White Sox vs Red Sox - 8/12/05
Great job getting the Sox right back into the dugout by Buehrle.

Nice to see that outside corner get called there.

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 11:23 PM) Anyone think that Iguchi should've sat today because of his inability to hit a curve? No

This ump seems to have a small zone, which will be interesting tonight because these are two of the best pitchers in baseball at hitting the corners.

White Sox vs Red Sox - 8/12/05
QUOTE(jphat007 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 11:20 PM) It was the last couple of days without our ace on the mound. Boston's offense is better, but not THAT much better. Though I would agree that 2 runs won't be enough. Boston handles Burly pretty well. Of course, stranger things have happened than the Red Sox scoring less than 2 runs. However, with the way they've been hitting at home, I don't think it's irrational to say they'll score more than 2 runs.

First time through the lineup, and some of our guys are way out in front of that curveball. We cashed in on the error to get 2 unearned runs though....very good start for the offense.

Rowand just hammered that ball. Lets keep it going, as 2 runs will not be enough tonight!

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
QUOTE(South Side Fireworks Man @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 09:17 PM) The team that worries me most about claiming Griffey before the Sox is the Angels. They might want him for the same role we do--DH and occasional OFer. Let's hope we hear something soon. I think if the Angels don't grab him, he's ours. You do know that the Reds have to agree to the trade, right? Griffey Jr. passing through waivers is about 1/100th of the problem. Unless the Reds ownership has a trade of heart, he's not coming here.

I thought the Yanks only paid for some of the contract this year, and not next year.

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 06:19 PM) Maybe Marte, but I don't see them trading Count. I don't think BMac will be ready next year. I think they'll just let Count and El Duque ride out their current contracts and then when they're up, BMac will at least take Duque's spot. Considering that we were offering Contreras to any and all takers before the trade deadline, and Ozzie's preference of Duque over Contreras....I think it's very likely we try to trade him in the offseason. He's going to be making a lot of money next season, and with only one year left on his deal, some teams around the league might be very interested in trading for him and hoping for the best.

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
QUOTE(beck72 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 06:04 PM) Esp with the sox probably locking up guys like AJ, Garland and crede, payroll should increase. I don't think Sox will lock up Crede to a multi-year deal. Also, I fully anticipate the Sox trying to trade Contreras and Marte this offseason.

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:57 PM) I would really like to hear the reasoning why Lindner nixed the deal in the first place. Rumor is that Lindner is looking to sell the team, and he believes the team's value diminishes by getting rid of Griffey Jr.

Cleveland's schedule down the stretch
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:48 PM) Which means we would have to go 17-32 for the Indians to catch us. That isn't really that scary. If we go 17-32 the rest of the way, we don't deserve to make it. I'm actually happy that we don't play the Indians until the end of the season. The clearest way they could make a serious run at the Sox is if they were to sweep the Sox in a series, etc.

Cleveland's schedule down the stretch
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:46 PM) Please, if you're the board pessimist, then I'm the vice-pessimist. And not even I am threatened by the Indians anymore. Fair enough. Please refer to me as Mr. Pessimist, thanks Anyways, wouldn't it be nice to see the Indians lose a game or two, especially when down 5 runs late in the game?

Cleveland's schedule down the stretch
QUOTE(upnorthsox @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:38 PM) Not sure they can catch us but that's also why this ain't over and why this is still the biggest part of our schedule right now. If we can come out of August still with a double digit lead we'll be alright but if we let it slip to 5 or 6 we're in a dogfight til the end with no chance to rest up and prepare for the playoffs. When I say this, I get bashed cause I'm the board pessimist. However, it's exactly the point I've been trying to make, and everyone planning the postseason roster and when to start benching starters is getting a little ahead of themselves. One good thing is that the A's and Angels have a lot more games against each other this season, so it would make the wild card lead even more for the Sox (in the extreme circumstance that the Indians were to catch the White Sox).

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:38 PM) Maybe they heard the collective "WHAT THE f***?!" from the Reds fanbase when they heard they could've traded Griffey and didn't? With the way Griffey has played this year, I'm not so sure they're so eager to get rid of him. If I was the Reds GM, there's not a chance in hell I'd trade Griffey unless you got a starting pitcher back in return. I actually think there's a better chance of the Sox trading Contreras and prospects for Griffey in the offseason.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:32 PM) I think we'll see almost all of them playing big roles in September just to get people rest since we have that luxury and since we don't want people to be hurt worse. And on Marte...his problem remains throwing strikes to left handers, in my opinion. Every pitch he throws is either too far outside or too far inside. He still has the pitches and the velocity, but his control has gone to sh*t. Marte can't throw his slider to lefties now. In order to throw it for a strike, he has to hang it. His best sliders to lefties go outside. He's also more effective vs righties because his fastball tends to bolt high and to Marte's left. Against lefties, that pitch nearly hits them. However, against righties, he gets them to chase the pitch a lot of the time.

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
This trade will likely all revert back to whether or not the Reds ownership wants to trade Griffey Jr. I'm not sure why everyone thinks they'll change their mind about 2 weeks after saying no to the trade the first time.

Cleveland's schedule down the stretch
I'm sure you'll get bashed for this, but I completely agree with your post. The Indians are swinging the bats great right now, and their bullpen isn't blowing games left and right like they did last season. If they're able to win 80 pct of their games against Tampa and KC the rest of the way, they could definitely make a substantial run at our division lead.

Official Indians Blow Thread
For everyone saying they don't mind if the Indians win so that they make the playoffs, I couldn't disagree more. The more the Indians lose now, the sooner the Sox could likely clinch. Thus, more rest for our starters, etc. I still have the uneasy feeling that the division race will get a little too close for comfort. Why can't teams f***ing finish off the Indians? They've come from behind after being down 5 three times in the last week, I believe.

Nightengale's Griffey/ Sox update
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:08 PM) The Sox have shown a history where they directly link their payroll to their attendance revenues. Just from an amatuer observation based on this years attendance trends, we should be looking at a payroll of at least $90 million next year. If the Sox can somehow make it to, or win, the World Series, we should be around $100 million. That would be quite the increase in payroll. As much as I would love it, I highly doubt it would get that high. I'd be surprised if we were at 80 million next season.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Aug 12, 2005 -> 05:18 PM) It gives us a chance to get somemore guys post season eliglible if we need them. It probably won't be necesary, but it could be useful once we know what our particular match up will be. I understand your point, but I just can't see Ozzie straying from our typical 25 man roster this season if we make the playoffs. He's a very loyal manager, and I don't believe he'd not include someone like Timo or Ozuna or Vizcaino on the postseason roster.
