QUOTE(SoxFan101 @ Sep 7, 2006 -> 12:33 AM) Yeah but those numbers are more typical of a guy you would want in the 3 hole not leading off. Reyes is more of an ideal leadoff hitter. If you stick Bobby Abreu in the leadoff spot right now like the Phillies wanted to do he'd basically become the best leadoff hitter in the league, until Sizemore is moved out of the 1 spot he will remain the best at what he does which is leadoff. What he's doing right now is perfect for a leadoff man even if his talents could be better utilized in the 3 hole.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:57 PM) Next season is going to be really special, as far as guys gettitng to the 500 mark. Off the top of my head, Manny, Frank, and Thome are all within a reasonable stiking distance. In fact, I believe Manny and Thome are now tied at, IIRC, 469. I'd absolutely LOVE to see Frank hit 500 at the Cell. That'd be one helluva moment. Jim, too, but Frank (at this point) has a bigger place in my heart. How insane is it that Alex Rodriguez will likely hit career HR number 500 next season at the ripe old age of 32? Frank Thomas - 480 HR Jim Thome - 469 Manny Ramirez - 469 Alex Rodriguez - 460 Gary Sheffield - 453 Tom Glavine - 287 Wins Randy Johnson - 279 Pedro Martinez - 2986 K Craig Biggio - 2916 H Trevor Hoffman - 473 SV (RECORD: 478 Lee Smith) Craig Biggio - 281 HBP (RECORD: 287 Hughie Jennings) 2007 could be a historic season for career milestones

QUOTE(SoxAce @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:40 PM) My bad kalapse, I'm a huge Jose Reyes fan. Once Reyes puts up a .910 OPS out of the leadoff spot come and talk to me. Sizemore is just an amazing talent, a .378 OBP, above average speed, nice pop (25+ HR), .300 hitter with stellar defense in CF? Yeesh.

You do know Miguel doesn't call his own game right? He gets all the pitches called from the dugout.

QUOTE(JDsDirtySox @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:36 PM) I wasn't talking about Anderson... my conversation with Fathom was about what type of hitter we see Ryan Sweeney as in the future. The wrong name came out when I was typing, I know who you were talking about.
-
QUOTE(JDsDirtySox @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:32 PM) I would love to seem him be a Grady Sizemore like hitter. I know he doesn't have Sizemore's speed, but I think his plate discipline could be very comparable. Grady Sizemore is currently the best leadoff hitter in baseball, bar none and well on his way to having an amazing career. That's far too much to be asking of Sweeney.

QUOTE(southsideirish @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:32 PM) uh oh - maybe it is effort? Ozuna also seems like he tries harder than anyone else on this team. I am not saying it is true, I am just saying that is what it seems like. No, no it's really not effort. Anderson busts it down the line just as hard as Ozuna, yet Ozuna makes it down much faster, he just has more pure speed than Anderson it's pretty appearant if you watch either attempt to run 90 feet at full speed who the faster of the 2 is.
-
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:24 PM) Really? I bet it is closer than you think. If the scouting reports I've read on both of them are any indication then no, it's not really close at all. Not to mention the visual evidence which points in Ozuna's favor.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:13 PM) Who thinks Anderson is the fastest on the team? He might be the most graceful runner on the team, but Ozuna is far and away our fastest player. There are 14 guys in the majors with 30 or more steals right now, and everyone of them is a speedster (except maybe Pods, but that's another story). Every single guy on that list is significantly faster than Anderson. I don't have his career minor league stats, but since when have we projected him to be a 30-40 stolen base guy? 1.) Ozzie said he thinks Anderson is the fastest guy on the team which frankly is a crock. 2.) Anderson had 20 total SBs over 3 years in the minors his minor league high was 10 for Winston Salem he also stole 17 for Arizona in his final year in college. Anderson is more known for being a smart baserunner and a good runner with an excellent first step, he's not particularly fast.

QUOTE(fathom @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 09:12 PM) I'm rooting for the Tigers to sweep the Twins. Very nice win, I think we all needed it. We were the better team this series, it's too bad the results didn't reflect that. Completely agree, a Tigers sweep would be huge especially if the Sox can take care of business Vs the Indians. If the Sox lay an egg against the Indians and the Tigers sweep the Twins, the Sox are still right there in the Wild Card race. If the Sox sweep the Indians to go along with a Tigers sweep of the Twins, the Sox are looking at a 3 game (in the L column) buffer on a playoff spot. There's way more upside to a Tiger sweep than to a Twins sweep.

Will the real Chicago White Sox please standup?

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 01:35 PM) Uhhh... So instead of doing something logical like posting a 2 month span of OPS, I have to find just one week. Damn, I guess my thinking is just stupid I don't have the time, nor the care, to find a 1 week time period. I found a 2 month time period, and I think that should be plenty suitable, but if not, you win. I think I'm just done with all this silliness, I never thought the White Sox fanbase was this dense but appaearantly I was mistaken. Time to hit the gym for the next 4 hours.
-
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 01:32 PM) LOL That is a one week portion? ok, now find me a one week portion of ARod's career where it was worse than any one week portion of BAs career. Thank you. I could have swore I wrote 1 week. Right? Let's just be consistent here. Not but a week ago Alex Rodriguez went 2-27 w/ 14 K, that's pretty atrocious if you ask me. And to add to this Anderson over that same stretch went 7-19 (.368 BA) with only 2 Ks.

QUOTE(S720 @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 01:25 PM) Rock, I have nothing against Anderson, but to see people stating his value equivalent to Garland is just so absurd. Garland has been one of the best pitchers after the Allstar break. I am done with this thread. Go ahead and drink the Anderson Kool-Aid! Dear god no one ever said that? Do you have a reading disability I should know about?
-
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 01:20 PM) ARod was NINE-FREAKING-TEEN YEARS OLD! Plus he only had 48 games. Brian Anderson is 23 years old and has at least double the at bats and games played than ARod did in 1995. Take a loook at all of ARod's full seasons and get back to me. OH BOY! 2 games in a week. WOOHOO! I really can't believe this is an argument or that you are really even comparing these players. You helped prove my point. Thank you. These players shouldn't be compared. You said Arod and Pujols have struggled less in their careers combined than Anderson has this year, I showed you basically that Rodriguez had a very similar year in his first full season, why must you people get all defensive? It's about proving a point incorrect, not comparing the 2 players for thier talents or abilities.

QUOTE(S720 @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 01:17 PM) I've seen so many times that he could not get the runners in. I even remembered one game when a man on third with one out, and he could not even lift a flyball so that the runner can score. You know what he did? Nothing, whiff! Strike out! Ok, I've seen basically every hitter in the Sox lineup do that multiple times over the past 2 weeks. And I never said they were equivalent in their effect on the team's success during their hot streaks, I'm saying Garland was terrible for 2 months and Anderson was terrible for 2 months they've now been pretty damn good for the past 3 months, considering the expectations placed on them. An .800 OPS from Anderson over a 3 month timespan is pretty great considering what's expected of him, Aaron Rowand didn't get anywhere near that last year. QUOTE(S720 @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 01:22 PM) If I can live again, again and again, I would take Arod over Brian Anderson again, again, and again until eternity... Your statement is so absurd! When did I say I'd take Anderson over Rodriguez? When did I even imply that? Damn, you're dense.
-
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 01:11 PM) I will give you ARod, but I am not so sure about Pujols. Plus I don't think comparing BA to two the best offensive players in baseball is a good thing. From the looks of it BA has had more bad weeks in one year than Arod and Pujols have had in their combined careers. Yeah the .672 OPS ARod put up in '95 was pretty f***ing awesome. ROOKIES STRUGGLE FOR THE FIRST FEW MONTHS OF THEIR PRO CAREERS HOLY s***! And take a look at what pujols did last week, he had a s*** couple of games most players tend to do this, especially when they're not used consistantly.
-
Who knows what could have been had Anderson not been benched imediately following his excellent offensive game on the road in Detroit.
-
QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 01:03 PM) I don't mind anything Ozzie said about Anderson because he has had a very dissappointing season, and before the cheerleaders can put down their pom poms and rush to the computer, two decent months do not a season make. I don't understand why Anderson has a Hall of Fame wing here at soxtalk. Anderson = Garland for 2006 They both had 2 horrendous months which fried thier stats for the season yet have picked it up substantially over the past 3 months improving thier season stats but not to the point where it's going to look anywhere near excellent when the season ends. Garland turned his season around on June 13, Anderson; June 11th. Perhaps if people ditched the lame ass "hall of fame" and "man crush" s*** and actually paid attention to the play on the field there wouldn't be the same f***ing arguments in 5 threads right now.
-
QUOTE(S720 @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 12:54 PM) If you are a good hitter, regardless of who is infront of you, you will still be good. Face it. Brian Anderson so far STINKS this year. This is you showing how little you know about baseball. Have fun with that.
-
QUOTE(Heads22 @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 12:38 PM) You people act as if he' s Cy f***ing Young or something. Brandon McCarthy sucked last year just check the numbers but if you're going to do that you'll probably want to ignore the fact that his ERA for the '05 season was lower than all five of the White Sox starters in 2006.
-
QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:58 AM) What purpose does this serve telling this to the media? Ozzie always has said that a player will never hear something for the 1st time through the media, so obviously Anderson knows how Ozzie feels. So if Anderson knows that, than what is the point of telling the media and all of us? He's obviously trying to light a fire under Anderson's ass so he'll actually start to produce at the dish. DUH!
-
QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 11:40 AM) I think a lot more is being made of this as well... They want Anderson to keep getting his ABs after only getting 306 so far this year. The only way a young hitter develops and starts to adjust to his defecencies is to keep getting to the plate and learn to recognize situations and pitches. As for the power vs speed stuff, I think it is pretty clear Ozzie is looking at a Pods-less future and thinking that we need to get more SBs from somewhere. I think he also is saying the obvious, that we get plenty of power in this line up, and it would be more beneficial to the team to have BA causing problems on the basepaths vs trying to hit homers. The Sox really believe in winterball for the development of their players, and it isn't a big surprise that they are pushing Anderson to go that route. You know, if Ozzie really wanted Anderson to get some extra ABs he could always just play him everyday and instead of imediately pinch hitting for him in the 7th inning or later perhaps he could let the kid get some experience hitting in close and late situations. I also agree that BA should go play in Venezuala this offseason with the rest of the Sox youngsters but there's just something so hypocritical about Ozzie's comments that bother me. And the Winter ball/speed/power s*** isn't even what bothered me about this, Fathom hit it right on the head in his post before mine.

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 01:50 AM) This team makes me want to stab myself in the eye. So if that's fun, then yes. You've changed man, you've changed.

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Sep 6, 2006 -> 12:30 AM) I dunno, to try and F***ING WIN THIS YEAR? Pretty much cut and dry to me. They were/are very productive players for winning teams. I would say 20-20 players too, but Crawford hasn't quite gotten there. So I'll say all were/are also .800/20 players are some point in their careers, perhaps better than that even. Yes you are correct with the 20/20, every player that I listed had multiple 20/20 or close (18/32) seasons and in the case of Crawford and Reyes they may not have reached that level yet but will very soon and should continue that for a good portion of their careers. But remember you have to choose one over the other, you can not be both a speed and power player.
