https://www.milb.com/scores/whitesox/2019-08-19 https://www.milb.com/scores/whitesox/2019-08-19 Kubat for AAA. Flores back at AA for third post rehab start. I hate to ask this, I know it is a free board etc, etc. I don't post often in the MLB game threads as many are extremely negative. I get the frustration but I come to the minors for hope. On any given day, someone by virtue of chance will have a decent/good day. Lately, I am seeing the negative spill over to the minors. Could we limit the plain "he sux" comments or put them in a thread about that player? I have no problem with someone wanting to discuss a players poor performance but many of these players most of us have never seen. Many are playing for their careers as roster decisions loom. They are doing all they can in often shitty circumstances. Sorry and I know I will get slammed but everybody have a great day.

Free Yermin! We have a spot open on the 40 man. Why not?!??

Agree on Varnell. Think Lindgren will make some noise also, just needs to be healthy. I think they see something as well. He pitches every third or fourth day, trying to be careful with him?

Does Leury Garcia deserve a ‘20 starting spot?
BamaDoc replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
See Gennett has 15 outfield appearances all in 2017. I expect us to look at something like that as a cheap placeholder for a year or two. He is making 9.7 million this year and obviously will have to take a paycutt. Worth watching how he finishes for SF. I could see us take a flier on Chisenhall or bring in a vet LH RF. I am not crazy about the name free agents for RF. Thinking more Dickerson(can play RF?), Calhoun(will Angels keep at 14 mill), Gardner,Bruce. I expect short term and not high dollar. -

I am not sure how Gennett fits? I wonder if Dickerson has the arm for RF but find him much more interesting. With regard for the question, Leury has a starting role on the team if supersub/utility is a starting position. He should be a defensive sub on days he is not playing and we have a lead in LF. He should start about four times a week. His value is in roster construction. He can play all three outfield and middle infield spots. Third in emergency. If you use him to rest people, he should play that much especially when you combine some of the rest people into the DH spot. I worry about his bat if he only gets in once or twice a week but maybe he has overcome that. If you have a multi headed monster at C,1B, DH involving McCann, Abreu, Collins and others you need the multi positional player to make up for that. -

In Birmingham it was Robert, Madrigal. At AAA it has been Madrigal then Robert. Interesting if they are trying different things, saw something, or are clueless.

https://www.mlb.com/whitesox/prospects/stats/affiliates?date=08/13/2019 https://www.milb.com/scores/whitesox/2019-08-13 Sam Long for Kan. Didn't pitch in 2018. Looks like we are trying him as a starter. 24 left-handed. Anyone got info?

Osik's line doesn't scream move me up. Wonder if they just needed someone at the position or as a 22yo wanted to get him moving.

I think Madrigal's spot in the batting lineup is totally dependent on if he hits enough. Let me explain, he is not a guy who is dead pull in fact he hits to right a good bit. He doesn't strike out and he has decent speed. This profile screams two hole hitter to me. If the leadoff man gets on, he should be ok taking a couple pitches if you want the leadoff man to steal. Post stolen base or if leadoff has doubled, his natural profile has him hitting behind the runner and at least getting him to third with one out. His bat to ball skills also make hitting and running a fine option. He just has to hit enough that if the leadoff man is out, he is not a low average hitter who you just pound with fastballs ala a bunch of hitters we have run thru the last several years. If he doesn't hit enough, he is your nine hitter with decent speed, the "second leadoff man". Obviously, there is a point where if anyone doesn't hit enough they are out of baseball.

"I'll take no for a 100 Alex." Don't think he brings anything over what we have and further blocks Yermin! I do expect Collins and Zavala up when rosters expand and/or minor league season ends.

Gio, CoveyAAA, Banks AA, and the A+ debut of Varnell. I was looking and high A has a bunch of lefties. Some 2018 college guys who are a bit old for league but first full year like Varnell and Sousa. Pilkington 21 will likely repeat but A Perez looking decent at 21 and the guy I asked about Lindgren. I wouldn't be surprised if Lindgren stays healthy to see him make it to MLB next year.

Remember when Eloy didn't come up because he needed defensive improvement? What would you say is his biggest weakness?
-
Interesting. If accurate 6'2 185 lbs and 18yo. Wonder if next year you bring to AZL and/or see if he can start?

There was a Q&A with James Fegan of the Athletic. I asked about Lindgren and here was his response: "I'd really have to ask about Lindgren's rule 5 status, because I don't know. I spoke to him this past week. He's basically only just now getting healthy and was sitting 90-91 but could get swings and misses with his slider, so yeah there's some hope of a lefty specialist." Athletic is a good read.

In a completely different vein, growing up you marketed your stud pitchers. I remember Gibson, Carlton, Seaver, Ryan. The teams of my youth had Wood, Black Jack, Hoyt, Dotsun, Bannister, Burns, our five lefties, Buehrle, Garcia, Contreras. How does a team or MLB market 5 inning pitchers today? How do kids identify with the seven pitcher games of today? Personalities are marketable. With all the pitchers today, I think we will see something like running backs in the NFL where very few are studs or have longevity.

Balta, I agree. Sabathia 2012-16 was 23 million per WAR. From 8-13 he was 9 million per WAR(18 per your double). Most big contracts have not been great for the teams. Zito, Hampton, Sabathia , Cain, Santana, Felix Hernandez, Kevin Brown, Price, Hammels probably not worth it. How will Lester,Arrietta, Sale, etc finish up or look in hind site? Scherzer great, Verlander still a horse, Lester got the Cubs established but next couple years may change it. Many of these were big market clubs who spent and many before salary cap mattered. Cubs,Yanks, Red Sox were all reluctant to add because even they reached cap limits they didn't want to cross. We probably need to model more on a Brewers, Rays, A's idea with the ability to go beyond that. Bauer going year to year may one day make sense for us.

Thought I saw a discussion on another prospect(Micker?) that had a lot of injury issues that we got a extra year. Hoping here with two lost years he might qualify as he might be interesting.
