Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's 70 percent top tax rate makes sense - Vox https://www.vox.com/policy-and-politics/2019/.../alexandria-ocasio-cortez-70-percent Income tax rates were 90 percent under Eisenhower, Sanders says ... https://www.politifact.com/.../income-tax-rates-were-90-percent-under-eisenhower-/ Yes they are talking marginal rates like over ten million. Again, not trying to be political and not saying good or bad, but as an agent if I could construct a contract to protect my client from something like this I should look into it shouldn't I? It might take a couple years but this is what some want. I would try to protect my client from as many scenarios as I could.

I wonder if you can have a yearly player option on having a portion of your salary deferred? In the above situation a stipulation of 30 or 10 with 20 deferred payable at 7 per for three years after contract ends. Would give the player some tax options. Shouldn't matter in first couple years so maybe a player would want a really front loaded contract? Think about it a player/agent probably would prefer front loaded.

If they were correct and were the only game in town, what should they have done? Continue to bid against themselves?

Machado signs with Padres 10/300
At 463 pages its time to introduce a new concept into the discussion. The new tax proposals being floated by a variety of announced candidates propose all kind of new rates on the rich which big time ballplayers will certainly fall into that category. This is not meant to be political but could be why we may see some new types of structures to these mega deals which would take a lot longer to work out. Structuring your contract for tax diversification. Example: May avoid some of the new proposed taxes on super rich which since some talk of 70-90% tax on over 10 million actually makes sense. (not trying to be political but for some of these guys it would make a lot of sense). If Manny gets AAV of 30 to make math easier, 70% tax on over 10 million, 30-10= 20x70%=14 million in tax on just that 20! It would make sense to pay the 20 out over time+/- interest. Maybe 7 million a year x3 years for each year you defer the 20. So 8 yr 240 million would actually be 10 million for 8 years then 7 million for 24 years. If you revert to previous top income tax rates of about 40%, he would save 6 million per year in taxes. If after the 8 years, you move to a state with no state income tax, the savings would be even greater. Also as we all have a great feeling about all politicians, once that on over 10 million tax is in place, you can expect politicians to move it lower and lower cause thats what they do!

FS Rankings Week: Prospects 16-30
Interesting but with some of the minor league invites surprised he doesn't get a chance. Wondered also if it might be because a trade might be in the works and they don't expect him with the team?

Speaking of Adams, does he have a spring training invite? May indicate thoughts on him.

Rays to Sign Avi
I had hoped we would sign him to an incentive laden deal. This was a bit lower than I expected. Funny guys rarely take that kind of deal from there team as it is often perceived as "disrespectful". Then they end up taking less somewhere else.

Who's Got Options?
Agree on Rondon. If we don't sign Machado and have another semi tank year why not let him try 3b. A little concerned it was his first year with power. Either developed or something else

FS: Guest Post by Micker Adolfo - Ups and Downs, and what is next
In retrospect, I wonder if just letting him dh all year and rest in the winter could have avoided surgery or it was inevitable it was going to tear.

Senzel/Suarez
Rodon's potential would be the allure for Cincy as they can't pay top dollar or get FA pitchers in there. Rodon has three years of control vs at least six years in the return so I thought something might have to go back their way. Just spit ballin'. If Anderson/Moncada develop the reverse situation may present itself in Madrigal (please everyone don't hijack into a Madrigal discussion) one day.

Senzel/Suarez
I was thinking about this is regard to no Machado/Harper thread. That thread has gotten so long I wanted to split this out to get opinions. Nick Senzel is the Reds top prospect, 60 FV, #6 overall in baseball per MLB. That is just behind Eloy and ahead of Kopech for reference. He is a third baseman which we certainly could use. He is blocked at the MLB level to the point that they are talking of trying to get his bat in at 2b or even CF. Suarez is ahead of him at third. A 4 plus WAR player, signed to a six year extension at 60 million. The Reds seem to be interested in going for it rather than rebuilding so while I would be happy to get Suarez, they probably keep him. They seem to be looking for more pitching and CF. While I don't see a MLB ready Sox CF player could Carlos Rodon and a mid prospect get something done? If they wanted prospects would you substitute Cease for Rodon? Just wanted to toss this out but it seems like they could move one of their controlled third basemen rather than play Senzel out of position. They would still have India in the pipeline for down the road.(I consider India to far from MLB to target at present). So something along Rodon + Basabe or Walker for Senzel or Suarez(May have to add more if Suarez with 6 yrs control )

Fifth Starter
I was thinking along those lines. He seems pretty good first time thru the lineup. What if you pitched him two innings, twice a week. The fifth starter slot and then 2-3 days later. Ideally, with off days, every third day to have on a schedule. Roughly 60 appearances 120 innings. That would have value. If second pitcher doing good you might get thru the game or to your late guys.

FS: Focus on Luis Curbelo, healthy and ready for 2019
Seems like a likable guy. This will be a big year for a lot of players in the organization. With the improved depth, it will be produce or be bypassed. 40 man slots will be much tighter next year. It might be nice for a monthly minor league review of not just the prime players but the fringe players who are playing their way on or off teams.

Sox trade for Yonder Alonso; Alex Call to CLE
If you don't get Machado, Alanso could still have value. You probably platoon him as last year he struggled vs LHP and it may avoid his option triggering. However, his ops was around .780 vs rhp in 2018 and about .900 in 2017. If he is over .800, and not likely to trigger his option, you could probably flip him for something useful at the deadline.

FS: White Sox Rule 5 Draft Preview - AND Rule 5 Discussion Thread (draft complete - see pinned thread for review)
Wondering if it is because he is assigned or his rights are assigned to their AA team. I remember him in game threads. Looked like something clicked for him this year in DSL though a bit older at 20 than some of competition.
