QUOTE(RockRaines @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 10:08 PM) I personally was saying for example. The good thing about our staff, which nobody usually factors into the quality of it. Is that none of our pitchers seem to be situational guys. You think guys like Mike Myers etc who are side arm or sb pitchers, and can just come in for one batter, get out a lefty, and that is all they can do. Cotts is just as effective vs righties, Jenks can pitch to both, as well as polite. We have at least three guys who can pitch is any situation, long, short, situational and closing roles. Thats why Marte being gone doesnt make me think we are weaker. I felt for along time that he was the weak link in the pen. I think we will see that I was right. Lets just see how Ozzie reacts, and how our players react. Well said. Ozzie just needs to play this as a 3 week season, and he needs to try and win every game possible with the best players on the field in the biggest spots. If we lose, I want it to be cause Cotts, Politte, Jenks, or Hermanson got beat, and not cause Ozzie was trying to see if David Sanders could get a big lefty out in the 7th, etc.
-
Why does everyone want Cotts to be a situational lefty? He should clearly be a one inning guy who can go anywhere from the 6th to the 8th inning. Ozzie will also use Politte in the 8th inning frequently instead of Jenks, as he probably feels like Politte deserves the set-up role.
-
I have a crazy idea....lets just go with our best relievers in a situation that best fits their abilities. No more using Cotts as a situational lefty. No more bringing Jenks in to face one batter. If we get to the 9th with a close lead, BRING IN HERMANSON (as long as he's healthy).
-
We're a better team with Marte on the roster than Marte off of the roster. It's up to Ozzie to use him effectively for the time being.
-
QUOTE(joeynach @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 09:37 PM) Well Cotts has probably been underused and his ERA is currently under 2. He can face more than 1 or 2 hitter per game. Also Viscaino is highly regarded is a righty who gets lefties out. So there is 2 options. Also consider throwing Jenks out there to blow everyone away. Viz has had a lot more troubles against lefties this season than he did last year. Last year, he used a very solid splitter to get lefties out. This year, he's been all slider, all the time.
-
Why in the world would you release him? Keep him on the team, hope he gets his ass in gear over the next 3 weeks, and then package him in a trade for offense during the offseason. Releasing him solves absolutely nothing.

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 08:56 PM) You can have an IQ of 2 and lead a team to the best record in the AL if your team loves you and will run through walls for you, along with catching fire at the same time. Case in point, Ozzie Guillen. Ozzie is quite possibly the worst in game manager in the majors. There's no other way around it. It was looked over early on in the year because the team had a knack for coming back in a big way...you haven't seen that nearly as much in the latter part of the season, thus resulting in a slightly above .500 record in the second half of the season, along with inconsistency, and Ozzie's moves are being magnified now because of it.

Who's your game 1 starter for the playoffs?

QUOTE(rangercal @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 08:36 PM) OK, Who voted Duke? Holy cow, Ozzie Guillen posts on Soxtalk!!! Quick, someone set up a poll asking who should leadoff in game 1 of the playoffs, and put Timo as an option. He'll fall right into that trap. -
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 08:20 PM) BMAC is going to start on sat. IM expecting an announcement later this week about El Duque going on the DL Why would they put him on the DL? No reason to at this point of the season.

QUOTE(longshot7 @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 07:56 PM) Again, who cares? If someone wants to put something into their own body, it's fine by me. Considering that there's been a noticeable drop-off in production by many of the baseball players that have been rumored to be on steroids in the past, it creates a situation where a lot of teams are extremely overpaying certain players based on steroid-enhanced numbers. Thus, you have teams that are struggling because they're not the same players that they used to be when they received their big money deal. Let me guess, you're the type of fan who doesn't care if your favorite college team pays their athletes, since everyone else is doing it?
-
QUOTE(longshot7 @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 07:50 PM) 1. Who cares? Anything to get your team is W is good in my book. 2. Good. I wish more players were on them. Good grief. Yeah, I'm sure the Orioles are so proud of their current roid user Raffy, and their washed-up former roid user in Sosa. It's going to be very interesting when these guys start dropping dead from heart attacks likely caused by years of steroid use. Check out what has happened to so many wrestlers once they reach their 40s after using roids for a long time.

QUOTE(Jeckle2000 @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 07:45 PM) If it was BMAC vs Santana we would win... Just because he's on fire... However Ozzie isn't smart enough to want to stop the bleeding. Yeah, maybe McCarthy could throw a no-hitter against the Twins. Basically seems like that's the only way we can beat Santana.

QUOTE(CYGarland @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 07:36 PM) Freddy. He's proven to be a big game pitcher, plus he has postseason experience. I'd much rather save Garcia and Buehrle for road games, assuming the Sox have home field IF they make it. -
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 07:37 PM) So why waste one of our good pitchers when we can save them for a winnable match up? Exactly, that's why I was sarcastically thanking Gardenhire.
-
Also, I'm done "thanking" Ozzie. It was just a matter of time before people finally caught on that he's not the sharpest of managers.
-
QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 07:36 PM) Why not thank Ozzie? L - Duque would be a disasterous choice. I have no confidence we can beat Santana, no matter who's on the mound.
-
Well....Saturday is a loss. Thanks Gardenhire!

Jon Garland. He's been our top pitcher against the best teams all season. -
QUOTE(longshot7 @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 06:47 PM) Right now: game 1 - Contreras game 2 - McCarthy game 3 - Garcia game 4 - Garland game 5 - Buehrle (repeat) McCarthy won't be starting in the playoffs. To think he would pitch before Buehrle and Garland is not giving those two guys enough respect for getting us this far this season, but also is completely ignoring the type of manager that Ozzie is.

QUOTE(soxfan3530 @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 05:35 PM) we could really use a sweep here boys! lets get it rollin' Can we ban the word "sweep" from soxtalk?
-
We're going to need Marte down the stretch more against teams like the Indians and Twins than we would likely need him in the playoffs. I know Marte has been struggling, but this team needs him. If he's not available, Ozzie has to make better use out of guys like Cotts and Jenks.
-
I guess the Sun Times has a crystal ball and can see into the future that the Sox have made the playoffs.
-
QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Sep 13, 2005 -> 04:36 PM) If only I had the power, I would banish all playoff threads until we clinch. No kidding. That's why no matter what my response is, I put in the disclaimer of "If we make the playoffs"! The thing is, as much as people like you and I complain about these threads, it doesn't have one ounce of influence on what happens on the field.

The lead female is just a terrible actress. The show is entertaining, and it definitely reminds me of 24 with all of the twists and turns.

Bring back PK, get rid of Frank and Everett. Everett doesn't bring enough to the team besides his streaky power. I'd rather find someone who can help execute a little better, and isn't such a health risk.
