QUOTE (bighurt4life @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 10:34 PM) Who knows how arbitration works? Does OC have to reject it? If he does nothing does that implicitly mean that he accepts the offer of arbitration or does he have to contact the commissioner's office and tell them that he accepts arb??? He has to ACCEPT the White Sox's offer of salary arbitration sometime in the next 75 minutes. At this point in time he's likely already gone to the White Sox with his decision, it's just yet to be reported.

Phil Rogers on Sox quest to find leadoff man

QUOTE (knightni @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 09:16 PM) There's no way that Dunn should be in the same lineup as Thome. the Cell will be air-conditioned by all the whiffs that those two will have. For 1 season it's fine. The 80 HRs and all those walks between them would also totally suck though. -

Oh and as far as Abreu goes: I'd only be interested in signing him if he's willing to accept a 2 year deal, anything longer than that would be a bad contract. -

According to Cowley Jermaine Dye's agent has yet to hear anything about a trade from the Sox and KW isn't talking to the media. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 09:27 PM) My totally inaccurate and spur-of-the-moment Sox starting lineup for 2009 is: 1- Furcal SS 2- Ramirez 2B 3- Quentin LF 4- Thome DH 5- Konerko 1B 6- Abreu RF 7- Fields 3B 8- AJP C 9- Taveras CF If the Sox can afford it, I can live with it though I'd rather the Sox move Quentin back to his natural position of RF in hopes that his defense improves from last year. -

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 09:21 PM) Kenny has been trading our all or nothing OF'ers, I dont see him going after another one at this point. He'd only play the OF for 1 season then become the full time DH in 2010. It's actually a perfect fit. -

QUOTE (SoxFan1 @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 09:18 PM) For once, I agree with you completely. I actually welcome the idea of Taveras in CF and batting 9th. The problem then is finding a leadoff hitting infielder. If they have one in mind (ie: Furcal) then Taveras is a valuable commodity in the 9 hole. The key though is keeping him at the bottom of the lineup, he has no business at the top. -

QUOTE (dasox24 @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 09:13 PM) I would absolutely love it if we signed Raul Ibanez. Dude is a badass and a Sox killer, so it would be nice having him on our side. He's also 2 years older than Jermaine, an awful defender and would cost the Sox a 1st round draft pick. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 09:10 PM) T minus how many hours before Broadway is traded for WT I think it's funny that we'd be trading for, starting and batting leadoff a player who's former team believes is less valuable than Scott Podsednik. -

QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 09:07 PM) So would of Kenny, but those pesky NTC's mess up those plans. Not to mention player versatility, 2008 production and length of contract. Dye was by far the easiest to trade of the 3. -

QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 09:00 PM) On the other hand, if we use this money wisely, then I don't mind these moves. I'd like to be the first to say thank you to Jermaine Dye. One of the most significant players in Sox history. 1 of my top 3 favorite White Sox of all-time. -

This is starting to feel like a typical A's offseason only we're not getting great value for a our expensive major leaguers. -
QUOTE (103 mph screwball @ Dec 7, 2008 -> 12:56 AM) Yet still Cantu is an improvement over Fields in my mind. Fields will not be stellar defensively either. Cantu would be much more consistent and strike out less. I hope Viciedo can pull an Alexei and start at 3rd. If you can get Cantu for Armstrong, I think you gotta do it. Unless of course he reverts back to his 2006 performance level when he was one of the least valuable players in the game and spent some time in the minors. Hell, the Reds released him in December of '07 after acquiring him midseason (for a package of crap) because they didn't think he was worth the $1M+ it would have taken to retain him in arbitration. Personally, I don't think much of Jorge Cantu. He's one of the absolute worst defenders I've ever seen in my life at any position, he really does make Josh Fields look good. He's a toy baseball player because aside from his decent gap power he possess no other tools. If I'm the Marlins and I can get a young left handed catcher with decent power potential who's never played a game above AAA for Jorge Cantu, I jump at it.

QUOTE (Gregory Pratt @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 01:13 AM) Over, I think, seven years, he averaged a sub-1 WHIP, if I recall correctly. (I know it was over five years, and I think it was up to 7.) 8/24/91 - 9/27/98: 236 GS, 1749.1 IP, 132-57 (.698 WIN%), 2.18 ERA, 0.98 WHIP, 0.35 HR/9, 4.67 K/BB, 60 CG, 20 SHO Not bad.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 01:57 PM) Please explain his .542 road OPS in 2008. As long as you're ripping Cabrera for being "underwhelming" in 2008, I'm sure you'll have a reason for the absolutely pathetic numbers Greene put up away from Petco. Juan Uribe has gotten on base at a better clip than Mr. Greene the past 2 seasons. He sucked last year. I never said I wanted him on my team but I can see why someone would gamble on a 29 year old who plays great defense and will probably hit a ton of homeruns/doubles, assuming last season was just a down year. He's not going to walk, I think that's pretty obvious (though over the course of his career he's proven he can do it better than Uribe) but at least he's done 2 other things incredibly well since coming into the league. SS more than any other position you tend to look past certain deficiencies in a player's game if he's going to play great D. Assuming 2008 was an anomaly and just a down year he's probably going to be a pretty good player for the Cardinalsin 2009, assuming he stays healthy. And Cabrera's underwhelming 2008 was right in line with his career norms while Greene's 2008 was well below his.

QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 01:13 PM) Bobby Crosby and Khalil Greene are underwhelming major league shortstops. Orlando Cabrera is not. No Bobby Crosby is a disappointment who could never stay healthy or prove that he can hit major league pitching and Khalil Greene is a defensive whiz with incredible power potential/production (when he's away from Petco). I think "underwhelming" suits Cabrera perfectly, you watch him play enough and soon you realize that he really does nothing all that well (aside from durability) and yet there are people here who would love to have him back at $11M which I just find absurd.
-
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Dec 6, 2008 -> 01:07 PM) I would have to argue with Kalapse and say that OC is not an "underwhelming" SS. He is a great defensive player and can hit. However, I don't think he is a good fit personalitywise on the Sox. If we bring him back where does all the moving around of Ramirez to SS and a new 2Bman? We will see 3/4th on our infield basically changing with OC gone and if he stays the only position different will be 3B. I would rather see the draft picks come our way. He's a good defensive SS, calling him great is a slap to the face of the real great shortstops like Omar Vizquel back when he could run. Orlando can hit a little but not very well and with incredible inconsistency (would it kill him to have 5 or 6 "good" months rather than 3 horrible, 2 great and 1 good?). I know he just barely outperformed some of his career averages (his SLG% was 28 points below his career norm while playing in a hitters) but that's mostly because his career averages kind of suck, he's been a pretty bad hitter for most of his career. Assuming Alexei can play some decent defense at short (which he supposedly can) I wouldn't be shocked to see Chris Getz put up equal offensive output to Orlando Cabrera. Achieving a .700 OPS isn't all that hard.
-
There is absolutely no difference between Tony Gwynn Jr. and the average light hitting speedster with questionable fielding ability that you can sign off the street, aside from his pedigree I suppose.
-
If Orlando Cabrera accepts arbitration he'll be making close to twice what he's worth in 2009, that bothers me and doesn't really help the club and their apparent budget constraints. Also, until someone says otherwise, I believe the Sox would not be allowed to trade Cabrera until June 16th, 2009 unless he gives his written consent to the trade. So Orlando Cabrera, an underwhelming major league shortstop who may not be well liked in the Sox clubhouse would be making ~$11M dollars with a full no trade clause. This is unacceptable. So in conclusion: lets pray he declines.
