  1. QUOTE(iamshack @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 10:44 AM) Bruce Levine reported the exact same thing. As for Dontrelle, what the hell sort of logic is it to say that because Mike Lowell hits well in Boston, Dontrelle will pitch well again? That's nonsensical. Saying that Dontrelle who had a bad season is done as a pitcher is nonsensical as well. Do you realize that young left handed pitchers who have had success in the NL might attract an offer or 2.
  2. QUOTE(buckweaver @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 10:31 AM) Thanks for posting this. For being two years removed from a World Championship, the overall tone on this site is so anti-organization it makes it hard to read. Perhaps it's simply all the negativity that comes out when people write, but you'd think by regularly reading Soxtalk that everyone in the Sox organization (especially Kenny Williams) is a numbnut and that a team of Joes from Bridgeport could certainly do a heck of a lot better job. The reality is that Kenny Williams is a smart guy and is willing to take a risk and Jerry Reinsdorf is a terrific owner who will spend wisely. I'd choose Kenny over most other general managers/Jerry over most other owners and give him the benefit of the duubt more often than most people on this site. It's absolutely everyone's right to post whatever they wish, but I question a lot of the venom, particularly when couched in terms of "What the hell...these guys don't know squat..." kind of writing. While Soxtalk is usually first with breaking Sox news, it's generally depressing to read because of the abundance of Chickens Little posting around here. Thanks for the laugh Kenny. Now get back into the meetings and get to work.
  3. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 10:25 AM) What can you get for Konerko in return? How about Dye? Can you get the same type of player back as you would in the 2nd or 3rd round of a MLB draft? If so, then maybe that is something the White Sox will look into if they really aren't competing come the trade deadline. Just a suggestion. They have time to see if this will work or if they indeed have to blow this whole thing up. I do think he would be really stupid to have a 5 million dollar/year setup man on a non-contending team though. I think Konerko can get a return from the Angels or the Diamonbacks. But probably you can get the best value is now not as a mid season pickup. I dont see Dye having too much value unless he proves he rebounds. And that 5 million dollar setup guy has a full NTC. How dumb is that.
  4. QUOTE(juddling @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 10:22 AM) Just heard Joe Cowley on the Score talking about the Cabrera trade and he gave Kenny a bit of credit. Joe said the Sox had the best 4 person package for Cabrera on the table but the Marlins came back tried to throw Dontrelle Willis in the package and would take another couple of prospects for him. Ozzie told KW that Willis is only throwing 85 mph and not 95 like he should be and there is something wrong with him....he didn't want Willis. Kenny went back to the Marlins but the Marlins said that Willis was to be part of the package or no deal. Kenny decided not to give up prospects for a pitcher who was hurt or lost whatever he had. OK Soxtalk....discuss Well a few years ago, the Marlins couldn't find a guy to pick up Lowell and his contract to aquire this Beckett fellow. The redsox decided to take a gamble. He rebounded pretty well. Plus if they really didnt want Willis, Kenny could of turned around and spun him for something else. He is left handed, young so teams will be interested. Joe Cowley spins what the sox give him to spin. All I know is facing that lineup 19 times a year will be destructive. .
  5. QUOTE(Frankensteiner @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 10:16 AM) The Yankees and Red Sox went through a bad period like the Tigers? I said the Red Sox and the Yankees stockpiled draft picks and made good decisions even thought they never went through a set of losing seasons aka a bad period.
  6. QUOTE(daa84 @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 10:05 AM) good point...id would certainly suck if we kept going for slot (though at the 8th pick slot still isnt bad)....at this point though since we already have linebrink, rowand only costs us a 3rd round pick which will probably be inconsequential Well I am so glad that the franchise decided to play the likes of Pods and Erstad trying to win meaningless games in September that killed our draft. The minute september 1st showed up, they should of told every vet hey we are going to see what we have. 3 less wins and we are right in the middle of the Alvarez sweepstakes. We should be attempting to gain as many draft picks as possible. This is how good teams like the Redsox and the Yanks have rebuilt their system. They never went through that bad period like the Tigers that allowed for the low draft picks. They made some good decisions, and amassed draft picks. The currency today is prospects. We need a complete replenishing over the next 3 years to have enough chips to compete.
  7. QUOTE(daa84 @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 09:58 AM) first of all we havent signed him yet.... second its not always the quantity of picks, as it is the quality...the fact that we dont have a second and third pick might make us go for the top talent....detroit only had maybin and miller (and porcello) because of signability reasons and they fell to 10, 6, and 27 respectively....as long as KW makes up for it by getting the best available player in the first round, and then goes after a potential signability guy (like the cubs did with samardjza a couple years ago) in the 4th or so id be fine with it.... ideally we would draft like i said above and then have a 2nd and 3rd pick as well, but if we save the money from the second and third round picks signing bonus, to get a player who may fall due to signability reasons (say a pedro alvaraz or a justin smoak) id be fine with it I agree with your assessment. In a perfect world, the team takes the money they would of used on a 2nd and 3rd round draft and use it to pay overslot. But I dont see the sox going over slot. Our owner has too good of a relationship with Selig to bypass the slot allocation. Porcello fell into our laps last year, and we passed due to financials. I dont have enough faith in Williams and the sox scouts that they will draft the best available talent. What if that talent is represented by Boras. I think they will get someone decent, but somewhat of an overdraft. I believe that Danks is Kenny's target.
  8. Another type A free agent. So we get a first round draft pick, then we start off at the 4th round. Thats what smart teams do, they limit their draft picks to restock the talent pool in their minor leagues. The same type of talent, that teams have been using to acquire talent. Rowand on this team is nice, and by himself sure. We just signed a type A free agent setup guy. So once again, we wont be replenishing the worst minor league system in baseball this up coming year. We wont pay overslot. So we will get Jordan Danks the grindermaster in the overdraft because he is cheap. 55 million dollars for Rowand. Wait till he hits .270 and cant hit the slider again. I am glad we are just blowing our load because of perception. Just blow this thing up and start over. Rowand isnt a difference maker and we are not competing against the Tigers and Indians this year. Unf***ingbelievable.
  9. QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 01:09 AM) Going for it or not, signing Linebrink was not a good move. If they are going for it, that $5M would have been better used to bring in an impact position player like Jones or Fukudome. If they aren't going for it, signing a declining middle reliever to a contract with a NTC and losing a pick is not a good plan. Quentin seems like a reasonable acquisition either way. Well its not like the sox are going to go overslot at the 8th pick because they are saving money on not having a 2nd pick.
  10. QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Dec 5, 2007 -> 12:41 AM) I agree that he hasn't done terribly this winter, but too much damage has been done (or not been done) with the farm system and it's all taking a huge toll right now. Also, if you agree that the team couldn't be improved enough to compete in 2008, I can't see how you can view the Garland trade in a positive light. Kenny squandered away our biggest trading chip for another old player who doesn't figure to be part of the next time the White Sox raise any flags. He even said that he had offers with prospects on the table and that he turned them down. In a vacuum one year of Cabrera is a fine haul for one year of Garland, but you can't look at it so narrowly. The Sox would've been so much better served this winter getting younger, but that decision was made back in July when Dye and to a lesser extent Buehrle were kept. Well the writing was on the wall for the "we are going for it crap". Think about the end of last season. Instead of checking out Bourgeois and playing some more kids. We decided to play Erstad and Pods, whom by the way are both out of our system. They should of benched them the minute the rosters expanded. Now allowing those guys to start to hit and contribute probably contributed to 3 more wins, which of course as Chicago tradition blew our draft position. The number 3 pick might of netted us a superstar. Now the number 8 pick will most likely give KW the wiggle room to explain why Jordan Danks, the ball player and grinder, not superstar is a better fit for the sox. The 2nd half of the season was handled foolishly. The sox had chance to reload but decided that 07 was an aberration.
  11. QUOTE(3 BeWareTheNewSox 5 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 11:54 PM) http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/wh...120407a.article . The Levine version said he was mad Levine made it sound like Dye called up upset.
  12. QUOTE(greg775 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 11:32 PM) Our team is snakebit. If we trade Crede, Josh will turn out to be a sieve at third base. If we keep Crede and trade Josh, Josh will turn into a 40 homer guy every year. That said ... why not keep Crede? p.s. Rowand is going to help the Royals big time. Because his agent is boras and he wants to go to FA. He will not next us anything in draft picks when he leaves.
  13. QUOTE(hitlesswonder @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 11:30 PM) I'm not mad at Dye. I'm just saying a smart GM would take advantage of the situation, get Dye to waive his NTC, and do what they should have done and deal off veteran players. He had the perfect opportunity from a upset whitesox fanbase to make those moves around the trading deadline. However he decided that 07 was an abberation. He will keep drudging along, until its too late. Then spin off whatever for D level prospects.
  14. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 10:57 PM) In an ideal world the Sox could get both plus Figgins (that is if the Angels are depserate). I don't think they are, but that isn't to say the White Sox can't try to offer up other things to get the Angels to deal Figgins (I don't know if they would though). However, I agree with you, Kochman and a pitching prospect (Adenhart) would be a nice starting point. Now the question is, will Williams and Jerry have the stones to move out a popular player like Konerko. With missing out on all of the plan As. Moving a popular player like Konerko might scare them. I would love to see Konerko moved to Arizona or the Angels for something cheaper. But I dont see it happening.
  15. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 10:53 PM) Maybe we can get it back near the range where we won the WS. I really dont care, ive been through it before. Its exactly whats going to happen if we rebuild, which most of us want. The AL Central wasnt a power division like it is now. If we drop back into the 70s in payroll, we will need draft and development to get this team back. We dont do either of those well.
  16. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 10:47 PM) Thats what im saying. It would benefit us all. I like being able to move up. I enjoyed it in 05 actually. Enjoy the 5th place finishes, and the 65-75 million dollar payroll if attendance takes a dump for a few years.
  17. The cubs will get Fukodome, and the Indians will get bay. Someone else will get Jones and Rowand. We will get Burke/Crisp or Owens as our CF.
  18. QUOTE(BearSox @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 09:06 PM) this coming directly from Kenny Williams, he is looking for players that won't K a ton and put up a good OBP. Hall provides neither of that. However, I highly doubt the Brew Crew would be stupid enough to do a Hall for Crede trade. Someone must of hid the stat sheet when he was pursuing Torii.
  19. I wonder what Dye said to him. WTF did I sign the extension for if you are going to continue to get punked by other GMs. Maybe Kenny should stop inviting the players to be part of the GM process. He asks Konerko and Dye for their input on player changes, and now this. Under the radar must be like parking the bus in front of the hotel and using bullhorns to get his message across.
  20. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:44 PM) Compete now? Thats prob the funniest thing ive ever heard. There was never a hope of us competing this year. Our only hope is to build on this young core and hopefully add a couple of impact players. But to expand on your point. Would this team be better next year WITH Danks, Fields, Possibly Gio and Floyd, and signing Andruw Jones in CF or Just Miguel Cabrera and 2 or 3 major holes in the rotation, and no 3B? (given the crede trade) Rock you and I know that Kenny is "going for it now." If he really wanted to rebuild, Dye would of been traded late last season. Kong would be gone sometime this week for a package. And we would be fielding offers for some of the older players on the team for major league ready guys ala the Twins. We are not building around a young core right now. We are adding a few young players to an old core.
  21. QUOTE(Leonard Zelig @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:41 PM) Are you guys who are bashing KW over this really upset because you thought we were getting MC all along, or just because you got your hopes up after the report that the "halls were buzzing" over a Sox deal? Because our system sucks and we can field offers for one of the best hitters who happens to be 24 years old. Dont worry wait till you see him live and in person for 19 games a season. I am sure he will be handled by our rotation and stud pen.
  22. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:39 PM) And somehow we get involved and detroit has to give up 4 more players........hmmmmm That helps us how. We are built if you wish to use that term to compete now. With all of the post 30ish players on this team. Its now or never. Kenny burnt the farm already to get to this point. Having the Tigers burn theres is going to make for some company down the road when Minny reloads. We are between two points and we will wind up with another medicore to s*** season.
  23. QUOTE(fathom @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:37 PM) Good thing we keep going cheap in the draft, and the Tigers keep overpaying for top talent. At least JR and Bud will stay friends. Wait till they either have Porcello in their rotation or trade him for some impact player 2 years from now. If we draft Danks brother in 08 its time for Kenny to f***ing go.
  24. QUOTE(gar102 @ Dec 4, 2007 -> 05:32 PM) I think Kenny got schooled again and another team came in at the last moment and stole his player. Didnt help that Ozzie kept saying how miggy was getting in shape How many times have we seen that the sox are on the verge of something, only to have someone swoop in last minute to raid the goods. Kenny should just shut the f*** up, and keep under the radar like the talks about. Between him and Guillen running their mouths everyone knows the plan.
