  1. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 9, 2008 -> 03:18 AM) Look, you can throw out all the numbers you want. The eyes don't lie. Jenks: Got people out. Got saves. Got applause. Dotel: Made people sick to their stomachs with his abysmal pitching. Dotel, with all due respect, is a joke. Not as bad as MacDougal or Sisco or the other Royal hack we put in games, of course, but a joke noneheless. Thornton as closer? Maybe (though he'll break out hearts some nights, many more nights than Bobby), but NOT DOTEL. I do agree with you on this one, fiery conjecture is much more valuable than an opinion based in statistics and reason.
  2. Carl Crawford has a $10M team option for 2010 that will most definitely be picked up by whatever club owns his rights at the end of the '09 season. And as Dotel, Thome and Contreras come off the books Danks, Floyd and Quentin enter their first year of arbitration and the second for Jenks, his second.
  3. The Rangers picked up their $6.2M team option on Hank Blalock today.
  4. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 07:32 PM) I think A....I don't think he'd ever play for the White Sox. He's an A.
  5. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 07:30 PM) I'm assuming this is sarcasm that being said i belive Ring is a Brave now. Ring completely bombed with the Braves. They ended up designating him for assignment in August, I believe he's currently without a job.
  6. Bobby's going to make around $3.5M in 2009, maybe double that in 2010 and 8 figures in 2011 as a 30 year old. This is assuming of course that he stays healthy and productive. The "young and cheap" argument can only work for so long. This is about trading a guy a year too early rather than a year too late, if Bobby suffers a serious injury or falls flat on his face some time in the next 2 years his trade value will plummet to zero but he'll still cost a pretty penny to retain in arbitration.
  7. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 7, 2008 -> 02:20 AM) Sounds like Cubs are going to get Peavy this weekend for a package of the ugly Notre Dame guy, Marshall, Pie, and Cedeno. To get one of the 10 best pitchers in baseball (signed long term) for no major pieces in your organization would be a steal. That ugly Notre Dame guy has no reason to waive his no trade clause, no reason at all. I'm sure he would if asked to but I don't understand why.
  8. QUOTE (NCsoxfan @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 02:27 PM) The question is what could we offer? Also, what is Cano's contract situation? '09: $6M '10: $9M '11: $10M '12: $14M team option ($2M buyout) '13: $15M team option ($2M buyout) So for a player with a very limited skill set he's pretty expensive. If he's not stroking doubles into the gaps he's not worth much since he can't run, draw walks or hit for big time power and showed last year that he's prone to lapses in concentration and can get lazy in the field.
  9. QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 02:35 PM) I would hesitate because of the poor "D". I would much rather see the consistently super defense then rely of just offsne. How fast is Cano anyway? Stolen bases, etc? Average footspeed and zero ability to swipe bases.
  10. QUOTE (joeynach @ Nov 6, 2008 -> 02:22 AM) Am I really supposed to get excited about a guy with career #s, .248 Avg and .304 OBP, that rivals Juan Uribe's. Career .802 OPS away from the extreme pitcher's park that is Petco.
  11. Wow, I can't decide which is a worse choice for GG; Young or McLouth. Oh and Torii Hunter won another one. What the f***, I don't even know why they bother handing these things out anymore.
  12. QUOTE (Swishin' Aint Easy @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 06:57 PM) Shows the value of this list....Mclouth just was named a gold-glover in the NL. Or more accurately it says more about what a joke the GG award has become.
  13. Wait, so Don Cooper is now a surgeon/miracle healer? How exactly is he going to "fix" this: http://www.insidesocal.com/dodgers/2008/08...s-mri-resu.html Because that's what was wrong with him in 2008 and why he finished the season on the 60 day DL, shoulder problems. There's still a belief that Penny might need shoulder surgery in the offseason, that's why the Dodgers declined his option not because he forgot how to pitch.
  14. QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 05:06 PM) No that is certainly possible. It seems like there are a lot of defenders of his outfield play last season though around here, and that is a myth because quite frankly he was mediocre in left field last year defensively. Of course, he was perhaps the best all around hitter in the American League so we could certainly live with the defense. I agree that he was bad and I've said it on more than one occasion so I know this isn't directed at me. My hope is that he's moved back to his real position of RF next season and reverts back to the plus defender we thought we were acquiring last offseason.

  16. QUOTE (TCQ @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 02:54 PM) Playing right and left are very similar. They have the same amount of ground they have to cover unless certain fields have a different amount of foul territory on one side of the field for one thing. Also ball hit to them are the same it just depends on the hitter. For example when a lefty hits the ball down the left field linei t will tail, it will do the same thing down the right field line for a righty. By no stretch of the imagination are either easy to play, as unlike cf it is harder to judge balls because you are not looking straight at the hitter. So it isnt easy to play to play corner outfield but it is very similar for each one, its just a matter of having your mind think the opposite way in regards to the hitters orientation. Yeah and adjusting to the new trajectory takes time even if it is just the opposite of RF. If an outfielder spends his entire career in RF (where he's an above average defender) you can't just expect him to switch to LF on the fly without some sort of extended adjustment period.
  17. QUOTE (TCQ @ Nov 5, 2008 -> 11:56 AM) That doesnt make sense right and left fielders cover about the same amount of ground the only difference is that rf should always have the better arm because his throw to third is longer. Dye has a clearly better arm than anyone else in our of The next time Dye gets behind a flyball and runs through it will be his first, he's one of the worst fundamental OF I've ever seen. So his pure arm strength MIGHT be greater than that of CQ (though Edgar Renteria might have a thing or 2 to say about that) but since JD catches every ball flatfooted he's nullifying a great deal of that strength.
  18. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 11:39 PM) I don't think people want Dye traded. But the group of us that is logical about the situation knows that is the most likely scenario. Dye will probably go down as one of my top 5 favorite players to wear a White Sox uniform. Yep, it's not about wanting to ship him off, I also absolutely love the guy and always will.
  19. QUOTE (southsideirish71 @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 11:34 PM) Dye would make sense. He will bring back value, his contract is very attractive for other teams. His production is still very good. It definitely makes the most sense. Of the big 3 Dye: 1.) is the only one that doesn't have a full NTC 2.) is on a 1 year, $11.5M deal which is short term and reasonable 3.) has the most trade value and 4.) probably the best bet to be productive next season.
  20. QUOTE (fathom @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 11:34 PM) Ugh, as you know, Swisher's value goes down the toilet once he moves to RF or 1B. I've still yet to hear Dye's name actually rumored in trade possibilities. Eh, he's gotta play somewhere and LF, DH and CF are off limits so that leaves RF or 1B so his value to the team will have to take a hit if they want to play him everyday. And that bold portion means what exactly? Number of rumors ≠ greater chance of a deal. And if you want a lame trade rumor I'll give you one. Terry Boers spoke to his White Sox "guy" the other day and came away with the feeling that the player KW is trying hardest to trade is JD, this means nothing of course, in fact it probably means less than nothing but you wanted a rumor so there you go.
  21. Or he'll start in RF, in fact if I had to put money on it I'd say Dye would be the one to go.
  22. QUOTE (Paint it Black @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 07:15 PM) http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/blog/index?name=neyer_rob Rob Neyer usually has pretty insightful things to say, and this is no exception. Neyer makes his argument, and I'll make mine short. Name me a better 4th starter, I dare you. Candidates: Tim Wakefield Andy Sonanstine Kyle Davies Kevin Slowey Rich Harden/Ryan Dempster Todd Wellemeyer Joe Saunders Clayton Kershaw
  23. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 03:59 PM) But here's the rub...Washington's best player and face of their franchise missed 1/3 of last season and hasn't put up a >.800 OPS in 2 years. There is no rub. That 1/3 of the season he missed last year was parts of May, all of June and the beginning of July, after returning from that shoulder injury he put up a .306/.370/.455/.825 line the rest of the way. He's only 24 years old and has been an above average offensive player in every year of his career, he's an exciting young player with big time potential on a team that had a $54M payroll and finished with the worst record in the game last season. They won't be trading him for anything short of a king's ransom of young talent, not a 32 year old $11.5M middle of the rotation starter and MAYBE 2 low level prospects 2 3/4 years from now.
  24. QUOTE (SoxFan101 @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 04:28 PM) I don't agree with him being the worse defensive IF. He obviously isn't gold glove worthy but I think I have him somewhere in the middle of the pack defensively. But like Ive said b4 when it comes to defense I always use my eyes over stats which just cant be measured effectively. So you saw enough of every starting SS in baseball last season that you can rank them all defensively? Really?
  25. QUOTE (Texsox @ Nov 4, 2008 -> 03:42 PM) Yep, if baseball ever went to a platoon system, like football, he'd probably never play the field. Not a chance in hell. As long as his name is Derek Jeter he'll be out there in the field doesn't matter if he's the worst shortstop in the game or even crippled they would never "disrespect" the great Derek Jeter by insulting is defensive abilities. If the Yankees viewed Derek Jeter the same way the rest of us do then he would have moved to 3B or 2B when the Yanks acquired A-Rod seeing as how Rodriguez was the vastly superior defensive player at the time of the acquisition.
