White Sox vs. Red Sox 7/23 Game Thread

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 23, 2005 -> 09:35 PM) Would you like to be higher in ba, obp, and ops and lower in runs scored?? You claim because of a low ba, obp and ops that the offense is inconsistant but that's not true. We scored a s***load of runs last year. Maybe they werent inconsistant either. -

I forget our offense is fine. The lucky Redsox snagged a bunch of frozen ropes, the strikeouts were bad calls by the ump, and the pop ups when men were on were just missed hangers that if Paulie didnt pass gas during his stroke would of landed on the Dan Ryan. Luckily we done have to face quality starters in the playoffs. All our offense needs to do is score a single run on a few hits and our super dooper oobber pitching will shut down any offense. Because all of the other teams pitching stinks and the whitesox are the best. -

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 23, 2005 -> 09:20 PM) Good post. Here's the thing, everyone here seems to expect an explosion every now and then from our offense but there are people claiming our O is inconsistant. In other words I'm saying that the same people who are calling our offense inconsistant would probably be doing the same for the Red Sox offense if they were fans of the Bosox. You are very correct that we don't have that 1(or 2 in the case of Boston) stud in the middle of the lineup like Boston or Anaheim. I actually would take stringing a few hits together. That would be a moral victory right now. Look at the Bosox lineup. 90% of their hitters would start over our guys if you compared their bats to ours. But hey we have 3 defensive specialists on our team. -

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 23, 2005 -> 09:13 PM) I guess the Red Sox are having the same problem then? They are at the tops in BA, OBP, OPS. They dont have the same problem as us. -

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Jul 23, 2005 -> 09:08 PM) Lying is bad With last nights offensive explosion we are now 1 point higher in team BA than last place Seattle. Its a moral victory for us. Yes we are the second worst team in the AL to Seattle in BA and OBP. Sorry for the mispeak. 13th looks so much better than 14th I guess. -

QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Jul 23, 2005 -> 09:02 PM) First off let me say here I'm not comparing the Bosox offense to our's I'm just trying to make the point about the consistancy of our offense: Here's an interesting stat, i just used 4 runs, cause usually when teams with good pitching score 4 runs they're going to win. Anyways the Red Sox have failed to score atleast 4 runs in 28 of their games this year, the White Sox 30, and the Red Sox are said to be the best offense in baseball, i guess if our O is that inconsistant so is their's Also, the Bosox have been shut out twice this year, our sox 3 times. We have the lowest BA in the AL. We have the lowest OBP in the AL. The only way we score is if we hit home runs right now. Our hitters have no discipline at all. After working counts, fouling off pitches the next batter Uribe swings at the first pitch near the plate and grounds out. That is a microcosm on why our offense sucks right now. If we bang homers we look like world beaters. If the opposing pitcher can spot the fastball on the outside corner its over. BTW our offense lately is officially the same as last year. We score a lot of runs one night, then get 4 hit the next night. -

AJ is now a pull monkey home run hitter like the rest of our lineup. It only took walker half a year to destroy a career of being an all fields hitter. Gooch was doing well until late May. Methinks that Greg either hired a translator or he got an english to japanese dictionary. Like all of our hitters his average is plummetting. -

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 23, 2005 -> 08:29 PM) 2000 playoffs. Maggs, Lee, Frank, and Konerko combined 3-40. Frank and Konerko combined 0-18. If KW resigns Konerko for any amount of money I would be upset. He is a rally killer and is a one dimensional pull monkey. Lyle Overbay would be something to consider. The sad thing is we have our big three to shut down the other teams. All they need is anyone who can spot a fastball on the outside corner. -

Paulie popping up and Everett striking out with men on was a huge flashback to our 3-4-5 hitters against Seattle in 2000. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 23, 2005 -> 08:19 PM) JimH...we don't agree on much, but your 2nd paragraph is exactly the way I feel about Uribe vs Vizquel. I'm so sick of guys just giving away outs with terrible approaches at the plate. This is why Uribe is batting in the .230's. Even Bruuce Levine is talking about our bad pitch selection and we dont get on base. Maybe this will finally sink in with everyone. Our offense isnt very good. AJ Burnett would be nice and all. But we need Bats. Vizquell should be somone to target. Our pitching will not be the reason we falter. It will be our bats, just like in 2000. -

QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 23, 2005 -> 08:18 PM) Two things really stood out to me, Uribe's terrible at bats and Marte's frustrating inconsistency. Of course, there were more problems but those two just happened to stick out. People need to put this into their memory banks when we talk trade. During the AJ trade talks Martes name has been included and everyone went nuts saying we cant get rid of Marte. Marte is inconsistant, he has a hard time getting out lefties, and he gives up gopher balls in crucial situations. I bet he is gone. -

BTW I have one question. Ross Gload just was 3-3 against Schilling two weeks ago in a rehab start. He is a lefty bat. Why didnt he pinch hit at all. It doesnt make sense. -

Bill Melton also just said that with 2 men on in the 9th, Rowand was probably trying to hit a home run. They have had 2 meetings in the last month about pitch selection and working the counts. Nothing seems to be working. Uribe just reacts. -

QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jul 23, 2005 -> 08:11 PM) We couldn't beat Wade Miller in a low scoring game at the Cell. Our pitching is not going to be the problem. Its our offense. This is exactly what we had last year. Last night we bang out a bunch of homers and then tonight nothing. El Duque pitched his ass off. BTW this is why I wont cry if they include Marte in a trade. -

QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 23, 2005 -> 08:04 PM) With a name like yours, maybe you should. Before you do though, you may want to get those eyes checked, Miller had the great curveball working and changed speeds very well. I'm not one who likes giving credit to the opposing pitcher either, but it was pretty clear to me ... and to Ozzie, DJ, Harrelson, Rooney, Farmer ... some of whom are noted homers. Bill Melton just said that this team can only score runs right now via the long ball. They dont do the same things they did to start the season. He said outside of yesterday we havent been hitting good at all. That every team seems to 5 hit us. Its not just me making these comments. -

QUOTE(KevHead0881 @ Jul 22, 2005 -> 11:52 PM) Bobby f***in' Jenks! Did that guy look unhittable up there or what? I know he only faced 2 batters, but he looked impressive. Nothing like following up a 99 mph heater with a deadly hook. I'm starting to become a big fan. If he gets that hook over for a strike I dont see how they can hit him. 99mph heat and then a 12-6 hook. The minute the scouting report goes out that he is getting that over. Then he can elevate the fastball and be unhittable. THE BEAST The entire team played well tonight It was nice to see Hermy get some game time considering he hasnt been out there in a while Garland proved he is a stopper and legit. Nice running fastball tonight. -
QUOTE(Ozzie Montana @ Jul 22, 2005 -> 04:02 PM) Add the fact that he has never been given the chance as starting first baseman. Doesnt matter. Coming up to the big club and playing are two different things. We have a perfect example. We have Wakefield who owns Konerko. Kong has a 143 Ba against him. Perfect time to add another lefty to the mix and get a line drive bat, someone who wont go for the fences. Kong starts, Gload is on the bench.

QUOTE(Ozzie Montana @ Jul 22, 2005 -> 03:29 PM) What a pathetic lineup. Not Ozzie's fault since we got Dye and Thomas out for now. He is forced into a corner with this one. I only hope the top three are 4 for 4 or we got no chance. Pierznski 5? Crede 6!!? Id rather have Timo 5, Pierznski 6, Crede 7, Harris 8, Uribe 9. Uribe got no chance against the knuckleball. He'll get the golden sombrero today. Ozzie should put Ozuna at SS. Oh yeah , Gload should be playing But I'm still cheering. Go Jon. Konerko is batting a filthy 143 against Wakefield in his career. Willie Harris is 0-4 in his career. on the good note Arow and Everett PWN Wakefield big time.

QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Jul 22, 2005 -> 01:31 PM) why do you keep calling him Dingo? It must be a typo, the S and D are just so close to each other in the keyboard. So do you really think that Dingo is going to get through waivers and join the minors and get called up in September.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Jul 22, 2005 -> 01:28 PM) Seriously AJ needs to stop pulling everything. His power alley is in left center. Everyone says its not our hitting instructor that is telling them to pull the ball more. For me AJ is his most damning example. A career .288 hitter who is well known as being an all fields hitter. He comes to the sox, has a cup of Joe with Greg. They work on his swing a bit in spring training. Mid season we have great power numbers. Success But oddly a low BA for a good hitter. A guy who is well known as a good hitting catcher. But then again maybe its not Greg telling him to pull the ball like the rest of the team. Maybe its swamp gas.
-
QUOTE(qwerty @ Jul 22, 2005 -> 01:22 PM) What if he pulls the ball his first three at-bats? Ross is a line drive hitter. Unlike Paully Pull Baseball. Ross hits the ball to all fields. He hits like AJ used to before Greg worked on his swing with him. Maybe that is the reason they didnt want him up, he rejects our hitting instructors silly notions of being pull monkeys will low BA and low OBP. Ross

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Jul 22, 2005 -> 01:19 PM) That's yesterdays news. Everyone who wished so hard for Ross Gload to be up here got their wish. Frank is back on the DL, we have our backup 1B now. On to the next "crisis" Ross welcome back

Our problem is that we have too many defensive specialists on the team. Guys who have great gloves but offer nothing up at the dish. Player A vs Player B Player A .232 BA 11 homers 24 RBI's .270OBP .379SLG vs Player B .235BA 7 homers 43 RBI's .266OBP .367 SLG Player A is now the starting CF for the Iowa Cubs and Player B is the starting SS for the best team in baseball. Remember they sent Corey down because he couldnt get on and he couldnt hit and struck out a bunch of times. If he was on this team he would be exhaulted as a defensive wizard.

QUOTE(White Sox Josh @ Jul 22, 2005 -> 12:43 PM) Tadahito needs Shingo real badly right now. His average has dropped from about .330 to .269. He is hitting .136 in his last 7 games. He needs Shingo as a support system because I think that he is probably very lonely. His translator apparantly doesn't speak English very well and Iguchi often times used Shingo's translator. His BA has been dropping like a rock since May. I get it, it was the fact that Tad has ESP and knew that Dingo would be gone and started to feel heartbroken. We can hire a translator.
