Rumor: Yankees to trade M. Cabrera to Brew Crew for Cameron
Kalapse replied to LittleHurt05's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 05:11 PM) It's amazing how many steroid guys the Yankees have had through the years, add another one to the list. Cameron tested positive for a banned stimulate (which he claimed came from a tainted supplement) not roids. -
QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 01:52 PM) Bruce Wayne voice definitely. Batman, not so much. No, it was the Batman voice and I'm hardly the only one to notice it. When he's in that guys face he's using his scary Batman voice, it's clear as day.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 11, 2008 -> 08:30 AM) Hell I would have sent them Josh Fields who would put up better numbers in LF than Joyce will. Except they're looking for someone who can play RF against right handed pitching next year. Fields is not an outfielder, they would have to convert him unlike Joyce who can play a good RF right now. In his limited time in LF 2 years ago Fields looked awful so there's really no reason to believe he could play even a bad RF next year. Also, Fields can't hit righties, he's mashed lefties but struggles against righties, so I doubt they'd have any interest even if he could play some OF. Sounds like an awful fit to me. Also, I wouldn't trade Fields for Jackson.

It really has to be a 2 year deal. I don't see him being a good enough hitter 2 years from now to justify DH'ing him and even though his defense is on a steady decline and he's no longer fast you can probably tolerate Abreu making an ass of himself for 2 seasons in LF if he's still drawing walks and providing excellent situational hitting and baserunning (not speed but baserunning, dude is big and slow.)

Question for Boers and Bernstein listeners...
Kalapse replied to Kid Gleason's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 11:48 PM) The other thing you have to remember about B&B, and their style, is the callers are all part of the act. The screeners at the station look for dumb calls like that, because it makes for good radio. They obviously throw in the smart call every now and again, but when an idiot calls the station, and tells the screener "Hi, I'm Dale from Niles and I think Lovie isn't firey enough because he never yells on the sideline", the producers know Bernstein is going to tear him apart, so they put it through, because it makes people laugh(myself included). Yep, it's all just entertainment. If they were discussing a more serious subject matter I could understand why people would be annoyed by their style but after all it's just sports radio. -
Question for Boers and Bernstein listeners...

QUOTE (Kid Gleason @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 11:31 PM) I like Goff when he calls out Boers and Bernstein for the jerks or idiots that might come across as. But usually he ends up sounding worse than either of them at some point. As for B&B drop by guys, I wish Holmes was at a better time. He is by far one of the best talents in Chicago. His voice is great and his knowledge is great. Plus he knows how to handle callers and guests perfectly. He never comes across as arrogant, but always lets the people know when he seriously finds them at fault and himself correct. Thank you for the answer to who Woo Woo is. I wasn't sure if she was just a worker there or if it was just another code name for a known personality (Johnny Cakes). I still am not too sure if she is a real person though, or just a figment of Terry's imagination. Eh, most people that call into sports radio shows (especially B&B) are complete morons and it's more entertaining when they're made fun of and chastised than when they're coddled like with Mike Murphy and his callers, I find his condescending approach to be much more offensive, at least Bernstein will let you know when he thinks you're an idiot rather than playfully laughing you off the air then muttering something under his breath after you hang up (Murph). When you call into a sports radio station b****ing that the Lovie doesn't show enough emotion or doesn't yell into his headset enough you deserve to be called an idiot. On a side note: I thought Matt Abatacola's post game shows after each Cubs playoff loss this past season were very, very good. He really endeared himself to me with his thoughtful, well reasoned insight, he was excellent. -
Question for Boers and Bernstein listeners...

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 11:13 PM) I don't want to come off as a baseball snob, but I know you especially agree with me that 99% of sports radio in terms of baseball is below the level at which we discuss it. It's still fun to listen to, but I'm certainly not gaining any new info(aside from rumors and such). When the guys are getting on a roll about some random, off colored topic, I love when Goff drops in. However, if he was on too much, I may start to dislike him. Yeah we've talked about this in the past and it's true, it's not snobbery, it's just the truth. We put a LOT more time into researching breaking down the game than they do because they're doing it for a living while we're doing it for fun. Plus we just care more, once you spend that much time around professional athletes and cover the teams you're not going to have that same desire for the club. Goff has actually said in the past that he doesn't spend a ton of time researching the game, he has a life and he's not going to spend all of his free time acquainting himself with every White Sox prospect or know every little thing about every player on their 40 man roster. I found it humorous yesterday when B&B took a look at the Sox's top 10 prospects according to Baseball America, they didn't know who have the players were and I really don't expect them to. Boers was shocked to find out that John "T-Bone" Shelby's son played for a White Sox affiliate, now how many of us can give a pretty accurate scouting report on Shelby. Like 3 years ago Dan McNeil spent the first hour or so of his show discussing the pending free agency of Joe Crede, obviously he was mistaken, Crede was not a free agent and he knew absolutely nothing about arbitration years. It's because he doesn't have the same desire for knowledge and information as we do, they're just trying to entertain, not necessarily inform. DISCLAIMER: I don't know if any of the prior 2 paragraphs actually make any sense, I'm doing a few things at the same time right now but I really wanted to get that out there. Sorry if it's written poorly. B&B manage to entertain me without offending my sports sensitivities so I listen to them whenever I need a little background noise. MJ&H on the other hand offend me to my core, talk about pandering. -
Question for Boers and Bernstein listeners...

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 11:03 PM) I have said it numerous times, but I love Bernstein, and can't stand Bores. I know it's Bores "Shtick" to be the bumbling old idiot, but whenever he does try and contribute anything of substance, he is just riding the coat tails of what Bernstein just said. They should jump bump Goff up to Terry's spot. The show would be much better, IMO. I agree with you but I think it works. Bernstein adds the intelligent commentary and Boers concurs, makes a fart joke, drops the name of some athlete from the 60's and calls himself an idiot. Nothing wrong with that. I rarely find myself agreeing with Goff on baseball topics. I think Abatacola is more sensible when it comes to baseball. -

QUOTE (Markbilliards @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 10:56 PM) Does anybody else hate Boers and Bernstein? I feel like they never know what they're talking about, nor does it seem like they even watch the games. It's the exact opposite IMO. This town is full of retarded sports radio, B&B are the exception. And Jackie Woo Woo is some woman who works in their building, can't remember if she works for the station or not, pretty sure she does. -
Is there a list of potential non-tender candidates out there?
Kalapse replied to Chisoxfn's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 10:18 PM) Sarcasm, let's just make sure he's healthy before bringing him in. The only reason he'd be non-tendered is if the Mariners feel his shoulder is still in such bad shape that he'll be a non-factor in 2009 (the most recent report has him healing nicely) and if that's the case then I want nothing to do with him. I guarantee they'd be willing to gamble $7M and keep him around if they think there's any shot of him returning to form this up coming season. You don't just let the guy go for nothing just because he might be a waste of $7M after giving up Adam Jones to acquire him. -
http://blogs.denverpost.com/rockies/2008/1...er-ball-tuneup/ Apparently they feel Podsednik is a better bet/value as their 4th/5th OF in 2009 given the current condition of Taveras' leg (stress fracture he suffered in the final week of the season) and $2M price-tag.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 10:02 PM) Except Joyce isn't exactly highly touted nor has he ever shown anything too special at the minor league level. Yeah, it doesn't look like the Rays got back great value for Jackson but given what their asking price appears to have been the Sox weren't a good fit.
-
QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 10:00 PM) David Cook or John Shelby? Joyce has Kevin Maas/Chris Shelton written all over him. David Cook has "suck" written all over him and John Shelby has yet to play above high A. Neither works.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 09:48 PM) If that's all it cost to get Jackson, then I'm upset we didn't go after him. Lets say the asking price was a toolsy major league ready outfielder. Who do the Sox even have to offer? Given what Joyce did as a 23 year old between AAA and the Bigs I think he has much better value than Anderson. I'm sure in the eyes of some Brian has proven that he can not hit major league pitching. I can't think of anybody.

Official 2008-2009 NHL Thread

Patrick Kane probably needs to stop hitting people in the face with his stick. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 07:35 PM) ESPN already reported that the Braves would go 5 years, and that they were talking about more money than Zambrano got. How stupid are these people? Dude, he throws like 95 miles per hour! And he pitched a no hitter 8 years ago! If you're not willing to pay a 36 year old AJ Burnett somewhere between 16 and 18 million dollars then there's something wrong with YOU!
-
QUOTE (kyyle23 @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 05:58 PM) Bad. Ass. Hey, John Conner sporting the Batman voice.
-
QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 05:44 PM) Lucy is not a prospect Because he may never catch/play again after dislocating his kneecap in May.
-
Hanley Ramirez is by far the best shortstop in the game (even though he's mediocre in the field, that's how good he is at the plate) and probably the most talented offensive player in baseball. He's not going anywhere and if for whatever reason they do decide to move him they'll get several top 50/100 prospects and great young big league talent with little service time in return, not a couple White Sox projects and mediocre low level prospects.
-
Think of it this way: if Owens, Quentin and Dye played the same number of games next year with Owens leading off, Quentin hitting 3rd and Dye hitting 5th, Jerry Owens would get about 5% more PA than Quentin and 10% more PA than Dye. Oh and 16% more PA than Alexei if he hits 7th. Sounds good right?
-
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Dec 10, 2008 -> 12:09 AM) Not THAT offense, obviously. But not a completely one-dimensional offense either. The fact that you have the ability to manufacture a run and take an early lead was a lot of the psychological advantage of that team, the confidence they had, knowing if they could just score a run or two early, the bullpen and starting pitching were just that good. With our pitching this year, as it looks, not quite as germane or important...but still, we have to evolve away from all-or-nothingness. Thanks, Hawk.
-
QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 11:06 PM) KW wants to trade JD for a starting pitcher. If the Braves are serious about trading for Grienke AND signing Burnett. That would give them Hudson, Burnett, Vazquez, Grienke and Jurgens. That leads me to believe that Hanson or Reyes could be had... Hanson is solid, but his pitching mechanics scare me. If you look at that video link you posted he uses an aweful lot of arm. Its something Coop can likely work with him on i suppose but it still worries me. 1.) The Francouer/Grienke rumor was shot down, it never really made any sense to begin with. 2.) Tim Hudson had Tommy John surgery in August, he won't be playing baseball this year.
-
QUOTE (Cali @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 09:47 PM) Yeah, he doesn't look overweight in that video at all, he just looks HUGE, and like he wants to mash some baseballs. \m/ Ozzie reiterated today that Viciedo needs to lose weight.
-
QUOTE (chisox2334 @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 09:31 PM) Ken Williams’ eyes turned red Tuesday when ahe was asked about his faith in unproven youngsters Josh Fields, Jerry Owens and Brian Anderson. What does it say about you as a player when you're a 28 year old who's still considered an unproven youngster?
-
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 9, 2008 -> 10:16 PM) Good thinking... Maybe even a John Danks extension? He's 4 years away from free agency, no reason to start guaranteeing him money now. Maybe 2 year from now.
