  1. QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 04:55 PM) Pujols will never be greater than Gehrig until he averages 140-150 RBI a season for 8 straight seasons. Yep and just as soon as you get him in the middle of a lineup with 5 other Hall of Famers (1 of which is Babe Ruth) on a team with a .380 OBP he'll do just that.
  2. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 04:39 PM) Seems like we are trying to clear money for something. Well this move doesn't free up any money unless MacDougal refuses the assignment, which he shouldn't. It looks like they're trying to free up spots on the 40 man roster, possibly for the Dec. 8th Rule V Draft deadline.
  3. QUOTE (Reddy @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 04:33 PM) there is nothing validating this right? cuz i've heard nothing about this. st louis isn't that retarded. It's not a rumor, it was just Mark Gonzales throwing a name out there because he's not familiar with the Cardinals.
  4. QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 04:26 PM) Can't MacDougal reject the guaranteed money to become a FA? He could but he's not going to do any better on the open market than the $3M he's guaranteed from the Sox, he'd be looking at a MLC with an invite to Spring Training if he were a free agent.
  5. QUOTE (santo=dorf @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 04:28 PM) I'm about 100% sure when a player is "outrighted" he went through the waiver process and nobody claimed him. Yep. Otherwise they'd just be reporting that he was placed on waivers. "Outrighting" a player is something you can only do after they clear waivers.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 04:12 PM) If he accepts aribtration we don't get a draft pick AND we can only cut his pay by 20%. All of that for maybe 2nd round pick. And you can only hope to cut his pay by 20%. Given the fact that he qualified as a Type B player at his position and players rarely receive pay-cuts in arbitration (unless they miss an entire season due to injury; save Joe Crede) Juan would make no less than $4.5M in 2009. If the Sox offered anything from $3.6M to $4.4M in arbitration and Juan submitted a number of $4.75M, I think Juan would win. I still think a team would trade for him though, so if he did accept arb. the Sox wouldn't be stuck with his contract for long.
  7. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 03:54 PM) Heh, I guess we weren't getting anything in trade for him then. He could still elect not to take the outright, and go out as a free agent, right? My question is, if he does decline the assignment, is his contract null and void? Or does a signing team get his current contract? I believe the contract is null. He doesn't get a dime.
  8. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 14, 2008 -> 01:02 PM) Whoa. I just read a rumor that St Louis was interested in Dye and Javy and have been dangling Colby Rasmus. He would be a perfect fit for us. He's a CF'er, lead off hitter, has speed. By "dangling" do you mean "Mark Gonzales just threw his name out there because he knows nothing of the Cardinals Organization"? The Cardinals were unwilling to even talk about moving Rasmus just 4 months ago when better players were being offered up for him, they're not going to relinquish him now for 1-2 years of Dye and his 8 figure salary, Rasmus is far too valuable to that organization.
  9. QUOTE (daa84 @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 05:36 PM) its strange KW really loves to scout the AFL....i mean its a good place to see prospects playing against other high level prospects (especially for guys who have only played in A ball like beckham) but it really seems like KW puts more stock into what he sees there than most GMs....sometimes i think he puts too much stock into it...i believe nick masset was acquired heavily because of his "jenks lite" effort given at the AFL as well Actually Masset was pitching in the Mexican Winter League.
  10. QUOTE (sircaffey @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 05:32 PM) From the standpoint of this year and this year only, I like the trade. Looking back a year, Gio/Sweeney/Fautino blow Marquez/Betemit/Nunez out of the water in terms of value at the time of the trade. But I like what we got for the most part, and think it's fair value. We'll just put Swisher in the mistake pile for KW. Agreed on all counts. It's a decent way to kick off what's sure to be an interesting offseason.
  11. 12. QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 04:30 PM) I'm not sure what to think. Swisher was bad but he looked like PK's replacement at 1B. However, they still may trade PK, stick Viciedo at 3B if they get him, then put Betemit at 1B. However, what do we do in CF now? I figured we'd be getting Melky in return when I heard we dealt Nick to New York. How is Wilson's defense? I feel confident in saying that would be the weakest corner infield in the game and possibly one of the worst of all time.
  13. QUOTE (sircaffey @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 04:18 PM) Nick Swisher in the most professional clubhouse in baseball. Should be interesting. I guess the real question is; how will Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter and Joe Girardi react to the rally sodomized blow up dolls and the Dirty Cat salon? Poor Nick, it almost seems like Kenny dealt him to the Yankees out of spite.
  14. QUOTE (Jenksy Cat @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 04:17 PM) did you not happen to see giambi's stache all year? That's all they allow. Swisher is all about the dyed goatees, long sideburns and patterned beards, they don't allow that s*** in New York.
  15. Swish is gonna have a tough time in New York. That goofy facial hair ain't gonna fly with the Yankees and if he gets off to a slow start on the field but keeps up his wacky act off the field the fans and media will destroy him.
  16. Betemit has 4 years of service under his belt so he's under team control for 2 more years.
  17. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 13, 2008 -> 03:51 PM) Sox got Betemit also Kind of funny, I was really hoping the Sox would steal him away from LA at the deadline in '07. Sox also got Johnny Nunez. Sox included a class A pitcher in the deal, not named yet.
  18. Marquez spent some time on the disabled list season, can't find any specifics on the injury but the guy is a friggin' twig (6'2, 175), better not be elbow soreness.
  19. So according to Scott Miller of sportsline.com this thing is just about done, looks like the Cubs missed out. So sad. http://www.sportsline.com/mcc/blogs/entry/6270335/11665079
  20. Double Indemnity for sure. Also Amadeus (kind of) and The Killing.
  21. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 12, 2008 -> 10:38 PM) Danks and Liriano have the same fastball now, 91-93, touching 94 MPH. Liriano's slider is down from 87-90 into the low 80's. He's afraid to really let it go...that "muscle memory" of the injury seems to be affecting him mentally. Liriano mowed down the lower-tier teams (he had a lot of favorable match-ups) but he lost a couple of really big games down the stretch...I think his reputation from 2006 helped him to a large extent, but the jury's out if he will ever have that devastating slider back again (and if he uncorks it, how long his elbow will hold together). Would you trade Danks for Liriano TODAY, straight up? I wouldn't, because Danks has a nice, repeatable/easy delivery and doesn't look like nearly the injury risk that The Franchise does going forward. From to Fan Graphs: Danks in 2008: FB: 52.2% (91.3 average velocity)(89.5 in 2007) SL: 4.7% (83.9)(81.0) CT: 16.4% (87.1) CB: 6.4% (77.0)(76.9) CH: 20.3% (82.8)(81.7) K/9: 7.34 Liriano in 2008: FB: 53.6% (90.9)(94.7 in 2006) SL: 26.4% (83.7)(87.7) CH: 20.0% (82.0)(83.5) K/9: 7.93 This was still only his first stint back from ligament replacement surgery so we'll see what happens next year after he has a full offseason to strengthen that arm back up.
  22. Yeah Bateman has been pushing this for a while and dropping hints that it's going to happen. There was a rumor that Cera didn't want to make the movie but those rumors appeared to be unfounded. Can't wait. Hope it doesn't suck.
  23. Ok, I found one more. Toni Ginnetti in the Dec. 14th, 2005 Chicago Sun Times wrote: "Sox rumored to be interested in Arizona Diamondbacks right-hander Javier Vazquez", you have to pay for the full article so this will have to do. Javy was traded a few days later.
  24. QUOTE (striker62704 @ Nov 11, 2008 -> 11:35 PM) My theory about the Jenks rumor, it's smoke and mirrors by both KW and Minaya. Minaya is trying to bring down the price the free agents are asking. KW is trying to get Jenks to sign a long term deal. KW did the same thing when Garland, Garcia, Buehrle, Contreras, Vazquez were all nearing free agency. He shopped them and got them to extend, even at a discount. Jenks could bring some talent back in return but he has been so solid it's hard to see KW trade him. Plus, like I've said many times on this board, the deals that are rumored with KW never happen. He's all about suprises. From the Nov. 20th, 2005 Philadelphia Inquirer: Thome was traded 5 days later. I'm sure there's more but these things are hard to find.
  25. QUOTE (Brian @ Nov 11, 2008 -> 09:33 PM) That is what I was gonna type. Waited way too long. Probably what the Twins wanted to do. If he misses all year, does that negate a year of arbitration? No. Since he'll be on the major league disabled list he'll still earn a year of service. At least that's how I've always understood it and it worked that way for Liriano. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Nov 11, 2008 -> 09:43 PM) Don't about 100% of players that opt for rehab instead of surgery, wind up having the surgery? Sure as hell seems like it.
