QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 14, 2008 -> 03:55 PM) I've never said he isn't statistically good. However, I don't expect him to hit .280 this year. If he did I'd be much more acceptable of him. I didn't have a major problem with him the past couple years. However, I'm not going to lie, I would prefer to use the DH as a spot to rest your everyday players (essentially having 9 to 10 guys on your roster that can play everyday and utilizing the DH to give guys rest or play the lefty/righty match-ups). Thome will probably hit .250 this year (+/- 10 points) and to me that is where when you have a team that already crushes home runs I'll take a pass and take a guy that would hit .50 points higher with 15 hr's who can go 1st to 3rd and play solid defense. In fact he's better than all of those DH's with the exception of Ortiz. I didn't consider Hideki Matsui in there because I consider Giambi a DH more so than Hideki. You just described Randy Winn

QUOTE (GreatScott82 @ May 14, 2008 -> 03:50 PM) Thome and Konerko will be moved further down in the lineup. Probably 5 and 6 by the end of this trip. Yeah their sucking it up right now... its kind of funny how our highest payed players are playing the worst baseball right now. (Konerko .200 hitter for 12 mill/season) (Thome .200 hitter for 14 mill/season) and Buerhle 1-5 for 14 mil/season. YIKES! I know Buerhle will bounce back but as far as Konerko and Thome go, thats 26 millions dollars which can easily be dispersed into making our team better. The Sox are paying Jermaine Dye, Javy Vazquez, Orlando Cabrera and Jose Contreras more than they're paying Thome this season.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 14, 2008 -> 03:37 PM) I will also say that he is a very good value for a team looking for slugging. I don't anticipate him finishing the year with this bad of an average. I think he'll hit .240-.260 with 35hr's and quite a few RBI's and a near .400 OBP. Those are not numbers that I find acceptable but on a team that really lacks power he could be the perfect fit (note, I don't believe the Chicago White Sox is that team). Also, Kalapse brings up a key point. As much as I banter to move Thome, it is all a moot point unless he is willing to accept a deal and I've yet to see the papers even speculate or ask anyone internally whether they believe he would. I assume this is because the media figures Kenny will not move Thome/Konerko because Ozzie/Kenny both really like the two of them. What is unacceptable about a DH with 35+ HR and a .900+ OPS? He's a designated hitter. Look at the rest of the DH's throughout the league (Ortiz, Huff, Gomes, Stairs, Matsui, Hafner, Kubel, Butler, Sheffield, Matthews JR, Bradley, Vidro and Cust) if he fulfills your prediction he'll have numbers equal to or better than the best in the league and be far more productive than the majority. I understand you don't like .280/.410/.560/.970 plodders who strike out 140 times and can't steal a base but when comparing him to his competition he's one of the best.

QUOTE (BigSqwert @ May 14, 2008 -> 02:41 PM) Thome should have been traded at the deadline last year. There was no reason to keep an aging DH getting paid a gazillion dollars Except for the fact that he has a no trade clause and didn't want to be traded.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 14, 2008 -> 02:00 PM) If he gets promoted to Charlotte this year, and hammers the ball there too, then he's a successful 23-year-old at AAA with sick numbers. I think that makes it possible. But we'll see - he'd have to continue to be in fire in AA and do the same in AAA this year. Shelby is currently in high A ball, it'll be at least a year before he sees Charlotte.

QUOTE (Vance Law @ May 14, 2008 -> 01:07 PM) Not sure I follow as Crede's having a career year (for him) as of now. I agree with most everything you say here though, wite. You/Darin Jackson are full of lies, this is hardly the best start to a season of Joe Crede's career. Through first 36 games '08: 7 HR, 25 RBI, .270/.345/.500/.845 Through first 36 games '06: 8 HR, 28 RBI, .323/.361/.577/.938 I'd hardly call his first 1.5 months of '08 a career year. [tangent] Since the start of May Darin Jackson has been saying Crede is a notoriously slow starter which is a lie. Historically he's been pretty brutal in May but April is one of his better months. April of '05: .304/.368/.456/.824 April of '06: .313/.360/.550/.910 April of '08: .258/.320/.527/.847 He seemed to "blossom" in '05 and he was hurt in '07 so '05, '06 and '08 would probably give you the best idea of what Joe Crede is and the numbers say he's damn good in April. [/tangent]

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ May 14, 2008 -> 11:30 AM) I should add, I use the word "athletes" as opposed to "speed" because the last thing I want is a guy like Jerry Owens who is on a roster solely because he's fast. I just want guys that are all around baseball players, because in the end I think if you get enough of those guys you can always end up acquiring that one guy to stick in the middle of the lineup to complete things. It is where my opinion differs from a lot of peoples. Heck, I honestly think if I had a lineup, I would design it with multiple leadoff hitters. Ie, I'd have the top of the order, but than I'd have another leadoff type guy down in the 6 spot in the lineup and throw some production guys behind him and again back to speed at the 9 spot so you can turn 9-1-2 around with a lot of speed if needed. I say this because the leadoff guy only starts the game, but its nice to know you have a few guys throughout your lineup that during the regular course of the game if they happen to leadoff an inning they would be more than capable of being a so called "leadoff" guy. So I need a few examples real quick. 1. Can I have an example of a player who falls into your "athlete" category and 2. what's your definition of "leadoff" guy?

So will Fallon manage to give an interview without staring directly into the camera giggling like an idiot? Perhaps he could wear a fake mustache and midway through the show it could begin to falloff then he could stare into the camera and begin giggling because poorly applied fake mustaches are f***ing hillarious. Or maybe Hiracio Sanz could be his co-host and they could do little skits where they break character 5 seconds in and start giggling because their fake mustaches are falling off and they're a couple of no-talent hacks.

QUOTE (MEANS @ May 14, 2008 -> 11:02 AM) that has always been my problem when we went out and got him after the WS in 05. We really didn't need another slugger, heck we just got rid of Carlos and Maggs a bit before, went out and got some speed and look what happened-WS Champs, then we turn around and get another slugger...seems like we don't learn. Would you consider Carl Everett "speed" because that's who Thome replaced. Anyone who thinks Carl Everett is a better baseball player than Jim Thome is out of their gourd. This "speed" that the '05 Sox added was Scott Podsednik and Tadahito Iguchi and correct me if I'm wrong but up until this season both of those guys were still in the starting lineup. The addition of Thome subtracted no speed from the lineup, unless you consider Rowand to be a speedster and Erstad/Anderson/Mackwiak to be plodders.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ May 13, 2008 -> 05:33 PM) MBINAA was always my fave. I mean, seriously. As if this was a discussion that could ever result in an answer. The term "ace" is so subjective, it makes for an impossibility of logical discussion. Its like asking if jelly bellies are indeed the bomb. JBANTB!!!!!!! That's why it's so awesome. It's a subjective term with no true definition, yet back when Mark Buehrle was a good starting pitcher it seemed everyone had an opinion on the subject and they couldn't wait to express that opinion with their fellow anonymous internet people. A debate with no true answer that everyone wants to argue about? Sign me up.

QUOTE (Tony82087 @ May 13, 2008 -> 02:10 PM) I don't follow the draft too closely yet, but that list looks terrible. Crow at 24? It doesn't look like the most reputable of sites, me thinks the guy who did that has never heard of compensatory picks (for instance; the Brewers actually have 2 picks in the top 8 of the 2nd round thanks to the Cordero and Linebrink signings), not that comp picks are all that important or anything.

QUOTE (Wanne @ May 13, 2008 -> 01:38 PM) I was thinkin' catcher too. They have Paramore going early 2nd...but I think he'll be there for the Sox pick in the 2nd. And he's done it for more than one year too. .376 last year. He's around .325 this year but he was around a .400 clip earlier in the year. If he's there in the 2nd I'd love to have him. Plus...on top of that he's was 1st-Team All Academic in the Pac10. So he's got some smarts back there. The Sox don't have a 2nd round pick, it went to the Brewers as compensation for the Linebrink signing. Plus there's 11 compensatory picks this year so the #1 pick in the second round will be #42 overall. Meaning the Sox second pick (#8 in the 3rd round) will be #79 overall. So there will be a 71 pick difference between the Sox's first and second draft choices.

QUOTE (whitesoxfan101 @ May 10, 2008 -> 12:43 AM) Brian Anderson is an ideal 4th outfielder. He still hits for no power, but he's maintaining a .270 average, is giving good at bats, and playing incredible defense. He should be in for the 8th and/or 9th of every game on defense when we have a lead. The next time will be the first. Ozzie obviously disagrees with this philosophy considering he hasn't done it once this season.

QUOTE (tommy @ May 9, 2008 -> 10:39 PM) Quick question? What is White Sox pitching rotation order? Same from opening day ? Vazquez Floyd Buehrle Danks Contreras or Floyd Buehrle Danks Contreras Vazquez or Buehrle Danks Contreras Vazquez Floyd or Danks Contreras Vazquez Floyd Buehrle or Contreras Vazquez Floyd Buehrle Danks

It's been almost 2 years since the Sox last won in Seattle.

QUOTE (greg775 @ May 9, 2008 -> 10:29 PM) I'm not a big OC fan. He and Swish have been as productive as last year's Toby Hall. ummmmmm no. For the first month of the season Nick Swisher was getting on base 38% of the time in front of the team's supposed best hitters. That's pretty damn productive. I had a bigger impact on the team's success last year than Toby Hall.

QUOTE (G&T @ May 9, 2008 -> 10:23 PM) How does that make you feel? In some cultures Orlando Cabrera's toes would be turned upward in an uncomfortable manner for taking the bat out of a great player's hands. He's lucky he doesn't f***ing live in Turkey. If I were standing next to Orlando Cabrera right now, I'd step on his foot with moderate velocity. It would likely sting for several seconds.
-
f***ing Orlando Cabrera taking the bat out of Carlos Quentin's hands, ridiculous. This will likely be the 5th game out of the last 6 that will end with Carlos Quentin either at the plate (2) or on deck (3).
-
And we will get to see Q one more time.
-
A man needs to reach in order for Quentin to see the plate one more time. It's seems every game lately has ended with the guy in front of Carlos at the plate.

"That ball hit hard . . . but that's a piece of cake for Brian right there, he read that thing like Mary Had a Little Lamb" - Hawk Damnstraightoldman
-
And Joe Crede's OPS continues it's decent towards it's final resting place in the .765 - .785 range. Right around .800 as of now. And if you're test driving a car on the f***ing internet it's not a "literal" test drive, dumbass.

Jermaine is feelin' it right now.
