10/02/09 1:29 AM ET Marlins Minor Leaguer shot in Puerto Rico Wounded in drive-by attack while driving through hometown By John Schlegel / MLB.com Osvaldo Martinez, the 21-year-old Marlins Minor Leaguer who was shot several times in a drive-by attack in Puerto Rico on Wednesday, was the innocent victim of gangsters battling for control of drug distribution in public housing projects, according to The Associated Press. Police spokeswoman Maria Rivera told the AP that Martinez was driving through his hometown of Carolina, just east of the capital city of San Juan, when he was shot three times because it "seems that [gunmen] confused him with another person." There have been no arrests. According to the report, Martinez was recovering from surgery and in stable condition. Emergency room physician Dr. Benjamin Rodriguez said his "wounds did not have complications and they did not injure organs." The Marlins released a statement Wednesday night about the news: "The Florida Marlins are aware of a shooting incident involving Minor Leaguer Osvaldo Martinez in Puerto Rico this morning. At this time, we are trying to get more information. The entire organization's thoughts and prayers are with Osvaldo and his family." Signed as an 11th-round pick in 2006, Martinez played in 130 games for the Class A Jupiter Hammerheads of the Florida State League, batting .254 with 54 runs scored, 45 RBIs and 16 steals. In Puerto Rico, Martinez played for the Criollos of Caguas and recently began playing with the Arecibo Wolves. Got to say he is tough to be shot 3 times and make it!

Per Rotoworld Jesse Sanchez of MLB.com reports that Osvaldo Martinez will be sent to the White Sox along with a minor league pitcher in exchange for manager Ozzie Guillen. Martinez, 23, was an 11th round selection in the 2006 MLB Amateur Draft. Known more for his defense than offense, he batted just .245/.296/.322 with three home runs and 26 RBI in 371 plate appearances this season at Triple-A New Orleans. He can't really be considered a prospect. The trade is expected to go final on Wednesday. Per Florida top 10 2011 ML prospect ranking #7 Osvaldo Martinez, SS, Grade C+: A good year, I can see him as a steady contributor, don't be deceived by small sample size success in the majors. He's more of a .250-.270 hitter with a fair OBP. I really thought Sox could of done better than this IMO, but then again it is KW at the helm.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 08:20 AM) Lol@Ozzie deserving a statue. Is there a Phil Jackson statue at the UC? Is there a Mike Ditka statue at SF? GMAB. Or a Greg Walker statue.............oh wait..........never mind.

"The Florida Marlins believe I am the right man for the job to bring another World Series to South Florida. And just as it has always been with me, winning is my only mission,'' Guillen wrote. "It's good being wanted and more importantly it's good knowing where you stand. Although it's sad my time with the White Sox has ended, I can't tell you how thrilled I am to be a part of the Marlins organization. I have an unbelievable amount of respect for the Marlins, owner Jeffrey Loria, president Larry Beinfest and general manager Michael Hill. I can't thank them enough for this opportunity and look forward to the future. I can't wait to get started. This was taken down shortly after being posted! OG Florida ass kissing bulls*** underway.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 27, 2011 -> 12:00 AM) My point is ... there will be no rants in Florida. He's passionate about the White Sox because he loves the White Sox and grew up a Sox player. He was the face of the franchise the last several years and bleeds White Sox black. There's no reason for him to go off in Florida. He'll be liked by the media but nobody gives a f*** about baseball down there. We won't hear anything from Ozzie Guillen down there. If they win it all, we'll see him in the postseason, but he ain't going to be going off about anything down there. Baseball is dead in Florida. Unless of course the new stadium means sellouts every night and baseball frenzy. I don't think anybody expects that. He bleeds green only.

QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 11:34 PM) Hawk made a great point about how much of a distraction Ozzie making his desire to have his contract extension during a 5 game win streak for the Sox might have been. Hawk talks now but sat in the booth all year kissing OG ass all year!

QUOTE (justBLAZE @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 11:26 PM) Sources confirm Cora will join Oz in Miami. XMAS morning has come early................I bet he does not want Walker's worthless ass.
-
QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 11:19 PM) So if it's already decided that Cooper is coming back, the Sox probably already know who their next manager is. That means Tony is out............I pray it is not Cora.

QUOTE (winninguglyin83 @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 11:06 PM) Among many things Konerko said: This regime had run its course. You will hear alot more from guys now Guillen is gone alot of guys were tired of his act, but could not rock the boat with OG still here.

QUOTE (JPN366 @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 10:59 PM) Phil Rogers just said that Walker has been successful as a hitting coach. That would have me stop reading the article right there.

Thanks for the Title beyond that it was all self promotion for your next job in FLA!

QUOTE (chiguy79 @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 10:38 PM) Ozzie orchestrated this from the beginning and got what he wanted, enough said. JR has got to have a lot of unhappy investors and losing a lot of money this year, Ozzie knew barking for more money would get him a release so he can go to FL where he wants to be. Guillen was loyal to Guillen ..............his White Sox loyalty talk was such nonsense.

QUOTE (VictoryMC98 @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 10:34 PM) Signing Dunn, Trading for RIos, failing to have a closer, Failing to have a MLB hitting 2b. Enough is enough and it is time for a change!

QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 10:16 PM) Smartest move the Marlins ever made. Sox are close to being irrelevant in this town of Chicago, losing a headline stealer like Ozzie. If you think that's not important in this Cubbie-town I believe u are mistaken. KW better make some significant changes cause the manager wasn't the problem with this poorly built team. Ozzie's better off in Florida. I hope the Sox make significant player changes for the Buddy Bell era. It's no fun being on the downslide. The Royals are coming and we are sliding personnel-wise. Good luck, Ozzie. You are the best manager in Sox history. Good luck, Ozzie successor. This season sucked and we fans want to have something to cheer about during the season as well as the postseason. KW won't make the same mistake again. He'll hire a Williams puppet. Hope he picks a good man. I wanna win. From the espn.com story "Only Jimmy Dykes and Al Lopez have won more games as White Sox manager than Guillen, who led the club to the World Series title in 2005. Now in his eighth year at the helm, Guillen said he never expected to ride the coattails of that championship forever."
-
QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 10:11 PM) I'm sure the trade was already agreed upon. If not, the Marlins would now hold all the cards since the Sox released Guillen. Then why not do the deal now.............Sox can have OG sit on his ass Florida needs OG to open the new ballpark. Florida holds nothing but air without OG and who is going to take a lame duck 1 year job.
-
QUOTE (The Ginger Kid @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 10:09 PM) Glad it's over but sorry to see him go. Unlike most around here, I don't hate the guy. But it's time for change. Too bad Williams is staying. Jerry's a joke. KW should also be doing his last presser with OG I agree.
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 10:01 PM) He's been released of his contract but the Sox retain right for compensation should he find a managerial job elsewhere. So basically he's being traded. Hopefully that means Sox will get what they want from Florida once season ends.............Sox just raised the price of poker and I like it.

QUOTE (flavum @ Sep 26, 2011 -> 10:03 PM) Mitch Williams just said some Cubs fans would flip to White Sox fans if the Sox hired Ryne Sandberg. GMAFB. Nobody wants Sandberg Mitch get over it.
