QUOTE(greg775 @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 08:29 PM) Iguchi has been fabulous for the Phillies. So has Rowand. The Season From Hell continues. Comparing Iguchi to Richar is like comparing Anna Kournikova to Kathy Griffin. Who gives a s*** about Iguchi? There wasn't a single good reason to keep Tadahito but there were many good reasons to trade him.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 04:24 PM) This should clear some things up.... http://www.soxtalk.com/forums/index.php?s=...t&p=1496142 Ah I see now, he's mentally disturbed.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 04:18 PM) I saw this thread knowing the Phillies game was close. Just now, I looked at the box score, and I was sure I was going to see that Rowand had hit a game-winning homer. Much to my surprise, it was Chase Utley with the winning hit. So, why exactly was this thread started? It was Rowand's passion which put them over the top in this one. Aaron's fire lifted Utley's game to the next level.

QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 04:05 PM) Great, glad you feel better. Go out and buy his jersey and maybe check Ebay for his baseball cards and send him a self addressed envelope for his autograph then light some candles and light the fireplace and have a glass of wine, maybe you'll feel all warm and fuzzy inside. Then smash your face into a wall.

QUOTE(SoxAce @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 03:56 PM) ^^^^^^^^^ BTW, someone should bump the record predictions for this team when it's all said and done. See who came close to the win total. I'm confident my prediction of 68 wins will be fairly accurate.

My question is, did Zombie really need to add a brutal gang rape to the film? It just seemed so unnecessary.

QUOTE(knightni @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 12:13 PM) We can't get the 2nd overall unless an NL team starts sucking and TB starts winning. Um, no. When determining draft order league is not a determining factor. The first 3 picks in the draft could come from the same division if those teams had the three worst records in baseball.
-
QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Aug 30, 2007 -> 08:35 AM) I rarely pay attention to the MLB draft for various reasons, but I do wonder if teams trade and package trade picks to move up in the draft much in the same way NFL and NBA teams do? You can't trade picks in the MLB draft, hence why the first round usually lasts only a few minutes (at least until ESPN got a hold of it.)

QUOTE(greg775 @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 11:34 PM) Amen. And no Cisco. No MacDougal. No Richar (sorry Richar lovers). No Thornton. No Boone. No Uribe. No Floyd or Danks. No Erstad, my god, no Erstad. That's a good list for starters. And no Walker. And no Owens except as a reserve. Lefties are hitting just .197/.275/.268/.543 off of Logan this year in case you don't know, those are some of the most dominant LOOGY numbers in the game. Opponents are hitting .204/.348/.323/.670 off of MacDougal this year when AJ catches for him. Those numbers skyrocket to .417/.475/.556/1.031 when Hall is behind the plate. This is a common trend with White Sox pitchers. It does seem silly to give up on a 22 year old lefty who has been pretty close to league average for a majority of the season and has shown more than a few flashes of brilliance, maybe we can keep Danks around.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 10:15 PM) I thought people on this board didn't like the all or nothing approach? Isn't Fields probably the most extreme all or nothing hitter on the team? It depends on what "people" you're talking about because I'm certainly not one of them.
-
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 10:08 PM) Funny what a difference a year makes. Brian Anderson has on OBP of .290 and he can't hit a lick, defense be damned. Josh Fields has an OBP of .290, he's a future star and a ROY candidate. Fields' SLG is over 100 points higher than '06 Anderson and his OPS+ is 30 points higher -- 65 for BA and 95 for JF -- (which is a BIG difference.)

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 10:48 AM) i dont really look at slg for a lead off hitter at all. I dont see HR as THAT much value IMO. I like doubles, OBP, steals. either way those guys dont have any power to speak of. HR>2B, it's 2 extra bases and an automatic R and RBI. 3B are also better. If a leadoff hitter has a higher SLG% that means he's putting himself in scoring position more often, meaning less outs need to be sacrificed and pitches don't have to be wasted for SBs. Extra points if he can knock himself in with a HR ever once in a while.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 10:40 AM) Maybe doubles should be something we look for? Doubles are a part of SLG%, if you're going to list doubles you might as well go the whole way and list 3B and HR as well, not to mention their contract status.

Furcal's .351 OBP and 35 SB per season would fill 2 holes and would be a pretty a much smaller monetary investment than someone like Young.
-
QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 10:33 AM) Furcal and Renteria may be available in trade, for something like Garland-plus. And they are $10M and $13M for 2008 respectively (or maybe its the other way around, I can't recall). I think I'd rather have Furcal, if we can make it happen. Furcal is $13M and Renteria is $9M (w/ $11M TO for '08 + $3M buyout) so he's guaranteed $12M if you acquire him. I'd absolutely love to have Furcal since he'd fill the leadoff spot, play some solid D and would come in on a very limited investment (only a year left on his deal). If Rafael has a productive 2008 season with the White Sox you try to work out a long term deal and make him the franchise SS/leadoff hitter for the next 4 years or so. Renteria has already failed once in the AL and would steal leave a hole at the top of the lineup so I really wouldn't even consider him especially if the asking price is even close to what it was during the season (Garland). And is there a reason Orlando Hudson has NEVER been used at SS? He has an incredibly quick first step, good foot speed and a very solid arm, he's probably the best defensive 2B in the game. If we're talking about a guy like Michael Young who has played most of his career out of position at SS then why not make a run at Orlando Hudson and switch him over to the other middle infield position? He's pretty much guaranteed to be a superior defender to the likes of Young and Eckstein.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 09:50 AM) I dont know if hitting .300 is league average nowadays. I have the league avg for SS at .277. In fact for SS he is above the league avg in every hitting category. Its true he is a bit expensive, but there arent many options out there for us to satisfy both the hole at SS and a lead off hitter. He has a .766 OPS, his AVG doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot when his IsoD is only 53 and he's slugging in the low .400's. His OPS+ is 99, 100 is league average. From 2009-2013 (age 32-36 seasons) he'll be guaranteed $16M a year, that's not "a bit expensive" that's possibly the most overpaid player in the league. There really isn't anything in the numbers that makes me want Michael Young for even $10M a year let alone $16M. I'll take David Eckstein at say 3 years, $15M over Michael Young even though I truly dislike David Eckstein as a ballplayer.
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Aug 29, 2007 -> 08:32 AM) I wonder if there is a package we could put together to net Michael Young from the rangers. That would fill a #1 hitter and a SS hole. Also would make alot of the go with the pitches lovers on this site. I'm not so sure spending 6 years, $85M on a 31 year old close to league average hitter with little speed who's playing out of position at SS -- he's obviously better suited for 2B -- is the best plan of attack. $16M a year for a guy who has posted an .830+ OPS only twice in his career and hasn't reached that mark in 2 years doesn't sound like a good investment, it sounds an awful lot more like another situation where Tom Hicks decided to throw WAY too much money at one player.

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 09:11 PM) The thought of Jones coming in at a discount really doesn't seem realistic to me, what with Boras as his agent. Boras got Magglio a 5 year, $75 mill deal, and there was no guarantee Maggs would ever play again, let alone be a productive player. If Jones gets a discount, it will be at a shade lower than what Boras expects, which is probably 18-20 mill per over 6-7. That said, I figure you're probably looking at a 6 year, $102 mill for Jones, give or take a year or some cash. I'm not about to give that to Jones. The deal Boras got for Ordonez is actually better than you let on, sure it's $75M guaranteed over 5 years but there's 2 very attainable vesting options tacked onto the end of that deal which can push the total contract to 7 yrs, $105M. All that for a player who was coming off a very serious injury and had many questions about his future. Scott Boras is a f***ing magician, just watch him get Corey Patterson and Julian Tavarez huge deals this offseason.

QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Aug 28, 2007 -> 07:47 PM) Wow. When was the last time there was not a game thread on a day that the board was functioning? I've made like game threads over the past 2 weeks or so in the 2nd inning of games 6 games.

QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 11:52 PM) Mediocre? Before Monday's game, he had batted .183/.213/.192 when leading off an inning. He's hit .197/.228/.221 with nobody out, and .208/.250/.226 in his first at-bat of the game against a starter. I realized my mistake almost as soon as I typed it. Horrific, putrid and dreadful would probably suit him better.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 10:13 PM) The most underrated play was a triple Carl Everett had against the Tigers during the last week of the season. We had lost two games in a row to them, were hitting terrible, and he had a huge 2-out, 2 RBI triple that opened the flood gates for the rest of the season. We must have outscored the opposition by a ton from that point forward. Carl hit the triple in the 5th inning with the game tied 1-1, the Sox went on to win that game 8-2 and outscore their opponents 21-9 from that point forward.

QUOTE(fathom @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 07:34 PM) These numbers being thrown around for Hunter are scary. I'm definitely getting into DA's corner that KW will say we made an effort, but the number was too high. We'll probably sign Patterson for 3 yrs, 15 million. Patterson = Boras, however

QUOTE(GreatScott82 @ Aug 27, 2007 -> 09:16 PM) Than who should be the leadoff man? ANd what possition will it come by? And whats the difference between mediocre and decent? So if someone is playing mediocre they are not decent? I like the idea of Rafael Furcal, personally. Hell, I'd almost rather have Eckstein at the top of the lineup and I can't stand him. We'll see what sort of options pop up once we hit the offseason, players will be made available via trade. One things for certain however, I will NOT embrace Owens simply because he's the only speedy slap hitter currently with the ballclub.
