Jon Garland traded for Orlando Cabrera
southsideirish71 replied to Steve9347's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(buckweaver @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 11:52 AM) whitesox.com story says: "By moving Garland, the White Sox took $12 million off the books for 2008, while also seemingly opening a rotation spot for both John Danks and Gavin Floyd -- assuming general manager Ken Williams does not add another veteran arm to the rotation." $12M is a lot...this is the Carlos Lee trade, and Jon Garland is no Carlos Lee talent-wise, imho. Of course, Carlos was a clubhouse tool...but didn't it seem as though Garland never quite enjoyed his time here anyway? Remember the "Judy Garland" references. Plus, all said and done, we just got a .300 hitting gold glove shortstop for Matt Friggin' Karchner. So lighten up, fellas. Give Kenny some slack. It's NOVEMBER 19, not MARCH 19. Very few people are lamenting the loss of Garland. It just what we perceive the haul should be. Cabrera is a good player. But this says KW believes the 90 loss team was smoke and mirrors and we are closer to the 05 team than the 07 team. -

Cabrera will help the lineup, and will help the teams D. Getting him is great. The only question is, with limited trading chips we were hoping for a better return maybe something similar to the Houston get last year. -

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 11:23 AM) Well, I've long believed and stated that something's got to be wrong with Garland, what with his "knot' nonsense but if KW did this trade just because he thinks he's hurt, he deserves to be fired and there'd be serious consequences from the League, if they could prove it. It's just not something you do, however much everyone here wants to justify it as "they should watch out for themselves!" No. That's not what MLB says and that's not what the GMs themselves believe. Sorry to tell you, but most GMs don't like to deal with people who are just out to f*** everyone or DO f*** people with injured players. Thanks for the laugh. -

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 11:18 AM) Both fanbases are hoping to god something else is in the works. Well their fanbase at least knows that they have the "prospects" to get something else. We pretty much have nothing. -

QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 11:14 AM) Or if we KNOW he's hurt -- which I doubt, at this moment -- we don't trade him unless we've explicitly told them, "We're concerned about his arm" because that's the way it's supposed to work amongst GMs. Anyway, I don't want to spend the morning arguing about GM ethics. CABRERAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Or we could figure that GMs with medical staffs and state of the art technology could check it out. If you buy a used car, you have a mechanic check it out. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 11:11 AM) So...given the state of our system, I think i'll be the first to ask this...what do folks think it will take to resign OC? Thank god we signed our 5 million dollar utility guy now, or 2nd baseman. -

QUOTE(WCSox @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 11:00 AM) Whaaaa? Cabrera is pretty decent, but since when is that ALL you can get for a veteran middle-of-the-rotation pitcher??? Geez, if they wanted to dump Garland's salary, at least wait until June or July, when you could force a bidding war. The only possible rational I can see is that there is something wrong with Jon's shoulder that we don't know about. Other than that, this is really bad. Ask Colorado on the haul they got for Jason Jennings in the same situation. We get a 33 year old SS. We are the Chicago Giants. -

Did Antrhax fan take over Kenny at gun point. WTF -
I find it ironic that Mexico cries foul when we talk about border security, legal immigration, and our social policies. Yet if I was an illegal in Mexico, I couldn't get a drivers license, couldn't own land, couldn't vote, and most likely would be in jail.

He should of been up in September. But we really needed to get Erstad more ABs, and Podsednik more ABs. Remember everyone, the Mexican winter league is probably the worst out of the group. He should dominate that league.

QUOTE(beck72 @ Nov 19, 2007 -> 09:25 AM) Did Pierre like ruin your life or something? Like I said, Pierre at an avg, of $9 mill a yr for the next 4 yrs is horrible. But if it's close to $5 mill, not so much. I'd love to hear a few of your suggestions about finding the right position players for the sox, given the market and names that possibly could be available. One way or another, the sox are going to need guys at the top of the order. Owens might never better his 2007 numbers [which were elevated due to a hot Sept.]. Ideally, the sox could use Owens near the bottom of the order. If the sox think Owens can improve on his 2007, finding the right platoon partner who can hit LHP might be the move to make. Take a flier on Reed Johnson of Tor. who might be non-tendered or traded. Re-unite him with college pal Rowand. 4 more years, good lord. You realize that speed guys past 30 don't pan out that well.

Here comes our 4th quarter defense aka the card board cutouts,

Missing tackles, or trying the superman tackle technique is sexy. Why tackle a guy, you have others to help you out.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 18, 2007 -> 05:20 PM) How many college coaches are better offensive play callers than Ron Turner? Where the f*** has Wolfe been all season? Why not use him out of the backfield, as a receiver, do f***ing something Ron. You are the least creative coordinator I have seen this side of Shoop. Where is Haas. Rasheed is out on the field. Give the kid a down or 2. He at least can catch a ball.

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Nov 18, 2007 -> 05:18 PM) f*** you Ron Turner!!!!!!!! How the f*** has this moron not been canned yet? f***ING BRUTAL! Turner = Shoop

Who is more pathetic our offensive line, or our secondary. 4th and 1 and Seattle, we run a counter which takes forever to develop and our line gets bent over deliverance style.

2007 Post ASB White Sox Catch-All Thread
southsideirish71 replied to Chisoxfn's topic in Pale Hose Talk
Hopefully the sox have Josh taking as many ground balls as he can. They should invest in a trainer that can work with Josh in the offseason, and hit as many ground balls as you can. Work on drills such as coming in on the ball. I think with more and more ground balls and practice Josh can become a halfway decent 3rd Baseman. -
I am obviously one of the biggest Bobby Jenks fans on the site. He has a great season for a closer, but closers shouldnt get the Cy Young They have their own award already.

QUOTE(greg775 @ Nov 17, 2007 -> 12:55 AM) Just what I was thinking. Stupid to trade him now. Who will gamble on the back? I think we need to make room for Fields and Crede and deal Paulie or Thome just because we actually can steal some real players for Paulie or Thome, not prospects. Greg, You realize that Crede's agent is Boras. The same Boras who has already rejected the idea of negotiating because he wants to go to FA. Thome is a hard move, because only a few teams could use him, he is older and is expensive. Paulie could move, but the idea that you are moving either to make room for Crede who wont be here because of his agent and his back. Moving Crede is a non issue, he has to go.

QUOTE(wilmot825 @ Nov 16, 2007 -> 11:13 PM) The 2008 Batting Order and Line-up....odds of this happening? 2B- Marcus Giles LF- Miguel Cabrera DH- Jim Thome 1B- Paul Konerko RF- Jermaine Dye CF- Torii Hunter 3B- Josh Fields C- A.J. Pierzynski SS- Juan Uribe We are not going with 6 years and 90 for Hunter. So scratch him off the list. Cabrera would require luck, and if he was here Fields wouldnt be. How much money do you think we have.

QUOTE(dwalteroo @ Nov 16, 2007 -> 03:04 PM) I'd take either Loretta or Gooch, but if we stick with Richar I think we're making a mistake. I would platoon a Loretta with Richar. However the "if we stick with Richar" we are making a mistake. What mistake. You realize to be a decent franchise you need to mix in some young cheap talent with your older expensive guys. This team is old, and we need to get some youth on this team. If we can rotate a guy in, see if he can work out then its good. If we keep on the old man track, in a few years this team is going to be the San Francisco Giants.

QUOTE(IowaSoxFan @ Nov 16, 2007 -> 02:55 PM) Once we get our CF be it Hunter, Fukodome, Jones, or whatever the next rumor is, I wouldn't mind signing Lofton to play left for next year. He is still very solid offensively and would give us a lead off man. Defensively he has slipped so he shouldnt be an option in CF anymore. Theres always the possibilty that a trade for Furcal and Pierre (not preferable) gets made as well as soon as the Dodgers sign Rowand. You want to trade for Pierre, why exactly. He makes lots of money, and is a bad bad baseball player. So bad in fact, that one year after he signed a deal with the Dodgers, they are looking to sign another CF to replace him. I would rather have Owens out in CF than that.
