QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 2, 2007 -> 03:25 PM) Furcal hopefully... And this obsession people have with Hunter is sickening. Face it, Hunter is old and just is a little better then a mediocre player who had a huge contract season. 5 years 90 million for Hunter would be one of the worst moves in baseball. You're delusional. I'm still waiting for you to back any of this up. How is he mediocre? HIS HUGE CONTRACT SEASON WAS NOT THAT MUCH BETTER THAN WHAT HE HAS DONE IN YEARS PAST. You act like he's been a .750 OPS player for every year of his career until last year when he shot up to .950. Last year was the 4th .800+ OPS season of his career and only 13 OPS points better than his 2006 numbers hell even 2005 was .789. THAT'S NOT MEDIOCRE. You can keep saying that he's slowed down in the OF but the Cell is one of the smallest centerfields in the league and he's still going to make all the plays. He's 32 years old, you act like he's 38.

Kaz Matsui would be a disaster.

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Nov 2, 2007 -> 11:49 AM) Use salary if you have to, but making a statement like that is flat out lying. Seriously, since when is .712 = .636, and not 76 points higher? Depending on the pricetag, I'd much prefer Crisp to Owens. And Crisp also has the potential to put up an .800 OPS, I don't think Owens will ever come within 70 points of that number.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 2, 2007 -> 02:30 AM) A modestly built guy at 6'3, 200 pounds who somehow was an 11th round pick, even with his great arm, suffers his 2nd bizarre, yet major injury in about 6 months. If this guy isn't a candidate for HGH/steroid/something that makes you brittle but helps you get stronger use, I don't know who is. Going into the draft Zumaya only threw in the low 90's, he magically gained 10 MPH on his fastball after playing in the Tigers minor league system. If Joel were throwing 100-103 MPH before the draft he would have been a high round pick.

That Anaheim trade is not "out there" it was crazy speculation from some old bastard on Chicago Sports Radio that a few Sox fans decided to run with. There's just no part of that deal that makes any sense from the Angels' side.

QUOTE(sircaffey @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 11:29 PM) Why is that? He had a very similar season in 2006. I don't want him, but he's still a very good player. I doubt many people here are worried about the first 2 years of the contract, maybe even 3 years. It's years 4 and 5 that are the most worrisome. I already tried this approach, it did not elicited a response. I'll take an overpaid Torii Hunter roaming centerfield for the next 4 to 5 years over Jerry Owens in year 1 followed by failed experiments numbers 4, 5 and 6 in '09, '10 and '11. Some stability in CF would be nice and when it's a very good player who also happens to be one of the few baseball players that I can actually tolerate (personality wise) it's a good situation in my mind.

QUOTE(TitoMB345 @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 09:50 PM) Can I ask why Buehrle's value is so low? The grades are based on the last 2 seasons and Buehrle was terrible in 2006.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 09:55 PM) If Guillen became available, I'd be all for moving Crede now, sliding Fields to 3rd and than having the Sox find a way to trade for Furcal and pick up a solid CFer (even if that means Crisp). If the Sox were to sign both Guillen and Hunter (unlikely, I know) they'd have an outfield that has a very good shot at 3 .800+ OPS hitters. When was the last time the Sox got that sort of offensive fire power from all 3 outfield positions? Guillen has posted an .800+ OPS in 4 of the last 5 seasons including a .928 OPS in 2003 and an .813 last year in one of the best pitcher's parks in baseball. The only season he had any troubles was 2006 when he was injured for most of the year. He's a pretty good defender who can play either corner OF spot well and has an absolute cannon for an arm. An outfield of Guillen/Hunter/Dye would be something to get excited about.

QUOTE(bigruss22 @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 08:22 PM) Maybe this is dumb of me, but are these values the ones for declaring a player to be a type A free agent or is it just a ranking. Yes
-
Crede was barely a type B player despite having a career year in 2006. I stand by my original assessment: Joe Crede will not bring back any compensation when he walks at the end of '08.
-
Also, there's talk that Jose Guillen will opt out of his contract in Seattle and become a free agent, he'd be a great fit for LF IMO.
-
The Padres declined the '08 team option on Rob Mackowiak today so he is a free agent. Now he needs to come back home.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 1, 2007 -> 06:12 PM) Uribe's option CAN NOT be picked up. He'd be getting paid what, 5 million(?) to suck. If we can't find a replacement within a certain amount of time, we could then give him a lesser contract, as Uribe is not even close to being worth 5 million. Also, I'd much rather over pay for Rowand then Hunter as Rowand hasn't shown massive signs of slowing down and won't be 40 in the final year of his contract. With that being said, we could go without either and save the money for something else. Neither will Torii Hunter. He'll be 36 or 37 (depending on the length of the deal [4-5 years]) and only 2 years older than Rowand. And as for Hunter never living up to the numbers he posted in his contract year, he had nearly identical numbers in 2006 with only a 13 point difference in OPS between the 2 seasons so there is some sort of track record of success. I'm really not all that opposed to giving Hunter a lucrative long term deal as I'm beginning to think money will not be a huge issue for this team in the coming years. He's a good, exciting player who's well liked around baseball and very very marketable.

I'd rather not see Castillo in a Sox uni. He's become the ultimate singles hitter and doesn't have much left in his legs so he doesn't steal many bases. If next year his OBP next year is below .350 his OPS will dip below .700. He's also looking for a 3 year deal. So you'd be signing a guy who's a risk to put up a sub .700 OPS and steal 15-20 bases. KW would be regretting that signing by 2009.
-
Kobe won't accept any deal that involves Deng leaving Chicago, so whether or not Paxson is willing to move Luol is a moot point.
-
Miguel Cabrera will not be a free agent until the end of the 2009 season.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Oct 31, 2007 -> 05:10 PM) IF healthy, and that's the big if with acquiring Crisp, he would probably be the perfect #2 hitter for us. He could hit .280/.300 with an OBP around the .350/.360 which is exactly what this lineup is. I wouldn't trade Carter for him. But I'd probably trade any prospects outside of our top 5 or so to get a deal done. And I would try to include Brian Anderson in a deal if Boston were interested. .350/.360? He's never posted an OBP above .345 but now after 2 seasons with a combined .324 OBP he's going to shoot up over .350? -
