  1. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 25, 2010 -> 01:10 PM) If you insist, let me ask you this, has it paid off or not? Which has turned out to be the more reasonable mindset to have thus far this season? You've been right on, confident that the team would win regardless of matchups and sticking with them when they were 9.5 back because you had tremendous faith in the roster. That's great and I don't really mean it as an insult, that's just the way it feels to me. s***, you've been saying it all year and that's commendable I just look up and down the roster and I don't feel the same way you do. Kenny really let me down in the offseason seemingly giving in to Ozzie's desire to have bad, "versatile" players fill the most offensive oriented spot in the lineup and it's left me a little jaded.
  2. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 25, 2010 -> 12:58 PM) Enough with the "faith" bs, Kal. There is a difference between having faith and having confidence and patience. Don't confuse them. I believe Kenny has learned his lesson and he'll add a bat if a reasonable solution presents itself. I'm going to stick with faith.
  3. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jun 25, 2010 -> 12:55 PM) Do all these numbers being bandied about take Jenks into consideration for 2011 or not? No
  4. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 25, 2010 -> 11:56 AM) Really? I understand that. And I am not a person that says you can only point out flaws when the problem is actually costing you. But some of you guys need to enjoy it a bit! When the only comments some make are negative, I just think they are sadistic bastards who enjoy pain... The position will be addressed in the best way possible. I think we all know that, given the body of work Kenny has put together over the course of the last decade. In the meantime, let's keep scratching out wins any way we can. Given that we actually went into the season with he and Andruw Jones as the starting DH at Ozzie's request and now Ozzie is saying the same things he did in the offseason about us not needing another bat I'm not all that confident we'll see an upgrade. But you seem to have the faith going so I'm sure you'll disagree.
  5. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 06:01 PM) He was actually pretty damn good until that 8 or 9 run debacle against the D-backs in June. I remember that game so well because I was supposed to go but couldn't because of car problems. I was at that game. What a colossal waste of time and energy that was.
  6. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 05:50 PM) I'm assuming yes since he's getting paid $1 million this year. He has a $200K buyout for next season, that accounts for the 0.2. He makes $800K this year, that $200K buyout in 2011 makes it $1M guaranteed overall.
  7. QUOTE (qwerty @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 05:19 PM) How many opportunities said player(s) had to drive in a run, whether it be a runner in scoring position, or on first... compared to league average. That's pretty much it. Sure on occasion players can hit great with men on and poorly with none on... but as a general whole the numbers even out pretty well. If you are a .220 hitter... but are one of the league leaders in rbi opportunities... you better believe that player has a great chance of being among a league leader in rbi's. It works both ways. You can hit .350, but if you don't have the opportunities, what does it matter? That's exactly what I was getting at, well said.
  8. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 05:09 PM) The problem I have with RBI is some people try to use it when comparing player A to player B. OMG it pisses me off. My question would be: what does a player's RBI total tell you at the end of the year?
  9. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 05:04 PM) And you assume that Jenks doesn't get offered arbitration, then you wind up with my $12 million figure if the total salary hangs around $95 million. Yep, right there.
  10. Peavy 16 Buehrle 14 Rios 12 Linebrink 5.5 Pierre 5 Floyd 5 Teahen 4.75 Thornton 3 Viciedo 1.25 Ramirez 1.1 Castro 0.2 Danks ???? (3.45) Jenks ???? (7.5) Pena ???? (1.2) Quentin ???? (3.2) Total 67.8 ---then guessing at salaries--- Peavy 16 Buehrle 14 Rios 12 Linebrink 5.5 Pierre 5 Floyd 5 Teahen 4.75 Thornton 3 Viciedo 1.25 Ramirez 1.1 Castro 0.2 Danks 7 Jenks 8.3 Pena 2 Quentin 5.5 Total 90.6 It's so tough to guess sarlay arbitration numbers in June
  11. QUOTE (T R U @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 03:55 PM) No, Threets I do not get why he is not up here Or even Torres. We already have our #6 starter in Hudson so the best role for Carlos would be as the big league long man, something we don't really have right now but could afford to carry given how great 5 of our other bullpen arms have been. Couldn't care less that he doesn't throw left handed.
  12. QUOTE (chw42 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 03:53 PM) Pena's also been pretty solid. Pena's come up huge for this team time and time again, he's been outstanding in his role. When your ERA is 4.46 as a reliever but you have a WPA of 0.49 you're obviously doing something right.
  13. That JJ Putz signing is looking f***ing awesome right about now. He's got a 0.79 WHIP and a 11.1 K/9, great life on his fastball and that devastating splitty, what a pickup. The back end of the bullpen has been nails for us. If you hope to win the division that's a necessity.
  14. QUOTE (T R U @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 03:31 PM) Nah, they need to be able to get TRUE saves.. the ones that aren't really saves, to REALLY be considered a closer Now I know for a fact that you don't follow non-White Sox baseball closely. You don't even know how the f***ing game works.
  15. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 03:30 PM) I thought a closer gets saves, to you know, CLOSE games? Gotta love that this place still needs to find something to b**** about with Jenks. I'm not b****ing god dammit. Did you ever wonder why all the elite closers in the game have about 6 or 7 outings to this point that took place in tied games? Well that's because IT'S PART OF THE f***ING JOB. Kind of like what Mo did last night in Arizona. If a closer was asked it only pitch in save situations then there'd really be no reason to pay them $7M+ a year. When someone says "Jenks shouldn't pitch in tie ballgames" I'm gonna f***ing say something because that's jut ridiculous. How about you come up with a thought that has nothing to do with other people's opinions on Bobby Jenks?
  16. QUOTE (T R U @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 03:26 PM) Ide rather we just save one of Putz and Thornton for those situations.. Then Jenks isn't a real closer.
  17. QUOTE (WCSox @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 01:50 PM) One other thing to consider with regard to Linebrink is that he and Peavy are close. Not that that should matter, but keeping one's superstar players happy is a reality of professional sports. And when there are no realistic options to unload his salary and with Thornton, Putz, Jenks, and Santos all throwing the ball well, that's one more (minor) reason to not DFA Linebrink. Unless the bullpen implodes between now and September 1, Linebrink taking up a roster spot shouldn't be that big of a deal. He's forced us to use Jenks in 2 blowouts within almost a week of each other, I'd say that's hurting the team.
  18. QUOTE (T R U @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 03:07 PM) Of course they do, but the thing is Jenks isn't always a crappy pitcher like he was earlier.. if he was always crappy, the save % would not be there It just manifested itself in tied ballgames which are arguably more important than save situations. See how you just end up arguing the same s*** over and over?
  19. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 10:45 AM) Yeah, have to have options left to be sent a player down without his permission. And once you reach 5.000 years of service you can't be sent down without your permission, regardless of any options you may have remaining.
  20. The 2 circles were used in the olden days by photographers, they serve no real purpose now other than as an aesthetic throw back to a by-gone era.
  21. Mariano just pitched a scoreless inning in the bottom of the 9th of a tied game in Arizona. Just before going to break Mark Grace says: "that right there folks, is a closer". Oh and then Curtis Granderson un-tied the game in the top of the 10th because the D-Backs are a total f***ign mess.
  22. QUOTE (iamshack @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 12:17 AM) Q is 11 for his last 25... The trouble is; he had a 9 for 19 / 12 for 31 stretch in the middle of May. He's gotta keep this up for another week or 2 before I believe he's back, he's fooled me before and I don't want to get my heart broken again.
  23. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 24, 2010 -> 12:01 AM) I think he has proven he's not real good in tie games or with a huge huge lead. If Oz was smart he'd skip the tie game thing with Bobby unless he has no choice. Problem is, that's something your closer needs to be able to do. They're ALL asked to get those big time outs in the top of the 9th of a tie game and the very best get the job done that's one of the reasons why they make $7M+ a year and a setup man gets no where near that. That being said, if I'm Ozzie I'm still going to put him out there in a tie ballgame. He's a different pitcher right now than he was in April and May hopefully that would mean better results in tied games.
  24. QUOTE (greg775 @ Jun 23, 2010 -> 11:37 PM) What baffles me is you guys who want a new closer, act like the new closer will stand the test of time rather than one or two outings. Jenks has been doing a fine job in the role this season and several past seasons. You folks act like Putz will just blow through inning after inning, night after night. He won't. All closers all baserunners on occasion; all closers give up runs on occasion (except for Texas'). All closers BLOW SAVES on occasions. Put Putz out there for a full month and I guarantee you he'll blow as many or more saves than Jenks. That you can't realize that confounds me. It's a joke, we're busting your balls. No one wants Jenks replaced.
