No long-term extension talks for Bobby Jenks
Kalapse replied to caulfield12's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Dec 18, 2008 -> 01:13 PM) Exactly. He may love the Sox, but it's more like 3 years for $5 or more million a year Jenks will make more than $22M over the next 3 years if he just stays healthy and doesn't sign a long term contract. -

QUOTE (qwerty @ Dec 18, 2008 -> 12:45 AM) 3/9? Might as well see if he will pitch for free at that rate. Well if you offer Bobby 3/$9M and he accepts then you have your answer as to the health of his arm, he doesn't expect to pitch beyond 2009. -
No long-term extension talks for Bobby Jenks

Jenks is under team control for 3 more seasons, he's no where near free agency. This isn't a good time to start talking extension, guaranteeing him 3 years worth of salary just to get a bit of a discount during his arbitration years and maybe buy out a year of free agency with an option. Given the fickle nature of the closer position and Bobby's specific shortcomings and possible red flags it's probably not worth the gamble. 2009 will be the deciding year of Bobby's financial future, if he performs and stays healthy he'll be a very wealthy man going into 2010. If he were to receive a contract extension right now it'd be worth no less than $20M guaranteed, probably 3 years, $24/$25M guaranteed. ($5M, $8M, $10M, buyout). -
I can only imagine what would happen if you removed Michael Young, a hitter who's whole game is predicated on hitting singles through the infield, from that joke of an infield they play on in Arlington. I suppose if you played half your games on incredibly hard turf (MIN) or asphalt (inner-city stick ball team) it could work.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 17, 2008 -> 02:36 PM) I'd have absolutely zero problem if the Sox acquired Juan Pierre and got cash from the Dodgers. It shoudln't cost anything and at least the club would have a leadoff hitter who can hit for a solid average and get on base at a reasonably acceptable rate (albeit, not a great rate). In fact if the Sox had Pierre/Abrue in the top 2 spots of the order I'd be perfectly content (this is obviously assuming a Dye trade). There's nothing "acceptable" about a .325-.330 OBP (in the NL, likely even lower in the AL) in the leadoff spot especially when he's an incredible liability in the field, one of the top 3 weakest hitters in the game, sports a well below average Pit/PA and is a bulk base stealer (his SB% has always been mediocre). Not to mention the fact that there's still 3 years and $28.5M remaining on his deal and you're not going to convince the Dodgers to pick up 70% of that contract which is about what it would take to make such a deal anything but an albatross. I can't fathom any circumstance in which a trade for Juan Pierre helps the White Sox. We already got to see him play 162 games in Chicago in 2006, I have absolutely no desire to relive that experience on the opposite side of town. Juan Pierre possesses 2 tools: an incredibly high contact rate and excellent speed. He sucks at every other facet of the game.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 17, 2008 -> 07:56 PM) By not signing with the Dodgers...we're likely to get a second round or sandwich pick, because all the teams interested are between 1-15 in first round, and they can't give up such high draft picks for signing Type A's. and

QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Dec 14, 2008 -> 03:58 AM) People always assume that we need a righty to give AJ days off but his splits vs. righty/lefty are pretty much the same. We don't really need someone to face tough lefty's when AJ sits. The past 2 seasons? Sure. The first 9 years of his pro career? They tell a different tale, a tale of suck against left handed pitching, lots of suck in fact, like .248/.274/.350/.623 worth of suck. Now that's a lot of suck.

QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 11:44 PM) Those memories were also from last season when he stole 5 bases in a single game against us. Willy Taveras = Sox killer. Yep, stole 5 bases and failed to score even 1 time. He actually had 1/18 of his total extra base hits for the season against us in 1 AB in that very game.

Hanging with Mr. Cooper... Daniel Cabrera non-tendered

QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 10:56 PM) He should be ready to start throwing in Feb. He should pitch most of the season for someone. Sure he'll pitch but how well would you expect him to perform coming off a second TJS? -

Chris Capuano had the 2nd ligament replacement (Tommy John) surgery of his career in mid May, I doubt he'll be a factor for anyone this season. Chuck James had rotator cuff and labrum surgery in September so he'll be worthless until August at the earliest. He's also a big time flyball pitcher so he'd be a bad fit even if healthy. -
Well, Willy was not tendered a contract and is now a free agent along with Chris Capuano, Chuck James, Chris Burke, Kevin Cash, Justin Christian, Chris Britton, Clay Henley, Charlie Haeger, Jonny Gomes, Scott Proctor, Yhency Brazoban, Takashi Saito, Angel Berroa, Mario Alverez and Tim Redding. That's it so far, I'm sure there will be a few more announced in the coming hours.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 02:16 PM) The Bears still had the timeout at that point, and I'm pretty sure that if you have a timeout in a spot like that, you can use it in order to avoid a 10 second runoff even if a foul with such a runoff occurs, for whatever it's worth. That's exactly what I posted. -
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 04:41 PM) I think that is a WISE move to sign Dewayne WISE. He has speed and showed some clutch hitting and also is a decent OF'er. Very much worth the money He's a terrible outfielder.

Is there a list of potential non-tender candidates out there?
Kalapse replied to Chisoxfn's topic in Pale Hose Talk
If the player is under contract and is released by the team then the team is on the hook for the whole contract. For example: Mike MacDougal is under contract by the White Sox for $2.65M this season and is due a $350K buyout if his 2010 option is not exercised. If the White Sox released MacDougal today they'd have to pay him $3M. Non-tendering only refers to players who are not under contract, whether they be arbitration eligible or still pre-arb (and usually out of options), the team may decide their 40 man roster spot or the money it would take to retain said player is more valuable than the player himself so when the deadline for tendering contracts approaches the team can simply elect to not re-sign the player and will owe him no money (since he's not under contract). Tonight at 11pm is the deadline to tender contracts. If the Sox feel DJ Carrasco is not worth the couple hundred thousand it will cost to retain him or the two sides can not come to an agreement on a 1 year deal and the Sox don't feel it's worth going to arbitration with him the Sox can choose to simply not tender him a contract or non-tender him. Carrasco would become a free agent, the Sox wouldn't owe him a dime and they'd free up a spot on the 40 man roster. -
Looks like you're right. As of last night it was Taveras' leg that killed the deal now it looks like it was Morillo's health.
-
He also suffered a stress fracture in his leg in the final week of the season. He was traded to the Nationals for Tim Redding just a few days ago but failed his physical.

QUOTE (Brian @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 02:01 PM) I'm willing to bet that Orton knew we had a time out left. If he steps up and throws it out of the end zone, that takes longer than going down and calling a time out. Except he didn't take a knee or just go down, he made a run for it and fought to stay up while being tackled. Hell since the Bears had a timeout left he could have just spiked the ball, they would have called intentional grounding but there would be no 10 second runoff since the Bears still held a timeout. -

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 12, 2008 -> 08:11 AM) Throwing the ball away while in the pocket would be a penalty and they'd run 10 seconds off the clock, right? What's been Maynard's problem lately? It seems like he has several s***ty punts a game now. If he throws it through the back of the endzone it's not intentional grounding. I'm convinced that Kyle Orton has no clock in his head which is real scary. -

The funny thing is, Kyle Orton tried to give the game away at the end of regulation and it won't be mentioned by anyone this week. They were what? 10 yards out 7 seconds to go, Orton drops back to pass, no one's open, 4 seconds now, he takes off running, Kyle Orton couldn't run 10 yards in 4 seconds with a clear lane to the endzone and yet he's going for it anyway. THROW THE f***ING BALL AWAY! If the Saints hold him up for an extra 2 seconds time expires and the Bears lose. Luckily they dragged him to the ground with a little time left on the clock. For a game manager Kyle Orton is a really f***ing stupid QB. He's f***ing regressing. -

QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 09:51 PM) I find it hard to believe that any team, especially one hoping to contend for the playoffs would have Nick Punto as a starter, I have no problems with him as a utility guy, but he is a pretty poor starter. $8.5M over 2 years is a s*** load of money to be paying a utility guy. -
He and Jenks are the only arbitration eligible players on the roster guaranteed to be tendered a contract, Wise and Carrasco are also eligible but are likely candidates to be cut loose tomorrow night. I imagine Jenks will get something like $5.2M.

It's a form of the Italian word "aprire" which means "to open" or "to turn". I'd say anyone who uses "apriate" in place of "appreciate" either thinks their funny or is very confused.
