Linebrink or Dotel to Sox?
Probably because I don't think Linebrink is very good. His home/away splits from his time with the Padres are frightening and coming to bandbox like the Cell is not going to help him any. It's no coincidence that bad relievers show up in San Deigo and suddenly they're great, just take a look at their bullpen from last year it's full of journeyman relievers and rookies/2nd year players with mid 1 and low 2 ERAs. Kevin Towers is a genius when it comes to putting together a bullpen, the only problem is once those guys leave they tend to fall apart. I'm not about to throw $6-$7M a year and 4 years at a guy who I don't think is a very good pitcher and when you couple that with the fact that it will cost us a 2nd round pick I think it could be a crippling move. Even if the Sox suck at drafting, taking away picks isn't going to help matters, the more high round picks this organization has the better the odds that they get lucky and pick a legitimate talent.

Andruw Jones Speculation
QUOTE(elrockinMT @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 03:30 PM) Plus why woud you want to give a .222 hitter 16-17 million for a year. That kind of money should sign Hunter or Rowand and they have a real good upside too Because that .222 hitter is not a .222 hitter and he has been a much better player over the course of his career than both Rowand and Hunter plus neither Rowand nor Hunter are worth the years they will get. If the Sox could get Jones (a first ballot hall of famer) to sign a 1 year deal that could be the best possible scenario for this club.

Torii Hunter
QUOTE(joeynach @ Nov 14, 2007 -> 11:56 AM) Hunter is 32 those guys were like 29 or 30. Soriano was 31 and Carlos Lee was 30. There isn't a big difference in age there and the one thing that Hunter holds over both of these guys is his perceived ability to play an excellent defensive centerfield (while be a less accomplished hitter than both.) Soriano is a man without a position, terrible no matter where he plays and Carlos Lee is just a league average defensive leftfielder.

You don't lose a draft pick when you sign a type B free agent. The team that lost that player just gets a sandwich pick.

Linebrink or Dotel to Sox?
QUOTE(bschmaranz @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 08:04 PM) Well someone correct me if I'm wrong but we don't lose our first pick if we brought in Linebrink. I'd be down with bringing either in. If the Sox brought in Hunter and Linebrink the Twins would get our 2nd and the Brewers would get our 3rd. That doesn't sound like a very good plan for restocking the system.

QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Nov 13, 2007 -> 06:12 PM) ... maybe KW is also throwing in Jamie Burke's jersey that Toriiii knocked him out of. Not like Burke is using it. Which is a shame really, the .761 OPS he posted while acting as Johjima's backup last season would have been nice to have.

Sox Interested in Cabrera
The Miami Herald seems to think the Marlins may look to move Uggla as well. 83 XBH last year including 31 HR. There are some major flaws to his game but I have decided to overlook those (AVG/SO) and focus on the fact that he had 50 f***ing doubles last year. If the Marlins want to dump him I'll take him.

Pedroia, Braun ROY's.
So I assume Beckett wins the Cy Young today.

The other Jose???
Ozuna, Burgeouis and Mackowiak are all infinitely better options as are about 20 other middle infield free agents who aren't 38 years old, coming off major knee surgery and just plain bad like Jose Valentin. He is an incredibly tender lover and his rock hard abs and large member would be an asset in the clubhouse but he offers nothing of value as a baseball player.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 12, 2007 -> 09:29 PM) ooh wow... yeah, I've changed my mind. I posted those and Holliday's home/away splits in all the Rockies playoff threads, my rants got no replies, now I know no one reads my gibberish.

QUOTE(WhiteSoxfan1986 @ Nov 12, 2007 -> 06:58 PM) Look at how he fared away from Coors and you'll change your mind. 241 point difference between home and away, another blatant case of Coors inflation. THAT .393 ROAD SLUGGING PERCENTAGE IS DAMN SEXY!! He's going to be a pretty damn good major league SS (~.800 OPS guy) but as long as he plays half of his games at Coors Field he will be an overrated offensive player.

Does anyone think the Sox could maybe pull off a Jose Contreras for Prince Fielder swap? The Brewers could move Braun to 1B and they'd get that big time veteran starter they've been looking for, it would also allow KW to move Konerko for some additional pieces. This sort of move is not without precedent remember the Red Sox did trade Jeff Bagwell for Larry Anderson, young 1B get moved all the time for starting pitching.

Wednesday when he signs his fancy new 5 year $75M deal. So KW should be handing him a shiny new Sox jersey by Friday.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 04:18 PM) Linebrink is 125/152 or 82.2% (discrepency from Kalapses numbers) Yeah I read that wrong. I counted his 6 from 2003 twice.

QUOTE(BearSox @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 03:50 PM) Well then he can't hold a lead late in a game. Whats the difference. The only difference is that these come in the 7th and 8th instead of the 9th. So what does that say about Scot Shields then? He's blown 18 saves the last 3 seasons or Linebrink who's blown 33 saves since joining the Padres or Joel Zumaya who's blown 9 over the past 2 seasons in 50 less innings than Bell? 13 blown saves over a 3 1/2 year span is actually a pretty low number.

2007 Gold Glove/Silver Slugger Award Winners
The Silver Slugger Award winners were announced today. C Russell Martin 1B Prince Fielder 2B Chase Utley SS Jimmy Rollins 3B David Wright OF Carlos Beltran OF Matt Holliday OF Carlos Lee P Micah Owings C Jorge Posada 1B Carlos Pena 2B Placido Polanco SS Derek Jeter 3B Alex Rodriguez OF Vladimir Guerrero OF Ichiro Suzuki OF Magglio Ordonez DH David Ortiz. Jimmy Rollins over Hanley Ramirez is a joke. It's almost as bad as Alex Rodriguez losing out to a vastly inferior player in 2006.

I'd say Sweeney for Heath Bell or one of the other incredibly overrated Padres relievers is a very real possibility.

What the dilio?
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 12:17 PM) Joe Crede career .259 .305 .446 .750 Josh Fields .244 .308 .480 .788 Better? Nope. Josh as a rookie already is producing the same as can be expected from Joe. In his minor league career he has shown a propensity to strike out, but also get on base. In the end they may have similar batting avg's but josh should have superior OBP, SLG, OPS, and walk numbers. Field's first stint as an every day 3B he posted a not great .958 FPCT Joe Crede's first stint (2002) produced a .938 FPCT. The next full season showed an improvement to .964 Don't even bother, some people just can not be swayed no matter how much evidence you throw at them.

What the dilio?
QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Nov 9, 2007 -> 10:58 AM) Sort of and not really. It's quite mysterious, really. For example, in this year's rankings, A-Rod wasn't ranked as the best player -- I believe it was Ortiz. It's a clusterf*** of a system that needs to be fixed, as crappy middle relievers like Scott Linebrink get two picks and average starting pitchers like Jon Garland are somehow only type B's (which don't give compensation anymore, IIRC). You get a sandwich pick for the loss of a type B free agent but the team that signs said player does not lose a draft pick for signing him. I think I'm going to put this somewhere just for reference: Type A: Top 20% - 1st round pick and a sandwich pick. Team that signs the player loses their 1st rounder unless they have a top 15 pick then they lose a 2nd rounder. Type B: Top 40% (but not top 20%) - Sandwich pick. Team that signs the player does not lose a pick. And I agree with you, it's a f***ing joke of a system.

Sox Interested in Cabrera
How are you trading for Cabrera without giving up one of Fields or the prospects from a Konerko trade? If it's possible to get him without subtracting one of the two then you probably have the most potent lineup in White Sox history but I don't really see how that could be pulled off.
