White Sox vs. Phillies, 6/12/07 (L)

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 08:14 PM) Jesus Christ... Ninth inning, Verlander over the century mark, second pitch fastball at 98, third pitch slider outside corner. It'll be fun facing him, Bonderman, Porcello and Miller the next ten years. My gosh, Verlander is f***ing sick. Top of the ninth and he just hit 102 wow. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 08:00 PM) Here's the question I have: why in the world would the Yanks do that trade now? If we traded for Abreu, we'd probably have to give him an extension. He reminds me so much of the offensive version of Javy in that way. He has a no trade clause so at the very least they'd have to pick up his $16M option for next year. QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 08:00 PM) Lol. Ain't over yet hater. -

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 07:56 PM) I have to imagine the Yanks would be willing to toss in a lot of cash in on that deal. How would Abreu be as a leadoff hitter for 2008? Why would the Yankees just throw in cash in exchange for Jermaine Dye? The whole idea is to unload the Abreu contract, if the Yankees are including money you're including more talent. THAT does not help this team one bit. Abreu has said time and time again that he does not want to leadoff no matter how much sense it might make. -

QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 07:48 PM) Abreu with a 3 run homer off of Webb. Too bad the Sox wanted nothing to do with him. \He's now batting .275 and has an OBP around .365. I still wouldn't make that deal, the fact that it will cost $16M to retain him beyond this season is a deal breaker. That much money tied up in a player like Abreu would destroy any financial flexibility the Sox might have this offseason. And what are you including along with Dye to get the Yankees to take on some of that deal? That trade would not have helped the Sox win in '08. -

I really hope Ozzie's next managerial gig is with a National League team, watching all the early double switching and unnecessary bunting would be truly great television. -

So is anyone going to defend the double switch? -

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 06:57 PM) I think its more than that. We have watched the decline of an old player. Jose was at 94-96 mph on his fastball which has fallen off to 88-91. He no longer has the nasty break on his sidearm fastballs or his two-seemers. He's done, and frankly we should deal him to philly or NYM asap. Any way the Sox can rid themselves of him without eating any of the contract is fine by me, the sooner the better. I really don't even care about the return a fringe prospect would be just fine. -

Ugh, if I never had to see Contreras pitch again I'd be happy. Hopefully he'll be dealt this offseason because I'd much rather watch Gio suck in the bigs for $10M less than the Bronze Grandpa. -

Ken Griffey Jr heading to Atlanta?

The $12M can be better spent elsewhere. The Sox have no position prospects as is why deal your best one for a 30+ year old former steroid user with deminishing defensive abilities at the most important defensive position on the diamond who makes $12M+ a year? And with Fields gone who takes over a 3B? Must I add that KW and Oz have mentioned to people close to them that they'd never want Miguel Tejada in their clubhouse? The Sox really can't afford to be shelling out $12M+ on players unless they fill a need such as leadoff hitter/CF. And besides if the Sox want to even come close to affording another big money position player then they're going to need a pitching making near minimum like Gio to take the roster spot of a departed big money starter. The deal would be a disaster on many levels. -

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 04:59 PM) I don't think I'd trade Buehrle for Weeks. Starting pitchers like Buehrle don't grow on trees and Weeks is no sure fire thing. I realize some people aren't as huge of Buehrle fans as me, but he's got insane value. He'd easily get 15 or so per year over 5 years on the open market and I'd imagine you could get the two best prospects at a minimum for him. Any trade I bring up that involves Buehrle comes with the automatic qualifier that the White Sox have tried but feel they will not be able to re-sign Mark. I want Buehrle re-signed and if it took a 5 year, $15M contract to get it done I'm all for it but if the Sox feel they will not be able to lock him up then I'd be all for trading him for the best deal out there as opposed to picking up a few draft picks for him. -
QUOTE(RibbieRubarb @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 04:24 PM) See how far Cleveland jumps when their young players start entering Arbitration years. That's why Cleveland locks up their young players in their 3rd full year giving them long term contracts that buyout all arbitration years as well as their first year or two of free agency. It's a risky move since you're giving a lot of money to young players who have yet to really establish themselves in the league but if these guys do continue to be studs they have them locked up long term for a below market value price.

QUOTE(iamshack @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 04:17 PM) Speaking of the Brew Crew...I wonder whether if they might have some interest in Mark if they still believe they can win the NL Central come late July... Would they deal us an oft-injured Rickie Weeks and a few prospects? Perhaps their first round pick who will inevitably be blocked by Fielder, LaPorta? 1.) LaPorta can not be traded until next year since he was drafted during the 2007 season. 2.) Weeks and prospects? You're not getting a franchise talent like Weeks straight up for Buehrle let alone with a couple of pieces included. He's had some injuries since taken over the starting role but he's still 24 and insanely talented. That being said, I'd deal Buehrle straight up for Weeks right now if the deal were on the table. -

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 01:35 PM) Well lets think about this: If we can swing for another just about ready for the bigs SP like Danks/Gio. We could swing some of that saved cash, deal one of our other starters and big an even bigger splash this upcoming offseason. If we could keep Buehrle, insert either Gio or another young guy into the rotation and take some of Dye, Gooch, etc's sal to land maybe Ichiro or something like that, we keep fans, get younger and move forward. Siging both Buehrle and Ichiro is a possibility but in order for he finances to work you're going to need a player making near minimum in 2 OF spots, 3B and 2B, a SP will need to be dealt (Count) and Mackowiak will have to be boughtout or his contract. That second base spot is going to be a though one to fill unless you can deal a vet for a middle infielder by the ASB. -
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 01:25 PM) Jason. Sox like claimed him off waivers or signed him as a 6 year FA or something. Anyways, looks like he'll be a career minor leaguer with a potential call up to the majors always a possibility for someone who reaches AAA. http://www.thebaseballcube.com/players/B/J...Bourgeois.shtml I believe the Sox acquired him from the Mariners earlier this year for cash considerations.

Ken Griffey Jr heading to Atlanta?
Kalapse replied to Steve9347's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
All I know is, if KW and JR are afraid of what the writers might say after moving a few veterans I'm not sure how this team is going to compete in the coming years. The farm system is barren when it comes to position prospects and the upcoming free agent markets are not going to help matters. Without a few deals swung sometime very soon that bring in some young talented position players we will be looking at a few more losing seasons from this team especially with all the money that is tied up between a few players next season. -
In 33 plate appearances this season Owens didn't draw a single walk while striking out 6 times. Atleast Ryan Sweeney in his first 33 PA this season managed to walk 4 times while K'ing only 3.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 12:34 PM) Just what we need, another guy who cant hit LHP Or a breaking ball, 3 sliders and Jones is done. The guy is Pedro Cerrano personified, only without the insane power and badass goatee.
-
QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 12, 2007 -> 11:40 AM) He's light years better than a lot of those guys and would be a real nice role player in the lower part of the order. However, I would admit that he's slowing down a bit. Still, I'd have no problem picking up Ichiro or another name, plus adding a guy like Jones and than giving someone like Sweeney the other spot. I'd much rather give the job to Terrero who's faster, a MUCH better defender, has similar power and will make $5M less next season. With $70M in guaranteed money already tied up in next year's payroll I'd much rather not waste $5M on a mediocre pansy like Jones.
-
QUOTE(bigred3535 @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 07:24 PM) I'm just saying it sucks that, any way you slice it, no one's having a good season. At least back in the late 90's/early 2000's when we were mediocre you could always root for Frank or Maggs cause they would still play well, but It's just depressing to root for a bunch of guys hitting .230. Except for the big country boy in the 3 hole with the 1.000+ OPS of course.
-
QUOTE(Steff @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 11:21 AM) I don't see how. They have regurgitated actors in the past. In last night's credits he was not credited as "Nicky Leotardo" he was credited as "guy at the bar" (sic). If he was credited as NL, then this theory holds water. He was not. Similar to Vito being "Fatass in Bakery" when Christopher flipped out on the kid behind the counter then a season later he's a regular character but not the same person.

QUOTE(tonyho7476 @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 10:11 AM) the brothas at the end > were the ones who tried to kill Tony and only clipped > him in the ear (was that season 2 or 3?). So one of them is a zombie?
-
QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 12:23 AM) Tony's dead. Remember he said that your mind goes blank before you die. He just got shot QUOTE(rangercal @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 12:35 AM) The screen blacked out from the audience point of view. It is not over for Tony, it is over for us, the viewers. The Sopranos live. This is just what David Chase wanted and exactly why I thought it was an amazing finale.

He got all cozy playing under Dusty Baker and demanded a trade when he found out he'd be playing for a hardass like Piniella, I'm sure he'd get along great with the new Tight-ass Ozzie. He'll make $4M this year and $5M next year, I really don't want a mediocre 33 year old in Jones taking up $5M next season when KW is trying to rebuild the ballclub. QUOTE(palehose23 @ Jun 11, 2007 -> 12:28 AM) Jacque Jones would be a great pick up for the Sox. 1. He is a career .280 hitter with left handed power 2. He is a Sox killer- get him before someone else gets him 3. He is a Cub and nothing would be better than him being good for us while he was a so called bust for the Cubs He put up a .317 OBP his last 2 seasons in Minnesota. That's beyond pathetic.

QUOTE(dasox24 @ Jun 10, 2007 -> 11:28 PM) Well, I stand corrected at least on the performance issue. I have a friend who is a Braves fan and never liked Betemit, so I kinda just assumed his stats sucked. My bad. I normally don't make mistakes like that. However, according to ESPN, he'll be 27 in July. Are they wrong? This is actually kind of weird Baseball Reference, the Dodgers website, TSN, The Baseball Cube and Wikipedia all say he'll be 26 in November but Yahoo, Fox Sports and ESPN say he'll be 27 in July. I don't know how the hell old he is. On a related note chisox.com says Jermaine Dye's middle name is Terrell but ESPN says his middle name is Trevell. Odd. Interesting. According to Betemit and his lawyer, Wilson is 25 and born in November of '81 but according to the Braves his uncle presented them with a birth certificate in 1996 that said he was born in July of '80.
