  1. QUOTE(IowaSoxFan @ Mar 6, 2008 -> 06:40 PM) The point is though that this team is not in all likelihood going to compete for a playoff spot. They may stilll lose 90 games as the roster is composed right now so why not just do what Oakland is, find homes for your aging talent elsewhere and bring in some young players and prospects to try and fight another day. That means holding on to your current young talent,(IMO Danks, Fields, Ramirez, Quentin and Swisher) and bringing in pieces to support them. Use money that you save by sending out the veterans to sign amateur players and sign veteran players in free agency that fill the gaps to make your team competitive. Instead by staying the course and trying to play for today you just stay in a constant state of mediocrity. although i see your point and for the most part agree with you, your use of words like "likelihood", "may" and such suggest what kw probably thinks: yeah, perhaps on paper we don't stack up, but we didn't stack up in 2005 and looked what happened. now, i understand that's probably not real sound from a logical standpoint. a lot went right for us in 2005 and to expect that to ever happen again is unrealistic. but let's say contreras bounces back and danks and floyd improve. all of a sudden you have a pretty decent team, and other factors (injuries, players unexpectedly declining/emerging) start to play more of a role in figuring things out than how things looked in march. i'll grant you that i don't expect it. i'll probably pick us third in the division because i don't think we've done enough to surpass either cleveland or detroit. but i can promise kw isn't thinking that way and if and when there is a rebuilding, i highly doubt he is going to be around for it.
  2. QUOTE(scenario @ Mar 6, 2008 -> 06:38 PM) I know he's played a few games there (19 career games), but it's been awhile and I don't remember how he looked. Just thought it was interesting they'd have him start a game at SS, while Uribe has seen no action there this spring. i know. don't mind me. i've been possessed by smart-assery today for some reason. i think winter is finally getting to me.
  3. i would imagine pablo would look as yttihs at shortstop as he did in the past. although you never know, maybe the broken leg made him a better shortstop.
  4. QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Mar 6, 2008 -> 08:35 AM) What the hell's the point of that? You may as well just say "s***-talking" because that's obviously what he said. Actually though, I think crap-talking is funnier. I'm gonna start saying that hey, i'm happy they used "crap." they could have said, "[feces]-talking"
  5. QUOTE(haroldbainesknees @ Mar 5, 2008 -> 11:31 PM) We really can't be surprised by this. Nor does this particularly bother me. I am a fan of the Chicago White Sox, not the Charlotte Knights or Birmingham Barons. i know this won't be popular here, and it is a bit flawed, but it still made me LOL.
  6. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Mar 5, 2008 -> 09:58 PM) Ramirez with the 2-out RBI, sox lead 3-2. alexei is fast becoming one of my favorites.
  7. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Mar 5, 2008 -> 06:10 PM) I thought Booker for Ogunleye was pretty bold and creative i'd agree with that. however, i tend to think that was more the exception than the rule, although i'd love to be wrong.
  8. QUOTE(BigSqwert @ Mar 5, 2008 -> 06:05 PM) It's about transparency. She loaned her campaign $5M last month. Where did the $5M come from? Last I checked a US Senator isn't making millions. she has said she would come clean on this, no? as an unrelated aside, i saw bears coach lovie smith speak this morning here in columbus. lovie is a big barack fan, which i did not know.
  9. QUOTE(kyyle23 @ Mar 5, 2008 -> 05:01 PM) yestery B&B were talkign the possibility of getting Larry Fitzgerald from Arizona. Reason being, LFs contract is a huge burden on the Cardinals cap and is preventing them from making additional moves to make the team better. Im not saying this is a strong possibility, but it was a nice little daydream i'd love to see this and it would be exactly the type of thing the bear offense needs. however, this type of move would be bold and creative and i can't say i've ever thought of angelo as either bold or creative.
  10. so, has obama withdrawn from the campaign yet?
  11. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Mar 5, 2008 -> 04:05 AM) I wonder how much Booker has left. He's probably more of a move the chains guy at this stage of his career. The Bears still need a speedy, gamebreaking wideout, and no I don't think Hester can develop into that guy. sadly, i'm not sure that's going to happen. the wide receiver pool is thin at this point. d.j. hackett and bryant johnson are probably the best receivers, but neither fit the profile of a speedy gamebreaker. i do wonder if the bears try to take a flyer on brandon lloyd. he was horrible with washington but turner is obviously familiar with him from his time at illinois. either way, i don't see a significant upgrade available for the bears at receiver. really i don't see many upgrades available at any position in the free agent market at this point. i think the best we can hope is to catch lightning in a bottle with someone. given the bears' overall problems evaluating offensive personnel, i'm not overly optimistic that can happen.
  12. QUOTE(FlaSoxxJim @ Mar 4, 2008 -> 04:55 PM) Oh, hell yeah. That is just wrong.

    LOST!!!!

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 4, 2008 -> 07:31 PM) I re-watched the episode just to see if I recognized any of the new characters from anywhere else, but I did not. The episode was incredible. I am totally hooked waiting for what happens next. i'm just pissed we only get three (two?) more episodes then have to wait another month and a half.

    LOST!!!!

i just got to watch last week's episode last night. i found the auction that widmore's dad was at to be interesting, considering he was bidding on the manifest from the black rock, the boat on the island. the seller was also hanso, and in the past i had presumed widmore was associated with hanso/dharma in some way.
  15. QUOTE(rangercal @ Mar 4, 2008 -> 05:01 PM) Avg Ints Per year Brady 12.2 Manning 15.3 Favre 18 nice. some serious ownage going on here.
  16. QUOTE(Pants Rowland @ Mar 3, 2008 -> 08:59 PM) Yep. His line for the day ... IP H R ER BB SO HR ERA 1.0 0 4 4 9 0 0 23.14 At least he did not give up a hit. if kw trades crede for lowry i think we'll have confirmation that he truly hates ozzie. that would just be punishment.
  17. QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Mar 3, 2008 -> 03:02 AM) I didn't know we had any. Honestly, we've played about the same all season, and it caught up with us today. Maybe I'm expecting too much, but this team still hasn't really had a perfect game this season. Sampson said such a few weeks before his s*** hit the fan; this team really hasn't improved as the season has progressed, which is really unfortunate with the talent at hand. imo, indiana's recent performances are unrelated to the sampson stuff. i've watched a lot of iu basketball this year, and to me they've been pretty much the same team all year. to me, their only (borderline) quality road win is at siu, but outside of that they have not beat an even decent team on the road. it's vogue to relate it to the sampson stuff, but this has been a stagnant team most of the season. a favorable schedule has fostered a favorable record.
  18. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 11:56 PM) The age and contract makes me a little wary of making such a deal. I'd rather give Richar the shot to be honest. He could give you similar offensive production (although Ellis would be better defensively and probably just a little offensively, but that's debatable). Plus he's under our control for at least 5 seasons. agreed. cutting bait on richar at this point would be a silly overreaction.
  19. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Mar 2, 2008 -> 11:35 PM) Was there a link to BP? Is it up on their site? And for anyone curious about his contract situation, Ellis will be 31 years old in June, is due $5M in 2008 and will be eligible for free agency following this season. no gracias.
  20. QUOTE(kjshoe04 @ Feb 29, 2008 -> 09:10 AM) I can not wait for this either, I think you guys are gonna be in for all you can handle. I'm gonna be in champaign while watching this game, there might be some Illini fans around so I can show them what a meaningful game in Illinois looks like. nice. one good year and all the hubris comes out. love it. go salukis.
  21. QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Feb 27, 2008 -> 10:12 PM) i didn't realize that Sisco had football and baseball scholarship offers from the likes of Cal, Stanford and USC. Damn! looks like he made an error in judgment.
  22. QUOTE(NorthSideSox72 @ Feb 27, 2008 -> 08:51 PM) I've seen plenty of posters be equally (or more so) dismissive of those who feel that some factors in the game can never be captured in the numbers. i'd agree with this, but i think it more of an example of message-board culture than anything that is specific to soxtalk or baseball in general. it seems like you usually have defined factions emerge even within a singular fanbase. the point of contention varies and there can be and overriding argument and various little ones within. then you have the folks in the middle who maybe can see the validity in both sides but fail to get into the overriding argument. i've seen people belittled here for making a comparison that maybe isn't supported by numbers. i've also seen people belittled for overreliance on numbers. generally i think those people are the exception, not the rule, and are the same bitter sobs who can't go through a day without telling someone else they are wrong. what can you say, some people are just insufferable no matter what side they are on.
  23. i don't think it's the internet alone. i think the increased coverage in general probably takes some of the mystery and romance away from the game. you have news outlets entirely devoted to sports and they have to fill time, thus you really dig into the minutae of everything. on one hand, this is a good thing. if you are a baseball fan, you don't have to wait for such a narrow window of time to satisfy your interest. on the other, how much coverage is enough, and do we need steroid talk 24-7, 365?
