitimate game where the refs decided the outcome of the game was when they called a bulls*** over-the-back on a Ga Tech player with .5 seconds left in a tie game. The GT player had tipped the ball in, but it was negated, and Va Tech won on FT. That was the game in which the ACC told their officials afterwards that if they make a game-deciding call, it better be right.

Injury updates: Contreras, Hermanson, Pods, Thome
Thome will have quite a few day-to-day injuries this season. Hopefully, none of them are too serious.

NCAA Refs/Gambling/Fixes
QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Mar 19, 2006 -> 06:53 PM) He's proven to be out of his mind all season, so him saying that does nothing to change my mind. Also, fixing a game now is easier than ever since people like yourself are the majority and in denial that your precious games could possibly be dirty. Fixing a game today is harder than ever. Games get so much more publicity now compared to 10 years ago, and everyone knows the point spread, etc. going into the game. Do people really know what it takes to fix a game? These games have been way too close lately for the "fix" to be in. I saw a couple of people state how they thought the refs tried to fix the Illini/AF game from Thursday. Um.....first of all, the refs would have never let Illinois get as big of a lead if they wanted to make sure AF didn't lose by 9.5. Second, how were the refs to know that Illinois would turn it over in the last minute, and that the Great Chester Frazier (this guy is terrible!) would miss his FT? Like I said earlier, the refs would have never let U of I get a big lead over UW like they did. I know someone mentioned it's cause the Illini were playing so well that they got the big lead, but the refs really helped them out at the end of the first half with all the basket and the fouls.

NCAA Refs/Gambling/Fixes
QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Mar 19, 2006 -> 04:02 PM) No, I have a feeling they did not call 6 hand checks outside the 3 pt line. ------------------------------------------------------------ And it's really easy for people that are not fans of Illinois or Indiana to just defend the refs and say it's a s***ty excuse, but if your team was involved in a game when your premier defender was not allowed to defend another teams star player you would be pissed too. But a debate about the refs is worthless because the people complaining about refs will be called homers, and the people that weren't fans of either team in the game will defend the refs. No point for this to continue. Based on the FT disparity alone, Illini fans have every right to complain about the refs. I didn't think they were great last night, and they did help UW get back into the game. However, the Illini have struggled all year picking up reach-in fouls because too many of their players don't move their feet on defense (Randle is the prime example of this). I just don't understand why Illinois didn't attack the basket more in the last 6 minutes of the game. Weber had to see the way they were calling things, and I really hope he didn't think that passing the ball around the perimeter was the best game plan. Too many games this year, he went to the stall game too early. It cost him the Penn St. game, and it cost him yesterday. Again, I have no problem with people getting upset with the refs. It's when comments about the game being fixed are made that I think people are taking their frustrations to the extreme. And yes, the NCAA would have much rather seen UCONN vs Illinois.

NCAA Refs/Gambling/Fixes
If the fix was in, then the refs would have never let Illinois get a double digit lead. I'm sorry, but saying the game was "fixed" is a pathetic statement. A person can complain all they want about the refs, but when ridiculous statements are made like that, people need to just step back and thing about what they're really saying.

NCAA Refs/Gambling/Fixes
If the fix was in, then why did the refs help out the Illini get back into the game at the end of the first half. They gave them like 4 straight basket-and-ones. A couple of those calls were very questionable. If the Illini didn't go into a stall game with about 6 minutes left on the clock, they win this game.

Wendell lumps Sosa with steroid users
Maybe I'd be more comfortable accusing Sosa of using steroids if I thought he might have ever been willing to cheat to get ahead. Now......if only he would have done something illegal like corking his bat or something along those lines?

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Mar 17, 2006 -> 10:59 PM) Now you're just patronizing me. Seriously though, Twins first 2005 Draft Pick (Garza--a hardthrowing pitcher) has done well in Spring Training. Why didn't we take him instead of Broadway? Or Cirillo? Oh yeah, Broadway rose his stock the last two months of college, is a lefthander, AND--most importantly--throws beneath 90. As you said, our management shouldn't concentrate on drafting Mark Buehlre's because they're rare. Let those pitchers fall into your lap. Broadway's a righty.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Mar 17, 2006 -> 10:40 PM) It's like speaking into a mirror. Meanwhile, the Twins keep producing quality reliever after quality reliever because they're not afraid to draft and develop a hard throwing righty.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Mar 17, 2006 -> 10:34 PM) fathom his control I might question, but he has been throwing triple digits since high school. He was throwing at the most 95 last ST also. That's why I said it has more to do with his mechanics than anything else. When I saw him last week, it seemed like his fastball was more of a cutter than anything else. I'm not saying it's time to give up on Jenks like it was Hermanson. It will be interesting to see if he improved his mechanics tomorrow.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Mar 17, 2006 -> 10:28 PM) He obviously throws hard, but why is he throwing 95 and Jenks 91 if it takes hard throwers longer to get ready? Shouldn't there be a little concern that Jenks is down a consistent 7 or 8 mph on his fastball right now? Of course there should be concern with Jenks. We heard two straight spring trainings that Koch's velocity would come over the course of the month. Jenks's mechanics looked terrible the last two times I saw him pitch. People act like he has a track record of 10 years worth of success in the majors. He's as much of a question mark as anyone else on the big league team. We don't have any other closing options right now either.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Mar 17, 2006 -> 10:26 PM) Of course. It's sort of disappointing when the best thing going in our minors concerning pitching is Boone Logan. When you continue to draft guys who top out at 90 mph, they're not going to have an extremely high ceiling. As we've all talked about, for every Buehrle or McCarthy, there's hundreds of pitchers who just don't have enough stuff to pitch at the big league level. Thankfully, we're spending more money now, which is the best way to assure quality pitching at the big league level.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Mar 17, 2006 -> 10:19 PM) How did Redding pitch? Did Logan pitch? I don't think Logan pitched. Redding might have given up 1 run in his 2 innings, but he still had the same lousy stuff he typically has.

QUOTE(iWiN4PreP @ Mar 17, 2006 -> 10:15 PM) yeah why is kong in? and we just got screwed with that call. If we're going to pitch guys who couldn't even retire the side 1-2-3 in Little League, I don't see the point of having regular starters on the field.

I have to ask this.......why in the world is Paul Konerko still in the game? Put someone else in the game....no reason to have your superstar out there still.

Jenks lost velocity?
QUOTE(LVSoxFan @ Mar 17, 2006 -> 09:40 PM) I've been saying this to my super-Cubs-fan co-worker for years. What the hell is with the pitching coach over there, if these guys keep getting hurt? You would think that, since the entire franchise is built around them, there'd be an outcry, but no: year in, year out, it's the same sad story. Thank God for Don Cooper. I think a lot of it has to do with the Cubs devloping pitchers who have big time stuff. All of their guys seem to have 95 mph fastballs and biting sliders. Those are high-risk pitchers, and it can create a lot of injuries. Meanwhile, the Sox don't seem to have as many of those types of pitchers, and they've had less injuries as of late.

What concerns me about the offense so far is the inability to string together consecutive hits. After about 15 games in spring training, you'd think the team be batting over .250. There's still time to get going before the season begins, and it would be nice to see it happen sooner than later.

Todd Walker for Luis Matos rumor
QUOTE(redandwhite @ Mar 16, 2006 -> 11:28 PM) I like what Todd Walker brings to the table, the Cubs are stupid to get into a war with such a class act. Walker's a class act? He hasn't learned to keep his mouth shut in the press, and there's some things about him off the field which are startling. I do think he's a super hitter though, and should start for the Cubs. BTW redandwhite, I'm not attacking your thought here. Rather, I just get annoyed when I hear Walker whine and b**** in the media every other week. As much as I hate the Cubs, I think they'd be better off just getting rid of him.
